dshban's The New Pac-10 Dynasty ~ The Vault
WELCOME TO THE OC
dshban takes over another conference... oh boy ![]() By Max Laughton, Utopia Dynasty Correspondent Yes, dshban is taking over another conference, this time the Pac-10. Yes, this time he's actually going to be playing as one of the teams. And, yes, that's a reference to the show "The OC" in the title of this story. It's dynasty time for dshban, and presumably Utopia's all excited for this one. dshban's last dynasty, where he took over the ACC, was quite well received, becoming the single largest thread in Utopia Dynasty Forum history (as dshban likes to remind people). Thus, when dshban opened registrations for his new dynasty, he received nearly 30 entries. With only 18 spots open, it was tough to pick who would take the teams for the inaugural season of The New Pac-10. Allow me to let dshban take over at this point. "The first four guys were an easy decision," the coach of the soon-to-be-named Orange County team and also the Commissioner of the New Pac-10 said. "FieldingBLUE, JackRyanWMU, Estes and Thompson219. I don't want to play favourites, although I do. Fields is a dynasty legend, and Jack's right behind him. The both of them also did great work as coaches in the ACC. Same with Thompson - Tennessee Tech ended up being a great team, and it helps that he posts a lot. Estes is the same as Thompson, except Jack State sucked. " Yes, dshban made that face. The commissioner continued. "Then I looked through the rest of the applications, and a few things stood out to me. I knew I couldn't just have the same guys as the ACC dynasty, that would be unfair. I had to add WhoUTestin, because App State won a ACC title and all, plus he posts a lot. And being a mod certainly helps," dshban jokes. At least, I think he was joking. "So that's 5 old guys. I wasn't a coach in the ACC, so I'm new, technically. Then I add another 4 newbies, and it's 5-all! Makes perfect sense!" Yes, dshban. Whatever you say. Just take your pills and get some sleep. Obviously dshban couldn't just make 10 cupcake created teams and see who wins. So, he's going to try something that may or may not work, depending on how he implements it. There are 5 categories of teams in the New Pac-10 - strong running, strong passing, strong offense, strong defense, and balanced. 2 teams in each. The balanced teams are going to be reasonable, across the board. The strong offense teams will have a better offense than the balanced teams, but a worse defense (and vice-versa for the strong defense teams.) The strong running teams will have a very strong running game, but weak everything else (same with the strong passing teams). Hopefully, it'll work out. If not... well, let's just hope it works out, me thinks. Now, to the boring lists of coaches and teams

PRE-SEASON: Coach Decisions
Now that you've seen your rosters, it's time to make the teams more yours. I need four things from every coach, ASAP, via PM: 1. Redshirts, if any 2. One team request for your schedule 3. Coaching strategy, in this format: Playbook: ______ Offense Type: _______ Run/Pass: __% Run, __% Pass Cons/Agg: __% Cons, __% Agg Subs: __% Less, __% More Playbook: ______ Run/Pass: __% Run, __% Pass Cons/Agg: __% Cons, __% Agg Subs: __% Less, __% More 4. Recruiting targets. Here's how in-season recruiting will work: You give me 5 positions you wish to target. Be specific - I don't want OL, I want LT. I don't want DL, I want LE - for example. These players will be ranked, from #1 to #5. #1 will be your stud. He'll be a 5-star target, no matter what state he's from. #2 to #5 will be your other main targets. They'll all be 3-stars, preferably from a pipeline state. Make your decision wisely: it could decide whether your team's winning BCS Titles in years to come or scraping the bottom of the Pac-10 barrel for 2-win seasons. Once I get all of this, we can get this show on the road! |

PRE-SEASON: Pac-10 Preview
![]() 2007 Pac-10 season is one big mystery Melbourne, AUS. (AP) - Teams with stronger defenses than offenses are being ranked the opposite way. The Preseason 119 has the Pac-10 teams at the bottom, just in reverse alphabetical order. Team overall ratings make no sense. No-one has any idea what's going to happen in the first season of the New Pac-10. You might say it doesn't matter, but it sure as hell does. Eastern Kentucky started off the New ACC strong, with two conference titles, and finished it off the strongest, with a national title. Then again, Tennessee-Martin had 6 wins in their first season and pulled in some massive recruiting classes to leap to the top of the conference. So, at least some part of getting to the top of a brand new conference is luck. There's only one thing we know for sure; Orange County isn't contending for a title. dshban purposely made his team rated worse than everyone elses, meaning he can't just get a conference title straight away. Hopefully, there'll be some sort of struggle for him in getting to the top. That's the idea, at least. The rest is a mystery. If the Preseason 119 is anything to believe, Seattle's going to win the Pac-10, as they're ranked 110th. Then again, the teams are just in reverse alphabetical order there. Stupid EA. The All-Pac-10 selections gave a bit away. It hasn't been posted yet, but Seattle has 7 first teamers, Sacramento has 5, Portland has 3, while San Francisco, Las Vegas and Phoenix all have 2. It seems rather arbitrary though, as 59 OVR Salt Lake halfback Jesse Matthews was given the #1 spot on the 1st Team, above San Francisco's Eugene Bradford (80 OVR) and Seattle's Marvin Booker (also 80 OVR). And then San Francisco has a 2nd-team All-Pac-10 quarterback, despite being a running team. You know what, I'm not going to believe those choices very much. It all looks like it's going to be a very exciting season in the Pac-10. I look forward to it. Well, apart from all the losses for the OC. Damn it. Max Laughton is a Dynasty Correspondent for ncaaStrategies.com. (I apologise for all of the puns in advance.) Team Information: Las Vegas Lightning: The offense-minded team of the dynamic duo of Thompson and Sledge made the cover of ESPN: The Magazine's Pre-Season edition (picture not available), showing that ESPN loves the idea of Las Vegas having a good football team. Of course, that won't happen this season. (By the way, Thompson, purple's not your colour.) Redshirt senior Chris Henshaw leads the way at 70 OVR, and has 90 AWR... and not a lot else. He's a solid passer, especially for the Pac-10, but 72 THP and 70 THA are not the best ratings in the world. The sophomore Phillip Spicer is 68 OVR and should be good for the Lightning over the next 3 seasons he's there; he'll have to be, he's the best they've got (at least for now). An 80 OVR freshman fullback, two impact receivers and an 80 OVR tight end round out the skill positions. The defense hasn't got that much skill, as it's not their specialty, but there's a few bright spots. 65 OVR cornerback Mike Brown is good enough for most Pac-10 offenses, while the 2nd and 3rd cornerbacks, free safety and strong safety for the Lightning are all 56 OVR or above, meaning their defensive backs aren't that bad. Still, Las Vegas is gonna need to outgun some teams. Should be some fireworks in Sin City this season. Schedule:
Projections: A solid offensive line means everything in this conference. A coach with experience helps. dshban: 4th in Pac-10, middle-tier bowl EA: 10th in Pac-10 _________________________________________ Los Angeles Devils: It would be a horrible pun to say that the Devils are in hell, and they aren't really but I really should have thought about this sentence before starting it. Alright, let's try again. Los Angeles is in a bit of a pickle. They don't have a specialty. They're balanced, so they're solid all-around. But will their lack of specialty hurt them in this conference full of high-octane passing sides and knock-your-balls-off defensive units? The offense is quite solid, possibly a bit too good for a balanced team. 68 OVR senior quarterback John Green is steady with 88 AWR, and although he won't be going anywhere (52 SPD) his arm makes up for it (74 THP, 72 THA). Perry Sapp, the redshirt junior, is 65 OVR and stronger than most of the offensive linemen on his team. That'll come in handy, I'm sure. Two impact receivers for the Devils, with Cedric Johnson (70 OVR) and Zach Poole (62 OVR). Not that every other team doesn't have at least one of those. A nice tight end and a reasonable offensive line finish up the offense for Los Angeles. The defense isn't that bad, either. They're anchored by the fastest man in the Pac-10, Bryan Adams. The sophomore cornerback has 91 SPD, which is going to look like 101 SPD vs this crappy conference. (Well, it's true! Sorry if I insulted anyone.) 65 OVR Damon Long is a reasonable outside linebacker too, with 70 SPD. Overall, Los Angeles doesn't look that bad. The Devils might not be in hell for too long. Schedule:
Projections: Good enough offense to beat the bad defenses. Good enough defense to beat the bad offenses. Good enough to come third. dshban: 3rd in Pac-10, middle-tier bowl EA: 9th in Pac-10 _________________________________________ Orange County Crush: Ah, finally, I'm allowed to be mean to a team. The OC sucks. Not the show. I liked that. The team is the one that does the sucking, although Rachel Bilson... let's not go there. This is a PG dynasty. Orange County is a default cupcake created team, meaning that they suck, basically. They're user-controlled (as in I'll actually be playing with them), which I'm sure will help somewhat, but dshban's minimal stick skills aren't enough to make up for the fact that the roster is just horrible. If there was one word to describe the offense, I would use 'eugh'. It's just 'eugh', all-around. 52 OVR redshirt sophomore quarterback Jack Burnsides (eugh) is dead slow, doesn't know what he's doing, and can't throw to save his life. Well, he's not that bad at throwing. And he's 6'1. Which helps. The Nicks, Foster and Williams, are the backups there. Impact halfback Kelvin Summers has 72 SPD, and is a sophomore. Looks good so far! Oh, wait, he's 59 OVR. Oh, wait, he may as well be running behind some sticks. Blunt sticks. Eugh. But, hey, look, an impact receiver in Marcus Evans! With a whole... 72 SPD. And he's 59 OVR too. Eugh. Alright, enough of this crap. The defense isn't as crap, I suppose. Two of the three highest rated players on the team are at defensive tackle, with Wayne Hodge (65 OVR) and Wes Wilcox (62 OVR). Looks like we'll be having a pass rush from the defensive tackle position! (Pause for laughs.) Yeah, that wouldn't happen if they were 99 OVR. Linebackers - eugh. 'Nuff said. Jimmy Hendrix is playing cornerback. I don't know why. Oh, wait, I do - he's 65 OVR, has 76 SPD, and is an impact player. But, of course, he's a senior, so we'll lose him at the end of the year. Effing great. Two reasonable safeties round out the team. So, as you can see, Orange County sucks. Look for the Crush to get crushed this season. Schedule:
Projections: We suck. dshban: 10th in Pac-10 EA: 8th in Pac-10 _________________________________________ Phoenix Fire: The Fire are underrated. No, I don't mean they're not expected to do well and might (well, that's possible), but I mean I didn't really rate them high enough. Well, you can look at it that way. Or, you can see the glass as half-full, and see a young team with some potential to be good in the next two years. They've got two experienced coaches at the helm, (and not just in fake football), and surely a team in Arizona in the Pac-10 won't disappoint! 72, 72, 72, 72. Thus reads the skill positions' overall ratings of the Phoenix offense. Junior quarterback Dustin Noel - 72 OVR, with 68 SPD. (His backup has 78 SPD - no lack of wheels from the Fire QB position.) Impact sophomore halfback Josh Battle - 72 OVR, with 80 SPD. Not half bad. Impact junior wide receiver Ryan Williamson - 72 OVR, with 80 SPD. Again, not half bad. Redshirt junior tight end, Robert Davis - 72 OVR, with 70 SPD and he can block, too. And then a 78 OVR fullback. Not that bad. Not that bad at all. But you wanna talk about bad? Let me show you the Phoenix defense. 65 and 62 OVR defensive tackles, which would be a bright spot on Orange County (and is), is crap here. Which I think would compliment the Phoenix defense, so I take it back. I just want to insult my team some more. In fact... wait a second... Phoenix's defense is almost exactly the same as Orange County's! Great work, dshban, way to change the ratings! Idiot. Anywho, apart from all that Jazz (wait, this isn't Salt Lake, who are in Utah, where the Jazz play. I don't know what the Jazz plays, but good luck to them. Score those points!), Phoenix looks... about average for this conference. Are they playing with fire, or can I think of a different pun? Schedule:
Projections: Can they set the world alight? No. Can they do better than my guess? Probably. We'll see. dshban: 9th in Pac-10 EA: 7th in Pac-10 _________________________________________ Portland Sharks: If you go to Portland's roster, and look at "ALL", things look great for the Sharks. It reads: 80 OVR, 80 OVR, 80 OVR, 76 OVR, 68 OVR, 65 OVR. But then it drops a tad. The 50's. The 40's. What I'm trying to say here is that Portland is very top heavy. They're the opposite of, say, Los Angeles, where everyone's alright. With Portland, you're either really good, or really bad. Can this unbalanced nature vault the Sharks to the top of this new Pac-10, or will it come back to bite them? 80 OVR. 68 SPD. 90 AWR. 78 THP. 76 THA. On paper, Lance Gaddis looks great. But he's a Texas Tech quarterback, basically. He's got no help from his running game - the starter, Quentin McAfee, is 59 OVR. His blockers are poor, at best, although they're alright for Pac-10 standards, I suppose. Targets? That he's OK with - two impact receivers in Darren McGee (80 OVR) and Charlie Brown (good grief, 76 OVR). They've both got wheels, too - 82 and 86 SPD, respectively. And then Nicholas Flamel, the It's another story of good offense, bad defense. The defense is anything but top heavy - every starter is in the 50's in overall rating, with the exception of 3. Impact cornerback Sean Thomas is one, at 65 OVR - but he's nothing special in a league full of impact CBs. The other two are defensive ends, but they're at the other end (48 and 44 OVR, respectively). Kicker James McCarthy is 65 OVR. That's irrelevant. Portland should be alright, I reckon. They're a bit of a mixed bag - they could use their high-octane passing game to vault to the top straight away, or the lack of blocking might hinder their charge and send them to the deep depths of the Pac-10. Is there blood in the water? (I'm sorry, I can't help myself. The puns are so easy - I feel like I'm working for E!SPN!) Schedule:
Projections: If football was poker, Portland would be going all-in. What's gonna happen? Depends how they play their cards. dshban: 5th in Pac-10, lower-tier bowl EA: 6th in Pac-10 _________________________________________ Sacramento Golden Bears: Sacramento is kind of like their brethren in strong passing, Portland. They've got a great passing game, obviously. But their defense is only just alright. The Golden Bears are hoping to set the Pac-10 alight with the deep ball, but will they be mauled before they can catch that golden fish known as the BCS bid? (What the hell does that even mean?) Redshirt sophomore and 80 OVR? Patrick Williams has a reason to be 1st team All-Pac-10. If I had to put money on it, I'd say he's gonna be the first New Pac-10 player to make it to Madden - but we're living in the now, and he's got a heck of an arm. The best in the conference, most likely, with 87 THP and 86 THA. He's got two solid wide-outs to throw to, too, in Kelvin Davis and Mark Cantrell (both impact players, 80 and 74 OVR respectively). His running game won't be of much help, as Dom McGuinness is only 65 OVR, but a 78 OVR tight end will help. Another team, another crap defense. 65 and 62 OVR defensive tackles? Been there, done that. 65 OVR impact cornerback? Yawn. Seen it. Reasonable safeties? Again. Woo. Sacramento, you're boring me. I'm wrapping up, I'm tired. The Golden Bears could do alright this season. But are they good enough? Insert pun here. Schedule:
Projections: Redshirt sophomore Patrick Williams has a strong arm, but it's not strong enough to carry the whole team. dshban: 7th in Pac-10 EA: 5th in Pac-10 _________________________________________ Salt Lake Blackbirds: Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! A GOOD DEFENSE! Salt Lake comes as a breath of fresh air to me, as I'm just sick of writing about crappy defenses. Instead, I get to write about an inadequate offense! Yay, me! If it's coaching you're worried about, Blackbird wise... you're an idiot. Jake Blues, brother of Eastern Kentucky's Elwood, has the pedigree to make it possibly two Blues Brothers in the Utopia Dynasty HOF. But can his team get him there, or will the wings fall off this bird? Salt Lake has as good of a defense as Orange County does. Really, that's 'nuff said. 52 OVR quarterback Henry Nicholson is slow, and can throw OK, but not that great. And then there's two Fosters behind him. And not the beer. Australians don't actually drink Fosters, BTW. 1st All-Pac-10 halfback Jesse Matthews is probably there just because of the workload he's gonna get, not his ability. He's 59 OVR, and a sophomore, but the Blues Brothers like to run the ball so he should be alright when facing Pac-10 competition, at least. 59 OVR impact receiver? OK, that's enough of that. The offensive line needs some help - a lot of help. A good defense! Finally! It made me very happy to see those higher numbers on defenders. 68 OVR defensive end? Yay! 78 OVR defensive tackle? Woo hoo! 78 OVR impact cornerback? Yee-haw! Salt Lake's gonna rely on their defense to keep them in games, definitely. If this was real-life, I'd even say that they're gonna score more on defense than on offense. But that's really quite ridiculous, so that won't happen. Anywho, overall. Salt Lake is good. To a point. Their solid defense is only going to carry them so far. You can't just hope your defense keeps stopping the other team's offense until you can just kick it in from a yard away or something. The offense is going to need to step up, or someone's gonna swoop and take Salt Lake's possible spot at the top. Schedule:
Projections: Coaching? Got it. Defense? Got it. Offense? Not so much. And that's quite important. dshban: 6th in Pac-10 EA: 4th in Pac-10 _________________________________________ San Diego Knights: You might be saying to yourself right now, "but dshban, San Diego has a good defense and a bad offense too, but you're picking them to come first! What the hell is wrong with you?" More than likely, you're not saying that, but work with me here. San Diego's defense is just as good as Salt Lake's. But the offense is ever so slightly better. And I think that might push the Knights over the top and to the top of the Kingdom known as the Pac-10. We saw the offense of 72's in Phoenix. Now, meet the offense of 59's in San Diego! Redshirt senior quarterback Derek Southall is 59 OVR. Junior halfback Obadiah Howell is 59 OVR. Impact receiver C.J. Cavka, a sophomore, is 59 OVR (although the #1 WR on the team, Joel Motte, is 62 OVR. It works better if we ignore him.) And, maybe that's about it. But it worked in my head. Still, it's better than Salt Lake's offense, and that's why I didn't pick the Blackbirds at the top. The Knights' offense might just be good enough. Maybe the Salt Lake defense is just mildly better than San Diego's. Still, a 78 OVR right outside linebacker in Brian Marcus and an impact 78 OVR sophomore cornerback aren't people you argue with on that point. Solid players everywhere else, too, make the Knights my team to beat this year. Sure, I might not have much to go on. But I know this - they've got the coach in X.Q. Jackson. They've got the defense. And - in my opinion - San Diego's got a good enough offense to win the Pac-10 and go BCS bowling. Of course, they could end up coming last and making me look like an idiot, you never know. Schedule:
Projections: Coaching? Got it. Defense? Got it. Offense? Good enough. Sorry to keep comparing them to Salt Lake... but it's close. Knights are better than Mormons, me thinks. dshban: 1st in Pac-10, BCS Bowl EA: 3rd in Pac-10 _________________________________________ San Francisco Generals: San Francisco is an interesting case. Their specialty is running the ball. Everyone in the backfield of the Generals offense has 72 SPD or above. So they're fast, compared to most Pac-10 defenses at least. But will they capitalise on this? Better yet, will their offensive line make the holes needed for them to capitalise on this? Can the Generals fight their way to the top, or will they be stuck fighting a war they know they can't win? 2nd team All-Pac-10? I don't neccessarily agree with it, but it's what Travis Schmidt's got. He's also got 74 SPD, which I'm more a fan of. His arm is below average, even for this conference - 65 THP, 62 THA - but it won't matter so much if defenses can't catch him. And you don't need a strong arm to hand it off to an 80 OVR running back. Impact halfback Eugene Bradford, a sophomore who is 1st team All-Pac-10, and fullback Aaron Jones, a true freshman who is 2nd team All-Pac-10, make up two 80 OVR backs for the Generals. They're both strong, and fast, and I think they just might have to carry the team. Joe King is an impact receiver on a team that loves to run the ball. Nice work there, buddy boy. The offensive line is alright. The defense is nothing special. Then again, it's not that bad, because everyone with the exception of two has a bad defense. So those bad offenses might not matter so much. Anyways. 65 OVR sophomore cornerback (ANOTHER ONE?!?) Jay Pearson leads the defensive unit. There's a guy called Jay on Pirate Master. That show sucks. Thank heavens it got canned. Well, it's only online now. Which is funny. Ha ha, Mark Burnett, no more money for you from Survivor with Pirates! Back to football now. San Francisco, as I said, is interesting. If they can get their running game to work, they could be BCS bowling. If there's no holes, their offense - and team - won't go anywhere. I'm guessing they'll be somewhere in the middle. Well, maybe 2nd. Schedule:
Projections: The running game is good enough to get them bowling, but the defense isn't good enough to get them BCS bowling. dshban: 2nd in Pac-10, middle-tier bowl EA: 2nd in Pac-10 _________________________________________ Seattle Bulldogs: You wanna talk about Playoffs? No? Well, how about top heavyness? There we go. Seattle's "ALL" list is extremely top heavy. 82 OVR, 80 OVR... 12 point drop. Then another 3. Those two great players? Running backs, of course. Seattle, it figures, is a running team. No Shaun Alexander, but still a strong guy. It's just the rest of the team that's worrying. There'll be no shortage of attempts, we know that - but another pourous defense could be costly. Another speedy backfield, this time with every player above 74 SPD. Quarterback Jeremiah Hall has 78 SPD - the second fastest player on the team! If I'd have gone by my logic of fastest players return kicks, he's be back there for kickoffs! But I'm not that stupid. Hall can't pass that well - 70 THP, 68 THA - but again, who needs to throw when they can't catch you? Marvin Booker is the fastest player on the team without being a speed back. The sophomore impact halfback is 80 OVR, with 80 SPD and 80 STR. Nice. Sophomore fullback Josh King is 82 OVR? Nice. Running behind the strongest player in the Pac-10, right tackle Drew Carpenter? Niiice. The defense is, again, average. It's the same old story - 65 and 62 OVR defensive tackles, 65 OVR impact cornerback, reasonably alright safeties, yadda yadda. No-one cares about that. On to the final part. It's tricky to predict how the Bulldogs are gonna do. One part of me wants to put them up with San Francisco. Another part wants them down the bottom, because the Navy offense isn't going to work. They slot in nicely at 8th, but don't be surprised if they do better... or worse. Schedule:
Projections: They could be much better than this... although I think EA's prediction of 1st may be a bit much. dshban: 8th in Pac-10 EA: 1st in Pac-10 _________________________________________ Pac-10 Projections: EA: 1. Seattle 2. San Francisco 3. San Diego 4. Salt Lake 5. Sacramento 6. Portland 7. Phoenix 8. Orange County 9. Los Angeles 10. Las Vegas dshban: 1. San Diego 2. Las Vegas 3. Los Angeles 4. San Francisco 5. Portland 6. Salt Lake 7. Sacramento 8. Seattle 9. Phoenix 10. Orange County |

AROUND THE PAC-10
Sacramento wins Pac-10 opener; Knights shut out in Arkansas The first ever game in New Pac-10 history was a 21-9 decision to Sacramento, giving the Golden Bears the first ever win for the New Pac-10 in their home stadium named, "The Forest." An 86 yard interception return by middle linebacker Charlie Kellner and two touchdowns passing were the scores for Sacramento, while the Devils had a field goal in the second quarter and a touchdown run in the fourth, with a failed 2 point conversion. Part of LA's problem may have been their passing; quarterback John Green threw 57 times for 284 yards, but had 4 interceptions. Patrick Williams of the Golden Bears performed better, throwing 44 times for 319 yards, with 2 TDs and 2 INTs. Perry Sapp, halfback of the Devils, gained 85 yards and a TD on 14 carries, while the Golden Bears lost 5 yards total rushing (starting HB: 3 yards on 3 carries, QB: 6 for -8). Wide receiver Cedric Johnson of Los Angeles had sore hands after the game, and rightly so; he had 16 receptions for 120 yards. On the other side, second WR Mark Centrell had 11 grabs for 101 yards, while starter Kelvin Davis had 3 catches for 139 yards and a touchdown. 6 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss and 2 sacks was the stat-line for left outside linebacker Damon Long of the Devils, while Golden Bears middle linebacker Charlie Kellner had the aforementioned INT returned for a TD, along with 6 tackles, a TFL and a forced fumble. Kellner was later announced NCAA and Pac-10 defensive player of the week for his efforts. A 23 yard pass from Henry Nicholson to Eric Jacques gave Salt Lake their only score of the game in a 38-7 drubbing at real team rivals Utah. The Utes had 370 yards passing in the win, while the Blackbirds could only manage 66 yards passing in response. Nicholson passed for a touchdown and 2 interceptions for Salt Lake, while halfback Jesse Matthews ran for 38 yards on 14 attempts. It was his backup, Lamont Coley, who outperformed him though as he gained 40 yards on just 8 rushes, for a 5.0 ypc. WR Jacques had 5 receptions for 33 yards and a touchdown, while free safety Bandof Brothers and cornerback Sean Rust both had interceptions. Portland kept it close but could only make it 38-21 at the buzzer, losing to Idaho at the Kibbie Dome. The Vandals scored 35 unanswered points in the first half, and while Portland came back with 3 touchdown passes in the second half, it wasn't enough for the Sharks to pull out the victory. Quarterback Lance Gaddis had a terrific game, slicing up the Idaho defense for 416 yards and 3 touchdowns, with only one pick. He threw 48 times, and was named Pac-10 offensive player of the week. Rushing wise, Portland gained 12 yards, including 7 from their starter, while three Sharks had 6 receptions or more - starting wide out Darren McGee had 6 receptions for 166 yards and 2 touchdowns, tight end Nicholas Flamel had 8 grabs for 125 yards, while (good grief) Charlie Brown had 10 catches for 51 yards. Left outside linebacker Justin Gray had 9 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss, a sack and a forced fumble. The close scoreline came at a cost though; the Sharks lost third wide receiver Tyler Parrish for 3 weeks due to a sprained elbow, with 52 OVR true frosh Jovon Murphy to replace him, while 65 OVR starting left tackle Gabe Williams had a high ankle sprain and will be out for 4 weeks. Williams will be replaced by 52 OVR Mike Andrews. In Athens, it was a 14-35 loss for Seattle. The Bulldogs led 7-0 midway through the first, but allowed 35 unanswered points from that point onwards as Ohio was victorious. (They obviously weren't in Athens, Greece.) Starting quarterback Jeremiah Hall went 6 of 12 for 14 yards and an interception, and was pulled for backup Clay Austin who went 3 of 8 for 49 yards. Super sophomore halfback Marvin Booker gained 141 yards and 2 touchdowns on 25 carries in a superb effort, while QB Hall had 37 yards rushing. Defensive tackle Julian James was the leader on defense with 8 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss and a sack for Seattle but the Bulldogs could not win in Ohio. My prediction of San Diego coming first in the Pac-10 looked a bit stupid when they lost 31-0 to Arkansas State at "The Round Table" in San Diego, CA. (Like the name?) The Indians had 219 yards and 2 touchdowns passing from their starting quarterback, along with 96 yards and a TD from their backup. In reply, Derek Southall of the Knights went 17 of 31 for 96 yards. (But no picks!) Arky State's halfback ran for 168 yards and a TD - in comparison, halfback Obadiah Howell had 32 yards on 9 attempts for San Diego. Starting wide receiver Joel Motte had 9 receptions for 58 yards, while the supposedly strong defense didn't do so well on the scoreboard but did alright stat wise - right outside linebacker Brian Marcus had 14 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss and a sack, while LOLB John Morris and right defensive end Joe Washington both had 8 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss and a sack, respectively. Cornerback Seth Stephens had a pick for the Knights. San Francisco kept it close at San Fran Base but couldn't get enough lotion (or something) as they lost to Houston, 21-16. Three field goals by the Generals gave them a 9-7 lead at the main break, but two touchdown passes by the Cougars in the third gave them the win. 3 touchdowns and 222 yards passing for the Houston QB, while Travis Schmidt of San Francisco went 10 of 22 for 90 yards and 2 picks. Halfback Eugene Bradford gained 101 yards and a TD on 26 carries, while the defensive standout was Generals cornerback Jay Pearson, who had 5 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss and a sack in the Houston victory, meaning the New Pac-10 went 1-5 in their first week ever playing football (although, taking out games where they played each other, they went 0-4). WEEK 1 RESULTS Sacramento 21, Los Angeles 9 Utah 38, Salt Lake 7 Idaho 38, Portland 21 Ohio 35, Seattle 14 Arkansas State 31, San Diego 0 Houston 21, San Francisco 16 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Offense — Lance Gaddis, QB, Portland (32-48, 416 yards, 3 TD, Int) Defense — Charlie Kellner, MLB, Sacramento (6 Tkls, TFL, Int, FF, TD) PAC-10 STANDINGS
IN-SEASON RECRUITING Everyone's doing OK Melbourne, AUS. (AP) — There's not a lot to comment on in Week 2 of recruiting on current-gen. No-one's lost anyone. No-one went down on any lists, and everyone at least had two guys that moved them up their lists. Each team has five targets, and each target has 20 points on them. This'll be more updated when something actually happens, me thinks.

ORANGE COUNTY SIM RECAP
The OC's only score... a safety?!? In 55-2 loss to Fresno Orange County, CA. -- Two freezes was enough for dshban. The first time dshban tried to play Fresno State at Orange County, the game froze in the second quarter. The second time, he made it to mid-way through the fourth before the freeze. Third time a charm? We'll never know, as dshban couldn't be bothered to play the game again and instead simmed the game. Fresno State was victorious, of course, 55-2. Yes, 2. The OC only scored 2 points in the game, a safety by defensive tackle Wayne Hodge in the first quarter. Apart from that, it was all Fresno, with their quarterback passing for 231 yards and 3 touchdowns, while running for one more. Orange County's Jack Burnsides went 9 of 24 for 53 yards and 4 interceptions - a lot better than when dshban was playing, as then Burnsides threw 8 picks. (dshban sucks at NCAA.) Halfback Kelvin Summers gained 33 yards on 17 attempts, which actually isn't that bad, considering how badly Summers was running in the 2nd game (13 rushes for 4 yards, I believe). Impact wide receiver Marcus Evans had 6 receptions for 42 yards in the sim game. Two defenders stood out for the OC - right outside linebacker Omar Anderson, who had 7 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss and a sack, while Wayne Hodge had 7 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks and the aforementioned safety. Hodge did all this despite injuring himself in the fourth quarter (I presume) with a torn hamstring - he'll be out for 7 weeks. Damn it. There goes our tied-for-best player on the team. AROUND THE PAC-10 Salt Lake wins with backup QB; Lightning strikes UNLV in cross-town rivalry On Thursday night, Salt Lake took on Florida International at the Blackbird's Nest, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Blackbirds took a hit before the game even started, with starting quarterback Henry Nicholson being suspended for 3 games due to an altercation at his apartment in which the police were called over the weekend (which weekend?), while backup defensive tackle Tyler Preston was suspended for one week after being late for team practice. Despite this, Salt Lake was victorious! Free safety Bandof Brothers had an interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter, sparking a 30-0 first half for the Blackbirds as they went on to win, 30-21. Backup quarterback Drew Foster performed admirably, passing for 52 yards and 2 touchdowns, with one interception. Well, the important thing is he won the game for Salt Lake. FIU's halfback rushed for 180 yards and a touchdown, and while Salt Lake halfback Lamont Coley rushed for 34 yards and had a touchdown receiving (by the way, he's the backup... what the hell?), which wasn't a lot, it helped. Obviously. Duh. The main reason the Blackbirds won, though, probably, was the 6 interceptions thrown by the FIU quarterback. Three of thise picks were by the aforementioned FS Bandof Brothers, who returned one for a touchdown - Brothers was the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week. Right defensive end Kareem Ruud had 9 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, a sack and a forced fumble in the Salt Lake triumph. Defensive captain Devin Swaggert was suspended by San Francisco before their game against Army. Swaggert will miss 2 games. The Generals could quite possibly miss him, too, as they lost 35-25 to the Black Knights. Travis Schmidt, quarterback of San Francisco, passed for 187 yards and ran for 49 yards, along with 2 touchdowns. Eugene Bradford gained 118 yards and a touchdown for the Generals, while they allowed 145 yards rushing and a TD by the Army halfback. John Brooks, the middle linebacker replacing the suspended Devin Swaggert, led San Francisco with 7 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, a sack and a forced fumble, but couldn't lead the Generals to the win. In Seattle, Washington, at "The Kennel", the Bulldogs of Seattle lost to the UL Monroe Warhawks, 42-31. Seattle led early, with a touchdown pass by quarterback Jeremiah Hall, followed by a 67 yard TD run by Hall, but the Warhawks scored 28 points in the second half to get the win. Hall passed for 61 yards, one TD and one INT, while rushing for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 12 attempts. Starting halfback Marvin Booker gained 154 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries - in comparison, UL Monroe's halfback ran for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns on 15 rushes. Willie Weiss, left defensive end of the Bulldogs, had 5 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks and a forced fumble in the Seattle loss. A cross-town battle ended in an upset as Las Vegas defeated UNLV at the MGM Bowl in Las Vegas, Nevada, 24-17 in overtime. UNLV scored 17 points in the first three quarters, and looked like running away with it. But two touchdown passes from quarterback Chris Henshaw to wide receiver Jerry Garrett and a field goal tied it up at 17-17 with 2:10 to go in the ball game, and we were headed to overtime. Henshaw connected with Garrett for a third time in the first possession of OT, for Las Vegas, and then the Lightning stopped UNLV on fourth down to get their first win of the season (and indeed, ever). Chris Henshaw passed for 196 yards and 3 touchdowns, all three of which went to Jerry Garrett - who had 9 receptions for 148 yards, and ended up as the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week. Lightning free safety Justin Heard had 10 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss and 2 sacks in the win. Phoenix didn't fare as well as Las Vegas did, losing 24-14 to rivals New Mexico State at the Flaming Shoe in Phoenix, Arizona (the stadium is horseshoe shaped. Thus, the name). Strong safety Elton Harris was suspended for 2 games before the game, for academic reasons. He may have helped as the Aggies threw two touchdown passes in the victory - their quarterback passed for 372 yards, but also threw 2 picks. Phoenix quarterback Dustin Noel had 145 yards and a touchdown passing, while halfback Josh Battle gained 51 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Wide receiver Ryan Williamson had 71 yards and a TD receiving, while left defensive end Aaron McCargo was the best on the defensive side of the ball for the Fire with 6 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss and 2 sacks. The loss came at a bigger cost, too, with free safety Jamaal Minor suffering a torn groin (out for 10 weeks) and fullbacl Darryl Stokes having a high ankle sprain (5 weeks). Remember, coaches, you can apply for medical redshirts by PMing me. Backup halfback Kevin Wheatley was suspended for 3 games before Portland hosted rival Wyoming, for getting into a fight at practice. Does a backup halfback really matter for a passing team? Obviously not, as Portland defeated Wyoming, 42-35, at the Aquarium in Portland, Oregon. Lance Gaddis threw for 261 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception, while backup Josh Martinez came in in the second half and threw for 242 yards and 3 touchdowns. Not bad. Sadly, Martinez came in because Gaddis was injured for a week with a hip pointer. While the Sharks defense allowed 331 yards passing and 125 yards rushing, with a grand total of 5 touchdowns combined, Darren McGee, Portland's wide receiver, made up the deficit with 180 yards receiving on 18 catches, with 1 touchdown. Charlie Brown had 157 yards and 2 touchdowns receiving on 9 receptions, while Nicholas Flamel had 117 yards and a TD - a very nice day out for the tight end. Halfback Quentin McAfee also had 33 yards receiving and a touchdown, to go along with his massive 15 yards on the ground. Middle linebacker Stephen Lane had 9 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, a sack and an interception for the Sharks. Helped by the suspension of starting wide receiver and kick returner Zach Poole for the first half, the Los Angeles Devils were thrashed by the San Jose Spartans, 34-0, at Infernus Arena in LA. 27 points in the first half gave the Spartans the upper hand early, and they never relinquished, throwing 2 touchdown passes and running for 2 more. Los Angeles quarterback John Green threw 4 interceptions in the loss, while halfback Perry Sapp gained 35 yards on 10 carries. He needed the ball more, me thinks. The suspended Zach Poole still managed to have 4 receptions for 12 yards in his only half of play, while two defenders stood out for the Devils - left outside linebacker Damon Long (10 tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, sack) and middle linebacker Terrence Bowers (10 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, sack). True freshman defensive tackle Austin Baker broke his tibia in the game, and will be out for 8 weeks. San Diego's defense was miserable against San Diego State as the Aztecs defeated their rivals, the Knights, at QUALCOMM Stadium (trademark), 59-7. The Knights' only score was on a 6 yard touchdown run in the third quarter, but apart from that it was all Aztecs as San Diego State passed for 313 yards and 5 touchdowns along with rushing for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns (both starters). San Diego wasn't that bad on offense, passing for 169 yards and an INT, while rushing for 69 yards and a TD (both starters that is). OK, maybe it wasn't that great. I'm just used to the OC's horrible stats. Knights receiver C.J. Cavka had 7 receptions for 109 yards in a great effort, and right outside linebacker Brian Marcus had 8 tackles, but it wasn't enough as the Aztecs took the W. WEEK 2 RESULTS Salt Lake 30, FIU 21 Army 35, San Francisco 25 UL Monroe 42, Seattle 31 Las Vegas 24, UNLV 17 New Mexico State 24, Phoenix 14 Portland 42, Wyoming 35 Fresno State 55, Orange County 2 San Jose State 34, Los Angeles 0 San Diego State 59, San Diego 7 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Offense — Jerry Garrett, WR, Las Vegas (9 Rec, 148 Yds., 3 TD) Defense — Bandof Brothers, FS, Salt Lake (3 Tkls, 3 Int, TD) PAC-10 STANDINGS
IN-SEASON RECRUITING Still no losses, but some teams doing better than others Melbourne, AUS. (AP) — There's still not a lot to comment on, but if anyone can find something out of nothing... it's probably not me, but I'll do so anyways. Tell you what, I'll go team-by-team to show how they're doing. Las Vegas: Targets: 4-star RE, 3-star MLB, CB, LOLB, WR What's Goin' On: The most interested player, interestingly, is the right end Larry Ralph from Bakersfield, CA. Ralph has Las Vegas #1 over Wisconsin, South Carolina, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech, and didn't enjoy his visit to Wisky. I hear it's cold there. MLB Seth Williams out of Lovelock, NV. has the Lightning tied for #1 with Colorado, and on the up, while CB Jonathan Rouse from Rohnert Park, CA. has Las Vegas second and moving up behind... San Diego?!? Interesting. OLB Chris Tautofi from College Station, TX. has Las Vegas tied for first with Texas, while WR Danny Bodiford from Carmichael, CA. has the Lightning second, just behind Virginia Tech. Los Angeles: Targets: 4-star QB, 3-star HB, MLB, RE, LT What's Goin' On: Despite being at the bottom of the Pac-10, Los Angeles has three recruits naming them as outright favourites. QB Terrence Glover, he of the 4.49 forty, has the Devils first ahead of Florida, Miami and Florida State (Glover's from Gainesville, Florida). Halfback Stephen Lucas from Glendora, CA. has LA ahead of basically the whole WAC. MLB Lonnie Bray out of Anaheim, CA. has the Devils above San Francisco and three teams from the WAC. Jared Bass, the RE from North Logan, Utah, has Los Angeles behind Texas but ahead of some other Big 12 powerhouses, including Oklahoma, while LT Matt King from Citrus Heights, CA. has San Diego State at the top of his list followed by San Diego, Los Angeles, Fresno State and San Jose State. Orange County: Targets: 4-star FS, 3-star HB, QB, RT, MLB What's Goin' On: Free safety Brad McDuffie of Castro Valley, CA. is the best player the OC is targeting and thus is the least interested (makes sense in my head), with Boise State first ahead of Orange County, BYU, UNLV and aTm. Zach Hill, the halfback from Arcadia, CA. has the OC outright first ahead of Penn State, Duke and the entire WAC, while QB Joey Huff has the Crush first ahead of the whole WAC and Middle Tennessee State. Huff's from Rancho Cordova, CA. Right tackle Trey Washington, from Bakersfield, CA., has the OC tied for first with New Mexico State, while MLB J.B. Carlton from San Mateo, CA., has the OC outright second ahead of Georgia but behind BYU. Phoenix: Targets: 4-star LG, QB, 3-star MLB, LT, WR What's Goin' On: For some reason, Phoenix is targeting two four-stars, although it's probably bad for them as they're not as interested. Guard Mike Lewis out of West Helena, AR., has Phoenix second behind Louisville, while Johnny Jones, a quarterback from Ross Township, PA., has Phoenix third, behind Penn State and West Virginia. MLB Ryan Slater has the Fire second behind Texas (Slater's from Gainesville, TX.), while Greg Lilly, a left tackle from West Memphis, AR., has Phoenix third behind Texas and LSU. WR Dylan Smith, from West Hollywood, CA., has Phoenix tied for first with San Francisco. Portland: Targets: 4-star QB, 3-star MLB, LOLB, WR, ROLB What's Goin' On: Portland is doing very well in recruiting, being (technically) first with every recruit they're targeting. The #1 QB out of high school this year is apparently Blake Johnson, out of Athens, GA., and he has Portland tied for 1st with Tennessee. MLB Chad Davis, from Salmon Creek, WA., has Portland outright first above Michigan, while OLB Matt Dennis from Kailua, HI., has the Sharks tied for first with BYU. WR Nick Johnson has Portland tied for first with New Mexico State (Johnson's from Salinas, CA.), while Tariq Casey from Kaneohe Station, HI., has Portland outright first above Miami. Sacramento: Targets: 5-star SS, 3-star HB, LE, ROLB, RG What's Goin' On: One of only two five-star targets by the Pac-10 this in-season recruiting... season... is strong safety Jermaine Clay, from Lancaster, CA. It's not going too well. Clay has Sacramento tied for 3rd, technically, but they're realistically tied for last with Tennessee (both teams went down this week). Halfback Greg Reid from Casa de Oro, CA., has Sacramento tied for first but actually fourth, going by the list, while left defensive end Jordan Pittman from Cathedral City, CA. has the Golden Bears fourth as well (San Francisco is first). Luke Willis, the outside linebacker from Centerville, Utah, has Sacramento second behind Nebraska, while Xavier Motley, the right guard from Tustin, CA., also has the Golden Bears second, behind San Jose State. Salt Lake: Targets: 4-star HB, 3-star LT, LE, RT, SS What's Goin' On: Salt Lake is doing pretty well in recruiting after this week's win, with the most interested recruit in the Pac-10 looking at them and being in the top 2 of every recruit. Four-star halfback Eddie Bishop from Lake Jackson, TX., has Salt Lake tied for first with LSU, while left tackle Geoff Allen from Tulsa, OK., has Salt Lake second behind Oklahoma. Richard Finnerty, the left defensive end out of Raleigh Hills, OR., has Salt Lake way out in front for his services - he's the most interested recruit I saw on all the Pac-10 team lists. Rialto, CA.'s Tony Stewart, a right tackle, has Salt Lake tied for first with San Diego State, while strong safety Chaz Hayes (from Brownwood, TX.) has Salt Lake tied for first with Texas A&M. San Diego: Targets: 4-star HB, 3-star LOLB, CB, RT, LT What's Goin' On: The worst San Diego is doing with a recruit is fourth, being in that spot with #2 halfback in the country Jasper Massey, out of Killeen, TX. You could also say, though, that the Knights are tied for second with him. Ayo Bell, the left outside linebacker from Grandville, MI., has San Diego third behind Louisville and Michigan, while cornerback Jonathan Rouse from Rohnert Park, CA., has San Diego first ahead of Las Vegas. Right tackle Austin Hopkins (from Santa Clara, CA.) has San Diego tied for first with Navy, while left tackle Matt King out of Citrus Heights, CA., has the Knights second behind San Diego State but ahead of Los Angeles. San Francisco: Targets: 4-star QB, 3-star MLB, LE, CB, WR What's Goin' On: South Whittier, CA.'s Marcus Johnson is a quarterback who has San Francisco third behind New Mexico and Air Force, while middle linebakcer Lonnie Bray has the Generals second behind Los Angeles. Bray is from Anaheim, CA. Jordan Pittman (left end) of Cathedral City, CA. has San Fran first, with Sacramento in fourth, while cornerback Thomas Adams of Lynwood, CA. has San Fran second behind Hawaii. Wide receiver Dylan Smith, from West Hollywood, CA., has San Fran tied for first with Phoenix. Seattle: Targets: 5-star MLB, 3-star HB, RE, QB, SS What's Goin' On: The second of two five-stars targeted by the Pac-10, middle linebacker Mark Lewis from Ponca City, OK. has Seattle second, just behind Texas. In fact, every recruit targeted by Seattle has the Bulldogs second - halfback Josh Lewis from Twinsburg, OH., right defensive end Kenan Oliver from Oxford, OH., quarterback Zac Anderson from Jackson, MS., and strong safety Adam Dukes from Ironton, OH. |

![]() Left: (#78) Shawn Rogers is helpless as two Chippewas crush (#5) Jimmy Hendrix. Right: (#23) Thomas Robertson spins out of the way of a defender on his way to a - holy crap - positive gain. LEARNING A LESSON dshban's first game on NCAA '08 ends in 77-3 destruction Mount Pleasant, Mich. (AP) — Central Michigan, of all teams, taught dshban about the difficulties of playing in the Bowl Subdivision. The Chippewas scored 74 unanswered points in a massive 77-3 drubbing of Orange County, although it was looking quite close at one point. At the beginning of the second quarter, the score was only 7-0 in favour of Central Michigan. The Crush defense had forced a punt. Then came an amazing sight. The OC's first ever points scored came on a spectacular (for a team this crappy) 2:55, 16 play, 77 yard drive which was helped out by two roughing the passer calls on Central Michigan. The Crush passed for 40 yards on the drive, getting them to the 8 yard line. First and goal: quarterback Jack Burnsides scrambles, and runs for 7 yards. Second and goal: halfback Kelvin Summers runs into the pile, no gain. Third and goal: Summers loses two yards. Drat. Still, 3 points were scored when Marcus Waters slotted through a 20 yard field goal, putting the OC on the board! Hooray! That's where the scoring ended for the Crush. The rest of the quarter for the Chippewas: Touchdown pass. INT return for a TD. 21-3 at the half. OK, so that's not so bad. Not going to be a comeback from the OC, we suck too much, but not horrible. The third quarter begins. CMU ball. Touchdown. Touchdown. Touchdown. Touchdown. Three touchdowns in the final 1:04 of the quarter made the score 49-3 at the final break, and it was looking... well, not great, for the Crush. It's not like dshban expected a win, but the defense was doing so well before! Then, the fourth quarter came. Touchdown. Punt return touchdown, of all things. dshban was getting angry. "OK, I get the point," coach Max Laughton said his thoughts were. "You're up by 60 points. Kneel." But, of course, Central Michigan angered coach Laughton even more when they went 4-wide with under a minute left in the game (and with a 63-3 lead, mind you), with the play ending in a 62 yard touchdown run. It then got worse, with a pick with 15 seconds left in the game being taken back to the house. "That was disgusting," said coach Laughton. "What kind of coach runs up the score when up 60 FREAKING POINTS in the fourth quarter? Mark my words, sig this, whatever. Central Michigan is going to be destroyed by Orange County in the future. I guaran-damn-tee it." "And yes, I wanted the CPU to dive with the ball and just down it. I suppose that would be expecting too much of EA." So, it ended, at 77-3, mercifully. Orange County drops to 0-2 with the loss, and faces their first Pac-10 game ever next week when they host Portland. dshban's Report Card Passing: D- Catching: D Running: D- Tackling: C Covering: B OVERALL: C- CMU 77, THE OC 3 First quarter CMU: Banks 1 run (Ray kick), 2:05 Second quarter The OC: Waters 20 field goal, 3:02 CMU: Banks to Whitaker 71 pass (Ray kick), 2:00 CMU: Brown 63 interception return (Ray kick), 0:00 Third quarter CMU: Banks to Essex 12 pass (Ray kick), 3:25 CMU: Whitaker 2 run (Ray kick), 1:04 CMU: Whitaker 3 run (Ray kick), 0:51 CMU: Banks to Washington 11 pass (Ray kick), 0:03 Fourth quarter CMU: Lee to Pearson 34 pass (Ray kick), 5:00 CMU: Mayle 60 punt return (Ray kick), 2:51 CMU: Krieg 62 run (Ray kick), 0:45 CMU: McBride 46 interception return (Ray kick), 0:15 Code:

AROUND THE PAC-10
![]() ![]() LA beats down Utah State; Salt Lake gets 2nd win of year Los Angeles got their first win of the year this week, with a 38-13 win over Utah State. The Devils scored 24 points in the second quarter to get the victory, and obviously didn't miss back-up wide receiver Alvin Abdullah, who was suspended for 3 weeks before the game because he was using others to take exams. The balanced offense of LA worked well, with quarterback John Green passing for 301 yards and 3 touchdowns, along with 2 interceptions, while halfback Perry Sapp gained 84 yards on 14 carries and had 2 touchdowns, including a 24 yard scamper in the second quarter. Two wide-outs starred for the Devils: Cedric Johnson has 9 receptions for 142 yards and a touchdown, while Zach Poole had 14 grabs for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns, in a Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week-earning performance. Right outside linebacker Phil Alexander was the star for the Los Angeles defense, with 9 tackles, 5 tackles for a loss and 2 sacks. Back-up defensive tackle Lewis Woods's 3 week suspension for an off-campus altercation probably had nothing to do with San Francisco's 66-10 loss to rivals Hawaii, I just needed to mention it. Hawaii QB Colt Brennan destroyed the Generals, passing for 387 yards and 6 touchdowns. In comparison, San Francisco quarterbacks (they played 3) combined to go 8 of 27 for 74 yards and 7 interceptions. Niiice. Starting halfback Eugene Bradford of San Fran only ran 5 times (?!?), but gained 45 yards and a touchdown on those carries. So it's not all bad. 10 tackles for left outside linebacker Cole Riley were pretty much irrelevant as the Rainbow Warriors destroyed the Generals. In another rivalry game, Fresno State beat down Sacramento, 48-27. Well, at least the Golden Bears scored a bit. Quarterback Patrick Williams of Sacramento went 9 of 16 for 137 yards, a TD and an INT, while his backup (who played a surprisingly large amount), Cameron Ham, went 7 of 25 for 168 yards, a TD and 2 picks. 30 yards rushing and a TD were halfback Dom McGuinness's results, while tight end Joe Shaw had 2 receptions for 132 yards and a touchdown, with his catches being lengths of 56 and 76 yards (76 yard = TD). Wow. Defensive tackle Michael Williams had 8 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss and a sack in the loss. ![]() More suspensions in Portland, but thankfully they're more backups. Quarterback Daniel Stallings will miss 3 games due to using others to take exams for him, while middle linebacker Aaron Lindsey's exam results have gotten progressively worse, meaning he missed the first half of this week's game. Speaking of which, Portland lost in it, to Florida International, 27-3. Yeah... that's not that good. Lance Gaddis completed 2 out of every 5 passes - 20 of 50 - for 280 yards and 3 intereptions. Again, not good. The less said about the running game the better, but at least wide receiver Darren McGee had 13 catches for 216 yards. Left outside linebacker Justin Gray had 13 tackles and a TFL. No, you didn't click on Jokerace's dynasty. Florida Atlantic won, defeating Phoenix, 50-14. The Fire kept up early, tying the game at 7 at the end of the first quarter, but the Owls powered away behind their halfback, not Maxwell Laughton, who gained 179 yards and 4 touchdowns on 23 carries. Back to Phoenix, who had quarterback Dustin Noel throw for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns in a solid effort. Halfback Josh Battle had 90 yards on 15 carries, quite a good day, while starting wide out Ryan Williamson had a massive 16 yards. Although, he also had 5 catches and 2 touchdowns. So it wasn't that bad. Cornerback Jerome Daniels had 7 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble in the loss. A defensive battle at the Kibbie Dome left Seattle with a bitter taste in their mouths as they lost, 10-3. The Bulldogs led 3-0 after a 38 yard field goal in the second quarter, and led until Idaho scored on a 50 yard touchdown pass at the beginning of the fourth, keeping the Vandals undefeated (wait, what?!?) and making them the first victors in this brand new rivalry. Seattle QB Jeremiah Hall went 15 of 30 for 78 yards and 3 interceptions, which is about what I expected from him, while HB Marvin Booker had a heck of a game, gaining 189 yards on 35 carries, but he just couldn't get into the endzone. WR A.J. Diles had 46 yards on 8 catches, and DT Larry Jackson led the Bulldog defense with 5 tackles, 2 TFLs, a sack and a forced fumble. ![]() Las Vegas had their first loss of the season when they were defeated by Utah, 33-14. Las Vegas scored all of their points in the first quarter, leading after a 17 yard TD pass from QB Chris Henshaw to TE J.J. Taylor, and a 32 yard interception return touchdown by nickel cornerback Nick Henderson. But the Utes came back, scoring 19 points in the second quarter - including 2 field goals by a guy named Sanchez, followed by an INT return TD by a guy named Sanchez and Sanchez kicking the extra point. I don't know if it's the same guy. Chris Henshaw had 155 yards passing, one TD and 4 INTs for the Lightning, while starting halfback Phillip Spicer had only 2 yards rushing. That's worse than the OC! WR Jerry Garrett had 7 catches for 50 yards, while middle linebacker Dedrick Williams had 13 tackles, 2 TFLs plus a sack, but was outshone for the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week award, which was given to fellow Lightning defender Nick Henderson who had 2 tackles along with an INT returned for a TD. Salt Lake lost two backups before the game had even begun: left tackle Travis Murphy was suspended for 2 quarters for being half an hour late for practice (WTF?) while TE Ken Richardson was suspended for 3 games for being involved in an academic fraud scandal. Idiot. This, along with the old suspension of starting QB Henry Nicholson... caused Salt Lake to win? Alright then, so much for that segue. Fittingly, it was a defensive battle for the Blackbirds, as they won 13-6 over Kent State. 42 and 24 yard field goals by Tom Davis and a 62 yard TD pass from Drew Foster to Nathan Bates (Backup QB to backup WR FTW? Brilliant!) were enough for Salt Lake to be victorious, while they held the Golden Flashes to two field goals. Drew Foster passed for 97 yards and a TD in a very good game managing performance, while halfback Jesse Matthews rushed for 63 yards on 20 carries. The aforementioned Nathan Bates had 4 catches for 71 yards and a TD, while the leader defensively for the Blackbirds was defensive tackle William Corbett, who had 6 tackles, 2 TFLs and a sack. Salt Lake's won two in a row! Wow! Naughty naughty, San Diego - they lost two players before this week's game against Michigan State. True freshman and starting left defensive end Kody Nelson was lost for 3 games due to an altercation at his apartment, while backup punter Jason Lewis was involved in an altercation at a San Diego club (lots of altercations) and is out for 3 games. Not that a backup punter matters. Especially when you're facing a Big Ten team (even if it is Michigan State). Sparty defeated the Knights, 30-3, with 4 field goals and two passing TDs thrown in the mix. QB Derek Southall was not great, or even bad for San Diego - he was just horrible, going 7 of 34 for 36 yards and 3 INTs. Halfback Obadiah Howell gained 54 yards on 10 carries, but the less said about the receiving the better. Two players had the exact same stats on defense for the Knights - middle linebacker John Branch and right outside linebacker Brian Marcus both had 11 tackles, 2 TFLs and a sack. ![]() (#11) Halfback Quentin McAfee of Portland first rolls the ball away (?) and then ducks a flying (#69) defensive end Alan King of Orange County. SHARK ATTACK The OC's first Pac-10 game ends in 52-21 loss to Portland Newport Beach, CA. (AP) — It started off well for Orange County. A 5 yard pass from Jack Burnsides to Marcus Evans not only gave the Crush their first touchdown of the season, but the lead! The OC? Winning? Implausible! Of course, this ridiculous-ness ended soon after. 4 Portland touchdowns later - two 45 yard touchdown passes, an INT return TD and a 50 yard TD run gave the Sharks a lead which they would not relinquish, as Portland defeated Orange County, 52-21. The OC had their moments, though. In particular, Kelvin Summers, who had a 30 yard touchdown run which was incredible - he outran some people! - and then the Crush had the apparently longest touchdown pass in NCAA history or some idiocy, a 77 yard pass from Burnsides to Summers. Not that it mattered, with the OC allowing a punt return touchdown and two INT return TDs. And the whole 283 yards, 3 TD passing day out by Sharks QB Lance Gaddis was pretty helpful for Portland, too. The OC's kicker who punts, Jake Mayle, was suspended before the game for the game for being behind neccessary hour requirements or some crap. I dunno. Didn't matter. There was roughly one billion penalties, with at least 12 out of the actual 14 that occured being holding, despite the fact that dshban turned down the slider all the way. Stupid EA. Jack Burnsides of the OC continued his interception woes, throwing 5 this game. Stupid dshban. Yeah, dshban sucks at passing. Oh well. dshban pretty much sucks in general at NCAA, which is why he's made a few changes to his depth charts. At wide receiver, the #1 is still impact WR Marcus Evans, but cornerback Jimmy Hendrix is #2, followed by the speedy Jamil Smith and the rest of the WR core. At cornerback, the #1 is Jimmy Hendrix, but the #2 is Jamil Smith, the wide out, while the #3 is some cornerback, if memory serves. #4? Halfback Kelvin Summers, because he's fast. And the #5 is WR Marcus Evans. I never said dshban was a good coach, either. So, the Crush lost, 52-21, not that anyone expected a victory. Orange County travels to the Pacific Northwest next week to face the Seattle Bulldogs. I predict we'll allow somewhere between 1 and 756 trillion yards on the ground. But that's just my pessimist side coming through. dshban's Report Card Passing: D+ Catching: C Running: D+ Tackling: B Covering: B OVERALL: C+ PORT 52, THE OC 21 First quarter The OC: Burnsides to Evans 5 pass (Waters kick), 4:24 PORT: Gaddis to Brown 45 pass (McCarthy kick), 3:33 PORT: Thomas 37 INT return (McCarthy kick), 3:08 Second quarter PORT: McAfee 50 run (McCarthy kick), 5:07 PORT: Gaddis to Brown 45 pass (McCarthy kick), 3:07 The OC: Summers 30 run (Waters kick), 0:45 PORT: Gaddis to O'Connor 3 pass (McCarthy kick), 0:21 Third quarter PORT: Brown 54 punt return (McCarthy kick), 1:08 The OC: Burnsides to Summers 77 pass (Waters kick), 0:00 Fourth quarter PORT: McCarthy 22 field goal, 2:05 PORT: Thomas 39 INT return (McCarthy kick), 1:44 Code:

Sacramento scored 4 touchdowns through the air, slicing open the Fire secondary, while Phoenix scored on a 33 yard pass in the 2nd quarter, a 48 yard field goal in the same quarter, and a safety with 1:54 to go in the game. Sacramento:
Phoenix:
Despite a 23 point third quarter, it took two touchdowns in the final quarter for Los Angeles to defeat Seattle, 40-36. The 3 yard run by halfback Perry Sapp gave the Devils the lead, and they were able to hold over the Bulldogs. Seattle was great in the redzone: all their touchdowns were of 6 yards in length or less - but they couldn't stop Los Angeles who got the win. Seattle:
Los Angeles:
San Francisco came out with all guns blazing this week, taking a 24-0 lead by the end of the first half. But Las Vegas came back, with three touchdown passes and an 18 yard field goal with 7 seconds left in the game sending us to overtime. The Generals stopped the Lightning on their possession, and a 7 yard touchdown run by Eugene Bradford was enough to give San Francisco their first win of the year, 30-24. Las Vegas:
San Francisco:
A late burst by San Diego got them over the line as they defeated Salt Lake, 24-6, to get theirr first win of the season. It was the expected defensive battle in the first three quarters, with the Knights leading 10-3 at the end of the third, but a touchdown run by halfback Obadiah Howell and a 40 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Derek Southall to wide receiver C.J. Cavka in the fourth quarter gave San Diego their eventual winning margin. Salt Lake:

![]() Left: Ouch. Right: BAM! A Crush player loses his lid on a big hit from a Bulldog. THE BULLDOG BULLDOZERS Seattle gains 277 on the ground, Hendrix only bright spot in 21-43 loss for the OC Newport Beach, CA. (AP) — At least Jimmy Hendrix tried. The impact cornerback had two of Orange County's touchdowns in today's game - both of them on special teams. He had a 58 yard punt return (see OC TV below the stats for the video) and a 90 yard kick return, so he certainly did his part. Well, on special teams, at least. He was the leader of a defense that gave up 277 yards on the ground today as Seattle (1-4) defeated the OC, 43-21. Bulldogs halfback Marvin Booker was the main offender, gaining 157 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 17 carries, continuing his fantastic year. The OC (0-4) tried to keep up, with Hendrix doing his part and quarterback Jack Burnsides only throwing 3 interceptions - although, to be fair, he threw about half as many passes as he usually does, so he had half as many picks. It was low scoring in the beginning, with Seattle only scoring on a 26 yard field goal in the first quarter to make it 3-0 at the end of the period. Then, the flood gates opened. The Bulldogs were deadly in the redzone, scoring 4 TDs and one FG in 5 trips inside the Crush 20. A 3 yard touchdown run by fullback Josh King followed by a 4 yard TD from Marvin Booker gave the Bulldogs a 17-0 midway through the second. The Crush tried to come back, though, with the aforementioned Jimmy Hendrix having a 58 yard punt return touchdown, making it a comeback-able for the OC 17-7 scoreline at the main break. But of course, Seattle dominated the third quarter, with another short Josh King touchdown (1 yard TD) followed by a 55 yard touchdown gallop by Booker to make it 31-7. And then they scored 10 more points in the fourth quarter. Give the OC credit though, they made a game of it. A 90 yard kick return touchdown by Hendrix followed by a 56 yard touchdown pass from Jack Burnsides to wide receiver Marcus Evans making it 41-21. But as soon as the OC tried to come back, they screwed up. A beautiful punt by the Bulldogs put the Crush at the 2 yard line, yet Burnsides was able to complete a long pass to Marcus Evans to the 40. First down, right? Nope. Despite the slider being at 0%, holding was called on an offensive lineman of the OC. And, if you know your football, you'll know that holding in the endzone is a safety. Thus, the final scoreline was 43-21 in favour of Seattle. Backup Bulldogs fullback Jason Harley was suspended before the game for the game for not having paperwork to explain his absences from the group, or some crap. Just so you know. The loss means the OC replaces Seattle in the cellar of the Pac-10. Orange County travels home now where next week they'll host Sacramento, while Seattle has a bye. dshban's Report Card Passing: C- Catching: C Running: D+ Tackling: A+ Covering: A+ OVERALL: B SEA 43, THE OC 21 First quarter SEA: Seward 26 field goal, 3:22 Second quarter SEA: King 3 run (Seward kick), 5:14 SEA: Booker 4 run (Seward kick), 3:11 The OC: Hendrix 58 punt return (Waters kick), 1:07 Third quarter SEA: King 1 run (Seward kick), 3:15 SEA: Booker 55 run (Seward kick), 2:08 Fourth quarter SEA: Booker 11 run (Seward kick), 5;25 SEA: Seward 44 field goal (Seward kick), 4:06 The OC: Hendrix 90 kick return (Waters kick), 3:55 The OC: Burnsides to Evans 56 pass (Waters kick), 2:30 SEA: Holding in end-zone, safety, 0:40 Code:

Right tackle of the Knights, Jack Dawson, was suspended for 3 games for forging signatures, which probably hurt San Diego who dropped to 1-4 with the loss. Sacramento moves to 3-1 on the year. San Diego:
Sacramento:
Phoenix lost two defensive starters before the game: strong safety Elton Harris was suspended for the second time this season, this time for 4 games for missing a film study session (?), while right outside linebacker Richard Griffin is gone for 3 weeks because he skipped numerous team meetings and "has no respect for team rules". This probably hindered the Fire as they were shut-out by San Francisco, 21-0. The Generals had 2 passing touchdowns for some reason and won their second game in a row, moving to 2-3, while Phoenix is now 0-4. San Francisco:
Phoenix:
In the battle of the teams that wear black and are also 2-2, Los Angeles came out victorious as they defeated Salt Lake, 17-10. Two touchdowns in the first quarter - including a 75 yard interception return by cornerback Bryan Adams - gave the Devils the win. Blackbirds quarterback Henry Nicholson returned from a suspension, and threw 2 picks. Los Angeles's backup halfback Leif Browton was lost for 3 weeks before the game due to an altercation at his apartment. Los Angeles:
Salt Lake:
The loss of backup defensive tackle George Horne for 3 weeks seemed to distract Las Vegas as they lost to Portland, 42-10. 28 points in the second quarter set up the victory for the Sharks, with quarterback Lance Gaddis passing for 5 touchdowns. The Lightning drop to 1-3 with the loss, while Portland moves to 3-2. Portland:
