View Full Version : Offensive Balance vs. Offensive Specialty

Assuming all effectiveness equal, which do you guys regard as more threatening? Someone who maintains a near perfect 50/50 pass-run ratio or someone like Whitepony who would throw the ball upwards of about 70% of his plays (or, as the case may be for some of you, pound the rock that many times). Is it better to be decently good at two things or really good at just one thing? Is it more effective to be able to pass/run with impunity or mix it up?

Okay, it'll probably be 45 minutes to an hour before I can get on, though. You still going to be on at 10:15 CST?
I haven't got a new offense...but I've got a new way of keying on the D that I think will help.

ok
Are we talking in a pure football sense, or just video game sense? Since I don't have the vid skills, I'm thinking of this question in real football terms. Somehow the Georgia Hawaii matchup comes to mind. I think you need to set one up with the other, and to present a lopsided offense that is pass heavy will key the defense and create an imbalance. Pressure the quarterback and force the run game. Hawaii's pass heavy strategy should have worked even with mismatches on the line: shotgun and short quick dump-offs, but it didn't. Georgia knew they did not have to defend the run anywhere near the middle of the LOS. Without a solid running game, the passing game will collapse, no? Seems like percentages of pass/run should remain situational more than strategic (in the structureed percentage sense like I think you mean) from the outset.
Once I develope my base for an offense, I plan to exploit passing options by creating run pressure. Since the threat of a turnover is higher for pass plays, I won't come out with pass-heavy formations unless I need them to counteract something the defense is doing to my run game, unless I sense that the D is "too close" then I would like to send a pass over the top.

More annoying: Knowing that a guy is fixing to pass the ball for the 40th time and not being able to do anything about it.
More terrifying: Not having a clue what a guy is fixing to do and not being able to do anything about it.

Really depends on how you want to do it. Because of my offense, i can go 70% run 30% pass and stay relatively diverse, because of spread option looks, base run, PA Pass, and sprint outs. If your trying pro style, it has to be 50 50 or youll get killed

They need to quit taking our vocabulary.
In other news, I played a friend last night who doesn't really know much about football. He picked Boise State, I went with TTU.
Well, using my new method for keying on the D, I'd put up 40 points on him (okay, not the best accomplishment, I know) with two and a half minutes left in the fourth, two of which came from a safety. I'm really liking it. When I release the Techstravaganza 2.0, I'll be sure to include the key. It's almost moronically simple and I can't believe I didn't think of it before. I actually got it off Wikipedia.[laugh]
BTW, the Techstravaganza is far more balanced than it originally was. QB Slot Option from the gun (just the handoff, not the pitch), is a great play, especially if the D is thinking pass.

No, not copy. There is a subtle difference. In OK we say fixin' and in Texas you apparently say 'fixing'...subtle but very important difference. :)
