I just played in a tournament on Heisman mode. This tournament was not very high level and several players literally not touching their controller on defense (!?!?!).

This actually worked out pretty well for them and put the following question in my mind.

What weight do you put in each of the following factors on having a stout defense:

1) Talent
Teams with lots of 90+ players and a high overall rating (A+,A)

2) Scheme
You, the "coach" making the right play calls per the situation... aka, guessing what the offense is trying to do

3) Stick Skills
Taking control of a safety, linebacker, d-lineman and wrecking havoc with sacks, user picks etc.

What do you think is most important and why?

Since I never seem to be able to get the higher talented players I'm going after I usually have to use strategy to win on defense. I usually blitz alot, which usually gets me in trouble alot, but I'm trying to force the QBs hand by making him throw quicker than he should. If you come up against a super oline this usually doesnt work so lots of mixing up zone and man and an occasional zone blitz that works great if you dont do it too much. I usually play as the DE and try to pressure the QB.

Against a run first, run second, run third team, I control the middle linebacker in a 4-3. I just love running sideline to sideline and/or stuffing the run up the middle. If it's against a balanced player I usually control the free saftey and play a basic 4-3 cover-2 man under base defense a lot. From there I will manually hot route blitzes and zone coverages to confuse my look. I tend to play closer to the line with my saftey, kinda like an extra LB.

I feel like the reason you have a controller in your hands is to that you can play the game. I don't think people who just let the cpu play D for them are legit -- if i wanted to play against the cpu i would be playing dynasty... While i may not be the best at user picks and stick skills in general, i think it is much more fun to play that way and shows your true skill level of gameplanning and putting it into action... just my two cents.

I have terrible stick skills so I try to not touch the controller on defense as well.

For me it is all about the play calls.

Can I ask what does stick skills have to do with a gameplan?

I'm pretty good on the sticks and I tend play with SS/FS so I can control what you do and I would rather play D

I didn't say stick skills related to gameplanning -- what i said was i believe that a player's real skill is a combination of their gameplanning skills and their stick skills... i.e. calling your plays, and then actually using the players and playing the game. Hope that helps you

I you have good stick skills you can play center field with the FS like I used to do on the PS2 when you could get a reasonable camera angle. Now with everything so tight you have to really guess well and the passes come so fast even if you are in position you won't get the pic. With that being said I used to bring heat and then pick off the duck from the QB I can't do that on the PS3.
