The NHL's newest team unveils name, logo, and sweaters
LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas' first top level pro sports team unveiled their name, logo, and uniforms Saturday at UNLV's Thomas and Mack Center. The team's name and logo were created by famed comic book artist and writer Todd McFarlane, who is also part owner of the Edmonton Oilers. McFarlane choosing the name "Bandits" for the Las Vegas franchise was based on the slot machines, often referred to as "one-armed bandits", that have become synonymous with the city. "When it came time for us to settle on an identity, I knew Todd McFarlane was the man to go to. I love what he came up with for us. It fits the style of Las Vegas" owner Jerry Bruckheimer said.
The visual identity created by McFarlane includes three logos; a primary logo, a secondary logo, and the team's word-mark. The primary logo, which will be used most often and will be the only logo of the three seen on the Bandits' uniforms, features the "Las Vegas Bandit" wearing a black cowboy hat and a red bandanna covering the nose and mouth. The key feature of the Bandit logo is the eyes according to designer Todd McFarlane. "The eyes are normally the key feature in any facial logo. The eyes in this logo are great. They are completely black, which gives the Bandit a fearless, intimidating expression". The Bandits' secondary logo and word-mark are both made up of a western style font, also designed by McFarlane. The secondary logo includes a large red "B" with a smaller black "L" and "V" on the left and right side respectively. The word-mark includes the team's full name "Las Vegas Bandits" in black with a red stripe over the top and underlining the letters.
The sweaters that the Bandits will wear on the ice were also unveiled Saturday. The look of the sweater draws off the historic look of the famous Detroit Red Wings uniforms. "These jerseys are great. Reebok did a fantastic job and I really look forward to seeing these things on the ice" said Bruckheimer. Beginning with the 2007-2008 season, all 30 NHL teams will wear the new Reebok Edge jersey, which will give players a more streamline appearance and give them a more comfortable and better fitting uniform.
In other news, the Las Vegas Bandits will launch LVBandits.com next week. It will replace NHLVegas.com as the official home of the Bandits. Bruckheimer also announced that the Oilers front office staff will follow the team to Las Vegas.
