Boooooooooooo hiiiiiiiiiisssssssssssssss.

I can't decide if I'm booing the choice of Durant or just MM in general, since I've been a CH fan for years. I bought the first MM, haven't bought it since, just dissapointment after dissapointment.

Though I've always enjoyed that MM got the momentum meter right on the first try and NCAA had such a problem with it.

I remember 2K5 having a momentum meter. Or was that 2K6? One of those. Didn't see it on next gen. I thought it worked pretty damn good. [cool]

But this upsets me. 2k has become notorious for witholding news on games. Last year with 2k7 was excruciating. Now that EA has already put MM on the board, I'm really going to start joning for 2k8.

So Greg Oden is the cover boy for CH2K8. Old news?

I didn't know that, but I guess that's kind of like the draft last night. 2 video games vs. the top 2 picks. You knew who they were, but not necessarily what the order would be.

As previously mentioned by bruinfan on the MM board, Greg Oden is the cover ath for 2k8.

As much as I liked 2k7, there are some issues they need to address that could make 2k8 one of the best sports games ever. My main beef is the passing. I swear there are so many shitty passes in the game that the user has no control over that it almost ruins it for you.

I would love to be able to take a smaller school and edit their stadium in-season (or any stadium for that matter) so you can switch things up. It got to the point in my Morehead St. legacy that I stopped playing home games because I got bored with looking at the same place all the time.

On 2K's website, there's an article (http://2ksports.com/media/news.php?id=2593&gid=&iType=6) about the game, too. The only thing that talks about the actual game IMO was this:

For five straight years, the College Hoops 2K series has been the top rated* college basketball game on any console and College Hoops 2K8 looks to continue that legacy with advanced next generation visuals and hundreds of new animations. With a wealth of new innovative features, including all new crowd atmosphere that can affect the game performance of teams, College Hoops 2K8 is set to run the competition off the court with amazingly authentic college basketball video game action.
Sounds like HFA.

Let's hope that since it's not EA it will actually be implemented well and be a cool feature.

I have faith 2K will implement it better than EA.

Oddly, maybe it was just me, but in 2k7, I had a lot more trouble on the road. It might have just been the crowd noises in my head or something, but I had some tough road games.

Same here. For the most part, games were always easier at home versus on road. However, I still believe that 2K needs to improve the crowd/arena atmosphere. Does it need to come in the form of something like HFA? If it's implemented correctly, it'll be OK. Though, I'm leery of additions like that to any sports game.

The problem with that game is that when you simulate games, no team will ever average over 80 ppg for a season. So stupid that they can't get realistic scores. Most teams average around 50 ppg. Has no one told them sometimes college teams score more than 60 points in a game? I love this game but I can't play it if the scores for other teams around the country are so ridiculously bad.

This is one the greatest dynasty games out there. Building your career from a no-name coach at a no-name program to a national powerhouse is so fun. I love the year round recruiting which will be great in NCAA Football this year. The recruiting battles are always intense, and the gameplay is the best in the biz.

I could probably easily do a vector of it, it's just that I'm too lazy and I've got a high res version of it as is. I am re-doing the #1 logo though... just didn't like the way it looked. Who knows, maybe I go back and create a PS3 vector but then I'd have to create a 360 vector and so on and so forth...

Finally found a full size version to work from... What do you think? I still have a few things to finalize on the template but mostly that's just rearranging and organizing. Critiques are certainly welcome. The only thing I'm not satisfied with is the edges around the #1 circle but I won't likely mess with them...

As soon as the opening scene of College Hoops 2K8 opens up, you know that 2K Sports is really trying to take this game up a level. I was immediately pumped when I saw my Syracuse Orange come running out their locker room and down the hallway onto the court. From there I was able to take control of my players on the layup line (yep, it's returned from last year). This is going to be our year!

While NBA 2K8 is due out next week, 2K Sports is keeping the pedal to the metal and announced that NBA's cousin, College Hoops 2k8, is due out sometime in mid November. We like to call it NBA's cousin because while they are related and share some of the same similarities, College Hoops 2K8 has plenty of new additions this year that distinguishes itself. One of those new additions is something called The Sixth Man Advantage. As everyone knows the sixth man is usually a reference to the home team's crowd. This is depicted by a little meter at the bottom of the screen that fills up as the home team makes plays on offense and gets defensive stops in succession. The better you play, the louder your crowd gets and the meter starts to fill up. Once it reaches it's peak, the home team receives a performance and energy boost that will help you go on run of those classic 20-5 runs you see in college ball. The visting team can counter this by either calling a timeout or making a few baskets of it's own to quiet the crowd. The more subdued the crowd becomes, the meter begins to dwindle. So it seems to be pretty balanced on both ends as it can be countered.

Another addition is the All American Training Challenges. This is a separate mode where there are 14 drills that can be played. Your goal is to achieve a set amount of points in the timed events, achieving either a bronze, silver or gold medal. The drills even feature boss battles where you'll go up against some of the top college players in the game in the final battle. For example, if you decide to do the free throw drill and do it well, you'll have to go up against JJ Reddick and his 91% career FT shooting. These drills are also helpful in practicing a particular aspect of your game you'd like to strengthen. Even better these drills are also available inside the dynasty mode to help you build up whatever player attribute you choose. All the drills are listed below:
Line Course
Dribble Course
Free Throw
Short Range
Medium Range
Three Point
Attack Basket
Post Offense
Grab Rebound
Steal Challenge
Challenge Shot
Deny Position
Post Offense

You'll also be able to create plays this year. You'll have the ability to alter any of the pre-existing plays in the game as you see fit. Want to alter a particular motion play to get your star SF open? All you'll have to do is go into that particular play and you'll be able to change it. Once you're in the play, you'll see a diagram open up and you can move the ball markers around until the play runs the way you like it. Another bonus: you can take all your created plays online. I can see all the mini Coach K's now madly trying to draw up some off the chainz custom plays.

More hotness: Something 2K Sports is calling 2K Share Online. With that you can share team chants, plays and rosters online with your buddies. I know the roster part right now has some people's mouths open like it had mine when Anthony Chau mentioned this to me. If you have a lazy friend (like I am) who doesn't want to be bothered with naming his Syracuse squad, well you can do it for him and share it with him to download on his console. You can do the entire league if you so choose and share it with whomever you want. Is this hot or what?

The last new enhancement I saw was something called Maximum Passing. This isn't the maximum passing that you're used to seeing in sports games, as this is REAL maximum passing as different pass types are mapped to the face buttons. To go into Max passing mode, you hold down LB and press either the 'Y', 'B', 'A', or 'X' button depending on what type of pass you want to throw. 'Y' is a lob pass, 'X' is a chest pass, 'B' is a lead pass and 'A' is a bounce pass. This is a subtle addition that will alter gameplay greatly. Now you have total control on what kind of pass you want to throw depending on how the defense is set up.

Since College Hoops 2K8 uses a modified engine of NBA 2K8 you'll see other things you're already familiar with. The hot spots indicated by the cell phone bars under the player's feet (where you at?), and the new lock down defensive system make their way over from NBA 2K8. Don't get it twisted though, College Hoops is not NBA-lite. The new double team and trapping animations, post play, play calling mechanic and overall pace of the game give it a true college feel. Verne Linquist and Pat Rafferty return to call the action this year. Stay tuned for more info and a more in-depth preview of the game in the coming weeks.

Thanks for the info/link, gschwendt. CH 2K7 next-gen was a great game - but the atmosphere was the most-lacking aspect, IMO. Hopefully the 'sixth man' feature isn't overdone, as that could really make CH 2K8 one of the best hoops games ever made.

I've noticed on the 2K site, they are now claiming to be not only the highest-rated, but also the top selling basketball game. That's news to me, but great for them if true.

Heres a bigger question I have.

At the end of the game.. Will I be able to just simply run my guard to half court and throw it to him undefended, Or will the defense actually try to 'guard' an in-bounds play?

This is something that has bugged the absolute shit out of me and hasnt been looked at since the dawn of basketball video games.

Rumor has it there is a $399 40 gig PS3 coming out in late October or early November. It will supposedly be bundled with a Spiderman3 blu-ray, and maybe even have a rumble sixaxis, although I wouldn't bet on that. The timing works out pretty well with the release of 2k8 too, so start savin' :)

There are some pics now at IGN for the 360.

Once it reaches it's peak, the home team receives a performance and energy boost that will help you go on run of those classic 20-5 runs you see in college ball.

This is in NBA2k8 too, just implemented in a different way ... and it doesn't necessarily depend at all on who is home. Momentum in NBA2k8 is crazy. I've been on both sides of it. There are obvious 3-4 minute stretches where one team will make EVERY shot and the other team will miss EVERY shot, no matter how easy. You will be like WTF, no matter which side of the momentum you happen to be on. It's almost NCAA 07ish.

Still think CH2k7 will be a strong game though, and I still think NBA2k7 is a generally strong game ... I'm just saying.

Hands-On From Gamespot:

Rupp Arena's got it. Cameron Indoor Arena's got it. The Carrier Dome's got it. Heck, even Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum's got it. What's "it," you ask? Well, when basketball season arrives, "it" refers to the sixth man, also known as the advantage a basketball team can gain from the electricity of a fired-up home crowd when the baskets are falling and the good guys can do no wrong. In 2K Sports' upcoming College Hoops 2K8, that "sixth man" will be a big part of the college basketball gameplay experience, as we discovered today during our first hands-on session with the game.

The sixth-man feature in 2K8 is represented as a meter that's shown at the bottom of the screen during a game. By default, the meter is green and will be filled depending on which team you're using (a big program like Duke, for example, will start with about half of its meter filled when playing at Cameron Indoor Arena). Performing successful plays such as scoring baskets or stopping the opposing team will fill the meter up, whereas playing as if your players' shoes are filled with lead and their fingers are coated with motor oil will decrease the meter. If you fire up the crowd enough, the sixth-man meter will fill up completely and turn red, at which point your team will be feeding off the intensity of the crowd and earn temporary confidence as well as energy boosts in the process.

http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2007/283/reviews/941649_20071011_embed001.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:open_image_viewer%28%27941649%27,%2701%27,%27 6180862%27,%272007/283/reviews/941649_20071011_embed001.jpg%27,%27The%2Bcrowd%2Bi s%2Byour%2Bbest%2Bfriend%2Bin%2BCollege%2BHoops%2B 2K8.%2BThe%2Bnew%2Bsixth-man%2Bfeature%2Bcan%2Bgive%2Byou%2Ba%2Bboost%2Bwhe n%2Byour%2Bfans%2Bare%2Bfired%2Bup.%27,%27%27%29;)
The crowd is your best friend in College Hoops 2K8. The new sixth-man feature can give you a boost when your fans are fired up. (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:open_image_viewer%28%27941649%27,%2701%27,%27 6180862%27,%272007/283/reviews/941649_20071011_embed001.jpg%27,%27The%2Bcrowd%2Bi s%2Byour%2Bbest%2Bfriend%2Bin%2BCollege%2BHoops%2B 2K8.%2BThe%2Bnew%2Bsixth-man%2Bfeature%2Bcan%2Bgive%2Byou%2Ba%2Bboost%2Bwhe n%2Byour%2Bfans%2Bare%2Bfired%2Bup.%27,%27%27%29;)

The boost to players' default energy will replenish some of the energy points they've lost over the course of the game. Once the sixth-man bonus runs out--and the meter does deplete gradually--your players' confidence attribute will return to normal and their energy level will return to a slightly higher level than where it was when you first earned the bonus. Along with the obvious visual of the sixth-man meter filling up as you play, the audio clues are unmistakable--to our ears, the crowds in 2K8 sound more alive and variable than ever. When you've got your "sixth man" working for you in the game, you'll know it. Of course, sixth-man bonuses are available only when you're playing at home (or at a neutral site).

Naturally, the college basketball game comes after 2K's NBA series, and one of the nice things about that is the team behind the college game can take the best features from 2K and tweak or improve them for the college game. Remember the hot spots feature in 2K8--a cell-phone signal-like meter that indicates the favorable spots on the floor for your players to shoot from? That's been tweaked a bit in College Hoops 2K8 to simply indicate a player's proficiency at shooting from a certain range, no matter where he is on the floor.

Another example: the visual play-calling system that diagrams the plays on the floor to assist you with how to run particular plays. In College Hoops 2K8, it's got an official name this time around--play vision--and works very similarly to the NBA series. Plays still unfold one step at a time--start the player here, move to there, now pass the ball, set up the screen, and so on--but it's an invaluable tool for learning some of the specific plays in the game. A practice mode will let you take all of these plays into the gym and run them over and over to your heart's content, against multiple types of defense (or no defense at all). You can also switch to the defensive team on the fly and try different defensive looks against the different types of offensive plays in the game. It's a good thing, too, because there will be approximately 80 plays to practice on both sides of the ball.

Passing has been changed up in College Hoops 2K8. Now, in addition to the default passing system, you can select which kinds of passes you want to make by pressing the left bumper (on the Xbox 360) and a face button. You hit X for chest pass, A for bounce pass, Y for lob, and B for leading pass, which is really only effective when your target player is in motion. Getting used to these new passes will take some time, but certain moves are sure to be deadly weapons when used properly, such as the ability to bounce the ball underneath a tight defender, or to toss it over the hands of an outstretched opponent. Isomotion controls will also be controlled with the face buttons: B for crossover, Y for spin, and the shoulder buttons for hesitation moves.

Pass your way out of trouble with 2K8's upgraded pass controls. Say that you're getting owned by your archrival for the first half. You can't get your fast break together, you're getting punished on the offensive boards, and your opponent is draining threes on you all day long. You head into halftime in 2K8 and need to make some adjustments, right? This year, at halftime, you'll be presented with a laundry list of things you've done right (and wrong) during the first half. Most, if not all of the entries on the list can be addressed with game-plan slider adjustments. For example, if you're not getting enough offensive rebounds, you pump up the crash-boards slider; you can move up the defensive-pressure slider to get some hands in your opponent's face at the 3-point line; and you can pump up the fast-break slider to generate more chances on the break. Each time the computer decides that you've addressed a concern, it will check it off the adjustments list. Of course, you can game-plan all you want, but the execution will still be all up to you.

The presentation in 2K8 has gotten some overhauls as well. First, big-time venues such as Kentucky's Rupp Arena have been built from the ground up with improvements to signage and more accurate placement of student sections. The game includes a bunch of new player animations, particularly on the defensive side, and new camera angles during stoppages in play add some nice variety to the game. Verne Lundquist and Bill Rafferty are the booth team, just like last year (Verne continues to be awesome; Bill continues to be...excitable), and the new sideline reporter for 2K8 is CBS' Tracy Wolfson. The team will be calling all the games you play, whether with big-time teams or even smaller programs such as the three new additions to the massive team roster in 2K8: Florida Gulf Coast, Cal-State Bakersfield, and South Carolina Upstate (Spartans holler!).

The new All American Training Challenge feature includes 14 hoops-related drills you can compete in. Drills include the basics--such as running suicides or making your way through an obstacle course while pulling off specialized dribble moves such as crossovers and spins--to more complicated challenges, such as the passing drill, which tests your ability to make the correct pass to a guarded teammate using the game's new passing controls. The better your pass (based on the position of your teammate and his defender) the more points you'll earn in the process. Depending on your performance, you can earn a bronze, silver, or gold medal for each drill. If you earn a gold medal, you'll unlock an additional drill where you take on a real-life player at that drill, such as facing off with J.J. Redick in a free-throw contest or beating Glen Davis in a rebounding match. Beat the pros and you'll earn an achievement. In addition, the feature will track your score for all drills and save it to your game profile.

Newly built mascots make their way into the game, which is great. But what does this guy have to do with a Cyclone? (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:open_image_viewer%28%27941649%27,%2703%27,%27 6180862%27,%272007/283/reviews/941649_20071011_embed003.jpg%27,%27Newly%2Bbuilt%2 Bmascots%2Bmake%2Btheir%2Bway%2Binto%2Bthe%2Bgame% 252C%2Bwhich%2Bis%2Bgreat.%2BBut%2Bwhat%2Bdoes%2Bt his%2Bguy%2Bhave%2Bto%2Bdo%2Bwith%2Ba%2BCyclone%25 3F%27,%27%27%29;)

One of the underrated features in 2K8 has to be the new 2K Share function. Here, you can create custom rosters, game-settings files, playbooks, legacy files, and even custom chants you've created with the built-in chant creator--then you save them and share them with your friends. We'll be counting down the hours until someone gets that first full NCAA roster online, which we can then use to get all the real player names in the game. You'll be able to search for files by gamertag and even rate files so that the best files will be readily available to everyone.

In all, with an increased focus on strategy and better passing controls, it looks to be another fine season of College Hoops 2K8 ahead for fans of the series. Check back next week for a look at the game's updated legacy mode, as well as more in the weeks leading up to its November release.

I think I'll be trading in NBA 2k8 towards it in November. I like NBA 2k8 alot, but I know I don't have time to focus on two basketball games. I'm thinking the college one will be better because you can't just control the game with superstars online. Plus, true zone defenses!

edit: let me clarify, i love this idea, because it makes getting the rosters so much easier. instead of having to search the internet for a reliable, and free downloadable rosters to put on my memory card and transfer to the 360 hard drive. i can just brows xbox live and download them, with the rosters being rated by other users on how good they are, i love it, it's awesome.

Madden on PS2 has the EA Locker which allows sharing of franchises, not sure about rosters though. And yes....NCAA FB badly needs the ability to share rosters/dynasties online.

I did rosters for CH 2K7 (PS2) last year, but am unsure if I will do them for next-gen this year. (I already know I am not buying the last-gen version.)

I'd like to get both CH 2K8 and MM08, but I think I'll settle for one on release day and buy the other when it gets cheaper around the holidays or early spring. (That probably means MM08 at release and CH 2K8 later on, as 2K games get cheaper sooner than EA titles IMO.)

One thing I saw is on offense, non-controlled players would show icons. I was assuming that with the new passing controls, these icons would indicate the target of your pass. Just a guess, but as someone who has lived and died with icon passing, this is a great feature.

Sixth man is cool, but I hope it's implemented correctly. There are some arenas that can be pretty tough places to play - WKU's arena is definitely one - but if you don't have the athletes, as we have not had for a few seasons, sixth man doesn't matter.

I cant wait to start another one with the Gents of Centenary!

GO GENTS GO!

There was brief discussion of the Gents at OS where I saw that pic. UL-Calcutta in that list seems like it could be Centenary. Being that the school is listed in Shreveport, and not Calcutta, LA, and that they are in the Summit League, is a pretty solid giveaway. If that is the case, it's curious that Cent would be pulled from the game.

I've been badly wanting this feature for years; now if I want only a certain number of guys in my rotation, I can tell the CPU this for when it sims. Alright, I finally made it through this whole thread, and I'm really excited for this game --- maybe the first time that I've been excited for a game in a long time.

I had a question for everyone who played legacy mode. How many years did it take you to matriculate to a major-conference school? Last year, I think I spent three years at UC-Riverside...two NCAA berths and a 2nd-round appearance. Took a job at Indiana State, and was there FOREVER --- 8 years, had six NCAA appearances and two sweet 16's, and didn't get a sniff from any team that was in a better conference than the MVC. Finally, after 8 years, I got a job offer...from Marshall. Took that, played about three years, with two NCAA appearances, and still hadn't heard anything from a power conference team. At that point I kinda lost interest in CH2K7.

So what was everyone else's progression timeline? And do you think they'll alter it a little bit in this year's game?

I did just fine. Started at Northern Colorado, 2 years there with 2 tourneys, one miracle elite 8 appearance, thanks to one hot 3 point shooter. Then onto Nevada, 4 years, 1 national championship. Here's a quick research question. Who has made more NCAA tournaments, South Alabama or Western Kentucky?

I honestly don't know the answer. But, I know of at least 5 NCAA tournament appearances by South Alabama in my lifetime. It would be interesting to find out, since these are usually the two top programs in Sun Belt basketball year in and year out.

Funny thing is, we lost to Arizona who eventually won it all in 97', and we lost to Florida who eventually won it all in 06'. Both were very close first round games until the last few minutes. Using fool's logic, we can assume that if you beat South Alabama in the NCAA tournament, you will end up winning the National Championship. :)

WTF!?!?! no 1999 Arkansas State? A team that played Utah extremely close for a half only to get blown out in the second in the first round of the tourney? A team that did so very little yet still earned their coach a now 10 year extension on his contract? How is that not a classic team!?

No it shouldn't. 2K got it right. Duke has their bench on the off-camera side, so they can display the Crazies.

Not that it matters much, but you're wrong. When looking at the championship banners, the Crazies are on the left hand side. Yet in this picture, the bench is on that side.

BTW, played the demo of this today, and it's pretty solid. Only negative I've seen is that the cpu grabbed a lot of off. rebs. But I'm pumped for the release.

maybe there are some conferences with lower division teams in them, and to fill out the conference rosters, instead of adding a D2 team that isn't eligible for the D1 postseason, they just created a school that would be eligible? maybe?

Have you played previous versions of CH on PS2?

I played 2K5 and 2K7 on PS2 and thought it was OK.....didn't get into it too much. However, the next-gen version was amazing IMO and a lot of fun. If you like/love college basketball, I'd recommend at least giving it a rental.

2k5 was decent, but 2k6 on ps2 owned my life. i played for months with no let up. i believe i finished 10+ season playing all the games. the difference between 2k6 on ps2, then on to 2k7 on 360 was crazy, but still felt familiar. i loved that. 2k8 looks to just keep adding on. i can't wait

Football on next gen is a little better than on last gen ... however, basketball on next gen is AMAZING when compared to last gen. If you play a next gen basketball game such as NBA2k8, you will think last gen basketball games played and looked like an atari.

Great producer blog (http://www.sportsgamer.com/content/1340/college-hoops-2k8-hoop-dreams-part-1) available to read at sportgamer.com.

I recommend going and reading the whole thing, but here is a great excerpt:

Last night I was thinking to myself, “how great is 2K Share?” I mean really, it's the coolest feature we've ever put in College Hoops. I say that without hesitation now the more I think about it. New to 2K8 and possibly the best part of customization is that you can now share your files with others online. If you’ve changed anything with regards to rosters, settings, chants, created plays and playbooks and even Legacy files, you can share them with anyone else that has an online account with their Xbox 360 or PS3. With being able to share so many awesome things with friends and others without having to buy and external device or buy a memory unit from someone online, you can now share or grab a file immediately after its uploaded. It's not like this kind of thing has never been done before in a game, but it's rarely been done in a sports game and especially one that is as customizeable as College Hoops.

I'm the type of person that has a really hard time playing a college sports game without the real players. Yes, our game is another in the long line of college games that does not allow real likenesses and names for collegiate athletes, which is completely understandable. But you know there are people out there who recreate the players in our game to be more like the real ones. I'm willing to bet someone will have a roster on 2K Share within the first couple days of release that closely mimics real college basketball for me to download. That right there completely changes the game for me. The other cool thing, and I know this is super hardcore and maybe "geek" of me, but I can share my Legacy file with others. That means I can have a friend across the country start up a Legacy with me and we can literally play a "chess" game across the country. I play my game, save it, share it, he grabs it and plays his. I'm not guessing a whole lot of people will do this, but while we were in development and creating 2K Share we figured, 'what the heck? Why not?"
