Aggie Update

http://www.gast-gazette.com/pix/Hornets/2000Roster/EavesJ.jpg

After an abysmal (1-26) campaign in 2002-2003, including a humiliating 107-70 loss against Howard, it was quite clear that changes were desperately needed. Enter, first-year head coach, Jerry Eaves.

Jerry Eaves was a starting 2-guard on the University of Louisville 1980 Championship team. He was the 55th overall pick to the Utah Jazz in the 1982 NBA Draft. He spent 4 years in the NBA with the Jazz, Hawks, and Kings. He averaged 6.7 points and 2.5 assists in 168 games in the NBA.

From 1990-94 he worked as an assistant head coach at Howard University. And from 1994-1995 he worked with Paul Silas in New Jersey as an assistant and spent 1996-1999 back at Louisville as an assistant to Hall of Famer Denny Crum. Last year Eaves spent the season with the Cleveland Cavaliers franchise.

At North Carolina A&T, Eaves will hope to bring A&T out of the basement of the MEAC to contend for a title. Eaves favors defense, sound-passing and good ball movement above all else. Which could be just what the Aggies need to pull them out from the cellar. It should be a great season!

Spotlight On: The Players

Brian Faulcon 5'10 180 So.
Brian will begin the year as starting point guard for the Aggies. Spent last year as a backup to Tyrone Green. Averaged 4.9 ppg, 2.5 apg, 37% FG. One of the best 3-pt shooters on the team.

Steven Koger 5'10 190 Jr.
Aggies highest returning scorer from last year, averaging 12.3 ppg, and 2.4 rpg. Will man the 2-guard slot occupied by Landon Beckwith last year. Koger will have to carry a lot of the load for the Aggies, as he is arguably there best shooter

Sean Booker 6'3 210 Fr.
Aggies 2nd biggest recruit, will fill void left by transfer of Michael Fitzpatrick. Raw-talent, but great low-post player should blossom under tutledge of Eaves.

Greg Roberts 6'5 211 Fr.
Small for a power forward, but hungry on the glass. Need to work on his low-post game, but Eaves is great in that department. Can hit the long ball with accuracy.

Chris Ferguson 6'7 200 Sr.
One of two seniors on the team, and the lone senior in the starting lineup. Ferguson had his best season last year, averaging 4.7 ppg, and 8.1 rpg, shooting 44%. Great down low.

The Bench:
Clinton Green, 6'3 198 So. PG
Michael Hayes, 6'1 175 So. SG
Jeff Alvis, 6'7 213, Jr. PF
Rechodd Carter, 6'0 175, Jr. SG
Gregory Davis, 6'8 221 Jr. SF

Aggie Update

November 23, 2003
Tomorrow night at 8:00 PM the North Carolina A&T Aggie's season will be underway as they travel across state to face the Conferance USA's own Charlotte 49ers.

This game looks to be a very tough one, and while the Aggies are a heavy underdog, the thought of upset is always in the back of everyone's mind. The young Aggies are hungry and out to prove that they are better than last year's 1-26 showing.

The Aggies will have to contain the Niners in the paint in order to make any type of stand in this one. 7-footer Martin Iti can bang away down low relentlessly and they will be force to double guard him in the paint constantly. Eddie Basden and Demon Brown can be lights out if they get into a rhythm. This looks to be a big test early on in the season for the Aggies.

Demon Brown & Co. scorch A&T 94-70

UNCAT : 31 : 39 -70
UNCCH : 48 : 46 - 94

The first game of the season wasn't pretty, but it did answer a lot of questions that the North Carolina A&T Aggies had. The Aggies got off to a slow start shooting only 36% in the first half, going 2 for 10 from beyond the arc. But eventually they settled down, took wiser shots and ended up shooting 40% on the game, 3-7 from downtown in the second half. The Aggies were no match however for the Charlotte 49ers who shot 52% and an astonishing 41% from tre-land (10-24).

The game was tied 21-21 in the first half but it was all downhill from there. The Niners posted a 12-2 scoring run and ended the half leading 48-31. Freshman center Marvin Iti had 11 rebounds in the first half and ended with 17 in the game. The second half was certainly better for the Niners as they settled down. They didn't commit nearly as many fouls in the second half but still managed to apply the same amount of pressure.

One thing that this game did prove is that the Aggies will have to get more from their starters or else a lineup shuffle may be in order. Steven Koger led all Aggies with 17 pts (7-16) while Chris Ferguson grabbed 13 boards. With 13 minutes to go in the 1st half, forward Greg Roberts got tangled up going for a rebound and sprained his neck, early prognosis says he could be sidelined 2-3 weeks.

The Aggies can take away from this that they need to limit turnovers, get more productivity out of their starters, and knock down open shots. The Aggies will lick their wounds and turn their focus towards Nov. 26th, when they face the Alabama A&M Bulldogs.

Ferguson grabs A&T's first win vs. A&M

The Aggies started out hot and cooled off but managed to secure their first victory of the season. The Aggies came out blistering shooting above 50% on their first 15 shots. In the first half the Aggies when 3-10 from 3-point range. A 10-point run with 11 minutes to go kept the game out of reach early and the Aggies went to the locker room with a 40-21 lead.

The second half started out as A&M staged a minor comeback that included a few 6-0 runs. But the Aggies resiliently stormed back due to the talented guard play of Brian Faulcon and Steven Koger. They kept it out of reach from the Bulldogs for the rest of the second half. The Aggies cooled down to a modest 41% from the field while A&M hovered around 38% most of the game. Brian Faulcon led all scorers with 17, plus 5 assists. Koger chipped in 15 and Jeff Alvis added a double-double 12 points 10 rebounds en route to a 75-50 Aggie victory.

Aggies Get First Winning Streak Since 01-02 Season

November 29th, 2003: Greensboro, NC
The Aggies ventured home fresh off only their 2nd win in 2 years. Before Saturdays game against the Radford Highlanders, senior Chris Ferguson said in an interview, "I already know this season will end much better than last year, and I'm going to do as much as I can to ensure that."

Actions speak louder than words, and Chris Ferguson knows this all too well. The Highlanders came out as if on a mission, they made their first 4 shots and looked like they would cruise away easily with the victory. Junior center, Kyle Zaharias reach double-double status in the first half, grabbing 12 rebounds to go with 10 points. The Aggies were also in foul trouble early, notching the bonus with 8 minutes to play in the half. Starting PG Brian Faulcon had 3 fouls in the first half and played only 18 minutes. This could have been a blessing in disguise however as it allowed sophomore PG Clinton Green to run the offense, and run he did. Green ended the first half 3-5 with two 3-pointers, as NC A&T went into the locker room with a 38-36 lead.

The second half was the beginning of the end for the Highlanders. The Aggies came back shooting lights out led by Clinton Green's brilliant play. A 9-0 run with 13 minutes to go in the game, 5 pts of which were from Green, may have been the straw that broke the camel's back. The Aggies held the Highlanders leading scorer in Brandon Jeffers to only 6 pts and 1 reb. And held Zaharias to only 2 pts and 4 rebs in the second half. Chris Ferguson continued his stellar play this season, notching his first double-double of the season with 13 pts and 15 rebounds. Koger led all scorers with 15 points, Michael Hayes and Clinton Green chipped in 12 and 13 points off the bench, respectively, as the Aggies cruised in the second half to their 2nd victory of the season.

Billikens out-muscle Aggies for the win

November 30th 2003: St. Louis, MO:
The Aggies came into St. Louis Sunday on the tail of their first winning streak in 2 years. After beating Radford Saturday afternoon they hopped on a plan that evening and journeyed west to St. Louis. The physical strains of playing two games in 24 hours seemed very apparent in the Aggies Sunday.

The Aggies made 1 of their first 11 shots, as Saint Louis climbed to an early lead in front of their home crowd. The Aggies never led in the game, but staged a few minor comebacks here and there. The biggest was a 7-0 run with 4:30 to go in the 1st half. Saint Louis PG Josh Fisher was lights out registering 15 pts in the first half and the Billikens finished the half with a 40-32 lead.

The second half was all downhill. It seemed like the Aggies could never find their shots. Faulcon was an abysmal 1-8 from downtown, and nobody from the Aggies bench stepped up to carry the load. Saint Louis outrebounded A&T 29-18 in the second half and finished with a 77-66 victory at home.

The lone bright spot for the Aggies was Chris Ferguson who earned his second straight double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. But even he was upstaged by the awesome performance of Saint Louis's Izik Obanon who finished with 14 pts and 21 rebounds.

Greg Roberts will be back in uniform for the Aggies but head coach Jerry Eaves has told interviewees that Jeff Alvis will still get the start at the PF position and Greg Roberts will have to prove that he is back up to speed in order to return to the starting lineup.

Aggies lose more than game in Greenville

December 10, 2003: Greenville, NC:
The Aggies came into Greenville on 10 days rest. Greg Roberts, who had missed all but 4 minutes of the first 4 games of the year due to a strained neck, made his pseudo-debut tonight. The Aggies came out hungry and after East Carolina scored the first bucket of the game, the Aggies rattled off a 7-0 run. The Aggies continued to hang with the favored Pirates, until tragedy struck. With 8 minutes to go in the first half, Chris Ferguson came down hard while driving to the basket. He clutched his right leg and was escorted to the locker room. A few minutes later, diagnosis arrived: broken left fibula, out for a month. From here on out, it got ugly for the disspirited Aggies. They missed shot after shot, made silly mistakes, and the Pirates took a 38-24 lead into the break.

The second half was more of the same for the Aggies, making only 12 of 38 shot attempts. ECU stayed pretty consistant througout the second half while NC A&T struggled inside. The Aggies did find a little solace outside going 4 of 7 from 3-land opposed to 2-10 in the first half. The Aggies completely out rebounded the Pirates 50-28 but could never convert inside shots so ECU cruised. The Aggies made an attempt at a rally with about 7 minutes to go with Clinton Green at the helm. They narrowed the deficit to 8 but that was as close as it would get as ECU went on for a 67-55 victory.

Senior ECU SG Luke MacKay led all scorers with 20 in only 14 minutes, while Erroyl Bing notched player of the game honors for his line of 12 pts and 21 rebounds. Most stats for the Aggies were not good, though Sean Booker did show something with 10 pts 8 rebounds and 2 ast. Steven Koger had a horrible day shooting 3-13 and ending with 7 pts.

Monday, December 15, 2003
Today the North Carolina A&T Aggies head north into Richmond, VA to face the VCU Rams. Earlier this year VCU knocked off fellow MEACer Hampton. VCU is not very big but likes to put up lots of points with solid passing and open mid-range shots. The 3 is not a big weapon in their arsenal so if A&T can control their 3-point shooting they can stay in the game long enough to make a run. This will be their first full game without senior center Chris Ferguson, who broke his leg last week against East Carolina. Instead of going with the going with the larger "true" center Abraham Traore, coach Jerry Eaves will slide Jeff Alvis into the 5 spot while Greg Roberts will make his first start of the season at PF.

Rams Romp Aggies In Richmond

December 15, 2003: Richmond, VA
The Aggies struggled in their first full game without Chris Ferguson, but not all can be chalked up to the big man's absence. The Aggies came out with vigor and looked good in the opening minutes. At one point they built up a 21-14 lead over the Rams. But all that would change when Julian Capel drove the lane and slammed down a two-handed jam that ignited the crowd. It seemed like A&T could never recover. VCU went on a 7-0 run from there to even the score. The Aggies recovered somewhat to slow the Ram attack, but a few free throws before the half put VCU ahead 31-30 at the break. Uncharacteristically, Domonic Jones put up 14 points before the half, and he wasn't done yet.

The second half picked up right where the first left off. VCU continued to go on an 8-0 run. A&T managed to slim it down to 2 with a 3-pointer from Clinton Green and another from Faulcon. But then again, one play seemed to change the entire momentum of the game. Just when the Aggies had built up some steam, Sean Booker was on a breakaway layup and Derrick Reid chased him down and swatted the ball into the crowd. The crowd erupted and A&T was never the same. What sealed the fate of the Aggies was the play of Domonic Jones. After putting up 14 points in the first half, Jones continued his stellar play, hitting nearly everything it seemed. He finished with 31, and the VCU Rams walked away with a 68-55 victory.

The Aggies shot only 36% from the field, making this the second straight game they've shot under 40%. Ferguson's absense was apparented due to VCU grabbing 20 offensive rebounds opposed to A&T's 11. Greg Roberts was 1 rebound shy of a double-double with 10 pts and 9 rebounds.

The Aggies head down south to sunny Miami, FL to take on the undefeated Hurricanes. Darius Rice, cousin of NFL legend Jerry Rice, has carried the Hurricanes through their first 6 games to the tune of 23 ppg. If the Aggies hope to hang on in this one, they will have to find some way to slow down his production. The Hurricanes are much bigger than the Aggies, so their 3-point shooting will have to be on point in order for them to keep this one from getting out of hand early.

Faulcon soars... can't lift Aggies

December 22, 2003: Miami, FL:
By looking at the final score of Monday's affair with Miami, one wouldn't think the Aggies had much to smile about. But a closer look reveals that it was definately one of the Aggies best performances in recent weeks. The Aggies came out red-hot, hitting 11 of their first 18 shots. The Hurricanes, however, stayed right there with them. The Aggies kept pace deep into the first half, tied 21-21 at one point. The one thing that spelled the Aggies defeat was the lack of height. The Hurricanes outrebounded A&T 25-14 in the first half and went into the locker room up 47-38.

Brian Faulcon had a day to remember Monday. After the first was up Faulcon already had 17 points including 3-6 from long range. The Aggies had gone into the break shooting a blazing 49%. The Aggies eventually cooled off, however, the Hurricanes didn't, they got hotter. The Hurricanes blew away the Aggies in the second half converting 19 of 34 field goals. Brian Faulcon did all he could to save the Aggies and finished with a valiant 30 points (4-12 from the arc). The Hurricanes were just too much and finished shooting 52% from the field and outrebounded the Aggies 52-29 en route to a 88-73 victory.

Darius Rice was in foul trouble the whole game and finished with only 2 points in 10 minutes. The Canes found their scoring niche elsewhere with 5 players in double-figures. Gary Hamilton snagged player-of-the-game honors for his 13 point 22 rebound day. Jeff Alvis struggled mightly against the much bigger Hurricane frontcourt, he finished with 2 points and 2 rebounds.

Faulcon gives encore as Aggies barely stop skid

December 27th, 2003: High Point, NC
Saturday, the Aggies travelled 15 miles south of Greensboro to face cross-county rival, High Point. Both teams were in the middle of losing streaks and were looking to break their misfortunes. The first half, appropriately, was one of streaks. The Panthers started out on a 7-0 run. This was followed shortly by a 12-0 A&T streak. Again another 7-0 run from High Point, to make it 20-13, High Point favor. With about 2 minutes to go in the half, Faulcon caught fire and led the Aggies on an 11-0 run to head into the locker room with a 33-28 lead. Faulcon had 14 of those 33.

The 2nd half saw the Aggies build up a steady lead in the first 5 minutes. With 11 to go they had increased it to 15 behind the sharp shooting of Brian Faulcon. Slowly but surely the Panthers chipped away at the lead and all of a sudden with 2 minutes to go in the game, High Point's Joe Knight hit a 20 foot jumper to make it 60-55 A&T. After a layup by Traore, Knight came down and buried a 3 as Koger fouled him, and he completely the 4-point play at the line. 62-59 Aggies. After Koger hit 2 free throws on the other end, Knight trotted downcourt and knocked down his 5th three of the night to make it 64-62 Aggies with 38 seconds left. After two more made free throws, Knight strolled down and connected on ANOTHER 3-pointer, his 6th, to make it 66-65 with 7 seconds. The Panthers fouled Koger, but he missed both free throws, fortunately Alvis came down with the rebound, the most important of his 19 and the Aggies walked away with a victory.

Brian Faulcon followed up his 30 point effort against Miami with a 28 point showing Saturday. Koger was hampered by fouls the entire game and ended with 9. Perhaps the biggest surprise was Rechodd Carter who ended with 6 pts in 8 minutes. He had only had 2 pts in 11 minutes in the previous 6 games combined.

Aggies open conference schedule with win

January 3, 2004: Norfolk, VA
The Aggies and Spartans put on a shooting clinic Saturday afternoon, connecting on nearly 50% of their combined shot attempts. At first it looked as if Norfolk would be too much for A&T to handle, as they got off to an early lead and A&T made turnover after turnover. But midway through the first half the Aggies collectively caught fire. They went on a 13-0 run to end the first half and earn them a 46-33 lead going into the half. They shot an atonishing 62% from the field in the first half!

The second half picked up where they had left off and the Aggies kept making their shots. "We always knew we had talented shooters on this team, it was just a matter of shot selection" said head coach Jerry Eaves after the game. The Aggies seemed to be in rhythm all day long and ended up shooting 54%. The key seemed to be passing, as A&T notched a season high 22 assists. The Aggies also got help from their role-players with 40 points off the bench. The whole 2nd half it wasn't really close. NSU whittled away the lead to 8 but it was too little too late. A&T hung on for a 94-80 victory.

Brian Faulcon had 21 pts and senior Abraham Traore had a season high 10 pts and 11 boards. On Norfolk's side, Chakowby Hicks earned player of the game honors for 22 pts and 8 steals. Derrick Smith added 19 points. Norfolk State will travel to face South Carolina State next and A&T continues their road trip against Hampton.

Recruiting Rundown

January 9th, 2004
The first recruits signed verbal commitments this weekend. This year's recruiting class seems to be deep with guard talent, but only 2 center's in the top 30. McDonald's All-American and the number 1 ranked recruit in the nation Preston Boykin, a 6'1 poing guard from Plano, Texas, gave his verbal Friday to prennial power Duke. Also the #2 ranked recruit, Justin Webber, 6'8 power forward from Syracuse, NY gave his commitment to the hometown Syracuse Orangemen. Rounding out the action in the Top 20 was the #4 recruit in the nation, Mack Wilkins, a 6'1 point guard from Olean, NY, who verballed to UConn. Here are other notable verbals:

48) Charles Ross, 6'5 PG, Staten Island, NY --- Alabama

Tuesday, January 20, 2004
A&T started off the MEAC conference schedule with a bang, handling Norfolk State on the road. Since then they have dropped 4 straight and hope to get back on track Tuesday against Morgan State. The Bears like to move the ball around and get everyone involved, they have 4 players averaging double figures points this season. Chris Ferguson is doubtful for this game, but hopes to be back this weekend against Florida A&M. Traore will get the start in his absence.
