2007 Season Preview
April 3rd, 2007
Detroit, MI- After last year’s magical run to the World Series, expectations are high for the 2007 Detroit Tigers. With the return of their core group of players, along with the addition of Gary Sheffield, the Tigers are one of the favorites to win the World Series this season.
“It’s definitely a new feeling,” said starting pitcher Mike Maroth, “I’ve been with the team since 2002 and we have never even been picked to sniff the playoffs, let alone win the World Series.”
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/detroit/Image3.jpg
Mike Maroth was having his best season ever last year before he ended up on the DL.
Maroth, who was on the disabled list for most of last season, will fill the fifth slot of Detroit’s starting rotation. Headlined by youngsters Jeremy Bonderman and Justin Verlander, the starting rotation will be one of the strongest in the American League.
“Bondo and Verlander are two of the most talented pitchers I’ve never played with,” said veteran starting pitcher, Kenny Rogers. “Their stuff is electric and they’re going to be good for many years to come. Then we got two guys in Nate Robertson and Mike Maroth who are entering their prime and should have some career years coming up.”
The Tigers most exciting pitcher won’t be found in the starting rotation though, as flamethrower Joel Zumaya will spend another season in the bullpen.
“Being able to call the bullpen and have Joel Zumaya available for those high pressured outs is something every manager wishes he had,” said Detroit manager Jim Leyland. “We talked about putting him into the starting rotation over the winter, but those talks didn’t last long as it was clear that Zumaya is most valuable to us as a relief pitcher.”
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/detroit/Image4.jpg
With his 101 MPH fastball, the only thing that can slow down Joel Zumaya is the guitar solo from Freebird on Guitar Hero II.
Even with Zumaya, the Tigers bullpen is the biggest question mark on the team. Todd Jones, who is known to torture fans with his pitch to contact mentality, is still Detroit’s closer and the Tigers will only be carrying one left-handed pitcher in the bullpen, Wilfredo Ledezma, now last year‘s lefty specialist, Jamie Walker, is with the Baltimore Orioles. Another question mark is Fernando Rodney, he started out last season like an all-star, but started to fade towards the middle of the year. If Rodney can pitch like he did early on last season, the bullpen should be alright.
Expect to see a much improved offense when the Tigers take the field this season. Having Sean Casey for the whole year and the addition of Gary Sheffield will go a long way helping the Tigers score runs. Sheffield will give the Tigers a big-time threat in the middle of their lineup and the coaching staff hopes that his ability to work the count for a walk will rub off on some of the free-swinging Tigers.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/detroit/Image2.jpg
Gary Sheffield is only 45 homeruns away from joining the exclusive 500 club and he plans on getting there in a Tiger uniform.
“The Tigers brought me here to help them win games, and that’s what I expect to do,” said Sheffield. “All of my career I’ve been one of the best hitters in the game and I see no reason why things will be different this season. I‘m going to help this team make the next step and win a World Series.”
Before the Tigers can win the World Series, they’re going to have to survive the AL Central where the only thing that is certain is a last place finish from the Kansas City Royals. Other than the Royals, every team has a shot at the division this year. The Chicago White Sox have a lineup that can hit with the best of them, the only question is if their pitching staff will struggle like they did last year, or if they’ll be the dominating force that they were when they won the World Series in 2005. The Minnesota Twins, who finished first in the AL Central last year, got worse over the off-season, but that seems the be the case every year and yet the still manage to finish towards the top of the division. Then there’s the Cleveland Indians. Last year was suppose to be their breakout year, but injuries and a lackluster bullpen took away any chance of them winning the division. If the Indians can stay healthy and get a half-way respectable performance from their bullpen, expect them to be the Tigers biggest road block in taking the AL Central and returning to the playoffs in 2007.

Rogers, Tigers Win Home Opener
April 4th, 2007
Detroit, MI- Kenny Rogers picked up where he left off in the playoffs last year, as he dominated the Kansas City Royals and picked up the opening day win for the Detroit Tigers.
“It’s always good to get that first win out of the way,” said Rogers. “To do it on opening day in front of all of our fans, it doesn’t really get much better than that.”
Rogers got off to a shaky start, giving up 2 hits in the first inning. With a man on first and third, Reggie Sanders grounded into a routine double play to get Rogers out of the inning, but unfortunately Mike Sweeney would be injured on the play while sliding into 2nd base.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/detroit/Image5.jpg
Mike Sweeney is one of Kansas City's most dangerous hitters and he will be missed if his injury causes him to miss an extended amount of time.
“Mike is such a great player and you hate to see something like that happen, especially on opening day,” said Buddy Bell, Kansas City’s manager. “He’s had a great career in Kansas City, but the last couple of years he’s been hampered with injuries. Hopefully he can heal quickly and get back into the lineup.”
Gil Meche, who signed with the Royals this winter after spending last season with the Mariners, got the start for Kansas City and looked good until the 4th inning when he walked Craig Monroe with the bases loaded to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. One batter later, Sean Casey would increase Detroit’s lead to 5 with a grand slam to right field.
“I was out there looking for a fastball inside and that’s exactly what I got,” Casey said. “Sometimes you just get lucky.”
Luke Hudson would relieve Meche after the grand slam, but one inning later Hudson found himself in some trouble of his own. With a man on first and third and no outs, Gary Sheffield hit a ball to the warning track to score Ivan Rodriguez from 3rd making the score 6-0, Tigers.
Two innings later, Sheffield was at it again, hitting a single up the middle that scored a sprinting Rodriguez from second. One batter later, Craig Monroe would follow suit and single up the middle, driving in the Tigers final run and making the score 8-0.
The Royals got their only run in the 9th, where they were able to take advantage of an out-of-sync Joel Zumaya.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/detroit/Image6.jpg
Usually reliable Joel Zumaya had trouble getting hitters out today and surrendered the Royals only run.
“He just didn’t have his best stuff out there today,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. “it’s the first game of the season and I don’t expect every player on this team to be in mid-season form. Now if in 3 weeks, he’s still having a hard time pitching effectively, then maybe I’ll be worried, but as of right now I’m just happy about the win and look forward to the next 161 games.”

Tigers Get Easy Win Over Twins
April 12th, 2007
Minneapolis, MN- Picked by many to be a front-runner for the Cy Young, Jeremy Bonderman showed why he has everybody drooling over his stuff.
Bonderman pitched 6 strong innings in a 5-0 win over the Minnesota Twins, striking out 8 and allowing only 2 hits.

Jeremy Bonderman lowered his ERA to 4.36 today after struggling in his previous start against the Kansas City Royals.
“If he pitches like that for the rest of the season, I‘ll be a happy man,” said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. “Ever since he’s been in the league he’s shown flashes of excellence, but the problem for him has been consistency. If he can start to string performances like that together, the rest of the AL better watch out.”
Last year’s rookie phenomn, Francisco Liriano, got the start for the Twins and looked bad from the get-go.
“I didn’t have my best stuff out there today,” said Liriano. “I can’t expect to take the mound with less than my best stuff and beat a team like the Tigers, I just can’t.”
Gary Sheffield opened up the scoring in the first inning when he singled with bases loaded and scored Placido Polanco. One batter later, Sean Casey doubled off of the left-field wall drving in Carlos Guillen and Magglio Ordonez.

Placido Polanco was the offensive star for the Tigers, picking up 3 hits, including a home run, and scoring 2 runs.
In the next inning, Polanco hit his first home run of the season to give the Tigers a 4-0 second inning lead.
Detroit was at it again in the 3rd inning, when Sheffield got his second hit of the day, allowing Guillen to score his second run of the day.
The Tigers wouldn’t score again as Scott Baker, who came into the game for Liriano in the 5th, shut down the Tigers offense for the remainder of the game.
