Astros pick up 6'5" southpaw with first pick
Houston, TX -- The Houston Astros picked up one of the top pitchers in the first round of Wednesday's draft when they selected 6'5" lefty Clifton Greathouse. The 18 year-old Greathouse just graduated from Camden County High School in St. Marys, GA this past spring. Baseball America had Greathouse ranked as the number 1 player coming out of high school in this years draft. Astros manager Phil Garner thought very highly of Greathouse before the draft. "He was the top player we wanted to get. He's one of the best young pitchers I've ever seen" Garner said.
It appears that Greathouse will skip his college career and take his chance at pro baseball. Greathouse was committed to play at Clemson University if he was not satisfied by his draft position. "I would've loved to play at Clemson, but I think I have to take this opportunity the Astros have given me" Greathouse said. Greathouse had an outstanding career at Camden County High School. He helped lead the Wildcats to a Georgia AAAAA State Championship, going 12-0 in his final year. During his four year high school career, he threw 5 no-hitters and won a total of 51 games. Between now and spring training next March, he will play with the Greeneville Astros, Houston's rookie affiliate.

Rookie Greathouse will train with Astros big club
Houston, TX -- It is not very often that a rookie go to Spring Training with an organization's MLB level club. Clifton Greathouse will do just that when the Astros' pitchers and catchers report to Kissimmee, FL later this month. After an outstanding fall with the Greeneville Astros, Houston feels that the 19 year-old can contribute in the spring. "Clifton will be part of our spring rotation. He'll get some starts under his belt, and depending on his performance we'll place him where we see fit" Astros manager Phil Garner said in January.

Braves rattle Greathouse
Kissimmee, FL -- The Atlanta Braves, Astros pitcher Clifton Greathouse's favorite team growing up, were too much for the rookie pitcher to overcome, as the Braves rocked Houston 6-3. Greathouse had his longest, and worst outing of the spring, going 4 innings and giving up 5 runs on 8 hits. He was able to strike out 3 Atlanta batters. Greathouse kept the Braves off the board though the first two innings, but gave up 2 in the third, and 3 in the fourth as the wheels started to fall off the wagon for the 'Stros.

Jupiter, FL -- Clifton Greathouse had by far his worst outing of the spring Monday against the Florida Marlins. The Fish lit up the 19 year-old rookie in his 2.2 innings of work, scoring 5 runs on 5 hits. Reggie Abercrombie and Miguel Olivo both doubled of off Greathouse. The Astros built a 4-0 advantage in the top of the first, only to see their lead slip away in the 11-5 loss. Greathouse's ERA jumped to 8.53 for the spring, and his record now sits at 1-2.

Keep working college!
Im keeping an eye on this because I'm doing a RttS with a starter in the Fish organization.
Through 2 years he's established himself as a back of the rotation guy in AAA and even got a 2008 callup (One game, then was returned).

6 Appearances, i think it was something around 20-24 innings..and an ERA around 6.
As a matter of fact..I just got recalled on 5/26/09. AAA Record of 3-1, 7 starts (1 relief), and an ERA of 2.91 at the time.
One of the things Im trying to do with my guy is build him after the season. So Ill only use my training points every month to send 100 points to certain catorgies.. Pitching Coach meeting, the one that does Endurance/Stamina, and my pitch control training, in order to make sure those dont decrease over the season.

I'm kinda doing the same thing by not using the points much during the season. I don't want my fastball to jump 3 or 4 mph over the course of the season. I've been using them on the stretching category, which just prevents injuries.
So it looks like it is difficult to stay in the bigs the first few seasons. I'm glad to see that, though I hope it's not too hard. It takes most, even very talented rookies, 2-4 years before they are consistently playing at the MLB level. What kind of contract do you have?

Greathouse rebounds after rough start
Kissimmee, FL -- Clifton Greathouse recorded his longest outing of the spring Sunday afternoon against the New York Mets, going 4.1 innings. Greathouse's day got off to a rough start in the first inning, as Mets slugger Carlos Beltran knocked one out of the park for a 3 run homer. From that point on, Greathouse was able to settle down and find his zone. He did not allow another Mets run while on the mound. He also recorded 3 K's and no base on balls in the no decision. The Mets went on to win the game 6-4 in 10 innings. Greathouse is scheduled to make one more start this spring against the Kansas City Royals.

Just to let you know.. im currently simming my guy's stuff. I dont have the MC space to save this, I didnt realize it when I started.
My guy is currently a B overall. I think hes B everything but fielding. Thats overall, velocity, control, stamina.... plus fielding the F and potential of A.
I think the stretching is what im using too.. If you do the control training for your pitches, it'll cover the velocity and movement as 'stablized' but wont add anything to them.
Staying in the bigs is hard.,..although my guy is improving. Going into 2010 hes the ace of the AAA staff. 09 he went 10-1 with a 2.91 ERA in 101 innings in AAA. Called up twice.. 7 appearances, 4 starts... ERA of 7. Both times I was sent down within a week or two weeks of being called up.
My contract is the 2nd year of a 2 year, 500K deal...so Im making 250K this season and am a FA after it.

Greathouse's last chance to impress
Houston, TX -- Astros' rookie pitcher Clifton Greathouse can at least say he pitched one game in Houston's Minute Maid Park this season. The Astros returned home to Houston to wrap-up their spring with two games against the Kansas City Royals. Greathouse made his sixth and final start of the spring. He had his, what has become normal, ups and downs. He gave up 1 run in both the first and second innings, as the Royals knocked the ball around the ballpark. He also gave up a solo home run to Emil Brown. Greathouse shut the Kansas City offense down in his remaining 2.1 innings. He finished the night with a no decision, recording 2 K's and 1 walk. The Astros won the game 6-4.

Greathouse has up and down spring
Houston, TX -- Houston Astros' rookie Clifton Greathouse did not have the best spring ever, but he also did not have the worst. If Greathouse shown anything to the Astros coaching staff this spring, it was he will give up runs early. In his six starts, the longest of which only went 4.1 innings, Greathouse allowed a total of 18 runs, giving up more than 1 run in five of starts. "He's young and needs some time in the minors. This is all still very new to him. He has to get use to not being able to make a mistake to any hitter, one through nine" Houston manager Phil Garner said. More than likely, Greathouse will begin his rookie season at AA Corpus Christi.

Thanks. But do you mind sending me some of that big contract you signed. I'm going to have a hard timing eating off of $30,000 a year. [down]
Also something I though was very cool, was that we played our last 2 spring games back in Houston, just like MLB teams do. They really nailed alot of small things in this game.

I was wondering about that. After 2010 I turned down afew contract offers to goto Spring Training with the Stros..earned a 650K contract and a job as the #4 stater. (The only time you goto ST is without a contract, BTW)
I tested that and tried pitching the final Spring game of the season.. they had me play at some ST stadium in Florida.. so maybe it resets itself after the first year or something..but its cool that you got it.

That was a tough game. Greathouse seems like it could be a Native American name or something. Good luck with getting that ERA back down.

They were games in 2 different series. We played a series at Wichita, and then we played a series with somebody else (in which I didn't appear), and then we played Wichita in a home series.
My next post won't be so good. Frisco rocked my ass.
Oh. For some raeson I thought they were back to back games. Im a mo-ron.

Tough last outing, but you'll bounce back.
I've hardly been playing my RttS, because I've been so into my Braves 'chise.

Frisco rocks Greathouse again
Corpus Christi, TX -- A day after appearing against Midland in a relief role, Clifton Greathouse took the mound against the Frisco RoughRiders as the starter for the Corpus Christi Hooks. Back on the 22nd, the Riders ran Greathouse off the mound after scoring 11 runs in just 3 innings. Greathouse's outing was not as bad tonight as it was on that afternoon, but it was still a rough 3 innings once again. This time, the Riders pounded out 3 runs on 9 hits. Greathouse was strapped with his second loss of the season in the 13-4 loss to Frisco.

Greathouse gets back on track
Midland, TX -- Corpus Christi Hooks' pitcher Clifton Greathouse may have finally broken his slump tonight against the Midland RockHounds. The Hooks had lost 7 straight games in which Greathouse had appeared in, dating back to March 22. The streak ended with the Hooks' 4-1 win tonight over Midland. Greathouse went 3.0 innings, giving up just 2 hits and 1 run. He also struck out 3 Midland batters. Greathouse improved his record to 3-2 and got his ERA under 7.00 for the first time since March 17. The win also snapped a 6 game losing streak for Corpus Christi.

Good Goat Greathouse is a workhorse.
You worked 3 innings and got a win? Was it a relief appearance?

No, that was a start. I don't know why I keep getting pulled so early. I did pitch for like week straight though. I keep getting brought in for relief and still keep getting my scheduled starts too. I'm listed as the ace on the AA staff. The guy that was our #1 got moved up to AAA. The team itself really took a nose dive.

I think thats kind of a gay thing then that you can get a win after 3 innings.
Im fairly sure the 5 inning rule is still in effect in the minors.

We used like 8 or 9 pitchers in the game.

I don't think Gordon is in the game, or at least I haven't seen him.

Gordon cant be on the game. He hasn't appeared on a 25 man roster and thus is not part of the MLBPA.

We used like 8 or 9 pitchers in the game.
Then whoever finished the 5th inning or later and had the lead should have been the winning pitcher.
Nobody ever gets a win after throwing the first 3 innings, unless its an All-Star game.

Yea. I know that in order to be in the game, you had to have been on a MLB roster.

Looks like Gordon will make it into the game when the season starts:
