Best-of-7 game format like baseball (and basketball and hockey I suppose). All games are 5*, 15 minute halves with silver goal extra time (if needed).

All 62 national teams that are in my WE8 will compete. I'll be playing as 6 of them (USA, Norway, Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Georgia, and Surinam*).

*Surinam is made up of all players who are "Dutch" in the game but were actually born in Surinam and could have played for Surinam in real life if they hadn't moved to Europe (since Surinam doesn't allow for dual citizenship). There is actually quite a bit of them.

The draw for the first round was rough on me for Norway, Cote d'Ivoire, and Georgia. Not too bad for USA, Mali, or Surinam.

Will have reports from the first round soon. Second round has started, as you can see I advanced with 4 teams. My 2nd round matchups are Cote d'Ivoire vs Paraguay, Mali vs Argentina, Georgia vs Hungary, and Surinam vs Italy.

Serbians Oust Americans in Battle of Road Warriors
Round 1- In a most peculiar series, where the visiting team won every match, Serbia & Montenegro ousted the United States from the World Series of Soccer (WSS). The tight series that went to game seven turned out to favor the team without home field "advantage" when Serbia & Montenegro won the series despite losing every game played in Belgrade. The first half of Game 1 indicated that it would be a short and sweet series for the United States. Landon Donovan struck twice and a few other Americans missed a couple of chances in a half absolutely dominated by the home side. But instead of closing out the game in the 2nd half, the series took a turn that it would never recover from, as Serbia & Montenegro reeled off 3 unanswered goals to steal game 1 from the Americans.

Game two picked up where the previous game left off, Serbia scoring early and often, jumping off to a 3-0 lead in Washington, 6 consecutive goals in just 2 halves. But just as the series tilted from American dominance to Serbian dominance, the United States came alive and scored two unanswered goals in the 2nd half to make it competative. It wasn't enough to win the game, but it was enough to rejuvenate American hopes. The duo of 2-3 defeats at home was washed away with a successful roadtrip to Belgrade where the Americans stole Game 3 in overtime with Donovan's 3rd goal of the series. Game 4 was a heated afair, and again went into overtime after Donovan netted his 4th goal in as many games. Mastoroeni was the hero this time, nabbing another overtime goal to crush the Serbians and regain home field advantage for the Americans, heading home with the series tied at 2-2 and 2 home games remaining (if needed).

But the Western Hemisphere proved to be more hospitable than hostile to the Serbs who, despite being outplayed in the first half, stuck around and netted a brace of goals to win by the largest margin in the series, 2-0. Mastoroeni went from hero to goat after he scored the opening goal for Serbia & Montenegro in his own net. Serbia went home to close out the series, but the United States matched the Eastern European's 3 road wins with a third of their own. Donovan struck twice to see that the Serbians would be coming back home with the Americans for a seventh game.

Up to this point the road team was 6-0 in the series, and this did not bode well for the United States. However, they had proven to be a better team overall in the series and expected to move on. A couple of early chances were wasted and it was still 0-0 at half time. Just as it looked like the game was going into overtime (where the USA was 2-0 in OT games), Ibac stunned the local crowd with the eventual series winning goal, and the only one of the game. Serbia took the game 1-0 and the series 4-3. In the end the road team went 7-0, outscoring the home team 14-6 in the series. Realistically Serbia only outscored the USA 11-9 though, and had just one more win, 4-3, though two of the United States' wins came in Overtime. Donovan, despite being on the losing end, ended up with the most goals: 6 in 7 games. Serbia & Montenegro advance to face Spain, who topped Latvia in 5 games with 3 wins, 1 draw (a win on PKs), and 1 loss.

Replay of World Cup Semifinal Produces Same Result
Round 1 - In the last Winning Eleven World Cup, Norway and France collided in the semifinals, a battle which ultimately ended up as the 2nd place game, with Norway easily beating Costa Rica for third place, and France being demolished 3-0 in the final by Georgia to take second. Norway had lost 1-0 in the narrow nail-biter and argued afterwards that France was “lucky” that Trezeguet snuck the goal past Myhre in the final minutes to steal the win while so many of Norway’s own attempts had just narrowly missed throughout the game. Well, with the World Series of Soccer the Norwegians would have a chance to show whether their loss was a fluke or not… and they wouldn’t have to wait long, because they drew France right away, in the opening round. “Obviously we’re not pleased with the draw at all, you have teams like Scotland and Hungary playing each other, but then you have two semifinalists playing, there should have been some kind of seeding” exclaimed the Norwegian coach. But the draw was done, and the matches were set. This was clearly going to be the biggest series in the entire first round, bar none, and it somewhat lived up to the hype.

While Norway weren’t particularly fond of the opponent they drew, they weren’t too disappointed to receive homefield advantage for their first series. The Norwegians wanted to take full advantage of home field too, and boy did they start the campaign on a bright note. On the opening kickoff the ball was lofted down the left flank where Solskjaer ran onto it and put a low volley into the box. Without hesitating, John Carew got right in the path of the ball and redirected it, with force, right into the French goal. 1-0 to Norway, just 40 some seconds into the series. The whole stadium was rocking as French fans took a ribbing. Many of the viking faithful were expecting, or at least hoping, for a shower of goals to absolutely bury the French to make their point, but France must have realized this wasn’t going to be easy at all, they were in a full fledged heavy-weight bout, and they needed to start throwing some punches back before they got knocked out. And they did. Just before halftime, to take all the wind out of the Norwegian sails, Trezeguet struck for France, 1-1 heading into the break. The second half was a slugfest as both teams played outrageous defense and both keepers did everything possible to keep their teams level. Finally, again with under 15 minutes left in the game, it was Trezeguet once more to put it into the Norwegian net, and again, Solskjaer and company had a couple chances to respond, but couldn’t find the equalizer. Another loss, almost identical to the semifinals, Norway were absolutely disheartened, but it was only game 1.

In the second game, Norway “came out with fire in their eyes” as a French reporter described it. Again, the Norwegians struck first, this time Torre Andre Flo used his brilliant dribbling skills to round the French defense and slot it past the keeper. Norway had also had one game plan when going after France, and that was to make sure Henry couldn’t get the ball. They figured that if Henry was neutralized, they would stand a chance. Well, again, Lundekvam was amazing on defense and denied Henry any good chances to score, but again, like the past two games, it wasn’t Henry who delived the blow, it was Trezeguet, scoring his third goal of the series, and 4th goal in 3 games against Norway (counting the semifinal). This time France couldn’t find the winner though, as Norway began to realize that “hey, it might be a good idea to guard this guy too” and began to stifle Trezeguet for the rest of the series. The game went into overtime and home field advantage began to kick in as the home fans continued to chant for their side, giving them energy to keep pushing forward. Iversen nearly won it when his shot hit the crossbar, but Flo made sure the French weren’t going to steal another game, smashing the winner home a few minutes later. Time ran out in the half and Norway led 2-1, so they had won on Flo’s silver goal to level the series at 1. It was shaping up to be everything anyone had hoped for, but now the teams would travel to France to see if Norway could take one back.

Could they? In a word, no. The first game in Paris was an absolute disaster for Norway. Just like Norway had done at home, the French came out swinging in front of their loyal supporters and hit Norway hard with a pair of goals from unlikely heros Pires and Wiltord. The Norwegians fought to pull one back with a goal from Carew, but Henry had a response to keep France up by 2. Zidane, who had been extremely quiet in Oslo, picked out a spot in the back of the net to put the ball in and at 4-1, the game was essentially over. Flo picked up his third goal in as many games to cut it back to 4-2, but then Henry added his second of the match to kill any hopes of a comeback and secure France’s victory, putting them back ahead in the series, 2-1. Game 4 was more competitive, but produced the same result. France rested Trezeguet, which worked to their advantage as perhaps the Norwegian defense took the substitute lightly. But Saha was every bit as dangerous as the man he replaced, and he made Norway pay for taking it easy on him by putting two past them during the match. Solskjaer had a response for each goal with his first goals of the series, but with the game in Paris, you knew there was bound to be a hero for the homeside, and it was none other than Zidane who struck the final blow to make it 3-2 to France for the game, and 3-1 in the series.

Heading back to Oslo, the Norwegians were determined to turn it around. France only had 1 home game left, so all Norway had to do was win their home games and steal that road game from France to move on. It looked like there wouldn’t even be another trip to Paris though, as Henry struck first to put the French ahead after only 20 minutes. Andresen, who saw limited playing time in the series, earned his keep by striking home his first and only goal of the series to level the game though. And just as the home side had found a hero in Paris, there was one to be found in Oslo as well. Ole Gunnar Solskaer knocked in his third goal of the series to win the game, 2-1 for Norway, making it a series again, with France leading only 3-2.

This meant France had to win in Paris, or they’d be going back to Norway for game 7. The gloves had come off and both teams had gone after each other from the opening kickoff in game 1, but with so much at stake, it went back to semifinal form where both sides were more concerned with defense rather than offense. Each side was at full strength, and just like the final rounds of a heavy weight fight, both sides were tired and neither wanted to expose themselves for the knockout blow. About ten minutes into the second half France finally broke through, and it was Trezeguet, who became the series’ top goal scorer with his fourth goal to put France in front. But surely 1 goal wouldn’t be enough, neither side had been shut out in the previous 5 games, so France would need another goal to make sure, right? Well, it turned out, they didn’t. Just like the semifinal, Norway saw chance after chance miss the goal, or hit the crossbar, or just get gobbled up by the keeper. Thirty minutes became twenty, then ten… then five. Time was going too fast and Norway could not find a goal. France, former World Cup champions, were actually bunkering to protect their one goal lead from the Norwegians. A final shot came flying in from Johnsen that missed and the ref said that was enough, it was all she wrote for the Norwegians who bow out of the WSS in the first round with a tough, hard fought loss to France. Five of the six games in the series were decided by a single goal, so while Norway might not have proved that the semifinal loss was a fluke, they did prove that it could have easily been them in the final instead of France, as the two teams truly were well matched. But Norway is out, and the French will move on to face Australia in the second round. The Aussies took care of Ecuador in the first round, also winning in 6 games they were led by Agostino who had 4 goals.

Portugal Swept in Africa
Round 1 - One of the more intriguing series in the first round was the matchup of Cote d’Ivoire against Portugal. Two good teams with a lot of superstars figured to be a long drawn out series with a lot of close, good games. But unlike Norway-France, this one didn’t live up to the hype at all. It was all Cote d’Ivoire from the get go. In the opening game, the Elephants made it clear to Portugal that they weren’t intimidated by the European powers and smashed 4 goals past the Portuguese, with Bakayoko opening the scoring and then Drogba netting a hattrick. Even more impressive was the defense who didn’t allow the potent Portuguese attack to even get a sniff of the goal.

In the second game it looked like maybe we had a series on our hands as, although Cote d’Ivoire ran up to a 2-0 lead early behind goals from Bakayoko and Kone, Portugal finally got on the board with a goal from Deco. Cote d’Ivoire’s offense had shut off after the opening two goals, so if Portugal could find an equalizer they could have a chance to win, but the next goal didn’t come until the third game, so Cote d’Ivoire went to Portugal to defend their 2 game lead in the series. In Portugal it was more of the same. Pauleta managed a goal for Portugal, but Drogba was just too good for the Portuguese defense and he added 2 more goals himself. Central defender Kolo Toure knocked in one as well and it was another huge win for the Africans, taking it to 3-0 in the series after the 3-1 win in Lisbon.

The final game was anti-climatic as Cote d’Ivoire seemed to sleepwalk through the match. Dindane got his first goal to end the snoozefest with a 1-0 victory, sending Portugal out of the tournament and moving on to the second round with ease, a 4-0 sweep in the series. Up next for the Ivorians figures to be an even easier time for the Elephants, drawing Paraguay. However, it might be tougher than Cote d'Ivoire expect, as Paraguay also swept their first round opponents, Ukraine, and the South Americans will have home field advantage for that series.
