Republic of Georgia Joins WEFA - Will Attempt to Qualify for World Cup II
The Republic of Georgia have been accepted into WEFA and will be able to compete in the next World Cup after having missed out on the first one. Georgia is a small nation with a limited player pool, but they have met WEFA requirements and have been dubbed "competative" after narrowly losing to Latvia in an exibition match, 1-2.
Georgia actually doesn't even have subs, but were still able to convince WEFA to allow them to participate with the 11 men they do have, which happens to just be enough for the side to run a 3-4-3 formation.
Previously UEFA qualifying had been 8 groups of 4 with all top teams and some second place teams earning automatic qualification, with all other second place and third place teams going to the play-offs. In the last World Cup UEFA fielded 17 of the 32 sides in the field, over half. In order to keep qualifying simple, UEFA has convinced WEFA to allow the defending champions, France, to qualify automatically. With France out of qualifying, and Georgia in, then there won't need to be any changes made to the process other than there will be less second place teams qualifying and more playoff matches.
The draw has already come out and Georgia will face a tough task of even reaching the play-offs, let alone the World Cup, as they face Czech Republic, Austria, and Hungary in qualifying. Most are saying that reaching the play-offs would be considered a success for the tiny nation, but no one is really expecting the side to finish anywhere above 4th in the group of four teams.
Major Points:
*France qualify to next World Cup automatically as defending champions
*Georgia joins UEFA for qualifying

Changes in WEFA to usher in 'Better' World Cup
Before the second World Cup started, Georgia were thought to just be making up the list when they joined UEFA and attempted to qualify. However, after qualifying, and then the tournament, it was Georgie themselves as the last team standing. After hoisting the trophy, they booked their ticket to the third World Cup as champions.
There were other sides to step up after seeing Georgia's fairytale unfold. Four nations will participate in the World Cup for the first time in this upcoming tournament. Two from each Africa and North America as Ghana, Mali, Surinam, and Trinidad & Tobago have all entered squads. Honduras issued a statement that they were thinking about entering but declined, citing that they still needed time to organize themselves.
With the field expanded to 63 teams, WEFA scrapped the old qualifying format and implemented a new one. Now instead of groups of 3 or 4 around the world, it would be groups of 4 (UEFA & CONMEBOL), 5 (CAF), or 6 (AFC & CONCACAF). To make it harder, WEFA also mandated home & away fixtures instead of one-off games as previously done. This means teams will have anywhere from 6-10 games to qualify, as opposed to previously 3.
Play-offs also took a major hit. In the past tournaments, several teams came through the play-offs. This time around, just 1 play-off spot is available, for the #3 CONCACAF team vs #3 AFC team.
The World Cup itself has not changed, and will still see 32 nations reach the finals to play a single round robin group stage where they will hope to advance to the knockout round. Georgia is the only side of the 63 nations who do not have to participate in qualifying in order to play in the field of 32.
Major Points:
*Georgia qualify to next World Cup automatically as defending champions
*Ghana and Mali join CAF for qualifying
*Surinam and Trinidad & Tobago join CONCACAF for qualifying
*Qualifying will be double round robin now

Africa Revitalized by Ivorian Championship
The continent of Africa, the sleeping giant of world soccer, has perhaps been woken with Cote d'Ivoire's championship in the latest World Cup. A plethora of countries have went into the genealogical archives to find players with ancestry and the membership in CAF has now swelled to 16 members as Algeria, Angola, Congo DR, Guinea, Mozambique, and Togo have all put together squads to compete for the World Cup.
World Cup fever has not just been quarantined in Africa though. Across the Atlantic, Guadeloupe, the surprise semifinalists in the real life CONCACAF 2007 Gold Cup, has found enough WE players to put together a team of their own. They have gotten the "okay" from WEFA and will compete in CONCACAF for a bid to their first ever World Cup.
This is the second straight expansion of both CONCACAF and CAF as the two confederations added two nations each in the last World Cup (Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname, Ghana, and Mali). Guadeloupe's addition was not enough to increase CONCACAF's bids for the World Cup, which remained at 2.5, but the influx of African teams have given CAF more places, which were taken from UEFA.
With the most teams ever, this World Cup promises to be one of the best yet.
Major Points:
* Cote d'Ivoire qualify to World Cup IV as defending champions
* Seven new teams to compete in qualifying (6 in Africa, 1 in North America)
* Algeria, Angola, Congo DR, Guinea, Mozambique, and Togo join CAF
* Guadeloupe joins CONCACAF

In case anyone is actually interested in following this. I created a wiki for it.
http://www.msu.edu/~julsonma/WE8I.htm
In the "World Cup IV" section - it will be updated randomly (whenever I have time to).
I'll be playing as the usual culprits - Norway, USA, Georgia, and Cote d'Ivoire.
I was thinking about doing another African team like Mali or Congo DR but decided against it. I want to see how they do without me running the show. I also changed some of the rosters/formations for the teams who consistently suck, or just aren't doing as well as I'd like them to (China, Saudi Arabia, Ecuador, Cameroon, Egypt, Denmark, Sweden, Hungary, etc.) so we'll see if that produces some upsets or if it just makes them worse...
