AViD Dynasty Manager

This time it's more official. The dynasty manager that I have been working on for the last year is now at 3.0 and live:

Feel free to check it out. With a new version just being released, there may be some kinks to work out so please be patient and check out the attached forums for the dynasty manager. You can get help and report errors there.

And it's completely free. So don't act like you dropped $50 to use it if something goes wrong. :p Just drop by the forums and help us all out by reporting the problem and I'll fix it right quick.

AViD features a very full set of dynasty tracking tools:
All game stats including individual player stats and opponent player stats
Player recruiting, ratings and game stats as well as automatic season and career stats if your tracking individual game stats.
In-Season and Off-Season Recruiting Tracker
Complete Awards tracking
Preseason and final Top 25 polls
Team Statistics

THE Feature: Custom Output of game stats, rosters, schedules, awards,etc that are pre-formatted for posting on forums like Utopia!
Much, much more


There is always more to be done and this includes adding complete Bowl Game tracking for your dynasty. This feature is in the pipeline and should see the light of day within a week or 2. The feature request section of the AViD forums is a popular spot where AViD users continuously come up with great ideas for new dynasty tracking features that I will make every attempt to accomodate. Other future features include Depth Charts and complete possession-by-possession drive tracking.

If you missed that last bullet then you missed the motivating factor for creating AViD. I could have been happy enough using cmq's dynasty tracker but I was a dynasty report nut and I needed to get all those stats into my Utopia dynasty report. It needed to be easier and automated. Being the programmer I am I took it upon myself to develop a database backed website that I could enter all the stats in and then generate a Utopia ready stats report. Well the site does that and I'm working on an advanced tool that will allow AViD users to completely customize the custom views. Currently they allow minimal customizing but the future is bright for this feature. The advanced custom game view is a reality although completely udocumented which makes it a bit tough for you guys to use. That documentation is on its way.

If your an avid dynasty mode fan then this site if for you. If you find that AViD is a bit overwhelming then just remember that you should be able to track as little or as much as you want. Enter only the data you want and the site will still work for you. Everyday I am trying to improve the sites usability and one of those efforst includes providing user prefernce settings to change how AViD works for you. These user preferences will be added through out the coming weeks so that you can customize your AViD experience.

Uploading Rosters:
If you would like to upload a roster created in excel, eventually I'll ad an interface but for now you can PM me and I'll try to accomodate you with uploading it to your new dynasty. Remember that this may not be done immediately (ie in minutes or even hours) so be patient. You'll also need to use this format of the linked roster file. This file is a CSV or comma seperated values (Comma Delimited in excel) and your roster should be saved the same way. You should also use the exact same format as this roster if you want it to work. I won't trouble shoot rosters not done correctly at this stage. Right click and save as to download this file and then open in excel (probably need to select "view all" in the file open dialouge box). Then PM me here or in the AViD forums to help you upload it to a dynasty for 2007. :) If you do a good enough job I'll probably just use your file as a default for the game and AViD. Thanks. :D

Looks like you stumbled upon another issue as well. You did a created team right? Looks like it didn't enter the created team in the dynasty entry so the whole site was crashing. [oops] I'm an idiot. If you create the dynasty again you shouldn't need to create the team again because it's in the database now. Try it and make sure that works now.

As a longtime AViD user, let me congratulate Mandibal on one fine piece of work. It's been a boon to my dynasty reports and just a whole lot of fun to play around with, especially when you get a few years into the dynasty and have a lot of statistical history.

The 3.0 version (from what I've seen) takes a great formula and makes it even better. Even if you don't report your dynasty on Utopia or elsewhere, you'll enjoy the ability to review the history of your team in a unique and interesting way.

Couple more tips for new users (and maybe old ones as well):

If you want to set captains for a season it's under the Edit Season link for editing the dynasty.

And if you aren't going to use rosters and players stats you can always go to dynasty preferences link under dynasty edit and select "Player season stats only" and save. This will remove things like all the Individual Stat links for game editing and the Player stats boxes in the game page. Clean it up a bit if your going more simple. This is one of those custom preference settings I'm trying to add more of to the dynasty manager. :)


Side Note: My lifes work is complete now that even the infamous ECH has created a dynasty at AViD! [laugh] Welcome aboard buddy. :) Glad to have you.

Completely custom built by myself for the 2nd (or maybe third time).

First 2 versions I guess were both PHP/Mysql driven sites.

This one is.....Ruby on Rails. :) Decided to try it out and thought it had a lot of potential to really make AViD better in the long run so I rewrote it and so far it's been pretty good. I particularly like the unit testing built in so I can at least try to do more comprehensive testing.

Actually, in both cases (2.0 and 3.0) I've used stuff I develop for AViD later on at work. So right now I'm starting to move my work sites over to RoR from PHP.

It's pretty slick. But you know what's even nicer? Prototype, jQuery, Scriptaculous and the like. These friggen JS libraries are truly the shit. I was hacking together some rough JS for the last version to try to improve the UI but these libraries just kick so much ass at making these things drop dead simple that you can really create some nice interfaces for more modern browsers.

There are a couple things about posting all your stats on Utopia (or similar forums).

1) you type up a bunch of stats into a file (excel or directly into a text editor). These stats have some use in excel but none in a text editor once you've posted them. You can't sort them or find out usefull facts about the. Excel would provide you with some of this but don't let any one tell you excel is as good as having a customized application like AViD. :) So your typing up a bunch of information that may or may not have future use. That takes some time to start with.

2) You then have to present the stats in a readable, presentable way in a dynasty report. No one wants to try to read a jumbled mess of text posted on a forums. There are always problems trying to get things lined up and looking nice. It's entirely possible to do so but it takes even more time after you've already spent time typing up stats into excel or a text editor document.

Enter AViD. The only dynasty manager that provides an additional service to dynasty reporters who are posting to a forum software like Utopia: Custom Views. These custom views pull your stats and data from AViD and format them for you so that all you do is copy and paste into Utopia. There is even a chance to add some personal touches to the report like text formatting for the titles of the stats etc. AViD heps with all of this and then spits out a nice easy to work with report so that you can post it on Utopia. On top of that it does a whole lot more and will do more as things develop to show you historical trends in your dynasty data (which will be able to be posted on Utopia as well). Do me a favor and bear with me as well because I'd like to use you as a bit of a guinee pig. I've been working on some Help documentation and I'd like to see if it helps you get started. If not I will be more than happy to fill in the blanks.

First to answer your question, you'll enter stats in AViD and it will output the custom view for you and all you do is copy and paste. You don't have to do any more work after entering the data into the dynasty manager website.

In particular look at the DateEntryCheckList and the EditingADynasty pages. The Custom View pages will explain that part more and then there is an often confusing aspect for new users with New Seasons and Players leaving function. So check that out as well. One note that I have is that the page load time seems a little on the sluggish side; is this something you've noted as well and, if so, is it going to be addressed at some point?

Also, are you considering making it a pay site?

At some point I do want to begin to optimize load times if I can. It's not my first priority over fixing the initial bugs that are still popping up but yes, I don't want the site to be sluggish at all. You're on broadband?

Right now my intention is to keep it free of charge. I may, at some point, add a donation option but I don't forsee charging out right for it, even a minimal fee. :)

well i started putting my rosters in at around 12:30 and i still have 5 more players to add. The site is moving extremely slow for me and keeps freezing up for about 5-8 minutes every so often. I was just wondering if it is the site or just me?

Yeah, and I might sign up for some redundancy but I'm also signed up on another service. What I really also need to do is write a script that will restart the processes that run the site. The site is serverd partially by Apache and partially by some other servers specifically for the RoR part. These are what went down and I want to setup a script to automatically restart them if they die. :)

I wish I could say it wouldn't but apparently finding a good hosting company is proving to be a challenge for me. That combined with limited funds with which to pay for said hosting and trying to use somewhat unproven technology is becoming quite the challenge to keep AViD going.

My apologies guys. All I can say is that every day I spend more and more time trying to come up with a better solution. Hopefully some of you will still be around once things stabalize. AViD 2.0 did pretty well after the first few weeks of life. I don't remember the last time it went down before we changed over to 3.0.

Donations have been something I've considered recently with so many mentions. I'd like to be able to implement some feature that could be specific to donators (like Utopia does) as a thank you. Something like the player pictures or logos for dynasties. So before I would start doing donations I want to be able to add that kind of feature.

I remember when I retrofitting my Crows dynasty into AViD 2.0, this happened a lot also. After things smooth out a little, it should be more stable. I know Mandy's working a ton to get this fixed for all of us.

The wait is worth it.

1. Click on the game in the schedule.

2. Click the edit icon in the game header to go into edit mode

3. Go through the links of the game edit menu to fill out the forms with the game info you want to track

4. When you all done entering stats then click on the Field Goal icon to get the custom view window.

5. You can enter some stat titles or whatever you want in the text areas to customize a bit more the view. Then save it for later use.

6. Click on the bbcode button to get the text to paste in teh forums here. (ctrl-a, ctrl-c then ctrl-v here in a post you want to make.)

Agreed completely on FB's suggestion. AViD was made significantly easier for me because I started entering stats from BS dynasties beforehand.

1. I actually have yet to find the depth chart on 3.0. So I can't help much with that.

2. Rosters have nothing to do with a Sharkport. To get your rosters into AViD you have two options: enter them yourself, or wait to begin your dynasty until Mr. Tennessee and the others complete the default rosters (based on FK's and CDJ's names). Entering them yourself really doesn't take as long as people would think.

You need to click on the activation link that is sent to the email address you registered with. The database is indicating you haven't done this yet.

View it in 1024x768. That is the lowest resolution that is gauranteed to work. If its not working at that resolution then you should create a ticket at trac.avidmanager.com and report the problem with details on operating system, browser, version number and anything else that would help me fix it.

The reason for the 1024x768 minimum is that the data on the site combined with good font sizes to make things readable as well as layouts of certain pages to show different information requires a slightly bigger resolution. Theres no horizontal scroll bar because of some of the styles declarations that make the site layout work in firefox and IE. But 1024 should always work. If it doesn't then as I said, make a ticket to report specifics and I'll work on making it fit. Lower resolutions though I'm not going to support. I could probably spend a week trying to make things work right in lower browser resolutions. I don't have the time to do that. Sorry.

Actually I ended up having to move servers. Once the domain name resolves to the new server then you'll be able to access the site again. Generally they say it could take up to 24 hours. Usually it's been less in my experience. Some of you may be able to access the server before others. The new server is setup and ready to go so once the domain name is resolving to it then your wait will be over.

Word of warning though...off-season recruiting probably won't be working 100% yet because I had to use a newer version of the site on the new server and I wasn't finished with off-season fixes yet.

Your absence has been noticed. This mean your AViD days are over? I imagine if they manage to fully decode the dynasty save file you'll be happy enough with an excel file of all your stats so that you always know where that data is. :)

Seems the whole server has went down now. Forums went down, then the main page followed shortly. Don't know what's going on, but the speed of the main page was working fast earlier, then it goes down while i'm updating my recruits :(

As you can see from Jeremy above...The damn thing is propogated for some people but not everyone yet. I cheated and just pointed the URLs to the IP in my /etc/hosts file. I got tired of waiting when it still wasn't working this morning. If you guys are still having problems this afternoon let me know and maybe we'll just get everyone setup this way so you won't have to mess with it for now. This IS getting a tad annoying.

TexAg, you are having THE worst luck with trying to get on and AViD always being down. My apologies friends. The host is still having problems with the hardware node my server is on. I sent them a ticket demanding satisfaction after a week of continued problems. We'll see what they have to say in response. I'm dissappointed in their handling of things this week. The initial DNS problems aside, things have been pretty good on this server and I was very happy with the performance of the server and the customer support. Now though this is going beyond simple and acceptable outages and/or hardware problems. A week of sporadic and prolonged outages is just not acceptable. I'm afraid a server move may be the only option but I'll have to wait and see what kind of response I get. I'll keep you updated. :(

To be honest I made some changes that might cause this to happen every once in a while. I still need to take some time and tweak the settings of the server software and database to try to optimize things more. Hopefully I can eliminate some of these slowdowns all together but who knows. It's really not my area of expertise. :) So far they haven't been as bad as the old server so let's hope that continues for now.

Basically it was a "we're working hard on fixing it and we're committed to doing what it takes to fix the problem". This was after a week of the same problem happening and they hadn't said a word about it since it first started and they made 3 posts in their support forum and then silence. Basically I had given them a "You guys have been great...until last week so now it's time to step up or I'll be looking for a new host" and that was their response. I guess it's time for me to live by my promise to find a new host to spend my money on. [smile]

After looking at the site I'm not sure exactly where you're having a problem. Georgia Southern is on the list of schools for creating a new dynasty so I know that's not it. Are you talking about the Schedule? You will need to add teams to your custom teams list to schedule non 1-A opponents. Look under the main dynasty edit menu and you'll see customized teams list. Should be self explanatory after that.

Are you talking about the Schedule? You will need to add teams to your custom teams list to schedule non 1-A opponents. Look under the main dynasty edit menu and you'll see customized teams list. Should be self explanatory after that.

I'm getting e-raped here!Make the season private and we won't be able to see anything...other than the team. Edit your Dynasty from the main page and check the box to make Season Private...and I think you can even make the entire dynasty private, so only you can see it.

EDIT: On the main page of your dynasty, click the little edit icon. A menu appears on the left, click EDIT CURRENT SEASON. You'll see a list of options, check the Private Season box (right above the Save button). Voila.

Same roster minus seniors and you'll have a chance to do the Players leaving so you can remove those going pro and transfering. Don't remember if it automatically does it or not after starting a new season. I don't think it does so you will want to:

1) Start a new season (on Avid)
2) Do the players leaving (this is what creates the new roster)
3) Do recruiting or just add the new recruits through the Add Player (not recommended since recruiting info isn't done for the add player)

I had started making my own stat tracker type deal in Excel, but that was way too tedious and time consuming. AViD is very easy to use and makes dynasty reporting much easier.

So I posted this earlier, but no response.

When I try to log in (again, I haven't logged in in forever), it just clears the fields out and reloads the page and I don't log in. I may have forgotten my password, but I tried all the pass words I usually use. Why does this happen? Is it just me? Am I doing something wrong? Have I been perma-banned or something? Help?


EDIT: OK, so lemme explain some more. I go to the forums and try the pass words, none of which work, so I got to forgot my password. I enter my user name (joshuahuskers) and my email, and it says the email doesn't match the one for that account...so I'm like wtf, mate. Anyway, so I decide to go to maybe just create a new account. So I enter in a new user name, and the email I used to try to retrieve my password, and it says the email is taken. So it must have been the right email because who would steal my email to register there, and I already have an account on Avid. I know this because I have a dynasty on there (coastal Carolina, although I never did anything with it).

Sorry for missing the earlier post. I don't even remember seeing it. Glad you got it figured out though. The error messages (ie login failure) are not great right now, something that will hopefully change down the road and improve user experience.

How do you cut players so that they are removed from the roster page?

After I click edit on the Dynasty Home page, click cut players and start to delete players, I don't see a way to save and finalize the work that I've done.

Could anyone please advise me on how to correct this?

and I'd just like to add that I just found your deal today (still getting the hang of some things) and I think it's pretty amazing. It's taken my interest in the game from where it was resting at about a 6 and put it back at about a 9.

There's just something about compiling all that information that I get into. I don't know what it is.

At any rate, your program is much better than any other dynasty tracker stuff I've seen and my hat is certainly off.

The way I do it is: update attributes, backspace to roster page, click on next player. The updated attributes won't show until after you've refreshed the page.
