2006 Season Preview
April 3rd, 2006

Kansas City, MO- It’s that time of the year again where baseball fans get ready to root for their favorite team, hoping they’ll be playing for something meaningful come September. Well not to be pessimistic, but don’t expect to see the Royals competing for anything other than last place in the AL Central.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/kc/kauffm01.jpg
With such a beautiful stadium, it's a shame the Royals can't bring more fans too it.

The starting rotation is made up of Scott Elarton, Zach Greinke, Mark Redman, Denny Bautista, and Runelvys Hernandez. Scott Elarton was signed in the off-season after posting a 4.61 ERA with the Cleveland Indians last year, and is expected to be the their ace. On just about any other team he would be a number 4 or 5 starter. The Royals do have one bright spot in their rotation with Zach Greinke, but he’s young and is still developing.

Kansas City’s bullpen on the other hand isn’t all that bad. Made up of Joe Mays, Bobby Madritsch, Jeremy Affeldt, Kyle Middleton, Mike MacDougal, Mike Wood, and Elmer Dessens, the bullpen will be able to provide solid relief for the starters. The key to the bullpen is Mike MacDougal, he is the only experienced closer on the team and if he falters, Kansas City could be in trouble.

Runs won’t come in bunches this season as the Royals lack any kind of power in their lineup. Mike Sweeney, once a RBI machine, is batting cleanup, but is only a shell of his former self. You can expect to see a lot of small ball played whenever the Royals are on the field.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/kc/berroaKC.jpg
A big year from Angel Berroa would go a long way in making the Royals a winning team.

One has to wonder how the Royals are so bad, yet still so old. Well the answer lies within the head of former GM Allard Baird. After finishing in last place in the AL Central last year, Baird went out and signed free agents like Joe Mays, Reggie Sanders, and Mark Grudzielanek. These aren’t bad players, but they are all on the downside of their career and are just a temporary solution to a big problem. Kansas City ownership decided they had enough with Baird’s ways and wanted to bring in someone new.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/kc/image_2100679.jpg
Allard Baird no longer will be running things in Kansas City after being released earlier this year.

Soon after Baird was released from his duties, the Royals hired Arthur Curry to run the Royals. Baseball experts around the league scratched their heads at the move, being that Curry has no front office experience and their many other more suitable candidates out there.

“Let the experts say what they want,” said new GM Arthur Curry, “Everybody has to start somewhere and for me it’s here in Kansas City. Contrary to what’s been said, I do I know my baseball and am confident that I can turn this franchise around.”

Curry won’t be able to do much to help the Royals this season though and unless they can get some production from an unexpected source, 5th place in the AL Central is where the Royals will likely end up.

Royals Win Season Opener
April 4th, 2006

Detroit, MI- Kansas City opened their season up with a bang as they beat the division rival, Detroit Tigers 7-6 at Comerica Park in what was one of the most exciting games you’ll see all year.

Detroit got on the scoreboard first when Pudge Rodriguez hit a ball to the gap in right field that scored Brandon Inge and Carlos Guillen to give the Tigers the 2-0 lead. Kansas City would battle back though and would take the 3-2 lead in the 6th after John Buck and Doug Mientkiewicz each singled home a run. The Royals would add one more run to their lead in the 7th, but would quickly find themselves down 6-4 a half an inning later when the Tigers scored 4 runs, 3 of them coming off of a 2-out, 3-run homer from Ivan Rodriguez.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/kc/pudgehit.jpg
Ivan Rodriguez's 5 RBI weren't enough to beat the Royals today at Comerica Park.

“I have to give credit to Rodriguez for hitting that home run,” said Affeldt, “But I should have never been in that situation in the first place. My real mistake was not taking advantage of the 0-2 count I had on the Polanco, who batted before Rodriguez. I get him out and the inning is over, instead they score 4 runs to take the lead.”

Thankfully for Affeldt, the Royals would rally in the 8th and score 3 runs. Mark Grudzielanek, who signed with Kansas City as a free-agent this off-season, batted in what turned out to be the winning run when he hit a blooper over shortstop Carlos Guillen’s head.

The Tigers almost manufactured a run in the 9th to tie the game, but Royal’s shortstop Angel Berroa made an outstanding play on a ground ball up the middle to end the inning. Mike MacDougal was credited with the save.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/kc/angdef.jpg
Angel Berroa prevented the Tigers from scoring a run in the 9th with his diving effort.

The Royals play 2 more games against the Tigers until they travel to Anaheim to take on the Anaheim Angels.

Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Kyle Middleton fractured his toe in the 7th inning and will be placed on the 15-day DL. Andy Sisco will be called up from AAA to tak Middleton's spot in the bullpen.

Looks good Shakey, are you using default sliders? I'm in year three of my Cubs Dynasty and still on All-Star, using Hoop27's sliders from MVPmods.com, they are really good.

I'm considering going up to MVP next season though, I'd be interested if you had any sliders.

I just had the default sliders, but I think I'm going to try some different sliders over my next few games. I'll let you know how they are.

Ichiro, Seattle Beat Royals in their Home Opener
April 11th, 2006

Kansas City, MO- Ichiro is known for being one of the best hitters in the AL and today he showed why as he led the Seattle Mariners to a 7-2 victory over the struggling Kansas City Royals.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/kc/ichirodef.jpg
Ichiro not only did it with the bat, but with the arm as he threw out Kansas City's Mark Grudzielanek in the 5th inning.
Ichiro led the game off with an infield single and scored 4 batters later when William Bloomquist hit a ball just out of the reach of Royals second baseman Mark Grudzielanek. One inning later Ichiro was at it again, hitting a 3-run blast to the right field stands to give the Mariners the 4-0 lead after 2 innings.

“I haven’t hit the ball too well in the first 6 games,” said Ichiro who is now batting .296, “Hopefully after today’s game I can get back on track.”

Mark Redman started for the Kansas City Royals and never got going, giving up 6 runs, including 3 home runs, in only 6 innings of work.

Royals’ right fielder Emil Brown went 4 for 4 on the day, scoring both of Kansas City’s runs. Mark Grudzielanek, Angel Berroa, and John Buck were the only other Royals to get hits, with Berroa and Buck each having multiple hits.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/kc/browns.jpg
After his 4 hit effort today, Emil Brown is now hitting .345.

Royals Get 3rd Win of the Season
April 18th, 2006

Kansas City, MO- The Kansas City Royals blew two leads, but were still able to come out on top against the Cleveland Indians, 5-4, today at Kauffman Stadium.

Scott Elarton, who came over from Cleveland in the off-season, started against his former team and continued his early season success, going 7 innings and giving up only 3 runs.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/scottpit.jpg
Scott Elarton leads all Kansas City starters with a 3.43 ERA.

“It’s always nice to pitch well against your former team, especially when your team could really use a win.” said Scott Elarton.

The Royals got on the board first when leadoff man David DeJesus hit a 3-run homer off of Cleveland starter Jake Westbrook in the 3rd inning. The Indians would battle their way back in the 6th, scoring 3 runs, 2 of them compliments of a Travis Hafner home run.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/hafner.jpg
Travis Hafner leads his team with 3 home runs.

“He’s the kind of player who can change the game with his bat,” said Royals manager Buddy Bell speaking of Travis Hafner, “We were able to pitch around him his first 2 times up, but eventually he is going to make you pay.”

Heading into the bottom of the 8th, the game was tied at 4 and Angel Berroa was due up. Berroa proceeded to hit a double off of Jake Westbrook and put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Westbrook would be relieved by veteran pitcher Bob Wickman, but Wickman would give up a single to Doug Mientkiewicz that would score Berroa and give the Royals the winning run.

The Royals have now won 2 of their last 3 games and our 7 games behind the AL Central leading, Minnesota Twins.

Royals Lose to World Series Champions
April 24th, 2006

Kansas City, MO- The Chicago White Sox hit 3 home runs off of Denny Bautista to beat the struggling Kansas City Royals 8-3.

Bautista had trouble getting White Sox hitters out all night as he gave up a total of 5 runs and was finally pulled from the game in the 6th after he gave up a lead-off home run to Joe Crede.

Jim Thome and Tadahito Iguchi also each had a home run for Chicago.

“He’s having trouble locating his pitches right now and when you can’t control where the ball is going, it’s going to be a long day,” said Royals manager Buddy Bell of Bautista. “Right now other teams are just unloading on all of our pitchers and if we don’t fix the problem soon, we’re going to have a hard time winning games.”

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/bell.jpg
Kansas City manager Buddy Bell can't be happy with how his team has played so far this season.

The Royals are now 4-15 and have the worst record in all of baseball.

Jose Contreras started for the White Sox and pitched 7.1 innings and struck out 5 Kansas City batters.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/josewarm.jpg
Jose Contreras warming up before the game.

“My last couple of starts I haven’t pitched the way I would have liked, so going out there today and getting the win felt great.” said Contreras.

David DeJesus, Emil Brown, and Angel Berroa each stole a base for the Kansas City Royals and Brown and Berroa’s stolen bases led to 2 off Kansas City’s 3 runs.

“Anytime you can get yourself into scoring position, it really helps put pressure on the pitcher,” said David DeJesus who stole a base in the 3rd. “Of course there’s the chance you can get thrown out, but when you have someone on the mound like Contreras who is wheeling and dealing, you got to take chances.”

The Royals have the day off tomorrow and will prepare for their upcoming series with the first place Minnesota Twins.

Meintkiewicz Injured, Royals Lose 11-3
May 1st, 2006

Cleveland, OH- Every hitter on the Cleveland Indians had a hit today as the Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 11-3.

“Days like today are the best,” said Jason Micheals who had 3 hits and 3 RBI. “Everyone had their best stuff and it really creates a great mood in the clubhouse.”

Runelvys Hernandez started for the Royals, but gave up 6 early runs and was pulled from the game in the 3rd.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/kc/rueher.jpg
Runelvys Hernandez now has a 7.77 ERA after today's bashing.

“I always want to give my pitchers a chance to go deep into the game, but I thought making a change would maybe give us a little jolt and help us get back into the game.” said Kansas City manager Buddy Bell.

Joe Mays relived Hernandez in the 3rd, but wasn’t much better, giving up 4 runs in 3 innings of work.

The Royals were bad in the field all day and because of misplayed balls in the outfield from Reggie Sanders and Emil Brown, the Indians scored 4 extra runs.

“Me and Emil both took a chance by diving for the ball, trying to make play and it just didn’t pay off,” said outfielder Reggie Sanders. “Next time maybe I’ll be a bit more cautious.”

The Indians scored 6 runs in the first two innings, 2 of them compliments of a Casey Blake 2-run homer.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/kc/reggwatch.jpg
Reggie Sanders watches Casey Blakes 2-run homer clear the fences in the 2nd inning.

Kansas City would cut the Tribe’s lead in half in the 3rd when they scored their only 3 runs on the game.

Cleveland would go on to score 5 more, securing their 13th win of the season.

Doug Mientkiewiz fractured his toe in the 8th inning diving for a ball and will be out for 4-6 weeks. Ken Harvey will be called up from Omaha and replace Mientkiewicz at 1st base.

Royals Lose Heartbreaker
May 8th, 2006

Baltimore, MD- Baltimore Oriole David Newhan picked a good time to hit his first triple of the season, as Baltimore beat the Kansas City Royals 8-6.

Newhan, who came into the game after DH Ramon Hernandez was injured, blasted a ball to the right field wall that score Miguel Tejada and Melvin Mora to give the Orioles a 7-6 lead after being down 6-0.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/kc/newhan.jpg
David Newhan came up big when his team needed it.

“I know my role on this team and when Ramon went down early in the game, I was ready to come in and contribute,” said the hero of the game, David Newhan. “We were losing all game and then finally there in the 7th I got a chance to give us the lead and I did exactly that.”

Zach Greinke started for the Royals and pitched a terrific game up until the 6th when he gave up 5 runs, including 2 home runs, to allow the Orioles back in the game.

“I have to pitch better than what I did today,” said a disappointed Greinke. “We can’t afford to throw games away like that and I blew it. I had only allowed what, 4 hits going into the 6th? Too fall apart the way I did is just unacceptable.”

The Royals scored the first run of the game in the 1st when Reggie Sanders grounded into a double play that scored Mark Grudzielanek from 3rd.

Kansas City would add 2 more runs to their 1-0 lead in the 4th, when after Baltimore starter Rodrigo Lopez walked the first 3 batter, Mark Grudzielanek grounded into a double play to score Ken Harvey from 3rd. One batter later, Mike Sweeney would hit a bouncer over Baltimore third baseman Melvin Mora to score Mark Teahen.

The Royals weren’t done there, as they scored 2 more runs in the 5th, one coming from a bases loaded walk and the other a throwing error. Then in the 6th Angel Berroa would hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Reggie Sanders and give Kansas City a 6-0 lead.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/kc/berrsac.jpg
Angel Berroa's sacrifice fly would be the last run the Royals would score in their 8-6 loss.

The Orioles would make it a game though, scoring 5 runs in the 6th, 3 of them coming for Melvin Mora 3-run blast to the left field seats.

Then in the 8th, Baltimore would get their first lead of the game after David Newhan hit his clutch triple to score 2 runs. One batter later, Javy Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to left field that brought Newhan home and gave the Orioles a 2-run lead.

Kansas City would threaten in the 9th, but after Baltimore closer John Halama picked off John Buck on 1st, the Royals lost all of their momentum and the next 2 batters grounded out.

Curry Makes First Move as Royals GM
May 13th, 2006

Arthur Curry made his first big move as the Royals' GM today when he traded shortstop Angel Berroa, second baseman Mark Grudzielanek, and left fielder Reggie Sanders to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for shortstop Rafael Furcal and second baseman Cesar Izturis.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/gurdy.jpg
Mark Grudzielanek will be returning to the NL after his short stay in the AL.

The move was a pleasant surprise to Kansas City fans who were told by GM Arthur Curry at the beginning of the season that he didn’t want to make any major changes to the opening day roster. After a 7-29 start though, Curry felt compelled to make some kind of move.

“Going into the season I was hoping to give all of the players a chance to prove themselves, but we got off to a horrific start and it’s my responsibility to do something,” said Curry.

Furcal and Izturis are both significant upgrades over Berroa and Grudzielanek, but they also both come with expensive contracts, which is the main reason why the Dodgers gave them up.

“When you make trades, sometimes you’re going to have to take a hit financially to get the better player,” said Curry. “Obviously this is a situation where we feel that the players we’re receiving are worth their salaries.”

Furcal signed with the Dodgers this off-season after a terrific year last season with the Atlanta Braves. The Dodgers were expecting him to be one of the top lead-off hitters in the game, but instead Furcal has struggled with his new team. Even with his lack-luster performance so far this season, the Royals feel he still has the ability to be one of the best shortstops in baseball.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/ladfur.jpg
Rafael Furcal is one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball.

Izturis has been on the trading block since opening day, but it’s not because he lacks talent.

“I’m expecting big things from Izturis,” said Curry. “Last season he played well offensively and defensively, but this year he hasn’t got a chance to play because Los Angeles didn’t have a position for him. Hopefully he can help us get back on track”

The trade does leave the Royals with a hole in left field. Matt Stairs will most likely replace Reggie Sanders, but Stairs is 37 years old and is below average defensively. The Royals may even make another move to bring in someone to take over in left field.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/msta.jpg
Matt Stairs, who hasn't been a regular in the outfield since 2004, will now start at left field for the Royals.

Outfielder Kerry Robinson will be promoted from Omaha to fill in the extra roster spot.

New Players, Same Results
May 14th, 2006

Kansas City, MO- Even with the help of newly acquired shortstop Rafael Furcal and second baseman Cesar Izturis, the Kansas City Royals still lost 11-5 against the Tampa Devil Rays today at Kauffman Stadium.

Ken Harvey has been outstanding since being called up for the injured Doug Mientkiewicz and had another terrific game today scoring a run and collecting 3 hits.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/mient.jpg
When Doug Mientkiewicz comes back off of the DL, it'll be interesting to see what the Royals do about their excess of first baseman.

“I’ve just been practicing real hard and trying to absorb everything the coaches are telling me and it’s paid off,” said Harvey who is hitting .409 on the season. “When I started the season down in Omaha I was disappointed, but when Doug got hurt and I got called up, I made it a priority to prove to the coaches that I belong in the big leagues.”

Matt Stairs got his first start in left field this season and showed why he is considered to be a designated hitter. Stairs batted in the Royals first run, but was horrific in the field as he had trouble getting to easy pop-ups that resulted in base hits that really should have been outs.

Mark Redman started for the Royals, but could only last 4 innings after giving up 6 runs, including 2 home runs. There has been speculation that Buddy Bell was considering taking Redman, who is now sporting a 7.11 ERA, out of the starting rotation in favor of Jeremy Affeldt and in an interview after the game, Bell hinted towards making the move.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/marred.jpg
Mark Redman has pitched his way out of the starting rotation with his 1-7 record.

“Our pitching has been awful this season,” said Bell. “Our pitchers can’t be allowing 11 runs a game if we expect to be competitive. Tonight was a situation where our offense scored enough runs to win the game, but the pitching let us down. For that reason myself and the rest of the staff are ready to make a move.”

Kansas City scored the first run of the game in the 2nd when Matt Stairs batted in Reggie Sanders.

A half an inning later in the top of the 3rd, the Devil Rays would score their first 3 runs of the game, including a bases loaded walk that score Toby Hall.

Mark Teahen scored in the bottom of the 3rd when David DeJesus hit a ball back up the middle to make the score 3-2.

Tampa Bay would put the game away in the 4th and 5th though, scoring a total of 8 runs, 2 of them compliments of a home run to left field by Toby Hall.

Kansas City will look to avoid getting swept by the Devil Rays tomorrow in the last game of the series.

Elarton Pitches a 2-Hitter
May 21st, 2006

Kansas City, MO- Scott Elarton had perfect game through 6 innings helping the Kansas City Royals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 for their 4th win in their last 5 games.

The Cardinals had no answers for Elarton who was wheeling and dealing all day long. It wasn’t until the 7th inning when David Eckstein hit a blooper over first baseman Ken Harvey’s head that the Cardinals got their first base runner of the day.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/daveck.jpg
David Eckstein got a cheap hit in the 7th to break up Elarton's perfect game.

“It’s tough when a pitcher has a perfect game going late in the game,” said David Eckstein. “Instead of focusing on winning the game, you start to focus all attention on just breaking up the perfect game. Nobody wants to be on the wrong end of a perfect game.”

Elarton would end up giving up another hit in the 7th inning to Jim Edmonds, but would get out of the inning without allowing any runs.

“I was in the zone,” said a smiling Elarton. “Whenever I stepped onto the mound I felt un-hittable. I wasn’t even thinking about the perfect game, all my concentration was centered on getting the Cardinals out. It was the greatest game of my life.”

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/scotealr.jpg
Scott Elarton could do no wrong today pitching 7 innings, giving up only 2 hits.

Kansas City went up 2-0 in the 1st inning with the help of the newest Royals, Rafael Furcal and Cesar Izturis. Izturis batted in Furcal when he hit a line drive down the first base line and then 4 batters later Matt Stairs hit a ball that dropped right in front of centerfielder Jim Edmonds that scored Cesar Izturis from third.

The Royals would add 1 more run to their lead in the 5th when Mike Sweeney blasted a ball to the right field wall that scored David DeJesus.

St. Louis would score their only in the 9th when Scott Rolen pounded a ball off of Royals closer Mike MacDougal 475 feet to left field for his 9th home run of the season.

Kansas City will attempt to take 3 of 3 from the Cardinals tomorrow and then head to Texas the day after to start a 3 games series with the Rangers.

Homeruns Carry Angels to Victory
May 28th, 2006

Anaheim, CA- With the help of homeruns from Vladimir Guererro and Orlando Cabrera, the Anaheim Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 this afternoon at Angel Stadium.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/ocab.jpg
Orlando Cabrera came up big in the 7th inning hitting a 2-run homer to give the Angels the 4-2 lead.

Royals' starter Denny Bautista threw a good game, but made 2 giant mistakes that cost him the win.

“He’s a young guy and he’s going to make mistakes,” said Royals' manager Buddy Bell. “In the 1st inning he tried to overpower Vladimir Guererro and that’s just not going to happen. He’s got good stuff, he just has to get more experience at the big league level and learn when to throw certain pitches.”

Kansas City didn’t just lose the game though as they also lost right fielder Emil Brown for 6-8 weeks with a concussion.

“In the 9th inning he slid into second base and the second baseman’s knee caught Emil in the head,” said head trainer Alan Scott. “It’s a pretty severe concussion and he’s going to need some time to recover.”

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/shakeyjake448/ebrown.jpg
The Royals will miss Emil Brown's strong arm in the outfield.

With the injury to Brown, the Royals may be forced to make a move to bring in another outfielder. They were already unhappy about having to play Matt Stairs outfield, but now they have even less depth. Buddy Bell stated after the game that he wasn’t sure who was going to take over for Brown, but chances are that David DeJesus will move over from center to right field and Kerry Robinson, who was called up from AAA after Reggie Sanders was traded, will take over in center.

John Buck and Mark Teahen, who hit 8 and 9 in the Royals' lineup, each scored a run and had 3 hits on the day.

The Angels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st when Vladimir Guererro hit a bomb to left field with Chone Figgins on base.

Kansas City didn’t give up though, as David DeJesus would hit a beamer down the third base line to score Mark Teahen to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Angels.

The Royals would then tie the game up in the 7th when Cesar Izturis just beat out the throw from Angels third baseman Edgar Alfonso to get an infield single and score John Buck from third.

Anaheim would ultimately win the game though after Orlando Cabrera showed a rare sign of power, hitting a 2-run homerun to left field to give the Angels the 4-2 win.

Kansas City will look to avoid getting swept by the Angels tomorrow and then head back home to prepare for a 6 game home stand.
