View Full Version : I played March Madness recently.

Now, I have only played 2 games but...
It may be the worst game I have ever played. The last EA basketball game I played was NBA Live 2001 (my first ever purchase for the ps2) and that years Live was better than this piece of crap. There are so many things wrong with it.
In no particular order:
It feels like I'm playing an arcade game. The graphics are weird lookin'. I can't explain it.
R2 is a button solely for the alley-oop. WHAT A WASTE OF A BUTTON. I really don't understand that.
A different button for layups and jump shits respectively. If I press the layup button by accident when I am outside the 3 pt line, I don't want my guy to do that stupid layup motion and throw the ball to the basket.
The passing icons change. They should be set like in CH. L1 for the center, triangle for the PF, square for the SF, circle for the SG and x for the PG. I shouldn't have to look at the icons that appear everytime I press the button to bring them up!
Low-Post moves are dooooooooooodooooooooo. You can actually do stuff under the basket in CH. There is a plethora of moves...not in MM. There's was like one move: Dunk. That's it, back to the basket press the button and all of a sudden the guy is dunking it.
Maybe I didn't look hard enough, but I couldn't find a way to change the gameplay setting (ala All-American, All-Conference) in game.
The lock down stick is over done. It's like the impact player feature in football.
Which leads in to...Man 2 Man defense is garbage. I tried to do the lock down stick on Farmar (my friend was UCLA) as he is bring the ball up court and I press the strip button but the ball goes forward and now I am trailing my man who has a clear land to the basket because the rest of his team has spread the floor. So my friend drives to the basket UNTOUCHED. Nobody came over to help and leave their man.
I can't think of any more right now

I too have played March Madness recently, and it is the worst game I have ever played. I played with some of my friends who I let play College Hoops for their first time. Some how they though March Madness was better and more realistic then College Hoops.
I haven't talked to those friends much lately.

I swear man CH2k6 is like NCAA football 2004 for me. It is a DRUG, a serious drug.

supposedly unless you actually block the shot, being right in someones face doesn't do anything, they might as well be wide open.

I understand completely. I am using EA Aggies sliders, and I am ADDICTED to CH2k6. There is so much to do, it is so realistic. Sega is definitely on point with this game.

I discovered something today on CH2k6. If you go to polls about midseason it shows everyone's RPI rank from #1 to like #334.

yea the rpi thing is cool.
the only gripe i have with CH is the recruit's heights. man....if they fixed that, toned it down to where it was more realistic, this would be one of the best basketball games ever made. sure, there are other things needing fixing, but that's the one thing that really bothers me.

I think usually the 5* are the ones that are very tall. I'm trying to recruit a 4* PG that is 5'11". I have a small gripe with recruiting and that they need to add more cities on the game than what they have put in so far.

Use it a way to restrict recruiting, my good man.
Visualize your perfect team. I like small teams that can run. my Guards are 5'10"-6'4" who can shoot and are quick. My SF is 6'6" with good athleticism and a mid-range game, my PF-C are 6'9"-7'0" but 220-250 for alhleticism. For my starting 5..Thats the team I want. Very athletic, can shoot the rock. Very quick to get out in the open floor and create easy baskets with a fast break and/or full-court press. So, I only look for guys that fit THAT mold.
Actually makes it quite fun because you get the team YOU want on the floor.

I have 2 gripes..One small and one large.
1. Have a 'Select Everything' Option on recruiting. This has been lessened by CH2k6 on 360's supposed jump from 5 E-mail Recruits to 1 Email Recruit. Very tiring to have to do 5 E-mails, a phone call, and a in-home visit when I could have it done in one button.
2. Re-do the entire pressing system. Even against piss poor teams (Texas vs. Texas Southern for example)..The only way to force any turnovers with a press is to either watch the CPU make a pass out of bounds, which rarely happens, or in Full-Court Man to Man, the CPU runs itself out of bounds. The Full Court Trap is basically useless, and the Zone Presses are pretty weak when I try to use them. Theres no real set-ups to the presses. No trap spots, no rotation on ball movement. Just 3-4 guys running around after the ball like clunderfucks. Also..Everytime a double team even comes close, the guy AUTOMATICALLY passes the ball. Sometimes..it just doesnt happen. A guy hangs onto the ball, or he dribbles, maybe step-throught he trap and pass. SOMETHING. I should be rewarded for running a pressure defensive effectively..Not watch them play hot-potato with the ball and get an easy layup every time.

The pressing thing is a gripe of mine too. Your turnover ratio goes up by pressing, but not from realistic steals that would be made in a full court press scenario. Like you said, either the ball handler dribbles out of bounds or passes it right into the chest of the man guarding him. Last year's presses were run very well (at least the 2-2-1 press was), almost to a fault. But that's definitely something they need to work on for 2k7.

yea, but if you do that, the computer controlled teams will gang rape you on the boards, with 7' SF, 7' PF, and 7'3 C.
right now my starters consist of a 5'11 PG, 6'9 SG (who was 6'8 but grew), a 6'7 SF, 6'11 PF (who was originally a 6'10 SF) and a 7' C. My bench is mostly realistic, but damn...they gotta fix that

Perhaps you can email them this gripe. I get the feeling that they actually do listen to your complaints. I dont notice the problem because I am clueluess about those Offensive and Defensive plays. [laugh] [down]

Yes.
This game is bad enough when playing the CPU, but sliders help a lot.
I haven't played anyone in person, but have played online. That really exposes this game as a joke.
I especially agree with your comments on low-post moves and defensive AI. The graphics don't bother me too much, though I've heard that complaint/comment from others. I do hate the limited options in editing players...it's impossible to make them look like their real-life counterparts...if that was possible, I think the graphics issue wouldn't be quite as noticeable, IMO.
I don't like the two-button set-up for dunks/shots either - it takes several games (if not more) to get used to.
Overall, I've come to this conclusion on MM:
* If the MM staff is clueless when it comes to basketball, then this game isn't so bad.
* However, if they are considered "experts" on CBB, then this is a pretty bad game.
I think it has a lot of potential (I like some of the basic ideas they are trying to do), but too many things are poorly implemented. I believe I read that Ben Brinkman left the MVP crew to go work on MM....that should give the series a well-needed shot in the arm...though, I don't expect many miracles in one year of work.

I can't stand listening to the menu screen music anymore -- and that song is the absolute worst. It was cute and funny the first time....but hearing it once was enough to last me a lifetime.
