View Full Version : Major Conference Bias?

So I just got to Selection Sunday in Year 2 of my legacy, and here's the conference distributions:
Big East: 10
ACC: 9
Big 12: 7
That's 23 of the 34 at-large bids taken up by 3 conferences! It could have been even worse if not for a few mid-major surprise conference tourney winners. Anybody else had numbers this out of whack?

I've had numbers just like that for the tournament the last several years. It's seems those three conferences get 8-9 bids while the Big 10, Pac 10, and SEC get about 3 bids so I found that odd.

Yeah, NC State got in with a 16-15 record and Providence got in with a 15-12 record while Arizona was left out with a 21-11 record and won the PAC-10 regular season. The PAC-10 only ended up sending 2 teams.

The same goofy scenarios happen in MM as well. I imagine it's mainly due to the game taking teams with low RPIs - the easy way out when programming. You'd think they'd catch some errors like that in testing...[oops]

I hated that in MM. Maybe it aws in a past version or two and maybe they've fixed it..but the rankings LITERALLY went by top 65 in RPI (minus conf. champs past that number)

It's not much better....I didn't look to see if they went straight off the RPI list or not. (Personally, I doubt they've fixed anything in MM in years.) Unless it changes at the end of the year, you can only see the RPI Top 25 and even in the 'Team Information' screen, it only lists the RPI rank for the top 60 or so. (Yet the media poll ranks every team on the Team Information screen. I thought maybe they mixed up the RPI/Media Polls on this screen, but that's not the case.)
I do know that the "Bubble Watch" is VERY messed up on MM. For example, my Nebraska squad finished the year 20-11 (10-6) including a 2-1 mark in the Big 12 Tourney. Not once did I crack the "Watch"-list. Yet, Creighton 12-15 (11-7) and Boston College 12-15 (5-11) did. I have no problem with not making the tourney (I lost some bad games early on), but for my team to not make the "bubble" and for BC and CU to make the is very frustrating and shows laziness/incompetence -not to mention poor testing- on the part of EA.
I should simulate several season on MM to see how bad this problem is compared to CH. It seems that both rely too heavily on their computed RPI from what I am hearing.

I had 11 from the Big 12 one year. No Joke.
All of them had legitimate records, some had better conference records than others. Another thing that was weird to me was Wake went the entire regular season undefeated and only finished 5-11 in conference but still got an at-large berth.
I just thought of this, since the NCAA now owns the NIT, could there be possibly the NIT tourney in the game? I think when you have a small conference team and don't quite get to the NCAA, the NIT would be a chance to face your type of competition.

I think this has been considered before, but since there would be too much effort involved to add a postseason NIT, they'll probably just let it go haha.

IMO, the NCAA seedings is great in CH2K6 compared to the first one (TJ Ford cover).
Only problem I have is how you can be the #1 overall seed with......let's say Texas......but get sent to Washington DC instead of Atlanta.

Just thought I would share the conference teams selected in the first year of my legacy at Charleston Southern.
Big East: 10
Big Ten: 3
ACC: 4
Big 12: 5
Sec: 2
Pac-10 1..The conference tourney champs, the Oregon Ducks.
I was also surprised to see Birmingham Southern who is in the Big South, get's an at-large birth while finishing 2nd to my Buccaneers in the reg. season and doesn't even win the conference tourney! Radford won it.
Anyway I went 15-10. My non-conference schedule killed me, so I'm sure I'll schedule some cupcakes or may enter a pre season tourney in the future. Looking forward to it!

Well that explains how screwed up the game is..
Texas a #1 seed...Yeah that'll be the day.

I hope they can tweak this a little next year. Overall I have been pleased with the way seedings have gone.

And in my dynasty I go 20-12 and get left out as i see a balance of teams get in with only the SEC getting three. :(

On the other hand, I happened to see texas get a #1 seed...and get sent to Austin. ;)
