Before I started my recent Legacy, I replaced Clemson with Gonzaga to see what would happen. To my surprise they are really thriving, being a Elite 8 team every year and having at least an 88 overall rating.Has anyone else tweaked their conferences like this? If so, what were the results like?

Tweaked Conferences? I realigned the whole damn thing.[laugh]

It took me hours, but I actually made a spreadsheet with every team, sorted them by state, and tried to make conferences that were geographical and ignored talent for the most part. It is awesome!

OK, but it make me some enemies when people see what I have done with their favorite team.

If you REALLY wanted to be a nerd, you should do it by latitude and longitude instead of by state.

I bet you could really come up with some awesome placement that way.

Oh, I will am planning on posting it. I was writing up my methodology so to speak, to go with the spreadsheet, but I just ran out of time. I have to go to work right now, so I will have it up in the morning.

Looking forward to it. Of course, you posted in the past, thus presumably it should be up by now. Not trying to be rude, but... it does sound mighty interesting. :)

Sorry for the delay. Life got hectic for a few days. Here goes...

I always wanted to rearrange the CFB and CBB world, so when this game allowed for custom conferences, I had my chance. This is the world according to Wooly…..if I ran the zoo……..

I have always been a nut about geography, so I decided to change conferences to reflect it. I printed out come blank maps of the US, and started plotting teams, to see where the geography grouped teams for confs. There were several hardspots in doing that, some bias, and several exceptions, but overall, it is a geographic masterpiece. LOL Here are some factors that I considered.
Confounding Factors:
1) Sizes of confs don’t change. Sometimes I had to put teams in conf with teams from other states, in fact most of the time I did. But I did it the best I could to make geography make sense (unless I was being lazy). Sometimes a team was placed that just didn’t make sense, so that 5 others would make sense. There were tradeoffs all over.
2) Names of confs don’t change, and some just scream that they contain certain teams from certain places. In the end, there was only one conf that didn’t make sense, the Mid-Cont.
3) A subtle reality: confs are in greater number in some regions than in others, and sometimes a conf near the border of a region switches over and becomes one for another. The WAC having TX teams, for instance.
4) Just plain old bias. I loved some teams and confs, and couldn’t move them. Others I had to have grouped in a certain conf, like all the Philadelphia teams together. The follwing confs were left alone for a variety of biased reasons: PAC 10, MVC mostly, Ivy League, and I had to leave most of MVC together because I have a soft spot for them too. Also, I started in the West, and finished in the South, Florida to be precise, so those teams made up most of the Ind. Conf.

First, I needed to get SUU (my team) and the other Utah teams into the MWC. The rest of the western confs were shaped by that. Then I just started grouping things. Here is a rundown of each conf in each of the 5 regions.

WEST
I created two CA teams because I liked them (UC Santa Cruz and CS Bakersfield), and that made the necessity of bringing over the Big 12 conf to hold all of the CA teams.

Mountain West - This one was made to have my team, SUU, be with all the other Utah teams. The two teams from NV made sense to include, and NAU was added because they are close to SUU, and they play them a lot.
Big 12 – This is the UC and Cal State systems conf. I thought it was fitting to put them all together. Just imagine all those Blue and Yellow combinations for home and away! LOL
West Coast Conf – I just swapped out the teams needed for the BWC, and added some other CA schools to make this all CA conf. Most of them are private too.
PAC Ten – I left it alone.
Big Sky Conf – When you look at it geographically, this one made a ton of sense. All the NW teams outside of the Pac10 are together here.
Big West – I got that band of teams from the eastern edge of the west all together. They line up nice north to south.

MIDWEST
I had to make more tradeoffs here. I finally decided to include the two Dakota states, and that really made things tough. I finally decided to group all those Midwest states with just a couple of schools altogether. It made it possible to group all the other states better.

CUSA – This is what I was just talking about. I just threw everything from North Dakota to Oklahoma in one big pot. It is probably the conf arrangement I am least proud of, but it just made everything else fit so much better. It is also one ridiculously hard conf relative to the others now, though that was not my intention.
WAC – It was used for western TX teams mostly, making the conf name still apply.
Sun Belt – Well, it’s sunny in TX, and I needed a larger conf to get almost the rest of the TX teams in one conf.
Horizon – This one kept the core area intact well, WI and MI.
Big Ten – All of IL fit in here nice.
MAC – Well, I almost got all of OH in here.
OhioValley –I know, I know, why not all the OH teams in here? Well, I almost did it that way, but in the end I could get 12 of 13 OH teams in the MAC, of which many already were.

NORTHEAST
I decided that the Ivy League had to be left alone, so the rest became very obvious. There were only two real ways to go, and that fact that NY is nicely divided between city and upstate teams, sealed the deal, since I didn’t want all the NE teams in one mega conf like the Big East.

Atlantic 10 – fits the 13 PA teams very nicely. Youngstown OH is right on the border.
Northeastern – Here the upstate NY teams fit great.
American East – Also easy. Northern NE, plus Albany.
Patriot. – CT and RI
Big East – The hardest decision in this region. I decided to put all the NYC teams and all the NJ teams here. I also just had to see Georgetown and GW in a northeastern conf, since they have always been integral to it, and they rounded out the conf nicely…even if they are the anomaly in this region.

MID-ATLANTIC
This was also pretty straight forward. The hard part was how to integrate WV. Also, since VA has 13 teams, they were very easy to group in a 12 team Colonial (and the name works too). The rest flowed from there.

Colonial – All but one VA teams.
ACC - I had to get WV in, and Maryland was the only good way. The numbers worked.
MEAC and MAAC – a combination of getting all the NC teams, and still needing the DE and DC teams.

SOUTHERN
Most of the states have the bulk of their teams in one conf, which was not easy to do.

SWC – a hard conf to make, since I needed to get one last TX and OK team in. But since LA is close, this one worked. The name works traditionally too.
Southern – AR teams needed a partner, and KY was close and the right size.
Southland – Mississipi needed a partner, and the remaining LA teams were perfect.
SEC – All but one TN team.
Big South – All the AL teams.
Atlantic Sun - All the SC teams.
Mid Con – definitely the hardest conf to make. I hated using this name here, but something had to give, and this was the tail end of the process. GA is next to FL, so it works.
Independent – Well, FL was not a priority for me, and they were the last place geographically, so this is how it went down.

Some will notice the absence of Duke and Miami from the teams. I tried to talk to Coach K about it, but I couldn’t understand anything through the profanity and conceit. Maybe next year buddy. WINK, WINK. Miami, well you should have thought about it before you beat my Nebraska Cornhuskers in several bowl games. You go to Hell and Die! LOL

The Excel File is a lot better looking, so open it up. It's an attatchment. But you can see all the confs below too.

Thanks guys. As it turns out, I messed up a few teams. I think there were 6-7 teams in the wrong state. I am just about done with a new conf realignment that doesn't have any confs kept intact. It's just about straight geography. I will put up that breakdown and a map tonight I hope

can you please post the new breakdown? I'd really like to use it.
