I went to the UNC intra-squad scrimmage today. About 70% of the team is different from last year's roster. However, we are returning a lot of good players that were freshmen last year. Should be an interesting season.

Wolfpack had another blowout win over Hofstra, 19-6, to start the series with them this weekend at Doak. With the rain today, I don't know whether or not they will be playing the second game at two or put it as a double-header tomorrow.

State starts playing real opponents on the 17th-19th down in Charleston, SC..or at least one real opponent in Nebraska. I haven't been able to make it out to a game, but the Pack has outscored its opponents 69-11 thru 4 games...granted they were against Delaware State and one v. Hofstra.

Weird Nebraska would come to Charleston, but it should really determine how well our team can play this year. I'm not a big fan of baseball myself but I'd like to think after basketball season I spend boring spring days on gametracker seeing if NCSU is winning.

FSU is back home against UNC-A (or as I like to call them, unca fuckers) this weekend. Tonight's game starts at 5pm and the weather is freaking amazing right now.

We lost one game to them last year with a pretty young team. This series should give a good comparison against last year's squad.

That is one goofy ass picture of me on Rivals. I had just come from a baseball game obviously.

There's a kid in the Junior class who is a top 10 player in Texas and a top 50 player in the country from my school who is very interested in UNC as well. Clemson swept James Madison last weekend to improve our record to 3-0. We have Mercer coming to Clemson this weekend, then a game vs. College of Charleston and a home and home series with South Carolina. We should be 6-0 going into the C of C game. FSU defeated Maryland 9-7 Friday night after leading 9-0 through six. Then Mke Martin Ball reared its ugly head again...Bryan Henry was clearly done...everyone in the stadium except Mike Martin knew this. But Mike Martin Ball requires you to give up four runs before even putting anyone down in the pen to warm up, and that's what we did. And of course the guy we brought in was rushed, and not really warm...but we escaped the top of the 7th with only 4 runs scored.

Another coach might have sent that releiver back to the pen to keep warming up, but this isn't what you do in Mike Martin Ball. So Marsh comes back in at the top of the 8th, still cold, and promptly gives up a 3 run BOMB to the deepest part of the field.

There is a reason why, despite over 1400 career wins, Mike Martin doesn't have a CWS ring.

FSU over Maryland last night, 6-2. Tyler Chambliss pitched a complete game, with 123 pitches and 15 strike-outs...the most for an FSU pitcher since Randy Choate in 1997.

Not sure why Martin felt the need to keep him in that long. We have plenty of decent pitchers inthe pen who need work, and all this does is wear on Chambliss' arm.

Yeah, they're at UNC this year.

I think what is killing us this year is our bullpen and Woodard and Bard not playing up to par. The bullpen has been horrendous causing us to have to use 4-5 pitchers per game. Woodard has struggled all year and Bard looked horrible today.

FSU lost game two at VT today 7-9. That'll pretty much erase the #1 ranming for a while...which I'm fine with.

Regular starter Tyler Chambliss was sick, and did not play. For some insane reason, Martin decided to start #3/4 Mike Hyde for the game, even though he threw earlier in the week....so only 4 days rest. Not sure why you do that when you have a pen full of guys who need game experience and have a lot of talent...but then Martin doesn't have a CWS ring so....

Tomorrow is the rubber match game.

FWIW, Brackman pitched today but not having a good go of it so far from what I read on PackPride. Hope Herb didn't ruin his baseball skills too :p. Not what I was expecting after State's series win over GT last weekend.

Anyhow, big home game on Wednesday night v. East Carolina, followed by a home series against Virginia on the weekend. Caleb Mangum got the winning run in the bottom of the 9th off of Matt Camp's hit. I was getting a little worried early in the game, mainly because State's hitting has been so explosive this year but things got kinda quiet down in Clemson and were even moreso through the first half of tonight's game. Good recovery after the four game slide, hopefully things get back on track for State in ACC play against Virginia this weekend. Is there a certain team that your school has trouble with, regardless of record?

I know Clemson always seems to have a tough time against Florida State and Virginia. I can understand FSU, but we need to find a way to beat UVA if we meet again in the ACC Tourney.

I also found out on one of the Clemson baseball broadcasts about the new format of the ACC Tourney.

only 8 of the 12 teams in the ACC will play in the tournament. The top 2 teams from each divison (based on conf. record), will be in the tournament. the other 4 teams will be determined on conf. record, regardless of division.

I think the tourney teams will be Georgia Tech, Florida State, Clemson, Miami, North Carolina, Virginia, N.C. State, and Wake Forest.

I believe we went 3-2 in the Tourney last year. I believe we beat NC State, Miami, and UNC. I would have to check on it. I really think Jack Leggett deserves to win a title. He produces MLB talent. Players like Kris Benson and Khalil Greene are outstanding Tigers playing well in the major leagues. I wish Pittsburgh would have kept Benson, I loved that the Buccos had a Clemson Tiger. I went to see him play Atlanta up at old Three Rivers Stadium. He pitched a 2-0 shutout of Atlanta. My dad and I kept yelling from behind home plate "GO CLEMSON".

A guy that I believe will be a major league talent for the Tigers is 2B Taylor Harbin.

Another thing I noticed, is that the fall off from our weekend pitchers and mid week guys, is very noticable. Our big 3 (Stephen Faris, Josh Cribb, and Jason Berken) are so much better than our mid week guys. I think we are screwed if 1 of the 3 goes down.

Right now, I'd say UNC is a better team than Miami.

That said, I doubt we get 4 into Omaha. Two is more likely, three at the very most. We're about to hit the part of the season where a lot of the ACC teams will shake out, which will mean the difference between hosting a super and visiting.

There is plenty of good ball played elsewhere...Nebraska, Rice, etc. The regionals & supers won't be set up to give the ACC enough of an advantage to get 4 in, despite FSU's Charlie Carr being on the committee (this is the same dickhead that stuck Texas in our Super a few years back, when both teams should have been hosting).

Big 10-2 win over the Wahoos last night at Doak to open the series. Brackman pitched, had 10 strikeouts, gave up three hits and two runs through 6, not a bad night. A classic Mike Martin pissing. There is NO coach out there who can systematically destroy the confidence of his team more completely than Martin. Most people would thing with their starter having pitched 8 innings and over 90 pitches, that you immediately go to you closer, but not Martin. Better to let his floppy arm get you in trouble, then bring in a guy with a bad situation behind him.

Oh well. Expect the sweep completion today.

I posted on Warcant that I thought the games would come down to who had the best fielding and hitting, not pitching. Both teams have pitched extremely well.

I'm curious as to how the coach had a role in the team self-destructing defensively? I'd blame him if UNC had loaded the bases on legitimate hits, but all of our baserunners could have easily been the out to end the game had the defense not committed errors.

Obviously he didn't 'call' the errors. What he did do, and has a long history of doing, is leaving a pitcher in there too long. This has a tendency to put your defense on edge, cause they - like everyone else in the stadium except Mike Martin - see that the pitcher is done and they know they need to be extra careful because of it. That causes tightness which inevitably leads to errors. Want proof? The same thing happened two years ago at UNC in the sunday game, and also last year at GaTech.

We're good for at least two or three games like that because Martin is a terrible pitching manager.

What really bugs me is that we had Travis Burge in the pen with Tucker. Burge is a lefty and a better pitcher than Tucker, but rather than go with the significantly different look of a lefty, he stuck with a righty and you know the results.

Up to the UNC series and now, I had hopes that maybe this would be the team to get to Omaha, but I can tell this is still a Mike Martin coached team. We can pound on cupcakes all day, but face even a semi-decent (and make no bones about it, Miami is only semi-decent this year) team, and Mike Martin gets pucker-butt worse than Bobb Bowden ever has. Miller is a beast on the mound, only gave up 5 hits in almost the entire game; Heels didn't bring in their reliever till about halfway through the top of the 9th. Brackman did alright, but the 4 run 4th for UNC really killed State's chances, I knew it would be near impossible for State to score more than 5 runs on Miller.

Anyways, great crowd, lots of State people in attendance, well over capacity at 3600+ in Boshamer. I think State's bats can take over tomorrow and Sunday as long as the pitching holds up. Surkamp will start, getting a lefty out there will give the Heels a different look.

FSU got pounded by GT 15-8 on Friday night, after leading 6-0. Mike Martin wouldn't recognize a dead pitching arm if it was rammed up his ass. Bryan Henry was fading in the 4th fast, and rather than do the sensible thing and send someone to the pen to warm up, he left him in.....to walk in a run. Then he sent someone down and did a short stall, only to have Henry give up a grand slam on the next batter. THEN Martin brings in the new pitcher.....pretty much cold, since his dumb ass didn't have him warming up when Henry showed signs - signs that everyone else in the stadium saw - of losing his control.

Tech scored 8 in that inning. There is no coach more capable of destroying the confidence of his team than Mike Martin.

Clemson is currently 21-6, UNC is 19-8. Both teams have one conference series left, vs Wake and BC respectively. Clemson has the more challenging opponent of the two. If Clemson goes 0-3 and UNC goes 3-0, then UNC would be on top with a record of 22-8 to 21-9. Provided that we get by Wake, I am not liking our probable match up with Ga Tech in the second round. They always seem to have our number and they really hammered us this year.

We're heading over tomorrow. 10am really sucks...but it gets it over with I suppose. We haven't faced UVa, but they're a good squad, so it'll be interesting. Both of the win-loss scenarios for the second round are OK.

My hotel is supposed to have internet, so I'll be bringing my laptop and I'll try to post some pictures from the stadium.

FSU's for sure. That'll end in time for lunching, so we'll head back to the tailgate to grill up some food, then probably head back for the later games...then it's off to Maggiano's for hella good food.

Well FSU showed again why passive baseball doesn't win championships. I just can't even begin to list the coaching mistakes in this one. But I am pretty sick of watching our guys strike out with the bat still on their shoulders.

Anyway, lost game 1 6-2, even though UVa was by no means dominating.

NCSU did us no favors by defeating UNC in game 2 by a score of 9-3 (I think). So, we'll again be facing a good pitcher with a passive offense...which should spell 0-2-Q.

Game three should be just about starting if it hasn't already.

I watched some of the FSU-UVA game (5th-7th innings) on theacc.com, tough break for FSU. I didn't get to see any of the Pack's game, but apparently they brought it, especially Gib Hobson. State took the series from UVA pretty easily in Raleigh this year so I feel good about our chances tomorrow.

GT won a squeaker v. Miami 2-1, Clemson blasted Wake 13-1. So tomorrow's matchups are:

Loser's Bracket:
#6 Florida State v. #2 UNC @ 10 AM
#5 Miami v. #8 Wake @ 1 PM
(Whoever loses goes home)
Winner's Bracket:
#7 NC State v. #3 Virginia @ 4 PM
#4 Georgia Tech v. #1 Clemson @ 7 PM

So come on Wake, FSU, and GT. Well, and of course my Wolfpack.

Looks like McConnell will get the start for State tomorrow, with Thompson coming on for Virginia. I hope Brackman being out doesn't hurt our chances at a title too much.

Shocker here folks, a walkoff homerun by FSU keeps the #6 seeded Seminoles in the tournament while #2 UNC is sent home after losing two straight games. And Miami just beat Wake 4-1, so the 8th seeded Deacs are sent packing too.

NC State-Virginia up next!

We just got back. We gave our second session tickets to friends. We wanted to watch the UVa-NCSU game, but we're exhausted...two days of getting to the park at 8am has taken its toll...well, that and the oppressive heat. Way, way hotter than last year.

UNC's coach screwed them leaving their pitcher in too long...a page out of Mike Martin's book. When Guinn hit the grand slam, it really took the wind out of UNC's sails, despite the run they got in the next inning to tie it back up.

Luke Tucker pitched lights out. 19 of 20 pitches thrown for strikes.

UNC goes 0-2 and BBQ for the second straight year. Pretty unfathomable.

Oh I don't consider us out of the woods yet. I just know that the win last night was huge. The majority of the teams that Clemson has played during their streak have been the weaker teams in the ACC. Oh...the big news I heard was that next year the ACC may try the same format as the Big-12, which I think is two brackets of four teams, each playing round-robin. That would giv eevery team in the tournament a guaranteed 3 games, with the team with the best record in each bracket going on to the title. I don't know how they resolve ties in the format...mebbe a big12 guy can help out.

Anyway, they want to do it to boost attendance even more, though I think this year's tally will be higher than last years with FSU making it as far as we did. They want to make it more justifiable for the farther teams to travel.

A two team tie is resolved by head to head match-up. That's seems pretty obvious. In a three way tie, the highest seed of the tied teams wins the division. The highest seed tie breaker bothers me, but it didn't come in to play in the Big 12 this year, and if you just win your games, you won't have to worry about it.

Oh well, coming up short again but our pitching wasn't deep enough to hold off Clemson. If Mangini had had his head on straight, it may have been closer, but just not enough left in the tank for that game.

Now off to Austin for our regional. State is peaking at the right time after a late-season slump, so hopefully they carry that out west.

I agree the ACC got screwed as well. There is no way that Miss St should be in. If you aren't good enough to play for your conference championship, then you shouldn't be allowed to play for the National Championship. Wake definitely deserved it over MSU. It also gives MSU an unfair advantage with pitching. Teams like NS State, Clemson, and etc.. that have to use their pitchers to get through conference tournaments and are going to have tired arms. Miss St can rest up and get ready and not have to worry about tired arms. Oh well, that is enough of a rant for the day.
