Alright, so after 3 years at Colgate which featured back-to-back NCAA tourney appearances (and silent first round defeats), I accept a job offer at San Diego, dead last in the WCC last year. I am in my first year and have somehow managed to land a 5-star 7 footer and 3 4-star players during the early signing period. The best recruits I managed to nab at Colgate were 3-star players, and while San Diego is in the WCC it is not Gonzaga, it does not have a national reputation. I'm not complaining though, because it sure as hell will make rebuilding San Diego a lot easier. Has anyone else had this happen to them after taking up a mid-major job?

I bet the combination of you being an A+ in recruiting and being at a more prestigious school is what got you those players.

My recruiting is merely a "B"

It's in California, which i'm pretty sure has the best recruits.

My recruits are all from Cali. Apparently they don't all flock to UCLA, USC, or some other Pac-10 school, let alone Gonzaga.

Why would anyone better than 3* want to go to Colgate?

Well, when you're in a fertile recruiting area (New York) then there are plenty of leftover 3-star players to ring in to your program.

That just means the recruiting is rediculous. But that's something I accept

Well, just to clarify, I didn't land a 3-star kid until after my 2nd season at Colgate in which I advanced to the Big Dance. It does seem though that it gets a lot easier for lesser schools to recruit 3 and 4-star kids as the years go by.
