Does anyone want to help me out, and maybe lots of other Utopians by making a set of skills tutorial threads?
I want to start with shooting, inside and outside. Tell us how you do it, and how to improve. Go to it Utopia!

Well this is how I go about shooting.
Outside shooting
The first fundamental coaches teach players in real life is to release your jumpshot at the top of your jump. The video game is no exception.
- A quick note is that I use the Xbox version, so PS2 players might need to switch the buttons but the principles are the same.
- On Xbox I use the X button for jumpshots and 3 point shots. One can use the right stick but I find it inaccurate and a pain. If you're great with the shotstick then more power to you, no need to change.
-When I take a 3 or jumper I look at my players feet when I shoot the ball. The reason is that the feet will let you know that your player is rising, also as the players comes down from his jump so will his feet.
- So what I do is when I take a shot I press X and hold while looking at the feet. I'll eventually see my player's feet rise as high as it can. That lets me know he's at the top of his jump and thats when I release X for the jumpshot. Pretty simple.
Inside Shooting
I call the right stick my layup/dunk stick. If one is driving down the lane and their player can dunk one has options.
- What I'll do is drive the lane and when I'm about halfway down the lane I'll hold the right stick and flick the right stick
UP: This will do a power jam, more effective for your big men down low. Although finesse small forwards and guards can do this too. Basically any player that can dunk should be able to use this move.
RIGHT: A finesse type of dunk. Usually a one handed slam or something else depending on the type of player you have. You can try this with big men but if they are missing alot of slams thats your cue to only use UP with your big men.
LEFT: Same as the right but another set of fancy dunks.
DOWN: A reverse slamdunk or windmill jam. I would only do this if I'm the only one down court. I wouldn't try this in traffic.
Layups
When going for a layup just flick the stick without the right trigger.
UP: will do a basic layup where ever your guy is
RIGHT: will cause your guy to try to layup to the right side of the hoop.
LEFT: will cause your guy to try to layup to the left side of the hoop.
DOWN: never bother to use it, you tell me. [laugh]
If your guy can't dunk that means he can only do layups. If you attempt to dunk when your guy can't it will cause him to do the double pump shot. Alot of times this is a miss. So if your guy can't dunk then just lay off the right trigger and just flick the stick as noted above.
Posting UP
On Xbox your post player gets near his man and you press the left trigger. This will have your man back down the opposition. Once he begins to back down you can let go of the left trigger, as your player will still be engaged.
If you're backing your man down you want to get within 3 or 4 feet, and flick the right stick. The four directions will give you different moves
UP: Does a hook shot.
RIGHT/LEFT: Does a bunch of Hakeem Olajuwan "dream shakes"
DOWN: Does a fadeaway shot.
-----------------------------------------------
Great now you know what your main options are. The trick is knowing how to use all this knowledge.
Getting open for outside shots
---------------------------------------------
What I like to do is have the quick pick and roll mapped to "DOWN" on the D-Pad. You can map it wherever you want, doesn't matter, just have it mapped.
-What I like to do is have my best 3 point shooter call for a pick. My big man then sets a nice pick. I then use him as a screen to shoot the bomb.
-Against Zones I like to use icon passing. But first I'll have 2-3 Zone buster mapped. I'll call that play against most zones if I want to shoot it down. I'll call the play and then bring up icon passing with black button.
My SG/SF's are usually marked B or X. They usually hang around the wings. Most 2-3 zones leave the corners somewhat open. So I'll bring the icons up and then press "B" while moving the left stick up. This will lead my player to the corner. As soon as he gets the ball I press X to shoot, again looking at the feet.
The key is learning to use icon passing and leading your player to spots where he can catch and shoot. It takes practice but after awhile this will become 2nd nature.
-Also when driving if I see my man is backing off I'll pull up for the 10-12 foot jumper. Sometimes its good to have a middle game.
Other tips
If you notice that in the post that your big man isn't backing the other guy down theres a reason for that. The opposing big man has decided he's going to body you up at all costs. This exposes him to the "Spin move"
To do a spin move we're assuming you've already started to back down your man (With the L trigger).
If your opponent is putting a body on you hold down the R trigger. Once you do that keep holding the right trigger and move your left stick in a circle. You'll see your big man spin and you can use this to get free and lay it in or slam it home.
-On pick and rolls you can first have your man set the pick. If you use the pick to drive the CPU will sometimes have both men locking on to you. They forget about the bigman setting the pick. If you stop driving and wait for a bit you'll see your big man either standing still or rolling. Either way press the lead pass button (B) while pressing up on the left stick. This will lead your picker to the basket for a slam, layup or foul call.
-Oh goes without saying but move the ball. This game really doesn't reward Kobe Bryants. If you go one on one too much your offense will get stagnant and you won't go far.
I know this has been alot, but if you only remember two things out of this whole long post remember this!
Use the X button for jumpshots and look at your FEET!
Master the art of lead passing. Either with the lead pass button or the icon passing. Your offense will thank you
Hope this helps. [cool]
EDIT: I strongly recommend using the Drive Cam angle in this game with "Key Zoom" turned Off. This will give you the best view of the court. Its nearly the same view one uses in real life when they play basketball. It also will make the advice of looking at ones feet make a whole lot more sense. I imagine its hard to look at feet in the other camera modes. But in Drive Cam its very easy.

Use the X button for jumpshots and look at your FEET!
I started out using the X button for jumpshots but I found that it didn't work most of the time when I wanted to do a quick catch and shoot. Too many times I'd have a guy wide open behind the 3 point line, I'd pass the ball to him and press X to shoot and he would just stand there, and by the time I could get a shot up the defense would be all over me. Then I tried using the shot stick and I was able to get the shots off much more quickly and I've had a lot more success with it. I've only been playing the game for a couple weeks though, so I'm sure you know a hell of a lot more about it than I do. Maybe I was doing something wrong.

Whatever works best for you. If the shot stick works better for you I would stick with that.
For me the X button works best. But for others it will be the shot stick.
Sometimes too my players will get the ball and not shoot right away. Doesn't happen too often for me, but it does happen. So you weren't doing anything wrong.
Its just after a season I realized the shot stick wasn't working for me on jumpshots so I switched to X.
People just got to try out both and stick with whatever works best.
As long as the ball gets into the basket, thats all that matters.
