I'm new to the whole dynasty thing, but I'm thinking I will have enough free-time next semester to keep this thing going. I wanted to do a program I was fairly familiar with, but challenging, so I picked Duke. I will be using my own set of sliders on All-American, 6 or 7 minute quarters, I haven't decided quite yet. Kind of a basic setup, with recaps, box scores, etc, plus some opinion pieces from the Durham Herald-Sun analyzing the Duke football program.

I will be restricting recruiting to only recruiting kids with discipline of good or excellent. I will also limit myself to recruiting from pipeline and bordering states only until reaching a four-star level. Plus a sliding scale for recruiting:

1* Prestige - No more than 4 three-star recruits, two and one star unlimited
2* Prestige - No more than 8 three-star recruits, two and one star unlimited
3* Presitge - No more than 3 four-star recruits, three and lower unlimited
4* Prestige - No more than 6 four-star recruits, three and lower unlimited
5*/6* Presitge - No more than 2 five-star recruits, 8 four-star recruits, all others unlimited

Now, story time:

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d18/swlpack/YohCenter.jpg

Ted Roof gazed out of his office window in the Yoh Football Center down at Wallace Wade Stadium, as field managment laid down a fresh coat of blue on the letters spelling out "DUKE" in both endzones. The 2004 season had been one of missed opportunities, with close losses to Wake Forest, UConn, Navy and Georgia Tech, and so far, Roof's record had been no different than that of Carl Franks or Fred Goldsmith.

But 2005 was a new year, and with that new promise for a program with a storied past of Rose Bowl appearances and Southern Conference and ACC Championships to acheive respectability in a league that was now garnered as one of the best in the nation. Roof just hoped he could acheive that before the AD decided to pull the plug on him just as Franks and Goldsmith had gone. And that was exactly what was staring Roof in the face. After 14 games as Duke's Head Coach, AD Jim Alleva had just sent over a hand-written note, delivering the ultimatum that Roof had just three more seasons to get the Blue Devils back to a winning season and in a bowl, or the big money folks were going to have him ousted. So entering his second full season in Durham, with the cloud of joblessness hanging over his head, Ted Roof leads the charge to bring back Duke football.

So far so good. I see you are sticking with Roof as the coach. It is going to be kind of hard for you to play against NC State, but roll with it. I know a couple guys on the team up there. Chris Davis, who I played against in baseball and football, Jabari Marshall, who I ran track against, and Rodney Ezzard, who was my high school QB. Good luck and nice to have you here.

^ Yeah, it is going to be tough playing the Pack, but that will be only every couple of years. I guess this is going to be more of a Ted Roof tracker but I haven't gotten to thinking about what I would do if offered a better job, etc. Thanks for reading, I'll have the ECU Preview up tonight and a recap tomorrow probably.

Hey! Nice to see you around these parts. You're schedule looks kind of sort of tough, I'm sure you'll pull out a few good surprise victories. But...hmmm...I see you at the most going 5-6 (maybe 6-5). Good luck!

Fighting, I would take 5 wins in a heartbeat. Right now I am saying three is the most likely scenario. The Coastal Division is tough on the game, no question.

Fielding, I'll stick with it...hopefully. The only thing that will keep me from keeping this thing going would be too much work for school, but with my schedule for next semester I'm thinking that won't be a problem. Hopefully my recruiting restrictions will keep things interesting.

Pre-Game Analysis:

When the Blue Devils have the ball: This will be a showdown between RB Cedric Dargan and a talented linebacking corps led by ECU Senior Chris Moore. Establishing the running game and the ability to use play-action fakes may be the only way that QB Mike Schneider will be able to pass on a very talented ECU secondary.

When the Pirates have the ball: The running game will also determine the fate of the Pirates, as starting QB Kort Shankweiler is not game experienced. It will be up to RB Chris Johnson to get past the steady front four of Duke, anchored by defensive end Phillip Alexander.

Key to the game: Field position will play a huge role in this one. Star ECU Punter Ryan Dougherty is suspended for this game, leaving ECU down one rung in this battle. The Blue Devils have to use this unexpected advantage if they want to start 2005 off right.

Nice pregame. Too bad there isn't much interest from those guys. I'd focus on only the guys who have Duke in the top five already.

Very nice start. You seem to be well off in the offensive skill positions, but that O-Line looks atrocious. The defense also has some holes in it. Still, I'm sure you can pull out some good wins.

Best of luck, man.

Career Day for Johnson Leads to Pirate Victory, 45-28
345 yards on the ground, 6 total TDs, as Johnson leads ECU past Duke

The clock read :31 when Mike Schneider threw his final pass into the arms of Pirate cornerback Erode Jean. Thirty-one was also the number of unanswered points that ECU hung on the Blue Devils, en route to a 45-28 win in Greenville.

The game started out quickly for ECU, with RB Chris Johnson busting off two runs on a three-play drive, and scoring on a 26-yarder to go up 7-0 on Duke just 44 seconds into the first quarter. A fumble on Duke's first drive by RB Justin Boyle gave ECU the ball on the Blue Devil 25. Johnson scored on the next play on the ground, giving the Pirates a 14-0 lead.

However, on the next series, Duke put together a drive that ground nearly 5 minutes off of the clock, with QB Mike Schneider connecting with FB Malcolm Ruff for a TD early in the second quarter. The Duke defense buckled down on Johnson, forcing an ECU punt. RB Cedric Dargan finally showed up, breaking off runs of 15 and 21 yards on a 2:12 minute drive that ended in a 6 yard TD run for Ruff and tied the score at 14 with 1:33 remaining. On the second play of the ensuing drive for the Pirates, Johnson showed his speed again, breaking off a 55 yard run down to the Duke 25. On the next play, Duke LB Codey Lowe picked off Kort Shankweiler's pass, returning it to the Duke 29. A 29 yard strike from Schneider to TE Ben Patrick, followed by a 15 yard run by Dargan on a 3rd and 10, setup another Duke TD with three seconds remaining in the half, as Schneider hit Patrick again for 5 yards and 6 points.

Halftime: Duke 21, East Carolina 14

The second half started much the way the first had ended, with Duke putting together a sustained drive, including runs of 10 and 14 yards for Dargan. On a third down play inside the Pirates five-yard line, Cedric Dargan was stopped short of the goalline, but a facemask by ECU LB Chris Moore gave the Blue Devils a first down on the one. Dargan made the score 28-14 on the next play with a one yard-TD run.

However, the scoring would end for Duke here. After containing RB Chris Johnson for much of the second quarter, the Duke defense broke down in the third, giving up two huge rushing touchdowns of 66 and 79 yards to the prolific runner and allowing the Pirates to tie the game at 28 heading into the 4th quarter.

Things appeared to be turning around for the Blue Devils when ECU WR Aundrae Allison fumbled on the Duke 29 yard-line, where CB John Talley picked it up and rumbled into ECU territory. However, the ECU defense held, forcing a punt. Passes by Shankweiler of 25 and 15 yards helped push the Pirate offense down inside the Duke 20, where Johnson took over again, scoring his fifth TD of the day to put the Pirates up 35-28 with 3:05 remaining.

Another stop and forced punt by the ECU defense then spelled the demise of Duke's chances, as Chris Johnson returned it 64 yards for the score. QB Mike Schneider failed to complete a pass in the next four plays, and turned the ball over on the Duke 12. The Duke defense held, forcing an ECU field goal with 1:17 left in the game, but it was too little too late. The Schneider interception with 31 seconds left sealed the deal and a Pirate victory to open 2005.

Pre-Game Analysis:

When the Blue Devils have the ball: Duke struggled to consistantly establish the run against East Carolina and it cost them, only rushing for 126 yards and losing. Duke's offense cannot be put into a situation where they are down so far they have to start throwing, or Mike Schneider becomes ineffective as a passer. The key will be establishing long drives, which will be very tough against one of the top defenses in the nation.

When the Hokies have the ball: Duke has to do better than last week, where they gave up 338 yards on the ground, mostly to ECU RB Chris Johnson. In order to win this week, the Blue Devils need to force Marcus Vick to throw it, while working on containing runners and keeping them bottled up inside the pocket. This will be tough to do with the all-star backfield of Imoh, Humes, and Vick for the Hokies.

Key to the Game: Time of possession. If the Blue Devils can keep Vick and the Hokie ground game on the sideline, Duke has a chance to win.

Game Notes:
- Starting LE Eli Nichols will not play the first half of the Duke-VT game for violating team academic policy, Coach Ted Roof stated today in a press release to the media.

Pace Kicks Hokies to Victory, 19-7
In a closer-than-expected struggle, Pace's 4 field goals stave off Blue Devils

Who saw this one coming? After giving up 45 points and over 300 yards on the ground last week to ECU, the Duke defense held Virginia Tech to just 180 yards of total offense, but without an offense of their own, the Blue Devils were defeated 19-7.

On the opening drive, Duke had their first of many missed opportunities, when SS Adrian Aye-Darko picked off QB Marcus Vick at the VT 25. Aye-Darko had the ball knocked loose just four yards into his interception return, however, and the Hokies recovered. However, the VT offense continued to struggle, with the exception of a 21 yard run by Vick, but got just enough to setup a 41-yard field goal by Brandon Pace with 2:50 left in the first quarter. Just a few plays later on the Blue Devils next drive, starting QB Mike Schneider was hit hard and knocked out for the rest of the game. Backup QB Gene Delle Donne was then charged with leading the offense for the rest of the game.

Two back to back failed drives by the Blue Devils and Hokies put the ball back into Duke's hands early in the second quarter. However, on a bad throw by Delle Donne, CB D.J. Parker picked off the pass, giving the Hokies the ball on the Duke 23. The Duke defense stood tall, with DT Casey Camero getting one of Duke's 4 sacks on Marcus Vick, forcing another Brandon Pace field goal from 42 yards out, giving the Hokies a 6-0 lead.

The only scoring drive by the Blue Devils was sparked on the next play by a 48-yard kickoff return by CB John Talley, setting up a drive that would be capped off with a 1-yard touchdown run by RB Cedric Dargan with 1:29 left in the half. Another big defensive stop with 46 seconds left had the Blue Devils thinking offense, however a fumble on the punt return by Talley gave the Blue Devils the ball back, setting up another Pace field goal from 42 yards to give VT the 9-7 lead going into the half. However, the Blue Devils defense had held the Hokies to just 86 yards of offense in the half.

Halftime: Virginia Tech 9, Duke 7

The third quarter opened with another failed drive by Duke. Perhaps the only defensive breakdown of the game for the Blue Devils came on Virginia Tech's ensuing drive, where Marcus Vick scrambled for 57 yards and a touchdown, putting VT up 16-7 early in the third. The Duke offense battled back however, and early in the fourth quarter, they had driven deep into Hokie territory. On a 4th and 1, Coach Ted Roof opted to let K Joe Surgan try a 44-yard field goal that would have made the game 16-10, but Surgan missed wide-right, and the Hokies took over again.

The next three drives were all three-and-outs for Duke and VT. Duke took over with 1:35 left on their own 20, but could do nothing offensively, and turned the ball over on downs. Pace knocked in his final field goal from 29 yards away with 31 seconds left to seal a Hokie victory in Durham.

^ Yep, I'm starting to get the hang of this team and how I need to do things. Running zone defense out of the 4-3, with the occasional blitz, I was able to neutralize Vick and the running game. If Schneider hadn't been hurt, this one might have gone differently. All things considered, I can't be too upset.

Pre-Game Analysis:

When the Blue Devils have the ball: As with all season, the key will be establishing the run, which will depend on getting past the speedy linebackers that the Mountaineers have, led by senior Zodd Kelly.

When the Mountaineers have the ball: Duke needs to mimic their performance against Virginia Tech this week and clamp down on prolific Appy State runner Kevin Richardson.

Key to the Game: Success in the passing game. Mike Schneider and Gene Delle Donne have not put up good completion percentages yet this season, both under 50% in the two games that have been played. With Schneider returning after being injured last week against Virginia Tech, the passing game needs to build confidence this week to carry over to conference play.

Pre-Game Analysis:

When the Blue Devils have the ball: Virginia's defense is excellent, headed by a hungry linebacking core led by Ahmad Brooks. The offensive line is going to have to pick up blitzes in order to move the ball through the air or on the ground.

When the Cavaliers have the ball: Another week, another need to clamp down on the running game. The past two contests for the Blue Devils have shown that their secondary is good enough to hold off a passing attack, but that all hinges on stopping the run.

Key to the Game: Contain Hagans. As with Marcus Vick, Marques Hagans is a quick runner, and no doubt UVA will try to use his speed to beat the Duke linebackers and defensive line.

Tough defensive play by Virginia ends upset bid

"Heartbreaking," said Duke Head Coach Ted Roof after the 30-10 loss to #10 Virginia. "We were so close there for a minute, but that is the way that college football goes, you lose momentum and you are dead in the water." Roof was referring to the sequence of events that began with a John Talley interception of Marque Hagans and driving down to the UVA 7 with a chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter to a 93-yard interception return for a touchdown by Phillip Brown that put the game out of reach for Duke.

The first half was dominated by three and outs, as both the UVA and Duke defenses held stout. UVA's Connor Hughes struck first with a 21 yard field goal at the 2:12 mark of the first quarter. On the Wahoos' next drive, Wali Lundy connected with wideout Fontel Mines for a 22 yard touchdown to put UVA up 10-0. On Virginia's next drive though, John Talley forced Lundy to fumble on the UVA 14 yard-line, setting up a Malcolm Ruff touchdown run.

Halftime: Virginia 10, Duke 7

The Hoos struck early in the third quarter, with Hagans connecting with Deyon Williams for a 25 yard touchdown to go up 17-7. Duke answered, with runs of 16 and 11 by Justin Boyle and Cedric Dargan respectively, leading to a 32 field-goal by Joe Surgan to make the score 17-10 with 2:01 left in the third quarter. Then came the set of events starting with Talley's interception and the subsequent score by UVA's Brown that put Virginia up 24-10. Two more interceptions by QB Mike Schneider setup two Connor Hughes field goals, to put the final score at 30-10, leaving the Cavaliers undefeated still and sending Duke to 1-3 on the season.

Pre-Game Analysis:

When the Blue Devils have the ball: Duke has to limit turnovers. With 4 last week against Virginia, the Blue Devils sit at 87th in the nation in turnover margin. QB Mike Schneider needs to work on making good passes and good throw-aways when no one is open.

When the Midshipmen have the ball: Duke's run defense is ranked 117th in the nation, giving up an average of 173.2 yards a game. Unless Duke buckles down on the ground, the option attack of Paul Johnson's Navy team will destory the Blue Devils.

Key to the Game: Who can run the ball better. On drives where Duke has scored points, they have ran the ball over 50% of the time. This doesn't work if Cedric Dargan and Justin Boyle can't get anything going on the ground though. Whoever has the better running attack will win this game.

Game Notes:
- RB Cedric Dargan will not play the first two quarters of the game against Navy due to unspecified team rules violations.

Duke sinks Navy, 42-21
Blue Devils score 42 unanswered, improve to 2-3

It seemed that the Duke football team was still hungover Saturday from last week's so-close-but-so-far-away loss to the Virginia Cavaliers. The Duke defense could not stop Navy's rushing attack in the first half, giving up two running touchdowns to the Midshipmen by the 1:51 mark of the first half. The offense, which to that point had already fumbled on their 5th play from scrimmage, looked anemic and tired. That was when Coach Ted Roof stalked down to his field general Mike Schneider and gave him a "pep talk". "I told Mike that he had to make something happen. He need to light a fire under the butt of this offense or we were going to lose this game," said Coach Roof in post-game comments. And jump start the offense Schneider did, driving the Blue Devils down the lenght of the field with passes of 34, 23, and 9 yards, the last, a touchdown strike to Jomar Wright for 6 with 36 seconds left in the half.

Halftime: Navy 14, Duke 7

From that point on, it was all Duke. The midshipmen did not cross mid-field again until a late 4th quarter drive, whereas their Duke counterparts put up 21 points in the third quarter alone. Both Schneider and RB Cedric Dargan found the endzone on runs in the 3rd quarter, putting the Blue Devils up 28-14. After another stand by the Duke defense, who held Navy's offense to just 125 yards on the ground, Schneider connected with Wright again over the middle, who took the ball 55 yards for the death knell score, putting Duke up 35-14 going into the fourth. A fumble by Navy QB Lamar Owens gave Duke the ball on the Navy 26, and two plays later Justin Boyle ran it in for 6 more. The final Duke score came on an impressive 53 yard punt return for a TD by CB John Talley. A late fumble by third-string RB Ronnie Drummer setup the garbage time TD by Navy to make the final 42-21, with the second string for Duke getting half a quarter of playing time.

Pre-Game Analysis:

When the Blue Devils have the ball: Burn the clock. The Miami offense loves to run the ball, and will at length with Tyrone Moss. If Duke can control the clock, then they have a chance.

When the Hurricanes have the ball: Neutralize Miami's speed by zoning. The only way to keep the break-away speed of the Miami offense out-of-play is to keep everything in front of the defense.

Key to the Game: Turnovers. Duke already killed their chances of an upset in the Virginia game with turnovers, and they must hold on to the football in order to win this game.

Miami holds off pesky Devils, 49-37
Six turnovers by Duke spell doom for upset of #4 Canes

On a sunny afternoon in Miami, a dark cloud almost spoiled the perfect day in southern Florida, and that could's name is Duke. The fourth-ranked Hurricanes jumped out to a huge lead early, going up 28-0 in the first quarter. Two of the scores were direct results of miscues by Duke QB Mike Schneider, who threw an interception and fumbled the ball in the first quarter. A punt return for a touchdown Kelly Jennings gave Miami their fourth score at just the 2:11 mark of the first quarter. Schneider struck back with passes of 21, 32, 21, and finally a 9-yard touchdown strike to WR Ronnie Elliott, bringing the score to 28-7 just before the end of the quarter.

The turnover margin swung in the second quarter, with CB John Talley picking off Miami's Kyle Wright and rumbling for a 37 yard touchdown to bring the Blue Devils within 14 of the Canes. Two more Schneider interceptions were quickly turned into Wright touchdown connnections to Lance Leggett and Ryan Moore, putting the Canes up 42-14. A quick drive by Duke gave Joe Surgan the opportunity to make the score 42-17 as the half ended.

Halftime: Miami 42, Duke 17

Surgan's field goal was the beginning of a 23 point scoring run for the Blue Devils, including another Schneider to Elliott touchdown at the 3:20 mark in the 3rd quarter. CB Deonto McCormick picked off another Kyle Wright pass at the 1:22 mark of the third, returning it 67 yards for the touchdown and bringing Duke within 11 points of the Canes. However, this is as close as they would come, as Jennings returned yet another punt for a touchdown with 3:22 remaining in the fourth quarter that put an end to Duke's chances. A late score and failed two-point conversion was the last scoring of this shootout, one that Coach Ted Roof came away with mixed feelings: "Our guys played hard, obviously when you turn the ball over six times it is hard to win, but our guys really rallied there down 28 and made it a ball game. This wasn't a win, but definately something to build on."

When the Blue Devils have the ball: Exploit Georgia Tech's secondary. This is by far the weakest part of the Yellow Jacket's defense, and with the blitzing schemes that GT Defensive Coordinator Jon Tenuta likes to run, it will be crucial for Mike Schneider to make smart decisions in the passing game.

When the Yellow Jackets have the ball: Control Calvin Johnson. CB John Talley must keep Johnson, who is QB Reggie Ball's favorite target, under control in this game. Duke cannot give up the big play as they did against Miami, or they my lose just as big as they did to the Canes.

Key to the Game: Dargan v. Daniels. While the defenses in this game may be the key matchup, the outcome may be determined by which of these two backs has the better game.

Duke picks off Georgia Tech, upsets 6th ranked Yellow Jackets 19-13
Four Reggie Ball interceptions lead to historic win over Top-10 Georgia Tech

Durham - Some would characterize Duke's 19-13 win over #6 Georgia Tech as an ugly game, with both defenses playing stingy and five total turnovers. But to Coach Ted Roof, it was, in his words, "Beautiful." With the Duke defense picking off veteran Tech QB Reggie Ball four times, and holding the Yellow Jackets to just 47 yards in the first half, the Blue Devils won their biggest game of the past 20 years, if not longer. The first scoring of the game came on a Codey Lowe interception return for a 7-yard TD at the 3:05 mark of the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets would not cross mid-field the entire first half. Duke put together two slow, methodical drives in the second quarter that both resulted in Joe Surgan field goals, giving the Blue Devils a 13-0 lead with 1:48 before halftime. Another Ball interception, this time picked by SS Adrian Aye-Darko setup the third field goal of the half for Surgan with 25 seconds left before the half. The halftime stats were ugly, with Georgia Tech only gaining 47 offensive yards, and the Blue Devils just 112.

Halftime: Duke 16, Georgia Tech 0

Mid-way through the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets finally arrived into Duke territory, but on a fourth and long from the Duke 35, Coach Chan Gailey chose to punt rather than go for it. Georgia Tech would not see the ball again until the 5:28 mark of the 4th quarter, where Lowe intercepted his second Reggie Ball pass of the game at the Georgia Tech 30. However, RB Justin Boyle gave the Yellow Jackets the ball back on the next play, and Reggie Ball got hot with passes of 15 and 16 yards to WR Calvin Johnson and TE Michael Matthews to lead to a score with 3:16 left in the game. Tech failed the two-point conversion, leaving the score at 16-6, and also failed to recover the onside kick. The Tech defense held, forcing a Duke punt, but Ball threw another interception at the GT 16 yard-line with just 1:24 left in the game to CB Jabari Marshall. This setup Surgan's final field goal of the game with 47 seconds left that made the score 19-6. The Duke defense did play tired on the final drive, giving Ball a TD connection with is TE Matthews again with 8 seconds left, but the Yellow Jackets failed to recover another onside kick and the game ended in Duke victory.

When the Blue Devils have the ball: Run the clock. This strategy, which Ted Roof has been attempting all season, finally worked against then-#6 Georgia Tech last week. The best way to keep FSU from winning is to, obviously, prevent them from scoring.

When the Seminoles have the ball: Stop the run. QB Drew Weatherford is unproven. If Duke can force him to throw, the defense has proved they can intercept the ball, picking off QBs better than Weatherford all season including Reggie Ball four times last week.

Key to the Game: Turnovers. This has been the theme for Duke this year. When the turnover margin has favored Duke, they are 3-0. Winning this battle will go a long way towards winning the game for the Blue Devils.

Second half rally not enough for Devils, fall to #5 Florida State 34-20
Duke comes within 7 in the fourth, but 'Noles hold off Schneider's passing attack

Durham - The largest crowd of Duke blue in some time crowded Wallace Wade Stadium to watch what became a competitive game between the fifth-ranked Seminoles of Florida State and Duke, but also saw their Devils fall just short. Despite the heroic efforts of QB Mike Schneider, who had a decent day passing with 286 yards through the air, Duke could not pull off their second straight upset of a top-ten team in Durham.

The game started with a bang for the 'Noles, with QB Drew Weatherford hitting WR Willie Reid on a 64-yard bomb down to the 8 yard-line of Duke. However, a goalline stand by the Duke defense limited Florida State to a 21-yard field goal by K Gary Cismesia, putting FSU up 3-0 early in the first. An interception by CB Gerard Ross of a Mike Schneider pass gave the 'Noles the ball at mid-field, where RB Leon Washington busted off a 39 yard run, setting up a Weatherford to WR Decody Fagg score to make it 10-0. Duke's offense continuted to struggle, going three-and-out, but the defense held once again, limiting FSU to another Cismesia field goal, this one from 50 yards out, and stretching the score out to 13-0 with :35 seconds left in the first quarter. A Cedric Dargan fumble on the next Duke drive gave the ball right back to FSU in Duke territory, where Washington ran it in for a TD, and a 20-0 lead. However, just as things were looking bleak, Duke answered, with QB Mike Schneider coming on fire, tossing passes of 24, 17, and 29 yards, with the drive ending in a 32 yard Joe Surgan field goal. After getting two more stops, yet failing to do anything on offense, the Duke defense relented one final time on another Weatherford bomb to Willie Read, giving FSU the 27-3 lead at the half.

Halftime: Florida State 27, Duke 3

Coach Ted Roof must have given one heck of a halftime speech, as the Duke offense came out on fire, with Mike Schneider tossing in a touchdown to WR Deon Adams at the 4:35 minute mark of the third quarter, bringing Duke within 17. A stop by the Duke defense, and subsequent punt to Duke, setup a 68-yard touchdown strike from Schneider to WR Jomar Wright, putting the score at 27-17 mid-way through the 3rd. Things began to look bleak for Duke again late in the third, as FSU began driving, but a fumble by Washington was recovered by Codey Lowe near midfield. The Duke offense moved into field goal range for Joe Surgan, moving to within a touchdown of Florida state at the 3:07 mark of the fourth quarter. However, Leon Washington answered to his mistake, scoring a touchdown on the ensuing drive, which was setup by a 57 yard connection between Weatherford and Ried, and effectively ending Duke's chances of an upset. A late-game pick by Schneider put the last ditch effort to rest and FSU left Durham with a win, however a hotly contested one.

When the Blue Devils have the ball: Pass early and often. QB Mike Schneider has showed tremendous ability this year, but too often it is when Duke is already down too far to make a difference. Wake's pass defense gives up 277 yards/game on average, something that the Blue Devils can take advantage of.

When the Demon Deacons have the ball: Stop Barclay. Duke did their best job of the year last game v. Florida State at holding prolific running backs, limiting Leon Washington to 125 yards through the last FSU series. If they can have similar success against Chris Barclay, there is a chance Duke can win.

Key to the Game: Score early. Duke's defense and offense have both taken a few series to get their act together in most games this season, which has resulted in Duke constantly playing from behind. If Duke can grab the early lead, they have shown the ability to milk it and win, as in the Georgia Tech game.

Schneider leads Devils past Wake Forest, 35-31
Duke's fourth win of the season keeps them in the chase for a bowl

Durham - Last week, Coach Ted Roof said his team got fed up with the "so close, yet so far away" feeling of so many of the team's losses this season. Junior QB Mike Schneider led a team meeting on Friday night without coaches present, which apparently fired the Blue Devils up, enough so to edge out the Demon Deacons on Saturday 35-31. Schneider had a dazzling performance, tossing in five touchdowns and 392 yards, both top marks so far this season.

Duke struck first, with Schneider hitting WR Corey Thompson on a 29 yard crossing route at the 2:02 mark of the first quarter. Wake answered, led by the legs of QB Ben Mauk, whose 37-yard run put the Deacs in scoring position. However, another goalline stand for the Duke defense held Wake to a field goal early in the second quarter. Schneider had another phenomenal series, throwing passes of 27 and 61 yards, the last, a connection on a play-action fake to Deon Adams for 6. However, Chris Barclay got going on Wake's next drive, with runs of 24 and 33 yards, setting up a touchdown for season-long starter but now backup running back Micah Andrews at the 3:30 mark of the second quarter. Back to back drives were halted by the defenses, before Schneider answered the call once again, tossing in a 15 yard touchdown fade pass to Ben Patrick with 31 seconds left before the half.

Halftime: Duke 21, Wake Forest 10

Wake had lost momentum before halftime, but quickly regained the edge as RB De'Angelo Bryant returned the kickoff from Duke 99 yards for a touchdown. The Duke offense failed to answer on their next drive, but the Duke D stepped in, as LB DeAndre White picked off Ben Mauk at mid-field. The turnover setup yet another Schneider touchdown, this one to RB Cedric Dargan, with 1:43 left in the third, pushing the Duke lead to 11 once again. Chris Barclay quickly took over the game though, scoring on a 78-yard run on Wake's next posession, and after a Schneider interception, setting up another Wake touchdown with a 48 yard run to the Duke 5. The Deacs held the lead for the first time all game at 31-28 early in the 4th quarter. With their backs against the wall, the Duke offense responded, with a 20-yard run by RB Justin Boyle on a third and long, and 23-yard connection between the runningback and Schneider on a 4th down that kept the drive moving. Schneider threw his fifth and final touchdown of the game to FB Malcolm Ruff with 3:24 left in the fourth to put Duke up 35-31. The Duke defense held on the next Wake drive, and the Deacs were forced to punt with 2:00 left. Runningbacks Dargan and Boyle kept the clock moving and sealed Duke's fourth victory of the season.

When the Blue Devils have the ball: Run, run, run. Clemson's run defense is 117th in the nation, giving up 157 yards a game on the ground. The pass D is ranked towards the top at only 220 yards/game, so it will be up to Cedric Dargan and Justin Boyle to capitalize on this.

When the Tigers have the ball: Stop the pass. Clemson is going to throw the ball...a lot. Charlie Whitehurst is averaging 250 yards through the air per game, 100 yards over the average that the Duke defense is giving up a game. This matchup may determine the outcome of the game.

Key to the Game: Defense. Both teams have good defenses, particularly against the pass. Since neither team has been spectacular offensively, this game will come down to whoever's defense can have the better game.

Tigers take a bite out of Blue Devils, end bowl hopes for Duke
Ten unanswered points in the fourth lead to 27-24 win for Clemson

I have the headline, but was so frustrated during this game, I kind of slacked on noting the important plays, and forgot to get the box score and individual stats before exiting from the game. Suffice to say that Whitehurst owned me for about 400 passing yards and 3 TDs, one coming late in the fourth that put Clemson ahead and was a daggar to my chances. Clemson turned the ball over about 6 times or so, but I couldn't really capitalize on it. Oh well, tough break, sorry for the lack of info, I will makeup for it with a big spread on the UNC-CH game.

Series History: 53-35-4 North Carolina
Last Game: North Carolina won the season ending matchup with Duke in Chapel Hill, crushing the Devils 40-17, earning the Heels a 6-5 record and a bid to the Continental Tire Bowl in Charlotte. Duke ended the season 2-9 in Ted Roof's first full year at Duke.

When the Blue Devils have the ball: Run, run, run. The Tar Heels have been giving up 140 yards on the ground a game, 109th in the league. With a pass defense rated much higher in the top 30, Duke is going to have to establish the run in order to win.

When the Tar Heels have the ball: Contain Jesse Holley. With RB Ronnie McGill out for the game, the Heels will most likely rely on the passing game with Matt Baker. Holley is an explosive player, and it will be up to CB John Talley to keep Holley from breaking the game open.

Key to the Game: Turnovers. Both teams have had turnover problems this year, with both averaging around 2.5 turnovers a game. Whoever can hold on to the ball stands the best chance in winning the Victory Bell.

Blue Devils dominate Heels, 55-10
Dargan and Boyle combine for 336 yards, 3 touchdowns on the ground

Chapel Hill - On a day when most people said UNC had more to play for than Duke, the Blue Devils stunned a sellout crowd at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill by blowing out their rival Tar Heels by 45 points. The opening drive would set the tone for the rest of the game, as Cedric Dargan rumbled on the first play for 46 yards, followed by a Justin Boyle run for another 21 on the ground. Dargan scored from four yards out on the next play to put Duke up 7-0 early.

The Duke defense held stout during the whole first half, holding the Heels to negative rushing yards and only 3 points. Meanwhile, the Duke offense would score three more touchdowns before the break. Mike Schneider got going on Duke's third drive of the game, with passes of 11 and 45 yards, that led to a QB sneak by Schneider for the score. Dargan and Boyle combined for 52 yards on the next Duke possession, with Boyle getting six. Not to be outdone, Dargan put in his second touchdown of the half with 3:31 left in the second quarter to make the score 28-0. UNC was able to get a field goal with 2:31 left in the half after a 54 yard bomb from Matt Baker to Kenton Thornton put the Heels in field position for the kick.

Halftime: Duke 28, North Carolina 3

UNC failed to get anywhere on their opening drive of the second half, but the Duke offense picked up right where they left off, with Dargan and Boyle combining for another 42 yards on adrive that ended in a Mike Schneider to Malcolm Ruff touchdown connection at the 3:34 mark of the third quarter. Matt Baker was picked for the second time of the game by Brendan Dewan on UNC's next drive, which setup a Joe Surgan field goal with 1:00 left in the third to make the score 38-3. The Duke defense had managed to keep UNC Wideout Jesse Holley quiet for most of the game, but on the next drive Baker finally found his man for an 80-yard touchdown strike. John Talley retaliated on the kickoff return which he took 73 yards deep into UNC territory, setting up another Duke field goal, bringing the score to 41-10 early in the fourth. Two failed fourth down attempts deep in their own territory setup two more touchdowns in garbage time for the Devils. The Victory Bell was retrieved from the UNC sideline by a horde of Duke players as the clock wound down to 00:00, only Duke's second victory in the rivalry since 1990, but also the second in the past four years.

I'll take it. After the ECU loss to open the season, especially with how atrocious my run defense was, I was expecting 2 or 3 wins. I'm losing some stars in Dewan, Alexander, and Dargan, but with Schneider, Boyle, and Talley coming back, there should still be playmakers on both sides of the ball. The biggest question mark going into next season will be whether or not the offensive line can improve. If so, I'm thinking a bowl game won't be out of the question.

gah, almost! What irony, Tennesee and NC State playing in the national championship.

I seriously considered quitting out and resimulating...but then realized it helped me for State to lose, so I decided that getting close enough but not quite there would be typical Amato and was therefore fitting :D .

I can't believe Auburn didn't make a bowl. We get shafted even in the video game.

Evaluation of the 2006 Recruiting Class

Quality over quantity was the word for Duke this year. With 52 returning players on the roster, it was more important to get guys who could make an instant impact on the depth chart rather than placeholders. Next year with 18 Seniors, there will be no such luxury. Any of these players could instantly fill into starting roles, depending on spring training of exisiting players. While no punter was signed, either K Alex Feinburg RS JR or K Joe Surgan SO can move over to the punter position. Overall, a solid class, though ranked low due to lack of quantity, but something to build on for next year.
