I love college baseball...and not just at CWS like a lot of people...I'm going to try to make to as many husker games as I can this year.

I have season tix as part of the Animals of Section B at FSU. I like where we're at in that poll...we better make it to Omaha this year cause I'm planning on going no matter what.

Never had a chance before and I know it is something every college baseball fans should attend at least once.

I have no idea what to expect this year. It looks like Chamberliss will be full-time with the baseball program this year though because he can't go full-contact with the football team. That could prove huge for the Ags this year. He always seemed tired last year.

Damn Husker, you beat me to postin this.

Hell yeah...UNC at 7. A lot of people are surprised, thinking that we'd be in the top 5, but top 10 is justttt fine.

Childress is a hell of a coach, and he was one of our most prized possessions no body knew about for awhile at NU. He was a huge factor in the teams turn around and success. The Ags have a very good coach...he will have A&M a winner in a couple of years, no doubt in my mind.

I played long toss with Parker Dalton yesterday, and he's beyond excited about the team this year. He has a good shot at being an All-Big XII 2nd Baseman for the Ags.

Defending SoCon champs, baby!!!

The FU baseball team actually came in like 6th or 7th in the conference last year(we did beat Tennesse once and swept South Carolina in the regular season) but won the SoCon tournament, then gave #2 ranked Georgia Tech a run for their money(went to extra innings, I believe) in the regionals. Since I know a few guys on our baseball team, and that the field is maybe a few hundred feet from my dorm, I'll definitely have to go see some games this year.

Yeah, ya'll scared the crap out of us, I believe we won in walkoff fashion in like the 12th inning. But we couldn't even come close to beating Tennessee.

Part of me is kind of surprised that Nebraska is ranked 4th because we lost some big players on defense but the other part isn't because we have one of the best pitching staffs in the nation and alot of frshman got alot of experience. Less than 2 months till the season starts.:)

Ergh. And I used to like the kid. ;) Just kidding.

I won't get to see him play in person this season, except for the ACC championship....if UNC doesn't make the 8 team cut, ya'll can blame him. ;)

When you come to Tallahassee in 07, you'll get to experience the Animals first hand. Nothing like it in the ACC.

Here's a little fun we had with the early departures from the 05 ACC Tourney:

Behind Shane Robinson (who was POTY by one publication) and Chambliss, I like FSU's chances of going to the CWS. Don't they also get some kid this year as an early graduate who was a highly rated HS player?

You may be thinking of Rauri O'Conner who graduated early from HS to play for FSU last year. Not sure if there is a new one like that.

Hopefully this team will have the sort of chemistry they had last year...but with the depth they have this year. That'd be nice.

Texas didn't work out for a lot of reasons so I ended up deciding on UNC. I play middle infield for the most part but I can truly play anywhere on the field except catcher and first base.

That's a bummer. No offense to Mike Fox, he's a good coach, but Garrido is in a different league.

I think earlier I was thinking you'd be playing for UNC this coming season, but then I realized you're prolly coming in for the 2007 season (unless you're graduating early or something).

Do you think you'll have a shot at starting?

Good luck at Carolina, man. Believe it or not(considering I grew up a Duke fan), my parents have 5 combined degrees from UNC-Chapel Hill, and it is a fine institution. You'll soon find that there is hardly a finer place on Earth than the Triangle Area of North Carolina.

However, now that you're playing for the Tar Heels, I'm obligated to hate you forever. Don't take it personally:D

Garrido-yes...trust me, I know. I've grown up around him. He is an absolutely incredible baseball coach. The best. However, I just did not feel a connection with Coach Garrido. I'm a player who will fail once or twice but after that, you can rely on me. At Texas, you get one shot, maybe two if you're lucky, otherwise it's see you later, bring in the next top 100 player in the country. At UNC, it's not completely different, but Coach Fox won't abandon you. I'm not a flashy player at all. I'm a scrappy player, but a good scrappy player that gets the job done 99 times out of 100. It takes a certain coach to see that in me and Coach Fox did. But it's that one time that sets me apart from Texas and UNC. On top of that, he's a really strong Christian, as am I (although I definitely sin more than I should) and off of the field, he's a great man to be around. Coach Garrido...not so much. An alcoholic with a short, short fuse off of the field. Don't get me wrong, Coach Fox gets after it on the field, and it shows with the progress he has made in bringing the North Carolina baseball program to a top tier program. But he's a guy that won't forget a player after he's graduated. He reminds me of a high school coach (except much more knowledgeable of the game).

Another reason...I have a very good shot of starting as a freshman at UNC. North Carolina loses a lot after this year (most of the number 1 recruiting class from 3 years ago) and so Coach Fox expects our class to step right in. I'm one of two middle infielders recruited and the only true athlete (somebody that can really play anywhere).

And Dukeman...don't hate the player, hate the game!!:D

i didn't think the texas schools let home-state guys get away that often. what other schools did you consider? i'm really curious what these programs look like to recruits. did certain coaches offer you more or less % of schollies to try to lure you since baseball has so few schollies in the first place? was playing in the sec/big xii/acc/etc a factor? just, in general what were you looking for and what made you settle on unc?

in other news... south carolina is way underrated this year. i think the pollsters are just looking at how we finished last year (knocked out in the super-regionals) and what we lost in the draft. the sec is tough, especially the east, but i definitely think we'll be back in omaha this year.

They don't. That's why those schools all jumped on the opportunity. Lots of Texas players go to Tulane, LSU, OU, OSU, Arkansas, and occasionally some to Ole' Miss, Bama, and Auburn but none really go as far as the East Coast. Yeah, some coaches offered more to try and draw me in, especially one school, but I didn't like it at all. Playin in a big conference like the Big XII, SEC, and ACC was definitely a factor. I'm excited about playin' the big boys in Miami, Clemson, FSU, etc.

The other schools were:
Texas, TCU, Houston, Baylor, Tech, Rice, Arizona, ASU, Arkansas, Bama, Auburn, Virginia, Georgia, Boston College, Washington & Lee, and then I talked to Stanford, Princeton, Harvard, and Yale, and was definitely leaning in that direction at one point but I lost interest after a while. Also a lot of schools for football as well.

Out of those, I narrowed it down to 5:
Texas, TCU, Georgia, Virginia, and UNC.

So much made me decide on UNC, but the thing that really set UNC apart from others was the coach, the academics (although some schools on that list outweigh UNC for academics), and the opportunity that all 14 signees (almost all pitchers) in my class will be presented with the day we step on campus. Coach Fox has big expectations for our class, since such a big one is leaving this year and next. Everything just felt right. Everything except bein so far away from home, but I can manage.

How's FSU's pitching staff this year?

We lost our best closer from last year, but we're supposed to be pretty well stacked this year. I know we got a closer transfer from the SEC...South Carolina I think.

We should have better hitting this year. Last year was pretty dismal, except for Robinson's unreal numbers (slap hitter). We should have more homeruns this year, though I doubt we'll be in the neighborhood of GaTech in that regard.

That's all Georgia Tech does is recruit huge power hitters. I think that's why they haven't been AS good lately.

Yeah, We've got Wes Hodges and Matt Wieters returning this year and they are both preseason All-Americans. Wieters lead the team with 10 HRs last year and also led the team in saves.

Clemson is looking good too though. FSU and a few others are also in the preseason rankings. It is going to be a close ACC this year.

this year could be shaky for the Canes. we lost some including our best pitcher (Cesaer Carrillo) and one of our best hitters (3B Ryan Braun), and with as loaded as the ACC is, Omaho might be a long shot.

I will def. be coming to see UNC baseball next spring (and this one) so I look forward to cheering for ya longhorn. I graduate next spring so if I decide to stay in the area I will def. get season tickets.

So much made me decide on UNC, but the thing that really set UNC apart from others was the coach, the academics (although some schools on that list outweigh UNC for academics), and the opportunity that all 16 signees (almost all pitchers) in my class will be presented with the day we step on campus. Coach Fox has big expectations for our class, since such a big one is leaving this year and next. Everything just felt right. Everything except bein so far away from home, but I can manage.

Do you know anything about what Kendric Burney is going to do scholarship wise? There was some speculation that he might take a baseball scholarship his first year and basically redshirt in football (practice with the team but obviously not play) and then switch to a football scholarship his 2nd year. Basically, the same thing Yeatman is doing at Notre Dame with lacrosse. I don't know if this is true or not, but it certainly seems feasible with how tight we are on scholarships for football.

media are bias...and remember, almost noone had us ranked in the preseason last year, and we made the CWS. Preseason rankings don't mean much. Our pitching is VERY deep and VERY good once again...Gerch will be our main stud at the plate, and we will have a solid line up. We should make another run at Omaha.

Warm schools start early, yes. FSU starts on Feb 3. A lot of the northern schools will travel south for away series early in the season as well. They can practice more down here.

We have Minnesota coming down here at the end of February, and have had Mich St. and others in the past.

If one big group:

1. Clemson
2. Georgia Tech
3. Florida State
4. Miami
5. Virginia
6. Boston College
7. North Carolina
8. NC State
9. Maryland
10. Wake Forest
11. Virginia Tech
12. Duke

or
Atlantic:
1. Clemson - CWS team
2. FSU - Super Regional
3. BC - Regional
4. NC State - Regional
5. Maryland
6. Wake Forest

Coastal:
1. Georgia Tech - CWS team
2. Miami - Super Regional
3. UVA - Super Regional
4. UNC - Regional
5. VT
6. Duke

Any thoughts? I just feel that GT and Clemson are just too deep for anyone to win the conference other than those two. Matt Wieters and Taylor Harbin are phenomenal players and should be playing in the big leagues some day.

when i first heard about this i was pissed... but the more i think about it the more i think it is probably a good thing and is probably going to help college baseball in the long run. as long as college baseball is dominated by the southeast, texas, and west coast it will always just be a niche sport. pushing the start date back will level the playing field for the northern, midwest, and eastern schools. in the long run i think that will be better for everyone.

The only way it would help northern teams is if they pushed it a LOT further back. The problem with it is that the pro draft right now happens right towards the end of the season. What happens is that a lot of these kids find that they no longer want to play college ball for 'free' and mail it in at the end of the season so they can sign a contract and...you know...be rich.

Unless the pro draft is pushed back (good luck with that), you'll end up midseason with a bunch of kids who just aren't playing anymore.

Add to that mix the various summer ball leagues, which start right after the college season ends (and I think in some cases prior to) and you can see the issue.

There is a TON in the way of making it so northern schools can be successful, and most of it isn't in the control of the NCAA.

Absolutely. Last year this series was a better indicator, but this year I don't think it will be. We'll get a MUCH better look at this team when we face #1 Florida on the 28th. It is a midweek game, so neither team will throw a starter, but the batting a fielding will be the same as the weekend so we'll get to make a real evaluation of fielding, if nothing else.

That game is in Gainseville and with what UF has returning offensively, I don't expect a win. We do have a supposedly deep pitching staff this year, so who knows, maybe we'll find another Bryan Henry (who got wins vs UF and Miami in the same week last year, was a midweek guy for the UF game and after that because a weekend starter and took care of Miami).

I'll be a lot happier when all the teams start practice at the same time. Nebraska and other northern schools are at a disadvantage when they open their season with a southern school that already has 10+ games under their belt.

Granted, I don't think it plays a huge part at the end of the season, but a few early season losses for bubble teams may cost them a shot at a regional birth.

Houston Classic update:

TCU 5
Tulane 3

Rice 5
Texas Tech 1

Houston/Texas up next.

Is that the one at Minute Maid? I wish they could make it where all of the Texas schools would play each other instead of leaving teams out on certain years.

Anyway, the Ags had their first game tonight. You can't tell very much from one game but the Ags seemed to be more disciplined at the plate and more aggresive on the mound. We ended up beating Northwestern State 10-4. The game also included 10 steals which tied a school record.

The only bad thing for the night was that a cold front is coming in so it was cold as hell and will be for the rest of the series.

Our midweek starters have formed a 4 man rotation, and they've stepped up so far.

If you watch Knight School, then you have seen our midweek starter in Dustin Richardson. He struggled last year, but hes been doing good so far this year.

We had a good staff last year but we are doing a better job of making teams beat us instead of walking a ton of batters. Most of that has to due with Childress so I have no problem giving him credit.

I was wrong about their rank though Florida is #5

We lost 3-2 @ Rice last night. Apparently there was some brutal homer umpiring, but I didn't see the game myself. Unfortunate if true though.

Also, Texas was beating UNLV (not a very good team) 10-0 in the fifth tonight. Final Score: UNLV 13, Texas 12

FSU beat Brown 12-0 Friday night. And 21-5 today. We had a 15 run inning today. That's right...15 runs in one inning.

It is a shame too, their starter today was really doing well, holding us to no runs through 3 before giving up one in the 4th. Then his coach left him in too long. They went through 4 or five pitchers that inning. I think we had 21 batters for the inning, and Ryne Malone hit TWO home runs in the inning.

I hope we never schedule them again. They are terrible.

Augustine is definitely legit. Ball hasn't gotten the job done, IMHO, but the team has enough offense that they pretty much just need to win one of two games every weekend (Friday or Sunday) to win every series...cause they won't lose on Saturday too often, if at all.

Yea, he is a heck of a prospect. He made A&M's hitters look foolish all game long. Another low scoring game is going on right now with A&M leading 1-0 in the bottom of the 7th (2 outs but Florida has a player on 2b).

McMahon needs to take a look at some other pitchers soon if they want to get back to Omaha.

That said though, A&M got themselves a heck of a coach, so you can't take anything away from them despite UF's recent struggles.

FSU over Brown 15-7 for the sweep.

We need to consider some pitching moves I think. I'm not real convinced our 2&3 guys (Chambliss and Browning) are going to be able to get it done versus better hitting. Our #4 guy Hyde will, I think, end up in the regular starting rotation. Not sure about a #3...possibly senior Sauls if he ever fully recovers from his injury.

The good thing is we have a lot of pen depth, so even if the starters get into trouble, we can get out of it.

Texas beat Texas Tech 4-3 in a great game last night. We had our number 3/4 guy on the mound going against UT's ACE. He pitched pretty solid for 4 innings and survived the 5th. He was our first true freshman to start a conference game since we were in the SWC. Walks and hit batters is what killed us in the end, as we only gave up 5 hits to Texas.

Miles Morgan, our number 1/2 guy starts today.....if the weather permits. We're actually getting decent amounts of rain for the first time since this fall. We went like 99 days without any measurable precip and we are currently nearing 150 days of a good rain(quarter inch or more). So we'll take it.

Well, we got in game 2 and it was cold again. Add in the rain and it was a little bit more miserable than Friday night. Our number 1(currenlty till our origional number 1 comes back from injury) redshirt-freshman Miles Morgan dominated Texas. He had 0 walks, 15 K's, allowed 4 hits and 1 run in a complete game win against Texas. Final 2-1 Tech. It was a great game to watch.

Right now, there is light rain in the Lubbock area and heavier showers and t-storms to the southwest. Forecasts calls for more showers and t-storms, with some being severe. Temerature is suppose to get into the upper 50's...lower 60's today. So hopefully, they get in game 3 today.
