After another disappointing season at West Point, the decision was made to bring some new blood in. Taking over the Cadets will be Steven Howell. Steven sports an impressive resume to USMA Alumni, after graduating from Appalachian State he served as a 2nd Lt with the 82nd Airborne, this with his experience coaching highschool and college football as a Head Coach at Enka High School in North Carolina, and as an Assistant Head Coach at Western Carolina University made him an Ideal candidate for the position. Coach Howell had this to say about his new position "Honestly its a great honor, althought I never got to attend to West Point as a student I have always admired what the cadets go through here, and the code of Honor Duty Country means alot to these young men, so I know I can expect nothing but the best from them. Its my goal to take Army back to the old winning ways of Coach Earl Blaik. If we can get that intensity that his undefeated teams back in the 40's had then I think we can make a real impact and maybe make it back into a real conference."
Coach Howell is known as an offensive mastermind, bringing in his version of the spread option. Opposing defensive coordinators have trouble stopping his offensive juggarnuats due to his ability to mix up the pass in a five wide set, to running in a power I formation. One opposing coordinator had this to say about his WCU offenses "You just never know what hes going to through at you, its like he has no conscience. Just when you think hes going to grind it out and make it a low scoring game, he comes out with five wide and throws the ball all over you. And if you have a weakness he will find it and exploit it."
Going into this season Coach Howell faces alot of difficult tasks. First is to accomplish a winning season. Army has gotten so used to the losing ways that he will have to instill a new passion and a new way of thought for these young recruits. The other goal is as always BEAT NAVY. If Coach Howell can accomplish just the last this will be an improvement over past experiences.
One of the most difficult tasks that most people fail to notice is recruiting for Coach Howell. Being a military academy that requires a military committement after graduation means a smaller class of recruits to chose from. According to Coach Howell he will concentrate primarily on the northeastern states in his recruiting and would like to see some walkons to help the team out.
From the looks of things Army football may be on the way out of the dumps for once, only time will tell. Stay tuned for more updates...
*As always its been a while since I have been on here, last january if I am not mistaken, so any advice or any ideas you have to make this a better dynasty thread just let me know. Thanks ahead of time guys*
