I am having a major dilemma with freethrow shooting. Practicing my free throws, I'm currently 7 of 52. I made 3 in a row one time in which I though I found a good secret but I didn't. Of course, I'm practicing with Sacred Heart, they may not be great free throw shooters.
My main problem is not the release part, I got that down, it's the centering. How do you center it properly? I try take the analog straight back but it doesn't seem to help.

I turned on Real FT % because it automatically shoots the free throw and the outcome is determined by that player's free throw rating. Can't play without it now.

hmm, I think it's easy. Just get the timing down and let go right as he shoots.

That's a good idea. I'll probably go with that for now.

I'm starting to think the not centered thing is totally random. I went to practice, and actually looked at my thumbstick to make sure that I pulled it straight down, and still got not centered.

I thought it was my players but I practiced with NCSU, a great free throw shooting team, and same problems. I'm gonna try the Real FT thing and see how it goes.

That is definitely the problem. I too was having major difficulties with FT's. I went to practice and I was like 3 for 42. I had my hands in the normal position on the control, and used my right thumb to pull the analog stick down. I guess I wasn't going straight down, and it caused me to miss. Now, my strategy is to take my hand off the controller and use my index finger and thumb to grab and pull down the analog stick to make sure that it is being pulled straight down. My results were dramatic. I went through my entire starting 5 and did no worse than 7/10 with all 5.
Also, I didn't know about the option to use a players normal FT%. That seems interesting, and I might want to try that.

Is free-throw shooting drastically different from last year's system where you hold down on the "A" button and release as the shooter is finishing his motion?

Well, you pull down the right analog stick at the right time. I can't make shit because it says I'm not centered. Of course, if I was centered, I'd make about every free throw, so I say Real FT% should be more realistic. Real FT% is where you pull down the R stick and make it or not depending on the player's FT rating.

Well I am not sure what you guys are talking about. I've been shooting 90% so far since I started playing the game. I'd work on your timing of the release; that's the only thing i can think of that may be causing this.

They're virtually the same as last year, and I don't care what they look like. As long as I know how to time it so that the shots go in, I could care less.

Ive noticed I started shooting a helluva lot better when I Pulled the stick back then pushed it all the way up.

I didn't even think about doing that. I'll try that out. Maybe releasing it can go just wild enough that it won't be centered.

After working on freethrow shooting and getting it down I was shooting well over 95% from the line at which time I just made the switch to real %.
For anyone who wants to shoot them themselves and is struggling might I offer help. What I did was to totally hold the controller a different way when I shot them. Instead of pushing down with my thumb in a sidways motion for my thumb i moved my thumb so that only the tip of it was on the stick and it was perpendicular to the contoller. Now when I pulled down (straight down for my hand instead of sideways) perpendicular to the controller I was always in line and made almost every one no matter how bad the shooter. This fixed my missing dilema and made me too good.
So the true % FT was a nice add IMO and the only way to go. At end of games it makes it HUGE to have a guy like Redick on your squad :)

The Real FT% is a good addition, but I don't want to use it because then I feel like I have no control over whether the free throw is made or not. soce, do you still go through the motion of shooting with the analog stick or does the game just shoot it for you since it all depends on the player's FT rating? I know even without the Real FT%, the ratings are still supposed to come into effect, but like you I am shooting 90+% in my exhibition games thus far.

No, when you use the real % it is all based on rating. It doesn't matter if I perfect release or sit there twirling the stick doing 360s.... That is why at the end of game when they intentionally foul it is good to have a stud FT shooter out there.

I think the real FT shooting basically gives you room for error when you have a highly rated free throw shooter.

This Real FT% thing is starting to grow on me. It makes the ends of games more strategic because you want to keep the ball in the hands of your best shooters. Then I also wouldn't be able to go 10-10 with Marco Killingsworth at the line (<50% FT shooter so far this year).

I don't believe that it has anything to do with your pulling on the stick at all...

No it doesn't. In fact, the game just shot the free throw for me once without me moving the stick at all.

Free throw shooters are as good as they set out to be. If they can make it, great. If not, drill time during the next practice. It all rests on the players.

I tried something different with my FTs. Instead of just pulling down with my right thuhmb, I pull down with both, and hardly get not centered anymore.
