Texas or Stanford Hands down...You have to mention Ohio State, Duke, and Florida in that mix though they cannot come close to what the other two schools have achieved. If you go just on "major sports" Texas wins.

I think A&M has the best facilities and is one of the best places to watch a game in the country but we are not top notch as far as records go.

If we are talking all of College, it is hard to top Middlebury College (VT).

Pussy sports don't count.
Give me a break. Sports are sports.

Total NCAA Team Championships: 90
men's championships: 57
women's championships: 33
coed championships: 0

Breakdown by Sport:
men's baseball: 2
men's basketball: 1
women's basketball: 2
men's cross country: 4
women's cross country: 2
men's golf: 7
men's gymnastics: 3
men's swimming & diving: 8
women's swimming & diving: 8
men's tennis: 17
women's tennis: 14
men's outdoor track & field: 4
men's volleyball: 1
women's volleyball: 6
men's water polo: 10
women's water polo: 1

Speaks for itself.

UCLA is first overall with USC third in championships won. Stanford has won the director's cup (D-1A) eleven consecutive times (awarded to the best athletic program of the year), I believe.

How is Water Polo even a NCAA sport? Is it even played outside of California and Hawaii? Ditto Men's Volleyball, is there even a program east of the Mississippi?

To be fair Brock, the Pac 10 and west coast has the advantage in a lot of those sports because most of them aren't played in the midwest or east.

While hockey is a big sport out east and not found out here, water polo, volleyball, and probably some of the other sports aren't out east.

I get both of your points...but the question was which is the best college for sports...not specific ones.

For all sports, probably Stanford.
For sports people care about, Texas.

Can we at least agree Men's Gymnastics is not a sport, but an exercise is homosexuality?

not to be a homer, but add ohio state into the group next year, with football and basketball, since we have that amazing recruiting class coming in. But yeah, Texas is for sure the school right now for sports.

So...

Alright, let's have a panel and nominate which sports are worthy before we have this discussion. [glare]

Women's Basketball
Then we have to count best intramural men's programs (or even worst) in the nation. [/low blow]

I would put Women's soccer and Volleyball in that list as well. Most schools play both of those sports because of Title IX.

Well to be somewhat of a homer as well (and since I currently teach a couple of classes here) Nebraska-Kearney
http://www.lopers.com/images/new_jpg/tabrt.jpg

They have a decent football team, pretty good this season.
The volleyball team is ranked #1 in the nation in DII
Both basketball programs are among the nations most consistent.
Track teams have both done well lately.
Baseball is up-and-coming
Wrestling won the national duals a couple of years ago and is normally ranked in the top 10 nationally.

Go Lopers!

Good point. Top notch intramural teams can beat any women's team.

Some of those others schools only are good in one thing such as Duke in basketball, but Standford isnt ranked in football, basketball, or baseball i think. And those are the 3 top sports

OU probably has a good resume since 2000

football... ok you got it
basketball... conference champs alot recently
baseball... were generally decent
wrestling... usually ranked high
wbaskeball - we've been competitive went to the champ game a couple of years ago
mens gymnastics - we're the shiznite... arguably best program in the nation
and were pretty decent at softball too i believe

Duke was top 5 in the Director's cup which is impossible to do if you are only good at one sport.

Duke is good in lacrosse, 2005 National Runners Up, and I think they excel in Golf and Tennis as well, not to mention Women's Basketball.
