Simply stated. I went to the Gardner-Webb game tonight. We blow. Bobby Frasor turned the ball over about a thousand times and is still good enough to stay in the lineup. That shows how bad Quentin Thomas is. David Noel was by far the best player on the court.

Oh well, everyone knows that this will be a re-building year anyways. Although Hansbrough showed a lot of promise.

I just saw that UNC got the lead off a 3 by Noel with 1.3 ticks left. [wow]

I definitely think now NC State should sweep them, but I think UNC will get better and unfortunately NCSU is bound to choke so they'll to lose to UNC once.

Ok, I saw the box score. Hansbrough was benched for BYRON SANDERS!? And Green played 13 minutes and got 17 points, maybe you should that guy more too. I'm really confused on what to expect from Carolina this year...

Hansbrough was never benched. Sanders came in for him at the end of the game for defensive purposes or something. I don't know. As far as who played. Roy used 2 rotations of guys and for the most part rotated in and out 5 guys. The lineups were

Frasor, Ginyard, Terry, Noel, Hansbrough
Thomas, Miller, Green, Copeland, Sanders

Give them time. Guys like Frasor need time to get used to the speed of the college game. What will kill you most is there is no true PG in that lineup, which will make life in the ACC brutal. You guys are lucky that the ACC is having a down year.

I usually don't second guess Tubby, but why did he not spread the floor and let Rondo go one on one until someone stopped him?

About 3 minutes left he started doing that and noone could touch him. He ought to do that the entire game because there are probably 2 players in America who can handle Rondo off the dribble, and they play in the NBA.

Rondo is a distributor offensively, not as focused with scoring. The problem is they don't really have any consistent scorers for them except for Rekalin Sims. Kentucky is very overrated at #10, but it's an impressive win nonetheless by the Tar Heels.

I'm happy for Bobby. He was being ripped on even back during his sophomore year when I used to play with him because he's supposedly too slow to excel. It was hilarious to see everyone overlook him when he walked on the floor, and then proceed to get completely torn up by him. I think he's the savviest player in that class and has more than proven everybody wrong with his play so far this season.

Here's the problem with UNC this year. The team doesn't know how to set its own game tempo and only plays to the level of whomever they are playing. For the most part, all of our games have been close. We were as close with horrible teams earlier in the season as we were with Illinois. The team just needs to figure out how to set its own tempo.

Well if you're going to follow more than one team, you ought to follow them in multiple sports. I might not consider you a bandwagon fan if you kept an eye on Carolina during the football season.

Ouch to NC today. Didn't see the game, but I bet it was those guards: Hite, Diaz, and Harris. Right now, Miami and Clemson are bubble teams. And the ONLY reason why Miami is on the bubble is that they are only what 11-6/12-6? They had some bad losses out of conference.

carolinalax23
01-14-2006, 07:46 PM
It was only that Diaz guy. I'd watch out for him, he's lethal from anywhere on the court. He did however get away with several travels. We had the lead late in the 4th, but blew it. We turned the ball over way too much. Then, we took a lot of questionable shots. Roy was heated throughout the game by the play of the freshmen. He pulled them late in the 1st and put in Dewey Burke (a walkon) at the 3 and Mike Copeland at 4 with Byron Sanders, Quentin Thomas, and Wes Miller. This is the second straight game that he has pulled the starters to send a message. Green made some questionable decisions and turned the ball over at a crucial time. Ginyard screwed up on some give and go passes that lead to turnovers. Frasor played fine. Hansbrough messed up a few times, but carried us for a lot of the game.

I root for Maryland b-ball as well, and I admit I only started following them closely since 1999, but I do have an uncle who works at College Park campus and he owns season tickets to Terrapin games. I've been fortunate to see the 2001-02 national title squad practice in Cole Field House on Thanksgiving weekend, wish I had been to a game there though. I did however, go to a game at the Comcast Center a couple years ago, that was a nice experience. In my defense, I don't know a single "PSU b-ball fan" who doesn't root for a 2nd team somewhere.

I've never known any other teams to root for, really. My dad went to PSU (as did I 24 years later) and my aunt went to UNC. I actually grew up rooting against UMD (and I've lived in MD my whole life, when not in college) when we went to all the UNC and PSU football games and the UNC b-ball games against UMD. I don't hate them, but I'll only root for UMD when they're not playing PSU or UNC.

I already experessed my pride and joy over that win in the "Big Ten Basketball" thread on here. And yes, I would root for PSU over UMD if these two teams were ever unfortunate enough to meet. I've been a State College resident since I was 1 (I'll be 22 in March), hometown team is top priority, I'm not only a fan of football, but PSU athletics in general.

Hah, PETE CHILCUTT. I remember using him a lot to shoot 3-pointers in NBA Live 96 on the CD-ROM. [laugh]

Oh, and to clarify on the "2nd favorite team" of other PSU b-ball fans: The majority of them also root for St. Francis, Villanova, or Bucknell. And of course, I have friends who have hopped along the UNC and Gonzaga bandwagons respectively.

They blew it again. They were up by like 12 when I went to get popcorn and when I came back they were losing by like 5. They kept making poor decisions. The defensive play was horrible. We really have no one on the floor making any plays and we're trying to rely on Hansbrough. Frasor didn't do anything, Ginyard was horrible, Noel was non existant, Reyshawn blew, and Miller and Green were marginal.

I thought you guys might enjoy these:

------------
(Greensboro, NC) Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford announced today that a foul is tentatively scheduled to be called against Duke sometime in the first half of their game with UNC in Chapel Hill, next Tuesday, February 7th.

In a joint press conference with Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, and ACC Director of Officials John Clougherty, Swofford said an agreement had been reached for a touch foul to be whistled on as-yet-to-be-determined Blue Devil player around the 7:00 minute mark during the first half of the game at the Smith Center.

"We are very excited to arrange something that hasn't been seen in our conference since 1998," said Swofford. "I want to personally commend Mike {Krzyzewski} for agreeing to this uncoventional deal. We all know how reluctant he has been to allow any calls to go against his team."

Krzyzewski insisted that this move was purely a gesture of generosity aimed at rehabilitating his public image in light of recent lip-synching fiascos during several nationally televised games. "The camera did not catch me really uttering the BS-word during my argument with the official the other night. Those really were my lips moving but I wasn't really yelling the word. I'm sure our fans will understand."

"Mike is being a really good sport about this," noted UNC coach Roy Williams. "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to play them with a foul being called against their squad, and to have it happen here in front of the home crowd will be especially enjoyable for our fans."

Clougherty says that unless unforeseen intimidation happens during the game, that the scheduled foul should occur without a hitch. "It all depends on whether Coach K holds up his end of the bargain and promises not to harass our crew that evening."

Clougherty also said not to expect any more fouls to be called against Duke this season, but did not rule out the possibility of another one being called in an exhibition game in November 2006. "The Duke AD told me that they are trying to schedule Marathon Oil for a pre-season game next year and we are in discussions about perhaps calling another foul against Duke in that match-up if everyone can come to terms."

The officiating crew for the Duke vs. UNC game will not be announced publicly prior to the game in order to protect their privacy. Swofford said he anticipated a media barrage and did not want the referees to be distracted from their big task at hand. "This is a big deal and a momentous occasion for the league. We need our employees to remain focused so that they can complete their jobs in what could end up being a very difficult situation."

Game Notes: If the foul occurs on February 7th, it will be the 27th foul called against the Blue Devils in their basketball history...........Dick Vitale and Mike Patrick will be handling the TV play by play for ESPN. Vitale says he has no idea what he will say when the foul is called against Duke but he has been placed on a prescription sedative as a preventive measure. (Patrick could not be reached for comment, and was last seen entering a tanning salon in Durham with a picture of JJ Redick)......... A CBS 60 Minutes television crew is planning to attend the game to catch the event on tape for an upcoming expose on the Duke Basketball program and how Mike Krzyzewski uses friendships and loyalty to advance his own agenda.

I think everyone was looking forward to next year's Carolina-Duke matchup more so than the one this year. The teams should matchup like this next year:

Starters

1: Lawson vs. Paulus
2: Ellington vs. Nelson
3: Terry vs. McClure
4: Wright vs. McRoberts
5: Hansbrough vs. Boateng

Benches

1: Frasor vs.
2: Miller vs. Henderson
3: Green vs.
4: Stephenson vs. Boykin
5: Thompson vs. Zoubek

1: Thomas vs.
2: Ginyard vs. Pocius
3: Graves vs.
4: Copeland vs.
5:

1:
2: vs. Scheyer
3:
4:
5:

UNC Looks to have superior depth at every position with Duke holding the numbers edge only at shooting guard.

I'm fine with him being on the darkside. He is a hack politician who made his fortune ambulence chasing. He is almost as big a failure as another UNC grad, Erskin Bowles who couldn't win an election so he had to be given a job by the UNC System. Even though I don't particularly like him, he will probably make a good system president.

The Heels are going to be good, as long as everyone stays. Isn't Hansbrough already 20? If so, I could see him making the jump this year, more likely next.

Yeah, Carolina's gonna be deadly next year. Roy did an amazing job bringing in 3 of the Top-10 players in the nation.

Ellington-Henderson should be a great matchup considering they're best friends.

Erskine Bowles's downfall came when he forgot to do his research and ran that add that claimed Burr hated cancer victims. Burr was back in half a day with an add posing with his sister, a cancer victim. Bowles was screwed after that although Burr had already been making up ground.

Regardless of the bad add on cancer, which was a bizarre thing to attack him on anyways...I really don't know how any reasonable campaign marketer thought that was a good idea...Erskine was probably going to lose. He had already been framed as a loser after failing to beat the carpetbagger Elizabeth Dole. I think he has a square head on his shoulders and will be good for the UNC system, but I just don't think he had that killer political instinct.

Of course, if UNC and NCSU can succeed in breaking off from the UNC System, that would make things even more interesting...but I digress, this is a basketball thread not political one.

I think the question everyone will be asking is, who is going to start next year?

I really don't see Roy starting Lawson over Frasor with how well he's handled the signal calling duties tihs year. There's no doubt that Lawson is the better player and will see huge minutes off the bench.

I'm also unsure about Ellington starting over Miller. I don't see Roy taking a senior out of the starting lineup in place of a freshman. Again, Ellington will see huge minutes.

The only spot I see a freshman starting in is at 4/5. Someone, probably Wright, will have to play here.

I'm sure Roy will give Frasor and Miller a chance to keep their starting spots over the first few games of next season. However, if they don't play well, then their spots will be in trouble. Wright will in all likelihood fill that 4 slot where Noel left.
