The weights clanked together, and Chip grunted as he ground out another rep, before dropping them to the floor. "Good job..." his teammate, Mark Ellis said, "You keep that up and you'll get 20 jacks for sure..."

Chip grinned. He had hit 16 home runs his rookie season, two years ago, and upped it to 18 last year. "If I hit 20, or 2... doesn't matter to me. I just want to win..."

The Oakland A's had won their division last year with a 104-58 record. Unfortunately, they were beaten 3-1, by the Yankees in the AL Division Series. The awesome pitching that had carried the A's that season had, while not downright failed, had given up several 2-out base hits that had driven in runs for the hated Bronx Bombers. Plus, Chip not included, the A's had not hit the ball well at all... which all added up to a quick, unceremonial exit from the playoffs.

"What do you think of Billy's deals this winter?" he asked Ellis, the team's 2nd baseman and leadoff hitter to Chip's shortstop and #2 hitter. The tablesetters were teammates, roommates on the road, and good friends.

Mark shrugged, "One thing... Billy knows what he's doing. And think about it, he traded Redman, who wasn't gonna resign, anyway, and released Dye, who wasn't worth the money we were paying him. He signed Nick Neubarger, who I think can really be something. He's 7 years younger than Mark Redman, and he's a hell of a lot cheaper..."

"Yeah... but Rod Beck?" Chip asked, "I mean, I know he has the pedigree... but does he have anything left in the tank?"

Ellis shrugged, "He's not gonna be the closer... just help set up... and he knows HOW to close if we need him to..."

The second baseman laughed, "I've been here 4 years, and this is your 3rd coming up. You know the Oakland A's have to do things differently than other teams do. Moneyball... remember?"

"Yeah, yeah... I remember..." Chip said, laughing, "I just wanna win, Ells... I wanna be the poor man's Derek Jeter. And before you say anything... no... I'm not saying I'm as good as DJ. I never will be. What I AM saying... is I want people to get as sick of seeing me in the playoffs every year as they are of him..."

Mark nodded, then glanced behind Chip, "Well, I know SOMEONE who isn't sick of seeing you..."

Before Chip could turn around, a soft pair of hands covered his eyes, "Guess who?" a playful voice sounded in his ear...

He grinned, "I told you never to come up to me in public..." he said in a stage whisper, "Mandy will start to wonder if something's going on..."

The hands left his eyes and one slapped him on the shoulder, "Goofball..." actress/singer Mandy Moore said, grinning as she leaned in for a quick kiss, "How's the workout going?"

"Pretty good... gotta get ready for next year..." Chip replied, slipping an arm around her waist and pulling her close.

"You'll be fine..." Mandy said confidently, "You ready to go?"

"I guess..." Chip looked at Mark, "See you tomorrow?"

Ellis nodded, "Every day... season will be here before you know it..."

Chip sighed, "Yep... this year we're gettin' rings..."

Mandy raised an eyebrow, "What about me? Do I get a ring, too?" she asked, smiling coyly...

Chip grinned, "You never know..."

Once more Mandy slapped his shoulder, "Goofball..."

I hit .276 as a team, with 173 homers. I scored 709 runs for the season, an average of about 4.4 a game...

Like the real-life A's, I had to search for bargains, as I didn't have the biggest budget around. I originally started this as a "career" for myself as a created player. After messing around with a bunch of different dynasties, I finally decided on the A's, and started to look after the whole team, as well as my own created player...

My lineup looked like this... for the most part...

1b- Scott Hatteberg
2b- Mark Ellis
ss- Chip Myers
3b- Eric Chavez
lf- Eric Byrnes
cf- Mark Kotsay
rf- Bobby Kielty

I platooned at catcher between Adam Melhuse and Ramon Castro. Melhuse also played some at 1st. My outfield backups were Billy McMillon and Jermaine Dye. Esteban German was my utility infielder, and Bobby Crosby had a cup of coffee in September. Erubiel Durazo was my DH by and large. I worked my lineups constantly, trying to maximize playing time for everyone and keep the stats as realistic as possible...

I extended the contracts of most of my core guys... those I could, anyway, and actually had NO major turnover in my roster in the off-season. Then... the 2005 season rolled around, and it was considerably better:

2005 Season...

Finished 104-58 Won AL West Division, lost Division Series 3-1 to Yankees

Pitching Stats...

Tim Hudson 20-6 2.87
Barry Zito 19-7 2.66
Mark Redman 18-9 3.14
Mark Mulder 17-12 3.49
Rich Harden 13-13 4.02

Arthur Rhodes 0-0 28 saves 1.18
Ricardo Rincon 7-5 3 saves 3.88
Justin Duchscherer 6-2 4.17
Mario Ramos 2-1 3.42
Chad Harville 1-1 3.79
Nick Mabry 1-2 4.39

Ramon Castro 256 21 66 16 0 3 36 .258
Esteban German 216 24 42 11 1 2 17 .194
Adam Melhuse 176 14 38 6 0 2 16 .216
pitchers 27 3 6 2 0 0 3 .222

I hit .275 as a team, and scored 740 runs. In the playoffs, the Yankees took me out 3 games to 1. They made unbelievable plays on me, and Eric Byrnes, after hitting .295 in the regular season, went 0-11 in the playoffs. I called up Thomas Jackson, a rookie catcher, and he did VERY well for me. I have high hopes for him.
I'll let you know about my off-season moves for this upcoming year in my next post...

Off-season moves for my A's...

Traded Eric Chavez since I wasn't going to be able to resign him at the end of this season, to the Cubs for Corey Patterson. With Patterson being younger and cheaper than Mark Kotsay, I traded him to allow Patterson to play center. Scott Hatteberg retired, and I traded Esteban German and signed Warren Morris to be my utility infielder. I wanted more offense and German had batted .211 and .194 the past two years, both with over 200 at-bats. I signed Fernando Tatis to replace Chavez at 3rd. He was the best of what was out there, and he's done it before. I'm not expecting huge contributions from him, but he's cheap, he'll work for one year (I hope), and who knows? I may catch lightning in a bottle with him...

I wanted to sign Nick Neugeberger, who had decent lifetime stats at 13-9 with a 3.79 ERA. Plus, he's only 25, which is 7 years younger than Mark Redman, who was coming off what I believed to be a career year at 18-9. So, I traded Redman to Detroit and released Jermaine Dye, who had hit only .252 and .245 in the two seasons I had him, with a combined 34 doubles, 24 homers and 76 RBI. For the money I was paying him, I wasn't getting the kind of production it warranted. With the money I saved on the trade and release, I was able to sign not only Neugeberger, but also Rod Beck... who may or may not help out my bullpen, but he's a minimal cost, and my bullpen is a bunch of young guys who are good pitchers, but young + good = inconsistency. Beck could help me there...

Typical Billy Beane-type wheeling and dealing!! *LOL* Looking for bargains under every rock!!

My starting rotation looks like this:

Barry Zito
Tim Hudson
Rich Harden
Mario Ramos
Nick Neugeberger

My bullpen:

Pat Lidge
Salvador Hernandez
Chad Harville
Nick Mabry
Rod Beck
Arthur Rhodes

Infield:

1b- Billy McMillon
2b- Mark Ellis
Ss- Chip Myers
3b- Fernando Tatis

Outfield:

Lf- Eric Byrnes
Cf- Corey Patterson
Rf- Bobby Kielty
Dh- Erubiel Durazo

Bench:

Adam Melhuse
Thomas Jackson
Warren Morris
Hank Mondesi

My catcher is a platoon between Melhuse and Castro, with Jackson spelling them at times. Morris can play any infield position, Melhuse can play 1st or 3rd when he's not catching, and Mondesi, a rookie, can play 1st or the outfield. Melhuse can also play a corner outfield spot if I need him. Not a deep bench, but a little versitility...

So... what do you guys think? Can my A's compete in the rugged AL West this upcoming season, or will the youth do me in?
