Ratings must be pretty stingy again if Ronald Steele is only an 81. He's a top 10 PG in the country this year.

Duke will be a bitch to play online I am sure with Reddick and Williams down low to grab boards. If you get either in foul trouble they'd be fucked.

College Hoops 2K6 Hands-On
Put us in, coach! We hit the floor with the latest build of 2K's college basketball sim.
It's long been said that the NBA is a me-first take on basketball, while NCAA college basketball is more of a traditional form of the sport--a hearkening back to the days when teammates were, you know, friendly, and people passed the ball a bit. For the past few years, the development team at 2K Sports has been honing in on defining the collegiate game as a separate entity from its NBA big brother, and its most recent attempt, College Hoops 2K6, further explores this territory. We got an updated hands-on look at the game, just a scant few weeks before the real NCAA season begins.

How long until March? College hoops can't get here fast enough.
While the NBA game is more about the superstars that dominate the course, it seems like the 2K folks are putting more of an emphasis on the guy who stands on the sidelines the entire game in 2K6: the head coach. In addition to featuring a host of real basketball head coaches in the game (2K6 game producers estimate they have roughly 85 percent of the currently active NCAA basketball coaches), the attributes of your created legacy mode coach will have a more active effect on your players' progressions than ever before.

Two coach attributes in particular--charisma and discipline--have tangible effects on your players, thanks to some expanded player attributes, such as focus and confidence. For example, as a player moves throughout a season, his focus and confidence will ebb and flow depending on factors such as playing time. If the player feels like he's not getting enough minutes, he might let you know about it. From there you'll have a few options. First, you can answer his request by giving him what he wants: more time on the hardwood. Barring that, you can call your player in for a pep talk to give him an immediate boost. Be warned, however, that you can only use 10 pep talks in a single season, so you'll likely want to save them for big games, not for when your whiny freshman walk-on shooting guard is acting petulant.

As a coach, your efficiency in attributes such as charisma and discipline will dictate how much success you'll have helping your player out with his confidence and focus attributes, respectively. In turn, once that player takes the hard court, the difference between a confident and focused player and a meek, sulking boy will be marked and obvious. So you'll likely have considerably more success with the former making plays.

Other coach-centric options during a game are the coach's clipboard, which is a quick and easy way to access your tactics during time-outs. Instead of pausing the game to cycle through menus to get to your defensive and offensive sets, the coach's clipboard pops up automatically so you can make adjustments right there. One aspect in particular, known as "points of emphasis," are of special importance in the game. They cover four specific areas of your game: ball control, rebounding, defense, and shot selection. Choosing one of these points of emphasis will give your team a boost in its relative attribute. Choose "ball control," for example, and your team will be less apt to turn the ball over. Once again, your created coach's ratings will affect the amount of boost granted to your team during these coaching sessions. If your coach has a high offensive rating, you'll have greater success choosing "shot selection" as a point of emphasis than you might if you chose "rebounding," for example.

Coaching will be more important than ever to ensuring your team's success.
The off-the-court activities in 2K6 will be deeper as well, thanks to some new recruiting twists that look to improve on last year's legacy mode. Recruiting, of course, is probably the most important job of every coach in the NCAA, but the amount of information that a player must deal with in many collegiate sports games when recruiting can be overwhelming. In College Hoops 2K6, the developer has sought to make things easier on the player by including a target list that will let you track up to 15 players you hope to recruit to your team. This list of 15 can include any combination of talent, including, perhaps, a handful of "sure things" for when you're just starting out; a couple of ambitious picks (hey, you might get lucky); and even a few five-star "dream signings" (for when the stars align perfectly). As you progress through your season, you'll be able to keep tabs on each of these recruits' interest levels, and you can make adjustments accordingly.

The idea, according to the 2K folks, is to give the player more options when recruiting. If you're a total control freak, you can closely monitor each recruit in your lineup from week to week to see how the prospects for signing him shape up. If you prefer to be more hands-off during some points of the season--you know, so you can prepare for the games happening right now--the producers said they strove to make sure the recruiting artificial intelligence (in the form of your hired assistant coaches, whom you can assign to automatically keep up recruiting chores) will make smart recruiting decisions from week to week based on the priorities on your target list. Considering you can now begin recruiting players as young as high school freshmen, 2K6 gives you the kind of hands-off control that should be an important factor in helping you consistently keep up the recruiting pressure.

Camp Value

Another new twist on the recruiting trail comes with the introduction of training camps that the players on your target list will be entering. There are three camps to choose from: elite, advanced, and intermediate. And only the best players in the land will be attending the advanced and elite camps, so as you start out in 2K6's legacy mode, you'll likely want to hit the intermediate camp to follow the players on your list. Camp activities come in two flavors: scrimmage games where you can see the player in action in five-on-five situations and a huge number of drills that will give you a more focused look at some of a player's abilities. Two drills we checked out were the fast break and the knockout ones. The fast break drill puts you in a three-on-two situation on both offense and defense while knockout has your player standing in line while waiting his turn to shoot a basket. Make it and you knock out the player behind you in line--with the ultimate goal of being the last man standing. There are many more drills to check out, and as such, the entire camp feature looks to bring a different flavor to the legacy mode.

Teams like Kennesaw State and North Florida make their ways in to the game as well.
As you make your way through a 40-year career in legacy mode, you'll be racking up legacy points, which will provide a gauge for your success as a virtual coach. A coach with lots of wins will earn a certain amount of legacy points, while a coach with lots of quality wins and tournament victories will likely do even better. Other factors worked into legacy points include how quickly you nab a number one recruit, how quickly your player's progress, and so on. At the end of your career, your legacy points total will be a nice indicator of your success as a coach, not to mention great for bragging rights against your buddies.

In terms of control and tempo, 2K6 feels similar to last year's game. This is a college game, after all, and the pace at some points can be remarkably slower than what you might be used to from the pros. Dual player control returns, and the shot stick and strip-and-rip system make appearances from NBA 2K6. Even the 2K6 free-throw system is like in the NBA game. The aggressive modifier system, executed with the trigger and face buttons, lets you pull off dramatic offensive moves, such as dunks and alley-oops. The streamlined substitution system lets you call for quick substitutions by holding down the triggers during dead-ball fouls without having to back out to a pause menu to make adjustments. You can even make specific zone adjustments in any of the game's 10 half-court and three full-court zone sets with an easy-to-use menu system.

Presentation-wise, 2K6 has had to make some dramatic shifts since the loss of the ESPN license. The fruits of its labor come in the form of broadcast-style programming that shows up at specific times in a legacy mode season, such as a preseason show (which showcases the top 25 teams in the nation, as well as the prospective first and second team all-Americans) and, later on in the year, a Selection Sunday show that will give you all the scoop on who made it in to the Big Dance, and who just missed the cut. These broadcast-style shows are hosted by CBS personalities Greg Gumbel and Clark Kellogg (while game commentary duties are shared by Verne Lundquist, Bill Raftery, and Bonnie Bernstein). The commentary in the shows has a nice sense of flow to it, providing you pretty insightful information on practically every team discussed on the show. Finally, in a sport where authenticity counts so much, it's nice to know that there are no fictional teams in 2K6. In fact, a number of new schools have been added to the list this time around--including teams such as North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Kennesaw State, and North Florida.

With tournaments being such a huge part of the college hoops scene, 2K6 looks to up the ante on real-life tourneys in its game. Authentic basketball tournaments, such as the BCA Classic, the Preseason NIT, BP Top of the World Classic, Pepsi Blue & Gold Classic, the Great Alaska Shootout, and more, will all be found in the game, and we've even heard word of an online Pontiac tournament hosted by 2K sometime in early 2006. More details on that to come, so stay tuned.

Points of emphasis will boost your team's attributes in crucial game-time situations.
We've only had a few hours to check out 2K6 so far, but we like what we've seen of it. Though next-generation pro basketball seems to be at the forefront of many folks' minds these days, there's still plenty of good college hoops to be found on the "old" consoles. We'll have more on College Hoops 2K6, including a full review of the game, when it's released in November.

The way I like it is vertical but zoom in it about twice. The sideview distorts my vision of the other side and I go out of bounds or can't shoot 3's from that direction. I know it's weird, but I play my way, you play yours.

sideview gives you more of a feeling like you're watching on TV, you get to see the crowd better too. The baseline view is best though if you want to be able to see all of your players on the court at once.

yeah thats pretty much the reason why i like it so much i think, plus i just think its more comfortable. I dont know how anyone plays with the "follow" view, espcially when the ball gets turned over and the game pauses for a second so the camera can do a 360 degree turn.

I hear that every damn year for NCAA. My friends all said it didn't come til that Thursday instead of the Monday. So they thought I was lying. Well, I got the game so they came over and I had it in my bag and they were like "Whoa that doesn't come out for 3 days!" and I'm like "that's cuz you douchebags ordered it from K-Mart like a bitch". I think that was for either '04 or '05, I can't remember.

Yeah it's pissing me off that the game still hasn't come out and schools are starting to play exhibition games already this week. Right now, Gamestop has the game listed to release on 11/14. EB Games has it coming out on 11/7. Hopefully at least somewhere they have it this Tuesday.

This is what the guy said regarding the push back:

"Actually a lot can be fixed in a week. During the last week of development we probably eliminated a very large number of annoying little bugs. And a week at the end of a dev cycle usually plays out like this:
7 days (not 5), at an average of 12-15 hours a day. Now, I'm no mathologist or anything, but if there are 10 people working those hours that's over 800 hours of work. I'd hardly call that useless. I guarantee we sleep very little the last month or so...

As far as an answer about a ship date, you guys have a better idea than I do. I get it out the door and the rest is a combination of manufacturing, distribution and retailers. None of which am I given any "inside information". Honestly, I try to tell you guys everything I know, but I have no idea when you'll see it on the shelf."

Now this game has been delayed til the 21st. What the fuck?! I've heard all kinds of rumors. From a glitch where you don't hear the announcers til halftime, so they're trying to get that fixed, to that it's just issues with shipping that's holding this game back. Either way, I'm really starting to get pissed. I came this close yesterday to actually buying MM 2006 since I wanted a college hoops game so badly, and that was when I thought the game was still coming out on the 14th!

EDIT: I'm still praying that this isn't true. The guy at EB Games had it on his computer saying the game would arrive the 14th and be available no later than the 15th. Hopefully that stays true. On the EB Games website they still have it as the 14th, but at Gamestop.com they've already switched it back to November 21.

Got NBA Live this weekend to hold me over, is pretty good. It looks like this game is going to be fantastic. I live minutes from Kennesaw St. so that'll be the team I play with definately. I liked last years game for a while. Football is my mainstay though. The basketball season is too long to play a lot of seasons.

I loved last year's game until I noticed how ridiculous the sim engine was. Almost completely lacking in realism. Everyone on every roster was jacking up 3s. Didn't seem to have much to do with settings at all. That really ruined it for me.

You had to adjust the sliders to make the shooting tendencies of each team realistic.

wow this game looks beautiful in motion. I just saw a play where my guy drives to the basket and the defender steps in a second too late gets barrelled over and goes sliding on his back across the floor. It looked amazingly realistic. The little things like that make this game awesome.

Some impressions... rebounding is a lot harder. In previous versions you could pretty much just take control of your big man off a missed shot, press the jump button and he'd jump for the ball. This year it seems to be a lot harder, you really have to look where the rebound marker is and try to box out or reach it first. The other teams have been killing me on the glass but I'm comign around. Also the fast break is really improved. You're players actually have speed and when you get a fast break its really satisfying.

You could still play, but the sound was messed up. I haven't investigated the import glitch yet, but I'll soon find out. Also, I must've been mistaken, but I thought you could make zone subsitutions from the timeout. The only way I could do it was from the pause menu. Also, to have the college music, you have to go to the 2k beats, and change it from there, but, there is only like 10 songs. Maybe if you don't mess with the soundtrack, the sound doesn't freeze up.

I also noticed from the videos that I've downloaded that they play the wrong fight songs for certain schools. For example, in a UNC home game they play the fucking Kansas fight song. Honestly, for such a great gameplay product the people at 2K sports have no fucking clue about how to re-create the ATMOSPHERE of college hoops. At least EA features student sections that jump up and down, a home-court advantage meter, and REAL fight songs for each of the schools.

I've seen the shot attempt statistic fuck-up online and offline. I'm the type that aggressively rebounds and attempts to block shots with the player myself. With this type of play, I tend to get alot of goaltends and give my opponent plenty of foul shot opportunities. I think if you get your shot goaltended or get a 3 point play, then it does something to your shot attempts.

P.S. - this game is still the G.O.A.T.

Carlbunga2001

Yeah, the import glitch is in the game. Don't worry though XBox players, last year they had this problem, and they patched when you went online with NBA 2K. So, if you've got Live, you're set.

I don't think the stat problem is that bad really. All it does is add 15 attempts to some random player. Unless you're a stat-hound I don't think it'll bother you. It seems to happen early in the game, if at all. So if it bothers you that much you can just restart.

The fight songs listed are:

New Hampshire
Maryland
BC Eagles
Rutgers
UC-Sacremento
Colorado
Iowa State
Kansas
Texas Tech
Southern Miss
Butler
WS-Green Bay
Ball State
Bowling Green
C Michigan
W Michigan
Indiana State
Northern Iowa
Colorado State
Arizona
Kentucky
UL Lafayette
New Mexico
La Tech
San Jose State
SMU

Weird list. All of them are around a minute or less but Maryland's is like 6 minutes long [rock]. I don't know if they are correct or anything though.

Online the game is almost as fun as playing the legacy.

I have played with Texas against Duke, Boston College, and Memphis twice. It's all bout strategy, your playing style matching with your talent, and stick skills instead of just who has the better team.

Do you play better with a run-n-gun style of offense? half-court pounding it inside? great physical defense turning into offense? or all 3?

That's exactly why I love this game and believe it shyts on nba2k6 and ea's garbage azz game. You actually get rewarded for playing great user man to man defense (no lucky azz shots in the face of outstanding man defense) and rebounding and blocking the ball ya damn self.

Also, the recruitment of HS underclassmen is the best addition to the legacy. I only have 1 scholarship in the 1st year of my legacy with future Hall of Famer Coach Papa LoneStar with Long Island. I signed a 2* 6'2" 190 PG in the early signing period and now I can concetrate on the juniors and sophomores out of HS. True, it might be hard to only get 1 scholarship to a talent challenged basketball team, but it helps to get a head start on your 2007-2009 classes........I already have 2 HS junior 4* 7 footers with 79% and 75% interest in the Blackbirds (1-4 (beat Princeton at home and losses to Duke in the NIT, @Providence, @Georgetown, and @Virginia Tech), I haven't even played my 1st conference game yet :D

I really like how if you try to get a home game against a power conference team, it tells you that you are not prestigious enough to host a non-conference opponent of this stature. I have a feeling that I will finish run 40+ seasons in this legacy. They are just too throwed with this one. :D

The dunking on this game is pretty ridiculous. I swear, people online will dunk every play. Its pretty gay that cheesing punks can ruin a game. Its pretty pathetic that everybody who I've played has never shot a mid range jumper.

Carlbunga2001

Well, its kind of hard to judge what is cheese, and what isn't. But, when you run around in circles with your guy in the paint so you can dunk every play is lame. Hell, if he ran back door cuts, or give and go, pick and roll, some kind of play to dunk, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Fact, I'd probably congratulate them. Basically what I am saying is, don't play like a jackass.

I've tried that. Three times out of four (at least in my case) a blocking foul was called, and I had perfect position. I've tried swatting it, I've tried running a 2-3 and camping with my center, I've tried 1-1-3, I've tried 1-1-2, nothing seems to work.

anyone else finding this game extremely hard? and it's not even like i suck, my players keep missing layups which can be frustrating. and fastbreaks? forget about it. i'm running down the court with rondo and people are catching up to me, challenging my layups. shouldn't be like that if you ask me.

It's year round like 2k5. It's definitely not as easy as NCAA Football (don't know much about March Madness) but it's deeper in what you can do. This year you can recruit high school underclassmen (great touch, imo). There are an enormous amount of recruits rated on a A-F scale on their skills (offense, defense, shooting, etc.). It keeps up with how many times you've visited a recruit, scouted their games, etc. and limits you on how many times you can do those actions.

I don't think it does because I don't think there is a "Coaching Changes" screen during the offseason of an open legacy. So you should be okay there. But there may be an issue with not being able to continue after you max out all of your coaching abilities and still have extra points left with nowhere to put them. Supposedly then it will no longer let you continue until you find a place to put those points, but there's nowhere else to place them.

One thing that needs to be added is some sort of prestige factor. I started my legacy at North Florida. The first season I went 6-19, second season 8-18. My third season I went 11-14 and actually got to the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament, but during the offseason I get fired. Naturally you'd think that I showed improvement each year so I wouldn't be fired, especially from a team that is just becoming a DIA team this year.

My third season I went 11-14 and actually got to the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament, but during the offseason I get fired. Naturally you'd think that I showed improvement each year so I wouldn't be fired, especially from a team that is just becoming a DIA team this year.
could be the years before you got there they did better. so they got upset you did worse. plus, 3 losing records in a row wouldn't bode well for your job.

This was in the first 3 years of legacy. Also UNF's first three years as a DIA basketball team [laugh]

Ok thanks. Cant wait till XMas. lol

And now it looks like that issue with maxing out your coaching ability points really isn't an issue. So you don't have to worry about that either.

I have no complaints, but I haven't really edited the rosters much.
