I immensely enjoy video games, football in particular. That will comes as no surprise to anyone on these forums, especially here in the dynasty section. Whether it is a person who writes incredible storylines, edits amazing videos, or like me, is more nuts and bolts about game summaries and stats, we all look forward to playing our games and creating our dynasty reports. Well, I got sick of the Skyhawks, honestly, couldn’t take the 71-0 loss to LSU, followed by Georgia dropping 123 on me. So I decided I would go back, and go with one of the other suggestions made originally when I decided to do a dynasty, the Vanderbilt Commodores. As I prepared all the info for Mandy’s Dynasty Manager, I was reminded of a story that touched all college football fans last Christmas.

On the morning of December 25th, Kwane Doster was a happy-go-lucky 21 year old, looking forward to returning to Vanderbilt University following the holidays with his family. He came from the rough part of town, close to Nebraska Avenue in Tampa, FL. I wonder, did he get up that morning like a lot of us college males did (or do) at the time, and try his hand at a couple of games of NCAA or Madden? Maybe he had run himself through the virtual paces, and was living his dream after being drafted highly out of Vanderbilt, and was starting for his hometown Buccaneers. Or maybe, he spent the morning with his Mom and younger brother, relating tales of gridiron successes, and failures. Maybe he emphasized to Jermaine (brother), that while football success was enjoyable, he needed to pursue his studies and earn a degree with the talent he was blessed with, trying to positively affect the future of his family. Or maybe, he was just enjoying the peace of Christmas morning with his loved ones.

All that changed on the evening of the 25th and the wee hour of the 26th. While out enjoying the holidays with close friends, trouble started. Words were exchanged between the driver of the car in which Kwane was a passenger and another vehicle. Words escalated into threats, and police reports indicate that Rodney “Roscoe” Roman opened fire on the car that Doster was a passenger in, striking him in the chest. At 2:19 AM on the day after Christmas, Kwane was dead.

A promising life, cut down early. Kwane was on pace to get his degree from Vanderbilt in Human and Organizational Development. He had aspirations of playing in the NFL, but was also preparing for the alternative. On his college application, Kwane wrote that he wanted to be successful “"so that I can be an example to my brother. I want this more than anything. I want to start a new legacy." Not the glory of the NFL, or even the rush of playing football on Saturdays, which I’m sure were important to him as well, but a chance to show his brother there was a better way than that which had surrounded their youth.

In real life, the Commodores are in the midst of a special season right now, regardless of how it unfolds in the end.

Coach Bobby Johnson says that his team is not playing for Doster. He thinks things like that cheapen Kwane’s memory. He won’t deny that Doster is a part of what is happening though.

Some people however, say it’s more than that.

"I'll be sitting there and he'll just pop into my head," says linebacker Moses Osemwegie. "He's with us."

"The truth is, they're 2-0 because their line is blocking and quarterback Jay Cutler is producing," says (Mario) Moore (Guard – Vandy Basketball). "But, yeah, Dot (Doster’s nickname) has a lot to do with it."
"Vanderbilt does not go 2-0," whispers Larry Leathers, the man in charge of media relations for the football team. "They don't."
I’ll just say maybe Doster is looking down and smiling.

If I bored all of you I apologize. Video games are fun, and sometimes I think we take ourselves a little too seriously, and maybe I’m guilty of this here. Maybe Kwane wasn’t the angel he is being portrayed to be. He was however successfully overcoming the odds, and was on his way to winning with the cards he was dealt and I wanted to take just a moment to honor him. The Ole Miss game this year was deemed “Kwane Doster Day” at VU. I’m just a little old dynasty writer, but in mine, no one will ever wear the number 1 on their jersey again. It’s Kwane’s. He’ll also hold the 70th roster spot throughout this dynasty.

Vanderbilt set up a fund to help the family with funeral costs, and which will be used to award scholarships in the future. A link to it is found below.

Beautiful rsump. But what if a recruit comes in wearing #1? I dont think you can edit that in the middle of a dynasty. I'll be following. RIP Kwane.

Thanks, wuffie.

Well, if a recruit comes in wearing #1, and I can't edit the jersey number, I'll cut him, period. I don't care if he is a 5 star QB, if he can't respect my self-imposed rule for this dynasty, he won't be a Commodore.

Johnson Promoted, Former SEC Rival Coach Hired to Replace

AP - July 15, 2005

In an unexpected announcement today out of Nashville, Commodores Head Coach Bobby Johnson was promoted to Athletic Director. The university had eliminated the position prior to the 2003 football season, and tried an experiment where the program was grouped in with the Office of Student Athletics, Recreation and Wellness under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Brock Williams.

Chancellor E. Gordon Gee had attempted the move to alleviate growing concerns over the direction of the Commodores' various athletic programs. After repeated concerns from alumni and students with the new direction, stating it seemed a precursor to Vanderbit dropping out of the SEC, and possibly Division 1A sports altogether, Gee issued the following statement.

"There have been serious concerns about the Univerity's commitment to athletics since Todd Turner was dismissed 2 years ago. At the time, we felt we needed to go in a different direction, to bring the student-athlete more in line with the rest of our students. We feel that (Bobby) Johnson has proven his ability to maintain a direct correlation to success on the field, and success in the classroom. If it were not for his acceptance of the position, we would not have made this change. His role in bringing all sports to the same level of the Commodore football program are paramount here."

Since arriving prior to the 2002 football season, Johnson has struggled on the field of play with an overall record of 6-29. However, he has been the most competitive coach at Vanderbilt in decades with ten of his losses by a touchdown or less, including at least four very winnable games last year where losses were by a field goal or less. A few breaks here or there could have left the Commodores with a 6-5 record. While that may be stretch, a couple of those games should have been won, and a team accustomed to winning probably would have done so. 22 consecutive losing seasons is a difficult habit to overcome. Johnson doesn't offer excuses, however.

"We were becoming more competitive each year, but we were still failing to execute. On the field, and on the sidelines, we were being outmaneuvered and I accept full responsibility for failing to bring the team to a higher level of competitiveness. I hope in my new role, I will be able to improve the standings of all of the athletic programs here at Vanderbilt, and believe with the players on the team, and the hiring of our new coach, we are poised on the brink of great things."

When it comes to players, Johnson leaves the cupboard anything but bare. Redshirt senior Jay Cutler will lead the Commodore attack from under center, and is an Athlon Sports pre-season All-SEC 1st team quarterback. WR Erik Davis garnered 2nd team All-SEC at the WR Position, and OLB Moses Osemwegie is a 2nd team All-American. There are holes to fill, due to the loss of some of the most talented players in Commodore history, including DE Jovan Haye, CB Dominique Morris and FB Matthew Tant. The tragic death of former SEC Freshman of the Year Kwane Doster leaves a hole at RB, though Jeff Jennings and Cassen Jackson-Garrison should handle the rushing duties adequately.

Which begs the question, when a coach who has begun to turn the corner with your football program must be replaced, where do you go to find his replacement? In this case, the Commodores have gone to the injured reserve list. "We wanted someone who knew the SEC, the East in particular," said Johnson. "We went with someone we had faced on the oppsite sidelines for years, and we are pleased to announce the hiring of David Cutcliffe."

Coach Cutcliffe joins the Commodores following a wild off-season ride. After being dismissed by Ole Miss following a disappointing 2004 campaign in which the Rebels went 4-7, he was hired almost immediately by new Irish Head Coach Charlie Weis as the QB and Assistant Head Coach. Following a March heart bypass surgery, Cutcliffe resigned his position at Notre Dame, stating he would take off the 2005 season to improve physically, as well as to improve professionally. Johnson was quick to state that while Cutcliffe would be the Head Coach, the 2005 season would be a joint effort between himself and the new coach. "The university is fully aware of concerns about Coach Cutcliffe's health, and I will be providing support this year in a role with the football team. It will be (cutcliffe's) team, but we understand he needs time to fully recover, and are looking at this with an eye toward the future."

Cutcliffe was unavailable for comment at press time, but Johnson did state that a press conference woud be held to introduce the new coach at a later date.

Coach Cutcliffe becomes Vanderbilt's 27th Head Coach following a 6 year stint as coach of Ole Miss, in which he went 44-29 (.603), while joining Johnny Vaught as the only Rebels coach to win at least seven games in his first five seasons at the school, including a 10-3 finish in 2003 as Cotton Bowl champions with a final ranking of #13. This was following 17 seasons on the Univerity of Tennessee's coaching staff, including the final six as Offensive Coordinator.

Cutcliffe has coached eight players who became first round draft picks, including two #1 overall picks in brothers Eli and Peyton Manning. Under Cutcliffe's guidance, the elder Manning set 42 school records, and passed for 11,201 yards (first all-time in the SEC). Eli surpassed the broken records mark, while setting 47 school records and becoming the SEC's fifth all time leading passer with 10,119.

He also led Heath Shuler and National Championship QB Tee Martin. Considered one of the best offensive minds in college football, Cutcliffe saw his Rebels stun heavily favored Texas Tech 35-18 in the 1998 Independence Bowl.

While serving on the Tennessee staff, Cutcliffe helped the Volunteers compile a 154-46-7 record while winning five SEC championships, and one national title. In his 17 years at Tennessee the Vols went to 16 bowl games, winning 11 times, rolling up five straight bowl victories during one stretch (1985-90 seasons) - and seven times finishing in the final AP Top 25.

In 1998, he received the Frank Broyles Award, given annually to the nation's top assistant coach, and was a finalist in 1997.

Born Sept. 16, 1954, in Birmingham, Ala. David Nelson Cutcliffe attended the University of Alabama and received his bachelor of science degree in health, physical education and recreation in 1976. He returned to his alma mater, Banks (Ala.) High School, as an assistant coach for four years - then was named head coach in 1980. His teamsreached the Alabama state high school playoffs three times as an assistant and in both his seasons as head coach.

Cutcliffe is married to the former Karen Oran of Harriman, Tenn., and they have three children -- Chris, Katie and Emily.

Cutcliffe Statement

AP - August 1, 2005

David Cutcliffe, new head coach for the Vanderbilt Commodores, issued a statement today regarding the tumultuous offseason which saw him fired, hired, resigning, and hired again.

"First, I would like to thank Athletic Director Johnson and Vanderbilt University for showing confidence in me so soon after my health concerns earlier this year. I was first contacted by the Commodores shortly after my resignation from Notre Dame. They have been extremely gracious while allowing me to contemplate what was best for me and my family. I love the great state of Tennessee, and look forward to once again lining up on the sidelines in the SEC.

After many consultations with my physician, I have been cleared to coach again. There are some limitations currently in place, and the university has been able to look at these and agree to assistance in my inaugural season. Unique opportunities call for unique solutions, and I believe with the help of the remaining staff, which I will retain in its entirety, and former Head Coach Bobby Johnson, we will make it through what could be a difficult start.

I would like to thank Coach Charlie Weis for the opportunity to work with him this offseason, and hope no ill will is harbored by the Irish faithful. Notre Dame is a fine institution and I wish Coach Weis and his players nothing but success, however with my health concerns, I felt it best to let them move on. Gratefully, those issues appear to be behind me now.

Many have asked me about my feelings towards the Rebels. I left a fine group of young men there to play football, and I will miss having the opportunity to lead them. To the university's administration, you can kiss my fat white ass. The way I was dismissed was sneaky and underhanded, and this team was looking to improve greatly this year. If given an opportunity, I will ram the ball down Ed Oregeron's uppity West Coast butt. You think you were hot stuff at USC? Welcome to the SEC, where the boys are men, and the football players eat California pansies for breakfast.

Coach Johnson has left me an incredible group of talent to work with, and I hope I am able to live up to the lofty expecations provided by the Commodores. The SEC East is the toughest division in the toughest conference in the nation today. With the likes of Florida, Georgia and Tennessee, and Steve Spurrier returning to the college ranks this year at South Carolina, you could find 4 of your Top 25 schools coming from this division. I hope to add Vanderbilt's name to that list very soon.

While I regret that I have not been available for questions, with very little time left to prepare, I have been forced to truncate the implementation of my offensive schemes, and that has left very little time off of the football field.

We open the season in 30 days against the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest, led by RB Chris Barclay in what is being called the "Battle of the Black & Gold". With home and home series set up over the next several seasons, we look forward to a new rivalry with them.

My goals are simple for this team. I want to be in bowl contention, year in and year out. I expect nothing less from this team, even in this, my first year. This team has the talent to compete with the nation's elite, and given a little time, we will be a dominant force in the SEC, while maintaining our standards of academic excellence.

Thank you."

Heisman Favorites Announced

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/Pre%20Season/Heisman.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/Pre%20Season/MattLeinart.jpg
QB Matt Leinart - USC
Senior

Heisman Trophy-winning Leinart, the left-handed record-setting 2-time All-American quarterback, should again be America's top player as he starts for his third season as a senior in 2005. He will attempt to be just the second player ever to win a second Heisman and also is in line for the Davey O'Brien and Unitas Awards, as well as his third season as an All-American. He is on the 2005 Maxwell Award watch list. He had minor outpatient surgery to address tendonitis in his left (throwing) elbow in late January of 2005, which sidelined him in 2005 spring practice.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/Pre%20Season/ReggieBush.jpg
RB Reggie Bush - USC
Junior

The electrifying, multi-purpose Bush, who brings flash and dash with his incredible speed and moves, once again will be used in a variety of roles as a senior in 2005: at tailback, split out as a receiver and returning punts and kicks. He's a leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy and Doak Walker Award, as well as to repeat as an All-American first teamer. He is on the 2005 Maxwell Award watch list. He had arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder prior to 2005 spring practice.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/Pre%20Season/AdrianPeterson.jpg
RB Adrian Peterson - Oklahoma
Sophomore

In 2004, Peterson finished second in the Heisman voting, highest ever for a freshman. He looks to duplicate that success this season in leading the Oklahoma Sooners. With exceptional quickness and great strength, Peterson can run around you or run over you. He is on the 2005 Maxwell Award watch list and looks to be a contender for the Doak Walker Award, and looks to continue his career as a consensus All American. Only a sophomore, Peterson is already #7 on Oklahoma's career rushing list.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/Pre%20Season/VinceYoung.jpg
QB Vince Young - Texas
Senior

One of the nation’s top quarterbacks who combines a strong arm with great foot speed and athletic ability. Young is listed on the watch list for Walter Camp Player of the Year, Maxwell Award, and Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award watch lists in 2005. Is Currently #8 on Texas's career passing list and is the all time leading rushing quarterback in Longhorn's history. Is 17-2 as the starter at Texas. In 2004, earned All Big XII honorable mention by the AP. Is a preseason second team All American behind Matt Leinart of USC.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/Pre%20Season/TedGinn.jpg
WR Ted Ginn, Jr. - Ohio State
Sophomore

Electrifying young player, who is a threat to score each time he touches the football. Ginn is coming off a sensational true freshman year in which he began the season as a defensive back, but wound up playing offense and garnering national attention with his explosive scoring ability as both a receiver and a punt-return specialist. He further demonstrated his versatility in the Alamo Bowl by subbing at quarterback when the Buckeyes were down to one experienced signal caller. Ted heads into his sophomore season regarded as one of the most dangerous weapons in college football.

SEC Preview

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/Logos/SEC/Tennessee.gif

You almost can see the gleam in coach Phillip Fulmer's eyes. He has a good old-fashioned Tennessee ball club on his hands, and he knows it. Everybody is healthy, the offseason headaches are over and it's time to play ball. Playing great defense, running the football and not turning the ball over is the way Tennessee won the national championship in 1998, and it is the way the Vols want to play football this year.

Gerald Riggs Jr. is back after rushing for 1,107 yards last year despite splitting carries with Cedric Houston. The offensive line is solid, and there are two ready and able quarterbacks in Erik Ainge and Rick Clausen. There is quality and depth at wide receiver.

The defense should be the best in Knoxville since the 1998 championship team. The Vols will have one of the best front sevens in America, led by All-American tackle Jesse Mahelona and linebackers Kevin Simon and Omar Gaither. Opponents will find it almost impossible to run the ball. The safety position could be the only weakness as future NFL star Jason Allen moved from safety to cornerback after leading the league in tackles last season.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/Logos/SEC/LSU.gif

If new head coach Les Miles didn't already realize it when he took over at LSU he probably now knows that he has one of the best coaching jobs in the country. Yes the fans are rabid and yes the expectation level is always over the top, but Louisiana is the fourth-best recruiting state in the country. If Miles can put a fence around the state as Nick Saban did, he will have a chance to compete for the national championship every year.

This program has 18 returning starters from a team that won nine games one year after winning the national championship. Along with Tennessee, the Tigers have the most talent in the conference. If they can just get great leadership and decision-making out of the quarterback position they will play for the SEC championship with a chance to go to the Rose Bowl.

There is not a more talented quarterback in the country than redshirt sophomore JaMarcus Russell. However, because of his inconsistency last season he split time with Marcus Randall and then Matt Flynn. It always concerns me when the most talented guy doesn't separate from the pack. If either of these guys doesn't take charge of the offense, or if LSU is forced turn to the nation's No. 1 QB recruit Ryan Perilloux, then all talk of a conference title – much less a national championship – is off the table.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/Logos/SEC/Florida.gif

The SEC's best passing attack again will be led by the SEC's best quarterback, Chris Leak. And he will be throwing to the SEC's best group of wide receivers. If ex-Utah head coach Urban Meyer successfully can add his spread running game the offense could be unstoppable. Someone still needs to step up at running back in the battle between DeShawn Wynn, Skyler Thornton and Markus Manson. Defense is the bigger question mark at Florida. It's not so much whether it will be good but rather whether it will be good enough to win the tough SEC East.

The biggest changes Meyer has brought to Florida have been in discipline and attitude. He demands that the players do the right things on and off the field, and that has been apparent – there have been zero disciplinary problems in Gainesville this offseason. The players have the right attitude, believing that if they do what their coach tells them, they will win and they will win big. I'm beginning to believe it, too.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/Logos/SEC/Georgia.gif

It will be interesting to see how coach Mark Richt will react in his first year at Georgia without quarterback David Greene. They only went 42-10 together. Senior D.J. Shockley finally will take over, and his mobility should add another dimension – running – to the Bulldog offense. That looks to be the strength of the offense this season. All five linemen return from last year along with tight end Leonard Pope and three big-time running backs. There is talent at wide receiver, but it is undeveloped. Look for the run game to carry the load until the young receivers can learn what they're doing.

Georgia loses three of its best-ever players on defense in end David Pollack, linebacker Odell Thurman and safety Thomas Davis, but nobody reloads on defense better than Georgia. The Bulldogs defense was ranked in the top 10 last year, and it will be ranked in the top 10 this year. In fact, defense is becoming the trademark of a Mark Richt team – that, and winning 10 games a year.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/Logos/SEC/Alabama.gif

Coach Mike Shula took over the Tide program under almost impossible circumstances with NCAA probation and scholarship reductions. That is why he was given a contract extension in spite of going 10-15 over his first two years.

Alabama returns nine starters from the nation's second-best defense, and there is no reason why it won't be even better this season. That is saying a lot considering this defense ranked either first or second in the SEC in turnovers caused, first downs allowed and red zone defense.

The difference maker this year, though, will be the return of a healthy senior Brodie Croyle at quarterback. Alabama was 3-0 and averaging 42.6 points per game before he was injured last season. The Tide averaged just 18.5 points with him on the bench.

I look for Alabama to be the sleeper in the conference this year, with a chance to win seven regular-season games at worst and slide into the SEC championship game at best. It all falls on the shoulders of a healthy Brodie Croyle.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/Logos/SEC/Auburn.gif

Conventional wisdom says that with Auburn losing four first-round draft choices – including three from the offensive backfield – this should be a rebuilding year for the Tigers. But never underestimate head coach Tommy Tuberville. Tuberville has proven to be one of the best – and most unheralded – recruiters in the business, and there are plenty of fat, juicy pegs to fill into all the available holes.

Offensive coordinator Al Borges is sensational at putting his offensive pieces in the right places, and if the Tigers can average around 30 points per game they will have done their duty. Defensively, the loss of coordinator Gene Chizik would be devastating to most programs, but Tuberville cut his coaching teeth at Miami and Texas A&M putting together great defenses.

There won't be any drop-off in the defensive X-in' and O-in'. Not only will the defense be outstanding, but also the front seven will be even better than the one that led the Tigers to the No. 1 rank in scoring defense last season.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/Logos/SEC/SouthCarolina.gif

Steve Spurrier has taken over at South Carolina to see if his Cock & Fire offense can take the Gamecocks to the next level in the SEC. That is going to be quite a task, as reaching the next level requires South Carolina to win its fair share of games against East Division partners Tennessee, Georgia and Florida and also take care of rival Clemson.

To give you an idea of just how difficult that will be, consider that one of the best coaches in the business, Lou Holtz, just retired with a 33-37 record at USC (skewed somewhat by an 0-11 record in his first season). The Gamecocks also have only one 10-win season and three bowl victories in school history.

The good news is that Spurrier took both previous college football programs that he coached, Duke and Florida, to new levels. Holtz left a solid core of talent at South Carolina, and Spurrier will have something to work with. The defense, led by safety Ko Simpson, will have to carry the load until the ol' ball coach can find a quarterback who can run the offense.

Because of his ability to scheme victories with his offensive style, Spurrier definitely will bring winning seasons to South Carolina. Whether that includes winning the East Division or SEC title is an entirely different story. Look for the Gamecocks to go to a bowl this year and also upset some team that thought it would be going to the SEC championship.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/Logos/SEC/Arkansas.gif

Even though the Razorbacks will be breaking in a new quarterback for the first time in four years, the offense has a chance to be pretty good. QB Matt Jones has moved his arm and more importantly his legs to the NFL as a wide receiver. Sophomore Robert Johnson looks to be in line to take over. The running game should be strong and the receivers are talented. If Johnson shows that he can stand in the pocket, make his reads and throw accurately, there is no reason Arkansas shouldn't put a bunch of points on the board.

Defensively, head coach Houston Nutt paid a ton of money to bring in defensive coordinator Reggie Herring from North Carolina State, where his group ranked No. 1 nationally in total defense last year. I was on the coaching staff at Florida State when he was a linebacker, and there is not a more intense individual in football. Forget about personnel, the defense will play a whole lot harder and better just because of his presence.

Last year's 5-6 record had to be a real disappointment, and with the strength of the offense and the addition of Herring, the Razorbacks should be able to win more than they lose this year – just not by much.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/Logos/SEC/Vanderbilt.gif

The Commodores have not had a winning season since 1982, and you have to wonder when the losing streak is going to end. Bobby Johnson was 6-29 in his three years in Nashville, but is replaced by deposed Ole Miss coach David Cutcliffe. Even if the team can win a couple of more games this season, it's not going to be more than it loses.

Senior Jay Cutler is one of the best quarterbacks returning in the SEC. But without a sophisticated offense that suits a bunch of smart but athletically challenged teammates, he really doesn't have a chance to make a difference. Hopefully Cutcliffe can implement enough of his attack for the Commodores to put points on the board. Defensively, Vanderbilt just can't field enough quality athletes who can run and play in open space to compete in the SEC.

Best scenario: Beat non-conference cupcakes Middle Tennessee and Richmond and win the balance of the games against Wake Forest, Arkansas, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Kentucky. Unfortunately, that still gives the Commodores their 23rd consecutive losing season.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/Logos/SEC/OleMiss.gif

One has to wonder how in the world Mississippi could fire a fine coach like David Cutcliffe after one bad season. Regardless of the reason, the Rebels went out and got a bundle of adrenaline from the top program in America. Ed Orgeron not only coached the defensive line at Southern California but also served as the recruiting coordinator, and it is the latter qualification that is needed most at Mississippi. Coming off a 4-7 season, there just is not a lot of SEC-quality talent at Ole Miss.

If the players can pick up the new offensive and defensive schemes quickly, there are six or seven possible wins on the schedule. However, Rebel fans should not be discouraged if the win column doesn't get any higher than five.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/Logos/SEC/MississippiState.gif

When Sylvester Croom was named the head coach at Mississippi State he knew he had a lot of work to do. Last year's 3-8 record is an indication of just how difficult his job is going to be. The good news is that the season did include an impressive win over Florida and that 15 starters who understand the system are back. The bad news is that about a dozen kids who didn't fit into the Sylvester Croom way of doing things left the program.

The defense was poor last year, and the offense was even worse. Only time and athletes will get this program turned around – time, athletes and patience. The Bulldogs will do well to get four or five wins this year.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/Logos/SEC/Kentucky.gif

The only realistic goal for Kentucky this year is staying ahead of Vanderbilt in the East standings. East Carolina was the only other team in Division I-A that ended last season outside the top 100 in both offense and in defense. Ever since offensive guru Hal Mumme resigned as head coach because of NCAA violations, it seems the Wildcats have forgotten that his offensive genius was the key to their success. Kentucky must get back to running an offense that will do something unorthodox with the ball, like the passing attack of Mike Leach at Texas Tech or the running game of Paul Johnson at Navy do.

Kentucky cannot get the caliber of athlete it needs to compete in the SEC; the Wildcats must do something outside the box when it comes to coaching strategy. Head coach Rich Brooks, who had success at Oregon, must recognize that normal coaching strategies like playing hard-nosed defense and not turning over the ball will only get them closer losses in one of the toughest leagues in college football.

Vanderbilt Media Guide
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/2005MediaGuide1.jpg

Vaanderbilt finds itself in unfamiliar territory to begin the 2005 season, picked to finish ninth in the SEC. This is the first time in over a decade that the Commodores are not expected to finish dead last in the conference, and they believe the pieces have finally been assembled to make a leap into competitiveness.

The promotion of former Head Coach Bobby Johnson opened the door for a hiring that has pleasantly surprised ‘Dores faithful in David Cutcliffe. Long considered one of the top offensive minds in the country, Cutcliffe is especially adept at training QB’s, and this could allow senior Jay Cutler to blossom into a top prospect in next year’s NFL Draft.

Offense

Cutler leads a talented offensive attack from under center, and there is no lack of talent behind him on the offensive side of the ball. Senior WR Erik Davis is his number one threat to take the ball deep with his blinding speed, good size, and soft hands. Jeff Jennings and Cassen Jackson-Garrison will attempt to fill in the hole at running back left by the departure of Norval McKenzie and the tragic off-season death of Kwane Doster.

Blocking will be provided by a rotating offensive line, attempting to keep fresh bodies in at all time. The anchor of the line is senior guard Nigel Seaman, and he will be surrounded by what is considered to be the most talented all around offensive line that Vanderbilt has fielded in some time. The loss of tackle Justin Geisinger to the NFL hurts, but 6’7”, 315 pound Ryan King should slide into the left tackle spot with little trouble.

If the line does struggle early, Cutler has the mobility to move around in the pocket and scramble for yards. FB David Whittington might see some carries, but is primarily used as a blocking back. TE Dustin Dunning is also used primarily for blocking, but will see the occasional ball thrown his way. If the ‘Dores look to go to the skies over the middle though, expect to say RS Freshman Brad Allen lining up off tackle.

Defense

Senior OLB Moses Osemwegie is the heart, soul and mind of the Commodore defense. An All-SEC selection a year ago, Osemwegie calls the adjustments on the field, and plays pedal to the medal for 60 minutes. He returns after leading the Commodores in tackles the past two seasons. Kevin Joyce mans the weak side, and sophomore Jonathon Goff lines up in the middle of Vanderbilt’s base 4-3 defense. When the ‘Dores go to a 4-4, which will be often against the smash mouth running teams in the SEC, SR Otis Washington will serve as the second man in the middle.

DE Jovan Haye left a hole on one end of the line, but it was immediately filled when LB Herdley Harrison moved to end. He is a pure pass rusher, and could be spelled by either Chris Booker or Theo Horrocks. SO David Carter will line up on the opposite side. The middle is anchored 305 pound senior tackle Ralph “the Mouth” McKenzie. His size can sometimes swallow two offensive lineman and collapse the interior, forcing things to the sides where Osemwegie is patrolling. Ray Brown, Gabe Hall and Lamar Divens will rotate in at the other tackle spot frequently.

The secondary is the defense’s weak spot. Senior safety Kelechi Ohanaja leads this unit, but their biggest problem is speed. Most will have trouble keeping up with the stronger, faster receivers of Tennessee, Florida and Georgia. One bright spot is redshirt freshman Jared Fagan. While still extremely raw, he has shown blazing quickness, and should see action in every game. Senior Andrew Pace and junior Sean Dixon make up for their lack of speed with great instincts for the ball. Reshard Langford is expected to start the season at Free Safety.

Special Teams

The bane of the team for the past two seasons, kicking could again be a disaster. Hopefully, junior kicker Patrick Johnson has put his struggles of the past behind him and will provide a solid presence in field goal range. If he struggles, expect Cutcliffe to push redshirt freshman Daniel Lee into service.

Sophomore Kyle Keown will handle the punting duties, and looks to improve on his performance from 2004 with a 37.1 yard average.

Lee will handle kickoff duties, and Davis, Fagan, and Jackson-Garrison will return kicks and punts.

Preseason Honors

Three Commodores have been recognized in the preseason by the Associated Press

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/OsemwegieAA.jpg
ROLB #30 Moses Osemwegie
RS SR 6’0”, 230 lbs.
2nd Team All-American
1st Team All-SEC

One of the Southeastern Conference’s leading defensive performers and the league’s top active career tackler, Osemwegie has a knack for finding the football - and carries a punch with contact. A versatile player who has the ability to play any of the three linebacking positions, Osemwegie consistently brings his best play to the field. As a first-time captain, coaches will look for Osemwegie to play greater leadership role on defensive unit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/CutlerAA.jpg
QB #6 Jay Cutler
RS SR 6’4”, 230 lbs.
1st Team All-SEC

Cutler enters his final season with the Commodores as the Southeastern Conference’s most experienced quarterback and one of its most talented offensive players. With 34 career starts under his belt, Cutler possesses all the skills - strong arm, rushing threat, elusiveness in the pocket, toughness and leadership qualities - required to be one of the nation’s elite signal callers in 2005. Cutler enters season within reach of numerous Vanderbilt career passing and total offense records. During each of first three seasons, he has improved in the critical passing efficiency category. In 2004, he became just the third Commodore quarterback in 50 years to complete 60 percent of his attempts and threw just five interceptions. A three-time captain, Cutler must continue his excellent leadership in an offensive huddle missing five solid starters from a year ago. Possessing a superb dual threat, Cutler appears ideally suited to Vanderbilt’s multi-set offense.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/ErikDavisAA.jpg
WR #2 Erik Davis
SR 6’2”, 190 lbs.
2nd Team All-SEC

An All-Southeastern Conference caliber performer, Davis and quarterback Jay Cutler form one of the league’s top aerial combinations. One of the league’s most steady performers, Davis has improved his strength through an offseason conditioning effort. Davis enters final year needing 33 receptions and 355 receiving yards to reach Commodore all-time Top Ten in both categories.

Thanks, wuffie.

Well, if a recruit comes in wearing #1, and I can't edit the jersey number, I'll cut him, period. I don't care if he is a 5 star QB, if he can't respect my self-imposed rule for this dynasty, he won't be a Commodore.

you can edit recruits/players numbers in dynasty. Just go to the roster and player info...I hate it when ALL my recievers have #'s in the 80s...I have to have at least one in the single digits teens or twenties...

The dynasty looks good. One thing to think about after this season: Vanderbilt has announced that a player will be awarded the #1 who most represents Kwane's spirit. No #1 this year, but every year thereafter.

Thanks for that little bit of info. I'll definitely keep it in mind when next year begins. Thanks for the kind words as well. I actually got a game in yesterday, so updates are forthcoming.

In-Season Recruiting

David Cutcliffe and his staff have selected 12 high school seniors to recruit during the season. These players all are from pipeline states.

C Preston Wilson***** Mimosa Park, LA
6'2" 274 Position Rank: #1 C
Tendency: Balanced Top 3 Schools: FSU, LSU, UGA
40 Time: 5.07 Squat: 690
Bench: 480 Field Awr: A

With Trey Holloway graduating this year, Preston could become a force in the middle of the line for the next 4 years.

CB Kevin Davis**** Alexander City, AL
6'0" 175 Position Rank: #3 CB
Tendency: Coverage Top 3 Schools: AUB, TEN, FSU
40 Time: 4.31 Squat: 415
Vertical: 42.5 Field Awr: A
Bench: 240 Hands: A-

Kevin would provide good size and exceptional speed at the CB position. With his hands, he could possibly find some playing time at wide receiver as well.

SS Shawn Williams**** Harriman, TN
6'5" 210 Position Rank: #4 SS
Tendency: Balanced Top 3 Schools: TEN, UGA, ALA
40 Time: 4.39 Squat: 520
Vertical: 40.7 Field Awr: A-
Bench: 340 Hands: A-

Incredible size with speed to spare, Williams would be an excellent replacement for the departing Kelechi Ohanaja.

WR Marque Nelson**** Attalla, AL
6'3" 185 Position Rank: #11 WR
Tendency: Balanced Top 3 Scools: FSU, LSU, FLA
40 Time: 4.35 Squat: 350
Vertical: 41.6 Hands: A+
Bench: 265 Field Awr: B

Three of four Vanderbilt's top wide receivers graduate after the season. Nelson could be the answer in what will be a depleted receiving corps.

DE Daniel McGruder**** Bridge City, LA
6'2" 225 Position Rank: #9 DE
Tendency: Pass Rusher Top 3 Schools: TEN, LSU, aTm
40 Time: 4.60 Squat: 535
Vertical: 36.3 Bench: 340
Field Awr: A-

Slightly undersized for a defensive lineman, McGruder does possess good speed, and would work well in Vanderbilt's rotating end scheme.

OG Jeremy Evans**** Longwood, FL
6'46" 310 Position Rank: #20 OG
Tendency: Balanced Top 3 Schools: MIA, VANDY, TEX
40 Time: 5.33 Squat: 670
Vertical: 26.2 Bench: 490
Field Awr: A-

The heart and soul of the 'Dores offensive line will graduate this year in Nigel Seaman. Evans, with his great strength could come in and becoma an adequate replacement.

MLB Derrick Pears**** Oak Ridge, TN
6'1" 210 Position Rank: #20 MLB
Tendency: Balanced Top 3 Schools: TEX, VANDY, LSU
40 Time: 4.52 Squat: 640
Vertical: 37.5 Hands: C+
Field Awr: A Bench: 380

Pears could come in at any of the linebacking positions. With Osemwegie graduating, he might move to OLB if he comes to Nashville.

WR Daniel Dean**** Scottdale, GA
6'8" 190 Position Rank: #17 WR
Tendency: Balanced Top 3 Schools: TEN, FSU, UGA
40 Time: 4.31 Field AWr: C+
Vertical: 41.0 Hands: B+
Bench: 240 Squat: 350

Given his incredible height, he provides interesting matchups for any of the SEC schools.

C Nick Mason**** Tarpon Springs, FL
6'0" 300 Position Rank: #6 C
Tendency: Balanced Top 3 Schools: UGA, VANDY, FLA
40 Time: 5.16 Field Awr: C+
Vertical: 26.2 Bench: 465
Squat: 670

If Preston commits, Nick could be moved around the offensive line with his size. If he doesn't, he provides a presence at center wih very little dropoff.

HB Bryan Harris**** Wilmington Island, GA
5'9" 210 Position Rank: #18 HB
Tendency: Balanced Top 3 Schools: UGA, VT, TEN
40 Time: 4.41 Field Awr: A+
Vertical: 36.9 Hands: A-
Bench: 340 Squat: 555

A standout High School back, Harris could be the answer to a committee approach in Commodores' backfield.

CB Matthew Coleman*** Madison, AL
6'2" 190 Position Rank: #37 CB
Tendency: Balanced Top 3 Schools: ALA, AUB, TEN
40 Time: 4.48 Field Awr: A-
Vertical: 39.2 Hands: C+
Bench: 260 Squat: 415

Coleman could help with depth in the secondary.

MLB Jason Walker*** Smithville, TN
6'0" 229 Position Rank: #43 MLB
Tendency: Balanced Top 3 Schools: TEN, VANDY, ALA
40 Time: 4.60 Field Awr: B
Vertical: 36.9 Hands: B
Bench: 405 Squat: 640

Walker, from nearby Smithville, TN, is a little small, but shows exceptional strength and will help improve a weak, slow LB corps.

Following unranked Temple's upset of #19 Arizona State, there were two Owls that garnered national attention. Arizona State, marked by many pundits as one of USC's stumbling blocks on the way to their third consecutive National Title, looked sluggish and fell from the Top 25.

Keys to the Game

Offense

Cutcliffe must find ways to get Erik Davis the ball. Patrick Ghee and Josh Gattis form one of the nation’s top safety tandems for WF, but the cornerbacks lack experience. Cutler will need to keep on the move thanks to an aggressive Jim Grobe defense, with impact MLB Jonathan Abbate patrolling the middle. The running game will struggle against Wake’s speedy linebackers, so it will be imperative that Cutler perform well putting the ball in the air.

Defense

3 words – Stop Chris Barclay. If the ‘Dores can contain Barclay, they will force the game into the hands of sophomore QB Ben Mauk. No returning receiver for the Deacons had more than 26 receptions last year, and if Vanderbilt can make Mauk put the ball in the air, it could be a long day in Winston-Salem for the Deacons.

Special Teams

Ryan Plackemeier is an All-American punter. If Davis cannot get decent returns, it will leave Vandy with a long field to work with, and that leaves plenty of opportunities for the Wake defense to make big plays. Patrick Johnson must become more consistent in the kicking game for the ‘Dores. If the game is close late, Cutcliffe will have to decide whether or not put then game on the line with his leg.

Experts Pick

Cutler is All-SEC at QB, and Davis is a proven playmaker at WR. This offense should put up points if it can avoid costly turnovers. The Demon Deacons will run the ball on 1st down, run the ball on second down, and run the ball on third down. They may start slowly, but lack of depth on the Commodores defense will eventually lead to a big day by Barclay.

Thanks. What operating system are you using. Until I get my new PC rolling, I am using a $10.00 device called Snappy, but it won't work with any OS above Win2K. The company that makes them went out of business, but you can find them on Ebay. It just does screen caps, no video, but it's what I use,and it is fairly effective.

Gracias, mi amigo. I guess one good thing about working ungodly hours is that I have plenty of time in between games to throw info out there.

1st HALF

Wake would receive the kickoff and steadily move down the field. With passes of 24 yards to TE Zac Selmon and 20 yards to WR Chris Davis, and a big 20 yard run by Barclay, the Demon Deacons would find themselves eventually facing 2nd and 11 from the 23, we take you live to Commodore play-by-play man Sleepy Styles(ripped straight from the pages of Blue’s Michigan DP Dynasty):

Mauk lines up in the Shotgun, one to the right, two to the left. Barclay set up beside him. The ball is snapped, play-action to Barclay, he rolls to the right, and WHOA!!!, the big fella at end, David Carter just drilled Mauk in the backfield for a seven yard loss. The sophomore QB just rolled right into the arms of Carter, and he was leveled.

After incompletions on 3rd & 18 and 4th & 18, the Commodores would take over on the 35 yard line. Passes to TE Dustin Dunning (24 yds) and wideout Erik Davis (17 yds) would take care of most of the drive, and Cutler would add 17 with his legs, and we now take you back to our broadcast, 1st and Goal from the 5 after an offsides by the Deacons:

Vanderbilt lines up with a big set, Erik Davis on the outside, moving left to right on your radio dial. The snap, handoff to Jackson-Garrison, no Cutler kept it, rolling right, looking, looking, looking, floats it over the safety to Davis, and the ball is…caught by Erik Davis for a score, TOUCHDOWN COMMODORES!!! He just put the right amount of touch on that one to get it over Patrick Ghee’s outstretched arm and hit Erik Davis in the endzone to give the Commodores the lead.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/Week%202/DavisTD0591st.jpg
The beautiful touch pass to Davis by Cutler would put the Commodores up in the 1st.

Drive Summary
5 yard Pass from Jay Cutler to Erik Davis (XP Good) - 0:59 1st
Drive: 4-19 rushing, 3-46 passing, 8 plays, 70 yards, 03:13

Wake would receive the ball, and Barclay would gain 18 yards on 3 carries, before a loss of 3, followed by a Mauk incompletion would set up a 2nd and long for Mauk. On second, he would throw incomplete, and on 3rd &13, LB Kevin Joyce would collect the second sack (-7 yards) of the day for Vandy.

Both teams would struggle to find any offensive rhythm in the second quarter, and with 3:18 left in the half, Wake would attempt a fake punt, but turn the ball over on downs, setting up Vanderbilt at their own 46 yard line.

On first down, Cutler would pitch on a WR option to Jason Burns, who would scoot 21 yards to the 33. Whittington would run for 3, and an incomplete pass would set up 3rd and 7. Cutler would take an option keeper 6 yards to set up a 37 yard field goal try for Patrick Johnson. Back to our broadcast.

Lined up on the right hash mark, the snap, it’s down, he gets it off, and it’s long enough, hooking, just inside the right post and it’s good. Boy, they don’t come any closer than that. The field goal is good, and with 1:11 left in the half, the Commodores have taken a 10 to nothing lead over the Demon Deacons.

Drive Summary
Vandy 38 yard FG from Patrick Johnson - 1:11 2nd
Drive: 4-27 rushing, 1-0 passing, 5 plays, 27 yards, 02:07

With little time left in the half, the Demon Deacons would gain 7 yards on three plays before having to punt. Jennings would lose 1 yard on 1st down for the Commodores, and Cutler would call timeout with 1 second left on the clock. Setting up with five wideouts, Cutler would drop back deep, and find Erik Davis 35 yards down the field. He would be tackled where he caught the ball, and the half would end.

HALFTIME STATS

2nd HALF

To start the second Vanderbilt would move the ball out to the 38 before being forced to punt. On 1st down, Barclay would find a lane for 7 yards, setting up a 2nd & 3 at the 34 yard line. We now go back to Sleepy Styles and the Commodore Radio Network:

Mauk lined up under center, two tight ends to the right, a wide receiver to the left. Barclay deep in the offset I, Selmon in motion. The snap, fakes the handoff to Barclay, quick pass to the left, and the ball is…intercepted! Reshard Langford just jumped up and snagged that ball out of the air. This sets up the Commodores with great field position at the 30, and a chance to put this game away.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/Week%202/LangfordINT.jpg
Reshard Langford reads the play perfectly to give Vanderbilt their first takeaway of the season.

Still with the broadcast:

Now, it’s first and ten, ‘Dores set up in an offset I, Davis to the left, Marlon White to the right. Cutler, shouting out something to his receiver. The snap, the pitch goes to Jackson-Garrison. Running to the left, he stops, looks up field…fires the ball down the field and it is…CAUGHT!!! Caught by Eric Davis at the 2 yard line and tackled immediately. David Cutcliffe went with the old trickaroo, and it paid off greatly. The Commodores now have first and goal at the 2 yard line.

It would take 3 runs and an offsides by Wake for Cutler to punch the ball in, but that would give the Commodores a 17-0 lead with 3:51 left in the third. With that rushing TD, Jay Cutler breaks the two-way tie he held with Rodney Williams for #4 on Vanderbilt’s career rushing TD list with 17. He trails career leader Dean Davidson by 8.

Drive Summary
Vandy 1 yard Run from Jay Cutler (XP Good) - 3:51 3rd
Drive: 3-2 rushing, 1-28 passing, 5 plays, 30 yards, 01:23

Wake would again get the ball, and set up at the 18. Barclay would gain 0 and 1 yard respectively on the first two plays of the drive. Back to Sleepy:

Mauk sets up with Barclay the lone man in the backfield, two tight ends on 3rd and 8. The Demon Deacons really need to get a spark going with time winding down in the third. The snap, WOW! Did you see that block by Steve Vallos, wait a minute, ball is in the air, going deep, looking for John Tereshinski, and, intercepted!!! I believe it was SS Reshard Langford with his second interception in as many pass attempts by the sophomore QB, and with 2:00 minutes left in the third, things are looking grim for the hometown team tonight.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/Week%202/LangfordINT2.jpg
Langford pulls in his second interception from the clearly rattle Ben Mauk.

Vanderbilt would gain 25 yards on carries by Jackson and Cutler, helped by an offsides on Wake Forest, before nbeing forced to punt to start the fourth quarter. Mauk would hit TE John Tereshinski for 3 before being leveled by David Carter for his second sack of the game. For the 3rd and 12 play, we go back to Sleepy Styles with the call:

Mauk, now lined up in the shotgun, two receivers to the left, one to the right. Barclay lined up in the slot. Receives the snap, looking right, and fires the ball, off target and…intercepted!!! Sean Dixon turns the other way, dodges Barclay’s tackle, and it’s a foot race, and Sean Dixon will return the interception 44 yards for the score, and Vanderbilt is now up 23-0.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/Week%202/DixonINT.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/Week%202/DixonINTTD.jpg
Dixon steps in front of the errant pass, and showboats his way into the endzone after racing 44 yards to score.

Drive Summary
Vandy 44 yard INT Return from CB Sean Dixon (XP Good) - 6:46 4th
Drive: 0-0 rushing, 0-0 passing, 0 plays, 0 yards, 0:0

Wake would start off on their own 9 after a clipping call negated a 65 yard return by Willie Idlette. After a 3 & out, Vandy would get the ball back and send in their second string to complete the contest. Jackson-Garrison would gain 19 yards on the first down run, followed by a play in which QB Steven Bright would be forced to burn a timeout after confusion getting the play in. Jackson would then run for 2, and receive a pass for an 8 yard gain. Bright would gain 3 yards on a draw, followed by FB Z. Logan gaining 2. Bright would then grab 13 yards on an option keeper. Three straight incompletions by the backup QB would set u a 4th & 10 from the 11 yard line. Back to Sleepy in the booth:

Johnson lines up for his second field goal of the day, this time, a 28 yard attempt. The snap is low, but Keown gets it down. The kick is away, and dead down the center.

Drive Summary
Vandy 27 yard FG from Patrick Johnson - 2:15 4th
Drive: 5-39 rushing, 5-8 passing, 10 plays, 47 yards, 03:26

So with 2:15 left in the contest, the Commodores would lead Wake Forest 27-0 and be staring a shutout in the face. A decent return by Idlette would set up the Demon Deacons at the 27, and Barcay would finally find daylight, gaining 5 yards, 15 yards, and 22 yards to get the Deacons to the 31 with 1:25 left in the game.

Mauk sets up, 2 TE to the right, 1 receiver to the left. He receives the snap, and drops back, fires the ball, and it is complete. Complete to TE John Tereshinski for a 31 yard gain into the endzone. I can’t believe Tereshinski brought that one down. He was covered by three Commodore defenders, but somehow managed to bring it in. And the Commodores now lead 27 to 6.

Drive Summary
Wake 31 yard Pass from Ben Mauk to John Tereshinski (XP No Good) - 1:06 4th
Drive: 3-42 rushing, 1-41 passing, 4 plays, 83 yards, 01:06

A missed extra point would leave the margin at 21, and Wake would line up for the onsides kick. After the onside kick was recovered by Vanderbilt by RB Ron Bullock, Vanderbilt was content to run the clock out, and leave Winston-Salem with what has to be considered an improbable win.

I like this one so far. The Doster story as well was one I was unaware of. Ultimately, it's not what you do to tribute a player that matters, but the meaning behind it. It doesn't matter if you know him or not. If you want to keep #1 inactive forever for him, then by all means do so. And I applaud not the act of doing it, but the sentiment behind it.

I was pleased to see simulation equal reality, though it was equally pleasing to see the running game going.

Thanks, man. The skyhawks beatings were killing me, and the 'Dores still provide quite a nice challenge. Plus, I get the advantage of facing the Spiders and Levi Brown. Bitch out.

Thanks, rbar. Thes story touched me, and it just seems like I should do something, even though it is just a small gesture.

I appreciate the comments, gentlemen.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled program, already in progress.:)

Keys to the Game

Offense

Last week, David Cutcliffe showed an ability to play to the strengths of his team. Cutler was rarely asked to throw the ball deep (one pass over 30 yards), and flourished under the gameplan based on the short routes and by using his legs. Expect the speedier back Jeff Jennings to get more carries, and passes out of the backfield this week, as Jackson-Garrison led the Commodores’ rushing attack against the Demon Deacons with his bruising style. The Razorbacks are stout against the run, but do show weaknesses against the pass, giving up 250 yards in the air against the SW Missouri State Bears. Cutler should find opportunities against the questionable secondary in Fayetteville.

Defense

Vandy was able hold Barclay in check in their prior game, giving up 83 yards with no scores to the outstanding back. Their job will be increased exponentially this week, facing the speedy De’Arrius Howard and the bruising fullback Peyton Hillis. Hillis will be seeing his first action of the year, after serving a one game suspension to open the season. The ‘Dores will be able to keep 8 in the box most of the game, after Razorbacks’ top receiver Cedrick Washington suffered a partial tear of the ACL in the game against the Bears. Marcus Monk and Anthony Brown, both at 6’6”, provide favorable matchups for Arkansas in the passing game, but the Commodores showed an ability to get after the passer, and sophomore QB Robert Johnson could get shaky early, forcing a one dimensional attack that will help Vanderbilt.

Special Teams

Over the past three seasons, Arkansas has blocked at least four kicks. Patrick Johnson performed admirably against Wake Forest, but with the pressure the Razorbacks produce in the kicking game, he could struggle this week. Davis could have a big week returning punts, as the Razorback’s punters have a penchant for short line drives that do not leave time for the coverage times to get downfield. With Cedric Washington’s injury, there is a hole left in the Razorback return game, and it is unsure how Houston Nutt will combat this.

Experts Pick

Arkansas comes into the game after allowing a paltry 38 yards rushing last week. Cutler will be forced to the air early, and unless someone besides Davis steps up, he will struggle, as the senior WR will be double teamed most of the games. The Vanderbilt defense stopped Barclay last week, but the Hillis-Howard dual threat will leave Osemwegie stretched too thin, and the rest of the backers will not be able to swarm to one side, leaving him to cover any runs to his side. The crowd at Razorback Stadium will be rocking early after the big win last week, and to try and pump up their team before a September 17th trip to defending National Champion USC. All of this adds up to a long day for the traveling ‘Dores.

Arkansas (+13.5) over Vanderbilt

I have received news of the most fabulous order. The 70-80 hour work weeks are comng to an end. The night shifts...will end. I will be moving to a standard 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM shift, Monday through Friday. Forty hours per week, home at night with my kids, and time for football games as well.

I was off last night, and actually got three whole games played, so updates are forthcoming.

1st HALF

Joining Sleepy Styles and the Commodore Radio Network:

Vanderbilt has won the toss and elected to receive. Expect to see lots of passes towards the 6’2” wideout Erik Davis, as it appears he will be covered all night by the 5’9” Darrius Vinnett. If Cutler can put the ball over his head, the ‘Dores could start off explosively against an Arkansas team that has them outmatched.”

Cassen Jackson-Garrison (forevermore from this point known as CJG) would start things off for the ‘Dores, with a 1 yard run. Vanderbilt would dink and dunk and their way to the 46, before a false start and an incompletion would leave them with a 3rd and 11 from the 49. For the play call, we go to Sleepy:

The Commodores lined up in an offset I, White to the right, Davis to the left. The snap is in Cutler’s hands, play-action to Jackson-Garrison. Rolling to his left. Lofts the ball deep down the field, overthrown, no, Davis caught it. Davis made a tremendous catch getting way up in the air, and the Commodores have struck quickly to take a six nothing lead.

Davis uses his height advantage to give Vandy the early lead.
Drive Summary
Vandy 51 yard Pass from Jay Cutler to Erik Davis (XP Good) - 4:18 1st
Drive: 4-19 rushing, 4-63 passing, 9 plays, 77 yards, 3:39

Arkansas would take the kickoff, and after a personal foul on the ‘Dores, start at the ↓35. Hillis would pound out four yards on first and ten, and after a false start, would face second and eleven. Back to our broadcast:

Johnson under center in a pro set, two wide receivers. Takes the snap, and it’s a draw. Hit in the backfield by Otis Washington, and the ball is loose, THE BALL IS LOOSE!!! Scramble for the ball, and…Osemwegie has it. The Commodores have recovered the ball at the Razorbacks 31, and Cutler will come back in to try to give Vandy a big lead early.

The Razorback defense would stiffen, and hold the ‘Dores to a 35 yard field goal, and with 1:55 left in the first quarter, ten points would separate the teams.

Drive Summary
Vandy 36 yard FG from Patrick Johnson - 1:55 1st
Drive: 2-9 rushing, 3-9 passing, 6 plays, 13 yards, 1:42

The Razorbacks would settle in and pick up a couple of first downs on the next drive before having to punt, and Vanderbilt would start at their own 20. The fullback, Zac Logan, would pick up seven on 1st down, and we take you now back to Sleepy Styles with the call:

Cutler in the I, three wide receivers, two to the right, one to the left. Running the option, fakes a pitch to Jennings, and turns the corner, to the 37 and is clobbered. Vickiel Vaughn just laid Cutler out and the ball is loose. Vaughn picks it up and sees wide open spaces in front of him. Vaughn will roll untouched into the endzone, and Arkansas has closed the gap.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/Week%203/VaughnFFTD-ARK.jpg
Vaughn separates Cutler from the ball, picks it up and scampers unhindered 37 yard to the endzone.
Drive Summary
ARK 37 yard Fumble Return from SS Vickiel Vaughn (XP Good) - 7:21 2nd
Drive: 0-0 rushing, 0-0 passing, 0 plays, 0 yards, 0:0

The second quarter would proceed to be a battle of two stout defenses, with more plays missing then hitting. A fumble by TE Dustin Dunning at the Arkansas 21 would leave the Hogs with 79 yards to cover in 2:43. Howard and Hillis would combine on the drive to rush for 40 yards, and a 15 yard personal foul (face mask) would set up Chris Balseiro for a 39 yard field goal attempt, which would be nailed true to knot the score up with 53 seconds left in the half.

ARK 40 yard FG from Chris Balseiro - 0:53 2nd
Drive: 7-40 rushing, 1-0 passing, 9 plays, 55 yards, 1:49

Cutcliffe’s offense would come out guns ablazin’, trying to gain a quick score before the half, but after being unsuccessful in gaining a first down, Arkansas would call a timeout to force a Vanderbilt punt. On the Razorbacks’ lone play after receiving the ball back, LE Chris Booker would sack QB Robert Johnson for a 6 yard loss to end the half.

SECOND HALF

Now to Sleepy Styles in the booth:

We caught up with Coach Cutcliffe at half time, and he stated that turnovers were killing the Commodores. All ten of Arkansas’ points in the first half were set up by fumbles, and he said if they could settle down and hold onto the ball in the second half, they have a chance to hang with the Razorbacks.

Arkansas would begin the second half with the ball, and just start to run the ball down Vandy’s throats, with gains of 1, 15, 20 and 9 before QB Robert Johnson’s second fumble of the day (SS Ohanaja FF, DT R. McKenzie FR) would give the ball back to the ‘Dores at their own 30. On 1st and 10 from the 30, scatback Jeff Jennings would shimmy 14 yards and on the next play, FB David Whittington would pick up two more on a short screen pass. For the second and eight play from the 46, we join Sleepy:

Cutler in the shotgun, three receivers to the right, Davis, the lone receiver to the left, Jennings in the backfield. The snap is high, but Cutler brings it under control and fires quickly. Davis grabs it at the 47 for a first down, hit at the 47, and BREAKS THE TACKLE. At the 40, the 30, the 20, and highsteps his way into the endzone for his second TD grab of the night, this one a 54 yarder in which he just shrugged off the Vinnett tackle, and Vanderbilt has reclaimed the lead with 1:09 left in the third quarter. The effort by Davis moves Jay Cutler into a three-way tie with Greg Zolman and Whit Taylor with 41 career TD passes as a Commodore.

Davis breaks away from the Arkansas defender before celebrating on his way to the endzone to give Jay Cutler a share of the career passing TD record for Vanderbilt.
Drive Summary
Vandy 54 yard Pass from Jay Cutler to Erik Davis (XP Good) - 5:33 3rd
Drive: 1-14 rushing, 2-56 passing, 3 plays, 70 yards, 1:09

Arkansas would set up at the 29, and Houston Nutt would finally put the ball in the hands of his able running backs, with Howard gaining 40 yards, including a 13 yarder that would tie the score again.

Drive Summary
Ark 13 yard Run from De'Arrius Howard (XP Good) - 3:48 3rd
Drive: 5-53 rushing, 1-18 passing, 6 plays, 71 yards, 1:41

The teams would exchange punts before Cutler would begin to lead the ‘Dores steadily down the field, relying mainly on his stable of running backs to get the Dores into scoring range. For the 3rd and 8 play from the 24, we go back to the Commodore Radio Network, and Sleepy Styles:

Cutler sets up in the I formation, Jennings the deep back. He has the snap and drops back, throws to the right, and the ball is picked off, and Chris Houston will not be touched. Cutler tried to get the ball to Jennings in the flat, but the sophomore defensive back for the Razorbacks was sitting all over the route, and will go 79 yards for a score, and the Razorbacks have their first lead of the day with 5:31 to go in the fourth quarter. Cutler has got to be sick. After managing the ball well all day, he has put his team in a hole with time winding down.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/Week%203/HOustonINTTD.jpg
Houston grabs the ball at the 21, and there was no one in his area code as he raced 79 yards, and the Commodores would trail for the first time this season.
Drive Summary
Ark 79 yard INT Return from CB Chris Houston (XP Good) - 5:31 4th
Drive: 0-0 rushing, 0-0 passing, 0 plays, 0 yards, 0:00

On the next drive, Cutler would come out on first down and hit Marlon White for seven. An aside – shockingly enough, this would be Cutler’s first pass completed to a wide receiver not named Erik Davis this season. He had hit TE’s, RB’s and Davis. Second down would see FB Zac Logan rumble ahead for 5 yards and a Vanderbilt first down. Vanderbilt would be forced to burn a timeout after they had trouble hearing the play that was called in. And now, we go back, again, to Sleepy:

Cutler, in an I formation, two tight ends to the right, Erik Davis to the left. Jackson-Garrison and Whittington in the backfield. The hand off to Garr, no, he keeps it, rolling to the left, running out of room, he lofts the ball, over Vinnet’s head, and Davis has it. No one will catch him, and he will race 70 yards to paydirt, tying the game and giving Jay Cutler sole possession on the passing TD record for the Commodores. Jay Cutler has now connected with his receiver 42 times for the score throughout his career. What a day for Erik Davis. This is his third receiving TD of the day, and he now has 203 receiving yards on the day. With 4:24 left in the contest, it is a brand new ballgame.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v96/rsump112/Vanderbilt/2005/Week%203/DavisTD3.jpg
Vinnett just can’t get his hand in the air enough to keep Davis from making the catch.
Drive Summary
Vandy 70 yard Pass from Jay Cutler to Erik Davis (XP Good) - 4:24 4th
Drive: 1-5 rushing, 2-77 passing, 3 plays, 82 yards, 1:04

Arkansas would come out and Houston Nutt would have one thing in mind. De’Arrius Howard. With gains of 1, 20 and start the drive, Howard would look good before confusion on second and nine would see sophomore QB Robert Johnson turn the wrong way to find Howard racing to the other side of the field. Turning upfield, he would see Osemwegie there to greet him a yard behind the line of scrimmage, leaving the Razorbacks with 3rd and 10 with time winding down quickly. Kevin Joyce would break through for a big sack, and Houston Nutt would put the game in his defense’s hands with 2:15 left in the game.

Davis would finally get a decent punt return, going 22 yards and setting up the Commodores with great field position at the ↓45. Cutler would run for 1 yard on first, but be forced to throw the ball away on second and nine. On third and nine, he would find Marlon White for his second reception of the day, this time for 24 yards to the 30. With the noise level almost unbearable, Vandy would actually be forced to burn both of their remaining timeouts before running the next play. I know, I know, I’m a dumbass. I’ll swear, HFA drives me crazy at times. Cutler would attempt to run the ball, but be hit for a 1 yard loss and the clock would continue to tick. Jennings would get a handoff, and get to the 28, and an incidental facemask would tack on five yards to the 23 with the clock rolling towards 40 seconds. An incompletion on third down would leave 33 seconds, and a 41 yard field goal looming in the distance. These were the situations Johnson had struggled with last year.

The junior kicker would trot onto the field, and Johnson’s vision was shaky. We now go back to Sleepy Styles, for the field goal attempt:

Johnson lined up to kick, ball just inside the 24 yard line, on the right hashmark. The snap is away, Keown gets it d
