A Paladin's Quest

Official NCAA Press Conference, March 3rd, 2005
The room is packed with reporters awaiting a major announcement regarding NCAA Division 1 football. As the representative takes his place behind the podium at the front of the room the buzzing conversations slowly cease, leaving silent anticipation.
NCAA Representative: We are here today to announce the newest Division 1-A program, a program that will be replacing the Temple Owls as an independent school.
The speaker pulls a sheet off a poster stand to reveal this symbol...
http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/2/furman20diamond20f2026720copy0.jpg
Representative: The Furman Paladins!
Polite Applause.
Representative: I'll open the floor for your questions.
Reporter: Johnny Bennet, America Today. How was this selection made?
Representative: With Temple abandoning their football program we had the opportunity to select from the very best of the Division 1-AA schools. Based on both on field performance and academic excellence we were able to limit our choice to 15 schools. A lottery was held and Furman was selected. We feel confident they will become a credit to 1-A college football.
The questions continue for 10 minutes and then the conference ends. Furman's long journey to the top has begun.
WPDN Official Preview Show, August 18th, 2005
Barry Sims: Hello again football fans it's that time of year again. I am your comforting baritone voice of Furman football and with me once again is my friend and yours, Dangerous Dave Wilson!
Dave Wilson: It's good to be back with y'all. Of course, a lot has changed since the last time we were here. Let me just say it: Division 1-A.
Barry: You said a mouthful, partner. But what does it mean?
Dave: Well, Temple ran out like a scalded hound, so our boys are taking their place as an Independent, joining an Army team that has been demoted from C-USA and, of course, Navy and Notre Dame.
Barry: That's quite a step up in competition. I'm looking at the schedule and I see three top 25 teams.
Dave: The good news is two 1-AA opponents. Those could be the only wins this year though. Polls have us at 119 out of the 119 schools.
Barry: I do agree with that, but I should point out the offensive weapons Furman will bring to the table, especially at Quarterback and Halfback. The defense, on the other hand...
Dave: My Momma always told me, "If you haven't got anything nice to say..."
Barry: I still feel that 4 or 5 wins is attainable, with a lot of luck, of course.
Dave: I've got my fingers crossed, no doubt about it.
Barry: We're going to callers. Caller are you there?
Caller: Last year we were fielding mostly 4-3 defenses. I think with tougher opposition we might consider other defensive schemes, especially pulling more linebackers for coverage.
Barry: You just had to get me started on Nickel and Dime defenses. I feel there are both risks and benefits associated with them. While packing the box is always good the more dynamic west coast passing game tend to make for a wide open field. On the other hand option play at the college level...
Dave: Well, we could be here for awhile.

Official Furman Pregame Show
Barry: Hello football fans! We are just a short time away from Furman's Division 1-A Debut against 18th ranked Arizona State. We're coming to you live from Tempe, Arizona and it's going to be a real hot one.
Dave: You're not kidding, partner. I'm sweating Crisco, here.
Barry: If you think we have it bad, imagine being on the field. Especially in the case of our Paladins, who are heavy, heavy underdogs.
Dave: I think we're going to surprise some folks. You heard it here first.
Barry: Duly noted. Today's game is a regional broadcast and as a result we have a very special guest joining us. You know him as Scooter, Lee Corso!
Lee Corso: You got that right, sweetheart! I'm pumped up for today's game!
Barry: It's a real honor to have you here on the Furman pre-game show.
Lee: Don't do that, my butt is for sitting, not for kissing.
Barry: (laughs) Got it coach. So what are your early thoughts on this game?
Lee: It looks pretty one-sided. Furman is badly out matched on both sides of the ball. I especially worry about their weak secondary defending one of the best Wide Outs in college football. This one could get pretty ugly.
Dave: I guess we can assume your pick is Arizona State.
When the camera pans back to Lee Corso he is wearing an Arizona State helmet.
Lee: That's right, sweetheart. I'm picking State to win BIG.
Dave: I knew we should have brought in Herbstreit instead.
Barry: There you have it. Coming up next, Furman vs. Arizona State!
Game Summary
The Paladins got a rude welcome to Division 1-A play, with Arizona State scoring quickly and following that up with an interception. By the end of the first quarter Furman trailed 20-0. The sole highlight for the Paladins was a missed extra point.
There was a flicker of hope in the second quarter as a drive that featured 6 consecutive complete passes led to Furman's first points, cutting the lead to 20-7. This was as close as it got, though, as the Arizona State offense continued to shred an overmatched Furman defense that looked completely lost and confused. At the half the score was 34-7.
The third quarter saw Furman hit rock bottom, making ugly mistakes on both sides of the ball. The result was 30 unanswered points, running the score to 64-7 at the start of the final quarter of play.
To Furman's credit they kept fighting, and with the second team in for Arizona State they managed a good quarter of football. An interception, the lone defensive highlight of the day, led to a Furman touchdown and a second touchdown in the closing seconds was negated by holding (Arrrggghhhh! Give me a break, game!).
Final Score
#18 Arizona State 71
Furman 14
Not a great debut, but as good as could be expected. Turnovers and weak pass coverage were the main reasons for the defeat. The offense did have its moments, but the atrocious defense will probably lead to more huge scores from our opponents in coming weeks.

Week Three at Youngstown State, September 10, 2005
After earning an SI cover in week one (Mauling the Hapless) and enduring a grueling bye week the Paladins prepare to travel north to take on the Penguins.
Elsewhere, SS #20 is failing his classes (already!?!). The last thing I need is the NCAA breathing down my neck in my first year, so he gets a five game suspension to study.

Barry: Welcome back. I am Barry Sims and joining me as always is Dangerous Dave Wilson. Today we are coming to you live from Youngstown, Ohio.
Dave: That's right and it looks like it will be a beautiful day for football.
Barry: After some soul searching in the bye week Furman is hoping to get their first win.
Dave: Now is the best chance for them to do it. The Penguins are a weak Division 1-AA program.
Barry: Heavy scoring seems likely as both teams field weak defenses. The winner will probably be the team that can best avoid turning the ball over.
Dave: No maybe about. If the Paladins can avoid mistakes they might go back to Greenville with a win.
Game Summary
On Furman's first play of the game HB #22 broke a 76 yard run for a touchdown, setting the tone for the game. Youngstown came back and scored nearly as quickly and the track meet was officially on. At the end of the first quarter the Paladins led 14-7
The second quarter featured three excellent drives for both teams as neither defense could find an answer. The difference was that the Penguins had to settle for a field goal after stalling inside the 10 yard line. At the half the score was 35-24.
The pace slowed significantly in the third quarter as Furman elected to play ball control offense and wear down the Penguins. However, their drive eventually stalled and Youngstown state came back with alarming speed to score a touchdown, making the score 35-31 at the end of the third.
The more methodical offense paid dividends in the fourth quarter as a touchdown drive put the game out of reach. The Penguins managed another field goal, but Furman was able to run out the clock with one final drive to win in decisive fashion.
Final Score
Youngstown State 34
Furman 42
A win is a win. The fact that a team as weak as the Penguins pushed us to the edge is disappointing, but on the other hand Furman is a weak team, too. The real test will be next week at Army, when we have the chance to upset a weak 1-A team. Right now, it looks like a long shot.

After three weeks, it looks like we have a chance with a few players from South Carolina. We are splitting our points between four players. Signing even one of them would be a major victory.

*** Colby Hall, LT. Furman is #2, behind Georgia. Spending 28%.
*** Doug Johnson, LT. Furman is #2, behind Georgia. Spending 26%.
*** CB Furman is #8 and probably about to get dropped with Florida State as his first choice. I've cut his % down to 14.

Barry: Hello again Paladin fans! We are coming to you live from the friendly confines of Paladin Stadium here in Greenville.
Dave: It's a beautiful day, just perfect for the home opener. Of course, the Army Black Knights are hoping to bring some gloom with them today.
Barry: Army comes in with a 0-1 record, following a tough 28-35 loss to #19 Boston College. Despite this showing, they are rated 95th in the nation.
Dave: I really don't get the lack of respect after their week 3 performance. Speaking of week 3, Furman is coming off a big win in Youngstown.
Barry: This is still going to be a noticable step up. What are the keys to victory in this game?
Dave: Contain the run, avoid turnovers and don't get too aggressive. It sounds as simple as can be, but this Army team is much tougher than anyone realizes.
Barry: It should be exciting, if nothing else. Furman vs. Army, coming up next!
Game Summary
Furman won the toss and immediately looked overwhelmed, losing 4 yards in a three and out opening drive. Army responed with a touchdown drive but the Paladins managed an answer. Their defense continued to struggle against Army's star halfback, and at the end of the first Army led 14-7.
Furman finally got it together in the second, playing an excellent quarter of football. The defense finally forced Army to go three and out and a fumble recovery on a Furman punt led to an easy touchdown. With 36 seconds left to play in the half Army led 21-14, with the Black Knights on their own 30. The defense promptly collapsed, of course, and a long run tied it up at 21 all at the half.
Whatever adjustments were made at halftime, they were not the right ones, as the Paladin's third quarter woes continued. The offense could not move the ball at all in the passing game and the defense was as bad as ever. Army led 31-21 at the end of the third.
It just got uglier after that. Any chance for a comeback was erased by turnovers and a general inability to move the ball. Army's halfback putting up career numbers certainly didn't help. Furman was shut out 24-0 in the second half, resulting in a disappointing loss in the home opener.

Barry: Hello again Paladin fans! We are coming to you live from Paladin Stadium where we will be hosting Western Michigan. Western Michigan comes in with a 1-2 record and quite a few bits of bad luck.
Dave: Right now Western Michigan is as hurt as a run over dog. They have their best wide out hurt, an injured defensive end and a star half back on suspension for assaulting the manager of a Kalamazoo area People's Bank.
Barry: That bank incident is truly atrocious. What a black eye for this great sport.
Dave: Well, I sort of understand it. I once got into a scuffle with a cousin at the feed store and spent the night in the hokey.
Barry: And look at you now.
Dave: Exactly!
Barry: In any case the Broncos come in extremely vulnerable. Can Furman take advantage of others misfortunes.
Dave: I have to say they will, partner. In fact I'm going to guarantee a Furman win. I sense that this is there week.
Barry: Well, there you have. For my part, I'm getting a feeling we are about to head to the field for today's game.
Game Summary
Western Michigan's offensive woes are quickly apparent, as their quarterback surrenders an interception on their first drive of the game. Furman drives down to the Bronco 12 before deciding to share the misery by giving the interception back. It is returned for a touchdown. After both offenses accomplish nothing, the quarter ends with Furman down 7-0.
The second quarter is literally all Furman. Two huge drives result in touchdowns and our usually awful defense has the depleted Bronco offense completely in check. At the half the Paladin's lead 14-7 and I'm already preparing to celebrate the upset.
Then, the third quarter. Any guesses on what happens?
Furman keeps right on dominating...just kidding, making sure you were paying attention. The usual collapse comes in a big way. Western Michigan finds the Achilles heel of my defense: just call a deep route and throw it up for grabs. My secondary is so slow and inept that there is little to do but try to increase pressure on the QB, but suddenly I'm not getting in on him. Two touchdowns later Western Michigan leads 21-14 going into the fourth.
No big deal, I can still rally.
Of course, the game engine decides it is now time to stop giving me false hope by screwing me over as painfully as possible. The boys from Kalamazoo return a punt for a touchdown, and then after a Furman TD they return a kickoff all the way! I get it, I'm not going to win.
As I final insult, my QB is injured and out for 7 weeks! His replacement, the appropriately numbered QB #13 has an overall rating of 44. Just when you think you hit the bottom, someone gives you a shovel.
Western Michigan dominates the fourth 21-7 to come from behind, break my heart, ruin the warm glow I had going, etc, etc.

Official Furman Pregame Show
Barry: We are coming to you live from the campus of Bowling Green University, where our Paladins are hoping to make a good showing...or at least show up.
Dave: Well, I can tell you who won't be showing up: our starting quarterback. The X-rays revealed extensive damage to his shoulder and he will be out for at least a month, probably more.
Barry: What can you tell us about his replacement?
Dave: Not much. Basically our offensive captain is out and an unknown walk on will be leading the Furman offense today. It's as bad as it sounds.
Barry: Bowling Green comes in with a 1-2 record, but an explosive passing game.
Dave: With our secondary exposed last week I'm not too optimistic. I have a feeling we're going to get lit up.
Barry: Well, it's bad news and nothing but. Let's hit the field for today's game.
Game Summary
The total lack of defense, especially in the secondary was an immediate problem. Even playing the nickel sets that had been effective against Western Michigan couldn't stop us from getting shredded early. The offense, hamstrung by the loss of its best player, had to rely on a predictable running attack, with the monotony broken up by the occasional rocket ball interception. Furman trailed 14-0 at the end of one.
There was a chance to get on the board in the second after an interception, but the offense continued to struggle. A 47 yard wind assisted field goal attempt hit the right goal post, ending any hope for a positive moment to talk about at the half. Meanwhile the Falcon's passing game continued to roll for ten more points, putting the home team up 24-0 at the half.
Then, the third quarter. 35 unanswered points. I'm not saying anything else.
In the fourth the second team for Bowling Green came in and Furman suddenly looked like a million dollars on both sides of the ball. Given somewhat even odds we will perform well, but we're so bad that even most second teams are better than us. In any case, a 67 yard TD run and a fumble recovery which lead to a field goal allowed the Paladins to dominate the final quarter and merely take a massive beating instead of an unbelievably massive one.

Barry: Hello again Furman fans! We are coming to you live from Paladin Stadium. Our Paladins come in with a 1-4 record, a plague of injuries and a tough Maryland team ready to take advantage.
Dave: Maryland is about as tough as a piece of old shoe leather. Their record is only 2-3, but I don't feel it reflects how good they really are.
Barry: I have to agree. The Terps are going to be especially tough on defense. With the Furman offense struggling, points could be a rare commodity for them today.
Dave: Furman will need to focus on the running game, control the clock and prevent the big plays that have hurt us so much in past games.
Barry: Can Furman win?
Dave: Anything can happen, that's why they play the games. With that said, I don't think they have much of a chance today.
Barry: Let's go to the field for today's game.
Game Summary
The first quarter featured two very lethargic offenses and solid defense. Surprisingly, Furman was able to limit Maryland to a single field goal. Unfortunately their own offense had trouble reaching midfield and the punter was seeing a lot of playing time.
The offense finally got going in the second, including an impressive 80 yard touchdown drive powered by Furman's star HB. Turnovers by both teams led to an exchange of field goals and Furman took a 10-6 lead into the half. The mood in Paladin Stadium was absolutely electric: would this be the first big upset?
Third Quarter. Maryland 24, Furman 0.
Following the now expected second half swoon, the beating was on. The fourth quarter offered no relief as the Paladins continued to be dominated on both sides of the ball. Apart from a late field goal, the second half was all Terps. Another brutal blow out was made even more bitter by thoughts of what could have been. When will Furman play an entire game, not just half of one?

Barry: Hello again Paladin fans. Today Furman will be playing host to one of the nation's top programs as the #8 Miami Hurricanes are in Greenville to take on a Furman team that has been struggling as of late.
Dave: Struggling might be an understatement. The latest bad news is a recently announced four game suspension of our starting tight end for team rules violations. It appears he was skipping team meetings.
Barry: Meetings? Those don't accomplish anything.
Dave: Maybe so, but I talked to Coach Lamb and he doesn't want anything like this happening. We may be 1-5 but we've still got a reputation for excellence to protect.
Barry: Speaking of excellence, Miami comes in with a 4-1 record and perhaps the best defense in college football.
Dave: This team is so athletic it's almost scary. It could be a long afternoon.
Barry: There is some good news, however. With today's game being broadcast regionally we are once again joined by Sunshine Scooter, Lee Corso!
Lee: That's right sweetheart, I'm excited about today's game.
Barry: What are your thoughts on Furman's inaugural Division 1-A season?
Lee: I've got a lot of respect for this Paladin team. They've played hard in every game so far and have given quite a few teams scares.
Dave: With that said, who wins today?
Lee: Miami is light years ahead of Furman in every possible way. It's going to be a one-sided Hurricanes win, no doubt about it.
Dave: I can't believe my ears, coach. On our show you say that.
Lee: Hey, at least I didn't put on the mascot head like I will later.
Dave: True, true.
Barry: Well, there you go. Right now it's time to hit the field for today's game.
Game Summary
Furman's defense immediately shocked Miami by forcing an embarrassing three and out for the national powerhouse. The offense had significantly less success, being held without a first down for the entire first quarter. Miami finally cracked Furman's nickel set for a touchdown and led 7-0 after one.
In the second the Hurricane offense began living up to it's billing, shredding the Paladin secondary for three touchdowns. There was no answer on offense until the final minute of the half when the Paladins marched from their 20 to the Hurricane 5. Poor clock management forced them to settle for the kick, however. Miami led 28-3 at the half.
For once the third wasn't a nightmare compared to the other quarters, but that was only because the first and second had been so lackluster. Furman did manage another decent drive, but failed to convert on fourth and short. Meanwhile, the defense had been worn down, surrendering 17 points to put the 'Canes ahead 45-3 going into the final quarter.
The fourth featured a time consuming Furman drive that ultimately resulted in no points but did burn most of the time off the clock. Miami was content to play a conservative game with the little time remaining and the end result was a scoreless quarter and the expected big loss. The only good news was it probably could have been much worse and there were some bright spots on defense.

Thanks for checking this out! The third quarter watch is a sort of running joke (it was either laugh or cry) based on Furman's repeated third quarter lapses. After the Miami game the Paladins have been outscored in the 3rd 137-0. [oops]

Barry: We are coming to you live from Houston, where your Furman Paladins will be taking on the Houston Cougars. Furman comes into this game with a 1-6 record, a five game losing streak and quite frankly little hope.
Dave: We're really going to learn about the character of this team now. It would be easy to give up at this point, no doubt about it.
Barry: Some good news to pass along: I had a chance to meet with the starting quarterback for Furman and he told me his rehabilitation is going well. It looks like he'll be back in time for our rivalry game with The Citadel.
Dave: Well, that's certainly good to hear.
Barry: As for today, Houston comes in with a 4-3 record and an explosive running game. Could we see a battle of the running backs today?
Dave: Maybe, but if Houston is smart they'll exploit our weak secondary with the long ball.
Barry: What can Furman do to contain the Cougar offensive?
Dave: We've had some success with blitzing the quarterback from a nickel scheme in the last few weeks. I suspect we'll see that again today.
Barry: We'll know for sure in a few moments. Let's head to the field.
Game Summary
The first quarter featured plenty of offense from both teams. Houston marched down the field on their opening possession for the score, but the Paladins responded with a long touchdown drive to tie it up. The Cougars answered by scoring with a single long pass seconds later.
Is there anything worse than sweating out a long drive and then having your opponent score in a heartbeat right afterward? The answer is "yes, a lot of things are worse than that, of course" but you see my point.
Although I'm now demoralized, the second quarter is fairly close, with Houston only scoring once while the Paladin offense goes on its usual mid-game coffee break. Then, the final 50 seconds. The Houston QB throws up a prayer on 3rd down, the ball is batted around by two Furman players while I yell "come on guys, intercept!" and is then caught and taken for a touchdown by Houston. Furman gets the ball back. NOW there's an interception. The Houston HB then runs through my defense like they're stuck in two feet of mud. At the end of the half, Houston leads 35-7.
The third is a bit of an anti-climax after that crushing body blow. Furman finally scores in this hated quarter with a nice sustained drive. Of course Houston gets back in the end zone three plays later, killing any good feelings I might have had about my first credible third quarter performance this season. 42-14, Cougars.
The fourth is a whole lot of nothing. Houston adds a meaningless field goal half way through, and the rest is just a comedy of errors for both teams as the Cougars pick up an easy victory.

Official Furman Pregame Show
Barry: Welcome once again to Paladin Stadium. Today Furman will play host to Miami of Ohio. Both teams are coming in today down a starting quarterback.
Dave: That might be the only thing these teams have in common. The Redhawks come in 5-2 while Furman has lost six in a row, for a record of 1-7.
Barry: So injuries won't be a factor?
Dave: They will, but not enough to change the outcome. I think our defense has the opportunity to have a big day against an untested quarterback, but our own offense is quite frankly a mess.
Barry: What does Furman need to do to win?
Dave: A few miracles certainly wouldn't hurt. The defense has to defend the long pass and the offense has to generate at least three or four sustained drives.
Barry: With Miami University playing for a Bowl Berth that's a lot to ask.
Dave: This team has surprised people in the past, so we'll have to wait and see.
Barry: It looks like that wait is just about over, as we are going to the field right now.
Game Summary
Miami wasted no time taking the lead with a (what else?) long pass play for a touchdown on their opening drive. After that, the Paladin defense began to step up a bit, getting decent pressure on the Redhawk QB. On the offensive side, there was little good news in the 1st. An O-line injury resulted in extremely poor protection for our weak QB, and Furman could not get the ball past the 50. Miami led 7-0 after one quarter.
The second was more of the same, although the Furman offense did manage to get the ball past the 50 once before the drive died on a fourth down debacle around the Miami 30. Meanwhile, we are getting killed in the battle for field position, starting drives within our own 10 on two occasions. This nearly led to a safety and did lead to a short touchdown drive to put the Redhawks up 14-0 at the half.
The Third Quarter saw the Paladins return to their usual form. A nice drive ended in a fumble as the AI decided it would not let me do well in the 3rd, no matter what. Defense lapses resulted in two scores and the game was pretty much over as the visitors led 28-0 going into the final quarter.
Now I had only one mission: not to be shut out. Wild risks on offense resulted in an interception for a Miami touchdown, but also allowed for our only red zone trip in the entire game in the final minute of play. An extremely rare passing touchdown allowed me to save just a little face, but the game was still a disaster for Furman.

Barry: Well, the good news is the season is almost over. The bad news is today our hard luck Furman Paladins are in Virginia to play a team that narrowly missed the top 25 last week.
Dave: Virginia has a 4-3 record coming into today, but is far better than that would lead you to believe. They have an excellent defense and a strong running attack.
Barry: It's the pass that concerns me, especially with our weak and depleted defense. In the latest entry to the "what next" file one of our linebackers has been suspended for the season after getting into a brawl in an area night club.
Dave: If the fighting wasn't bad enough, word is he lost the fight and had to be saved by security.
Barry: Too bad there won't be any bouncers to pull Virginia off our Paladins today.
Dave: Yeah, I hate to say it but I don't think we have a chance.
Barry: Coach Lamb told me that the focus today is on any positives we can find, so hopefully we will turn up a few as we go to the start of today's game.
Game Summary
Virginia returned the opening kick off for a touchdown, resulting in about five minutes of me holding my head in both hands and moaning pitifully. It actually seemed to help, as Furman put together one of their best drives of the season, moving 80 yards with a good mix of passing and rushing to tie the score at 7. Sadly Virginia nearly broke another kickoff and it didn't take them long to find the end zone and a 14-7 lead after one.
Another nice drive by the Paladins ends with a short field goal and I'm actually feeling pretty good. Even another fast score by Virginia is not too big a deal, seeing as my offense is clicking for once. Then everything falls apart. 2 Interceptions on ill-advised throws lead to two more Virginia scores and a 35-10 halftime lead.
The third quarter features another good Furman drive, but it all ends in disaster. At the Virginia 7 I try a short pass which is intercepted and returned 97 yards (!) for the only score of the third.
The fourth is a blur of mistakes, unashamed weeping and giving the screen the middle finger (both hands). Virginia adds two more touchdowns to complete the beating.

Barry: We are coming to you from Paladin Stadium for today's game against The Citadel. What was once a relatively friendly rivalry has turned absolutely ugly this year after some comments made to the media earlier in the week.
Dave: That's right, the coach of The Citadel has really put the foot in it this time, saying that we don't deserve our spot in 1-A ball and that our performance this year hasn't been up to that higher standard. I used to have a lot of respect for him, but not after this.
Barry: Agreed. Furman has performed as well as anyone could have asked for, especially considering our tough schedule and injury troubles. These young men have played hard every down of every game and have nothing to be ashamed of.
Dave: Speaking of injuries, the Paladins starting quarterback has returned for today's game.
Barry: I talked to him earlier and he is excited to be back. He said he's going to go all out and leave everything on the field in what will be the final two games of a fine college career.
Dave: The pass and option attacks should be back in a big way for Furman, but The Citadel likes to grind it out on the ground.
Barry: Today, it's all about stopping the run. The Bulldogs won't surprise us with their offense, but they will be tough.
Dave: Do you think this is a must win?
Barry: With a 1-9 record and their spot in 1-A football in the balance, Furman cannot afford to lose today. To lose at home to our rival would be devastating.
Dave: I think the Paladins are ready to have a huge day.
Barry: We'll find out soon enough, as the game is ready to start.
Game Summary
The Paladin offense struggled with their first possession, going three and out. The Bulldogs responded with a long drive using nothing but running plays that finally ended with a failed fourth down conversion of the Furman 38. Fired up by the stop the Paladin offense got it together and moved down the field for the first score and a 7-0 lead after one.
The second quarter featured more offense from Furman and enough defense to limit the Bulldogs to a single score. Furman led 21-7 with less than a minute to go, but the Bulldogs responded by breaking an 80 yard run to close within one score. With time running out in the half the home team completed a 50 yard pass only to have the receiver fumble the ball, ending any hope of taking a comfortable two score lead into the half.
The third quarter was the usual mess for the Paladins. The Citadel scored quickly on their first drive and an interception quickly led to a second Bulldog score, putting them ahead 28-21. At this point I took a break from the game to calm my nerves.
Losing to a 1-AA rival? At home? It can not stand.
Forgetting the pass entirely, Furman battled back on the ground. After a touchdown I decided to go for two to put some pressure on The Citadel and give my awful defense a second chance to keep the lead. The conversion is good (Fullback dive) and the home team leads 29-28. Finally the defense has a moment, using a stack set to stop the ground attack of the Bulldogs. After the three and out another score and another conversion puts Furman up 37-28. The Bulldogs respond by scoring AGAIN in rapid fashion, but my brilliant plan is working as they settle for an extra point. Furman leads 37-35 after three.
The fourth quarter is all Furman. The Paladin running game is unstoppable, and the defense manages to make two critical stops. Three Paladin touchdowns, including a late "piling on" score is simply too much for the Bulldogs to overcome, despite a late touchdown and conversion of their own. The Paladins win a wild one with a strong fourth quarter effort.
So this is winning...I could get used to it. [wow] :D

Barry: It seemed like the season just started yesterday, but it's almost over. Today Furman closes out their season at home against Navy.
Dave: The celebrations from last week's win over the Bulldogs have only just stopped, but today the Paladins have another good chance to pick up a win.
Barry: Navy should not be underestimated. On paper they are one of the weaker teams in college football, but these young men have shown great heart all season and come in with a surprising 5-4 record.
Dave: The ground game is what they're all about. Furman will have to control the clock and prevent big plays today.
Barry: How do you think last week's win factors into this game?
Dave: It will give this team some much needed confidence. They know they can get the job done, if everyone executes.
Barry: Well, there you go. Let's go to the field for the final Paladin game of 2005.
Game Summary
The Paladins came out strong on offense, effectively mixing the pass and the run. The result was an 80 yard touchdown drive. Furman's defense came together for a rare stop and another long drive looked to put the home team up by two scores. However, the drive fizzled at the Midshipman 32, where a failed fourth down conversion turned over the ball. Navy responded by marching the length of the field for a touchdown, but the Paladins had the answer, completing a 50 yard pass play that was followed by another score. The Paladins led 14-7 after one, and were looking as good as they ever have.
After the wild scoring in the first, the second quarter saw things settle down and the Furman offense struggled. Navy completed a rare long pass of their own to tie the game with a minute remaining. The Paladins again dropped the long bomb on the spotty Navy defense, but the receiver fumbled the ball.
That's two weeks in a row this has happened, in very similar situations. I'm appointing a blue ribbon fact finding committee to get the bottom of this "butter finger WR at the half" problem.
14-14 at the half.
The third has not been kind to the Paladins this year, but you'd never know it from today's performance. Two long drives on the ground helped get the game back under control, and even an 80 yard TD run by the Navy fullback (moving like Barry Sanders) was only enough to cut the lead to 28-21 after three.
Gut check time in the fourth. After another huge defense stop (Navy can't pass to save their lives) a long clock killing drive on the ground featuring Furman's star HB ended in a short field goal to make the lead 10 with two minutes remaining. Navy responded with one of the AI's patented "I'm going to score no matter what" 16 seconds TD drives. The onside kick goes out of bounds and Furman has a chance to put the game away with a first down.
3rd and 3.
The call: HB dive from the Ace formation.
He gets the handoff...hits a wall of blockers...spins off it...breaks into the open field! Into the secondary for a 12 yard gain! First down! First down!
Three "victory formations" later, and the Paladins honor their seniors with a huge win. Coach Lamb takes the Gatorade bath on the sidelines and the crowd of 4,500 goes wild. We're celebrating like we just won the national title. For this team, after all the disappointments this year, it's understandable.

Season Goals, Revisited
Beat The Citadel
It wasn't easy, but we beat our rival. Hopefully we'll blow them out next year.
Recruit for the Future
The Paladins signed two *** recruits during the regular season, but it's too early to celebrate. We need help at just about every position, so post-season recruiting needs to go really well.
Beat a Division 1-A team
I thought it would be Army or Navy, and it turned out to be Navy. We also played good first halfs against Army, Western Michigan and Maryland. The problem is you have to play the whole game.
Win 5 games
No.
Next up, all the off season goodness.

Off Season
Budget
Recruiting 40
Training 30
Discipline 30
I need those recruiting points but I'm too conservative to go more than 40%. I almost ran out of discipline points last year, so no point in taking any chances. As for training, it seems to be mostly a waste but I keep spending points on it anyways.
Players Leaving
21 seniors have graduated and most will not be missed. Key losses are:
QB #15 OVR 86
ROLB #41 OVR 65
FB #33 OVR 62
HB #31 OVR 62
CB #6 OVR 59
WR #36 OVR 59
And a whole lot of scrubs.
Transfers
WR 15 (JR) from Mississippi State joins the Paladins.
Recruiting
Overview: The goal was to sign as many players as possible, focusing on those that are already highly interested in pipeline states (SC, NC, GA, TN) only. I was a little disappointed to see so many interested HBs, considering that position is already well covered by our best player. I had to sift through the best of the rest.
Players committed, by week.
Week 1
Robert Morse ** QB
I knew I needed to fill the QB position with #15 leaving, so no expense was spared getting Morse. As it turned out, he wouldn't even be needed...
Week 2
Eric Beverely ** FS
My secondary is terrible, so I targeted Eric to hopefully help matters a bit.
Week 3
Andrew Johnson *** ATH
Tyrone Miller ** ATH
Both of these guys had high interest levels so they were targeted under our "sign anyone" policy. I had no idea where either one would play at this point.
Week 4
Shannon Moore ** WR
I don't pass as much as I run, but the WR position was very weak and needed help.
Week 5
Malcom Coleman *** HB
Andre Andrews ** DT
Clay Byrd (pigeon?) ** DE
Manny Lloyd ** ATH
Just a pot luck here. Coleman will insure a strong future at HB, although he won't start in 2006. The rest are...the rest.
Top Classes
Furman came in a dismal 103 with a class of 0/0/4/7/0
Top 5
Oklahoma 4/11/6/3/1
Texas A&M 2/13/9/0/1
Texas Tech 2/13/7/1/2
Arizona State 2/12/10/0/0
USC 0/15/8/1/1
Position Changes
We had 3 ATH players to assign. M. Lloyd will play CB (68), T. Miller WR (68) and A. Johnson will be our starting QB (OVR 76, THP 91, THA 84)
Training
The usual blah. K #29 was most improved (+4, 82 OVR). Most of the other +4/+3 players were 40s scrubs who will never see playing time in all likelihood. Star HB #22 improved by 2 to 82 OVR.
2006 Roster
Overall: D
Offense: D
Defense: D-
Believe it or not, that's a huge improvement.
QB
A. Johnson (FR) OVR 76
R. Morse (FR) OVR 62
C. Dean (FR/WO) OVR 59
Nothing but disorganized youth, here. Johnson can throw the rock, but he's also likely to get rattled easily. The QB position has a good future, but it's not quite here, yet.
HB
#22 (JR) OVR 82
M. Coleman (FR) OVR 76
#9 (SR) OVR 59
#22 is our star player and will be expected to carry the offense and take the heat off our freshmen QB. Coleman has the raw skills but needs some time to learn his craft. Hopefully we can get him playing time in 2006. I'm already having him return kicks and punts (SPD 91). #9 will be ready in case of emergency.
FB
D. Barr (FR/WO) OVR 62
#45 (JR) OVR 62
These two will split the carries in short yardage situations this year. Hopefully Barr's composure will hold in pressure running situations.
WR
S. Moore (FR) OVR 68
T. Miller (FR) OVR 68
#18 (JR) OVR 62
#7 (SR) OVR 59
B. Whitlock (FR/WO) OVR 56
#15 (JR/TR) OVR 72
Insert the usual "wish I could use him" cliche for #15. It's still a weak position, although better than last year. With a freshman QB and freshmen WRs the passing game could get pretty ugly when they get rattled.
TE
#93 (JR) OVR 65
#86 (SR) OVR 56
Both will probably see playing time, and neither is going to do much worth talking about.
Offensive Line
LT C. Hall (FR) OVR 70
C J. Hudson (FR/WO) OVR 59
LG C. White (FR/WO) OVR 56
RG #62 (JR) OVR 52
RT #77 (SR) OVR 52
When walk-ons are better than your upper classmen, what more can be said? Hall will have to step up and lead this rag-tag line.
Defensive Line
LE C. Byrd (FR) OVR 68
RE #56 (SR) OVR 70
DT T. Campbell (FR) OVR 70
DT A. Andrews (FR) OVR 68
We recruited heavily here and hopefully it will pay off. #56 will provide senior leadership for our young line.
Linebackers
ROLB #45 (JR) OVR 78
LOLB M. Lewis (JR/WO) OVR 52
MLB K. King (FR/WO) OVR 52
Ouch. It's these three and some stop-gap players who aren't worth listing. ROLB #45 leads the defense, but he shouldn't expect much help from his fellow linebackers.
CB
M. Lloyd (FR) OVR 68
C. Brown (SO/WO) OVR 52
Another position with no depth, cornerback is going to be extremely weak again this season. At least Lloyd has some speed.
FS
#25 (SR) OVR 62
E. Beverely (FR) OVR 62
Move along, nothing to see here.
SS
#20 (JR) OVR 65
#3 (SR) OVR 56
Good news: these are returning players. Bad news: these are returning players.
Kicker
#29 OVR 82
One of our best players is a kicker. Sigh.
Punter
K #29 OVR 65
Not a typo. With our Punter having an OVR of 40 he's going to sit while #20 does double duty. Honestly, why do we have a OVR 40 Punter? A converted linebacker could kick that well!
Summary: Freshmen everywhere! We're stronger overall than last year by a considerable amount, but the Paladins are also going to be full of rattled players making rookie mistakes. The future is looking up, at least. I expect our HB to carry the offense with about 30 carries a game. Anything the passing game can do to help is a plus, of course. The defense is improved but still terrible, so stops may be hard to come by.
2006 Schedule
The Citadel (Rivalry Game)
Rice
at UL-Lafayette
at Penn
at Notre Dame
Army
Wofford (Rivalry Game)
at Cincinnati
Indiana
Duke
at Navy
Appalachian State (Rivalry Game)
It's not a hard schedule this time (what was I thinking in 2005???) but we're still not that good. We play all three 1-A Independents, three 1-AA rivals and some filler.
We are ranked 108 by Athlon Sports and expected to finish second among 1-A Independents.
Season Goals
Win 6 games
I think 6 or 7 wins is very doable with the weak schedule and improved team, but only time will tell. We're still going to be underdogs against any 1-A opponenet, Athlon Sports opinion notwithstanding.
Win a Blow Out
Every single win was a narrow one last season. This time I'm hoping the Paladins can have a game in the bag by the third quarter, at least once. For the sake of my nerves, if nothing else.
Win all three rivalry games
Anything less is unacceptable.
The season opener is next with the new look young-n-dumb Paladins ready to have a big year.

Official Furman Pregame Show
Barry: We are coming to you live from Paladin Stadium in what promises to be an interesting first test for Furman.
Dave: Last year the battle for the Silver Shako was a wild one, but the Paladins come into today's game with a lot of young talent.
Barry: Young is right. The Paladins are starting twelve freshmen today, including the starting quarterback, Andrew Johnson.
Dave: This young man didn't even play football in high school. He comes from a baseball background and he's got a cannon for an arm.
Barry: There was some controversy in starting Johnson over Robert Morse, who was expected to be the starter when he was recruited.
Dave: I talked to Coach Lamb and he told that Morse just isn't ready. Johnson might lack experience, but he has all the natural ability. There's no quarterback controversy, Johnson is our starter.
Barry: It's our junior halfback who will carry the offensive, however.
Dave: No doubt. I'd expect him to get his number called a lot, especially if our young quarterback gets rattled by the pressure.
Barry: On defense, what can you say?
Dave: It's a better group than last year, but still weak. Our ROLB is going to have to carry this group. The only good news is more speed in the secondary.
Barry: It all seems to point to a high scoring game.
Dave: I agree, but the Bulldogs won't be able to keep up with the Paladin offense.
Barry: We'll know in a few moments. When we return, the opening kick off.
Game Summary
The Paladins brought their "A" game for this rivalry battle. The offense was unstoppable in the first, effortlessly driving for three scores. Meanwhile the defense was equally up to task, forcing three punts. Furman leads 21-0 after one.
The Citadel got it together somewhat in the second, matching Furman's two touchdown drives with quick scores of their own. The Paladin LBs and secondary are struggling somewhat, but the Bulldogs needs stops to catch up and they're not getting them. Furman leads 35-14 at the half.
The third was, surprisingly, a defensive battle. Neither team managed anything on their initial drives, with the Bulldogs punting and Andrew Johnson throwing an interception. Furman recovered from the turnover by grabbing a Bulldog fumble, which lead to the only score of the quarter. It's all Paladins, 42-14.
The second team is in for fourth quarter garbage time. After being on the wrong end of so many blow outs, you would not believe how good this feels. Lots of meaningless "stat time" play leads to two touchdown drives for both teams and the Paladins get the easy win. Our days of struggling to beat 1-AA teams appear to be over as Furman retains the Silver Shako in dominant fashion.

Barry: Welcome once again Furman fans! Today our undefeated Paladins take on the Rice Owls here in Greenville.
Dave: Undefeated...I like the sound of that. But today's game will be a much tougher test than last week's.
Barry: The Rice Owls come in as one of the weakest teams in Division 1-A football. Even so, they're here to play.
Dave: This team loves to run the ball, especially out of the option. The Furman defense needs to step up and stuff that run.
Barry: What about our freshmen quarterback?
Dave: Andrew Johnson had an impressive game against Citadel, but this Rice defense is much stronger. It should be a good measure of where this young man is and where he needs to be.
Barry: Do you think Furman is the favorite today?
Dave: I have to say no. Rice has more depth than the Paladins, even if we have superiority at certain positions. Don't be fooled, we need to bring a lunch for this game. With that said, I think Furman will win.
Barry: There you have it. Up next, Furman vs. Rice!
Game Summary
The Furman defense immediately set the tone by stopping the Owls on their opening drive. The offense then produced a well-balanced drive to score and take the lead. Rice responded, however, scoring quickly on a long running play. The Paladin offense stumbled, but benefited from a Rice fumble which turned into another score. Furman led 14-7 at the end of the first.
The second quarter featured long drives by both teams, but no points to show for it. The Paladins defense was doing a fine job of preventing big plays by the Owls, forcing them to move the ball slowly on the ground. The half ended with a quick Furman drive that featured a 51 yard field goal by our star kicker. 17-7 Furman at halftime.
The third probably put the fans to sleep. Defense began to control the game on both sides of the ball. The Furman offense struggled, especially the passing game which went from effective to non-existent. Andrew Johnson was clearly rattled, throwing rocket balls with alarming frequency. Neither team scored in the third.
Johnson's passing woes continued in the final quarter, as the shoe finally fell with an interception. Fired up by the needed break, the Owls drove for a touchdown to cut the lead to three with four minutes remaining. A quick three and out by Furman left the crowd in shocked silence as it appeared the Owls were about to complete their comeback.
Then the defense responded. That was not a typo.
A big tackle in the backfield by ROLB #45 on an option play led to Rice failing to convert the third down. The Owls punted. Furman controlled the ball, but needed to control the clock. At this point the struggling running game came back to life behind offensive mainstay HB #22. The decisive ball control drive ended with two victory formations at the Rice 20. The Paladins improve to 2-0!
Final Score
Furman 17
Rice 14
The good: The defense was surprisingly effective, although Rice isn't exactly an offensive powerhouse. The running game was good enough to win.
The bad: I wanted to impeach QB Andrew Johnson after this game (you had to know that joke was coming...). The passing game was pitiful. If we get rattled by the RICE FUDGING OWLS I can only imagine what the Notre Dame game will look like...good thing our schedule is as soft as it is.

Barry: Today we are coming to you live from Louisiana where our unbeaten Paladins will face their toughest test to date.
Dave: You said that right. No disrespect to The Citadel or Rice, but their programs are both far below the level of even an average 1-A team.
Barry: Even so, the Cajuns come in 0-1 after a tough loss to #8 LSU. They also feel slighted by the lack of respect they're getting.
Dave: This team is far tougher than I think anyone realizes. They can certainly get it done with the passing game. This could be a very high scoring game, especially against the weak Furman secondary.
Barry: What do the Paladins need to accomplish to win this afternoon?
Dave: They need to control the ball on offense and get at least one or two big plays on defense. UL-L will be looking to light us up, so we have to slow the pace down and play Furman-style football.
Barry: Never play the other guy's game. It seems obvious, but it's harder than it looks. Let's hit the field for some southern football!
Game Summary
The funny thing about a win streak is you forget what it's like to lose (and vice versa). After four straight wins I came into this game extremely confident, which caused immediate problems. Lafayette dominated the first quarter, exploiting our porous secondary for two scores. Meanwhile, our offense sputtered. Cajuns led 14-0 after one.
The Paladin offense finally found a bit of a rhythm in the second, driving 40 yards for a touchdown after a Cajun fumble. Mistakes like that are the only thing keeping the Paladins in the game, as our defense looks powerless to stop them otherwise. A late touchdown by the home team put them ahead 21-7 at the half.
The Paladins came out surprisingly composed in the third quarter as they drove the length of the field to pull within seven. Mistakes continued to hurt the UL-L offense as their two possessions in the third resulted in another fumble and an interception. The Paladins are winning the turnover battle for once, allowing us to claw back into it. 21-14 after three.
The Furman offense continued to click in the fourth, driving for another touchdown to tie the game at 21. The defense responded again, this time forcing a three an out. With the ball, the Furman running game methodically moved the ball, looking to run out the clock and take the lead. It looks like a truly electrifying comeback is in the mix.
Then, at the UL-L 20, we finally return the favor by fumbling.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Cajuns hit another long bomb for six immediately afterwards. Furman goes four and out on the next drive and the Cajuns take it to the house again to put the game out of reach and hand the Paladins our first loss of the season.
Most unfortunate.

Official Furman Pregame Show
Barry: We're in Pennsylvania for today's game against an Ivy League opponent.
Dave: Many people are saying this is nothing but a tune-up game for Furman, but someone who isn't is our special guest, Paladin coach Bobby Lamb.
Coach Lamb: Thanks for having me guys, it's good to be here with you.
Barry: What are your thoughts on today's game?
Coach Lamb: It's going to be tougher than anyone thinks. We're on the road, coming off a tough loss and facing a Quaker team that has to be thinking upset. We're not just going to walk in and get the win today.
Dave: You mentioned last week's game. What happened?
Coach Lamb: I think we played really well. That fourth quarter fumble destroyed our momentum and we collapsed. It could have ended very differently, but I can't live in the past. Right now all my thoughts are on Penn.
Barry: Are you concerned about their passing game?
Coach Lamb: Without a doubt. They've got the potential to put up big numbers through the air. Our defensive schemes will be focused on shutting that down. We played a lot of 4-3 sets in past weeks, but expect more nickel and dime packages today.
Dave: What about our own passing attack?
Coach Lamb: Andrew Johnson is a freshman and he'll make freshmen mistakes. It's my job to help him learn from these mistakes and improve week to week. I've got no patience for negative comments. We're building up our passing attack and the bottom line is it's going to take time.
Barry: The offense has been criticized as boring and one dimensional. How would you address those critics?
Coach Lamb: Winning is all that matters. I'd rather win with a ball control running game than pass for 500 yards and lose. As far as one dimensional goes, are these people even watching the games? I feel we've done a good job of mixing up our play calling and balancing the run and pass.
Dave: Any predictions for today's game?
Coach Lamb: I predict both teams will play hard and someone will come out ahead. That's all.
Barry: Thank you Coach Lamb for taking the time to appear on this show.
Coach Lamb: Always a pleasure.
Barry: We'll have the opening kick when we return.
Game Summary
Penn wasted little time in exposing Furman's weak coverage after the Paladin offense struggled on their first possession. Only a missed extra point (!) offered some consolation. The Paladins responded with a touchdown of their own, but the Quakers scored soon after, somehow missing another extra point. Furman answered to take a 14-12 lead into the second.
The Paladin defense finally began to pressure the Quaker QB, resulting in two defense stops. Meanwhile, Furman scored twice to pull ahead, only to have a late Penn touchdown (and extra point, finally) close the margin to 28-19 at the half.
The third was all Furman as they finally began to play up to their abilities against their persistent Ivy League enemy. A long touchdown drive and a M. Coleman TD punt return was combined with solid defensive play to put the Paladins up 42-19 after three.
The fourth finally saw the chance for garbage time play for Furman's second team. Coleman was especially impressive at HB, leading a lengthy ball control drive for a touchdown. Penn had no answer to Furman's strong second half, failing to accomplish anything of note with their passing attack. The Paladins pick up their third win, already matching the 2005 total.

Official Furman Pregame Show
Barry: Hello again Paladin fans! Today we are coming to you from South Bend where Furman will be taking on Notre Dame.
Dave: This is truly one of the Meccas of college football. I'm so excited to be here.
Barry: Today's game is being broadcast coast-to-coast, another Paladin first.
Dave: Well, you know what that means. Sunshine Scooter Lee Corso is here with us once again!
Corso: Hi guys, I didn't expect to see you two any time soon after the Paladins' 2005 season...but I'm only kidding.
Barry: What are your thoughts on Furman's season so far?
Corso: Well, this will be the first Furman game I'll be watching this year, but the word is this team is heading in the right direction. You can't really argue with a 3-1 start, even if those wins came against a weak schedule.
Dave: Does this mean you're picking Furman to win today?
Corse: In a word: no. The Irish are also 3-1 this season and fighting to regain respect after a poor showing last year. I expect this Notre Dame team to win big.
Barry: Thanks for stopping in, we now go to the field for the start of the game.
Game Summary
It took Notre Dame about ten seconds to get the first score of the game on a long running play that set the tone for the game. Furman had the answer with a long drive to tie the score, however. The Irish responded with a second long run by the HB, and the announcers were already talking about the possibility of an NCAA single game record, with two minutes left in the first. The home team had no answers on defense, however, as another long march by Furman tied the game at 14 after one.
The pace slowed down considerably in the second quarter as both defenses began to step up a bit. Using some 4-4 sets didn't stop Notre Dame from finding the end zone, but it did force them to do it ten yards at a time, at least. The Paladin running game was also in full force, evening the score at 21 after one half of play.
Then the scoring stopped entirely. Neither team could move the ball for a sustained drive, resulting in two goose eggs for the big board. The mood is getting tense for Notre Dame as the upstart Paladins are right there with them going into the final quarter.
Furman moved the ball on a long time consuming drive, only to fumble on the Irish ten yard line in what looked to be the decisive moment of the game. Against all expectations, the Paladin defense continued to amaze, stopping the Irish yet again. With time running out, Furman methodically ran the ball down the throat of their opponent, moving into position for a game winning field goal.
Time out.
Ball at the Notre Dame 13. 5 seconds to play. Field Goal team is in. The crowd is going absolutely nuts. The controller is shaking in my hands like a freshly landed fish. Sweat pours down my face as I position the red arrow. The kick meter is in motion...don't screw up...don't screw up...oh no, the accuracy part was stopped too early...
Kick is up...
Time stands still as my heart hammers in my chest...
The kick is good!!!!!!!!!! Holy Fudging Shoot Furman is about to beat Notre Dame in their own stadium!!!!!
Then the kickoff...two seconds remain...no miracles please...
Furman makes the final tackle on the kick returner to seal what has to be considered one of the biggest upsets in college football history. I collapse to the floor, completely drained, a smile cut deeply into my twitching features.

Official Furman Pregame Show
Barry: We're back in Greenville after three weeks on the road and the Paladins are coming back riding high after a huge win over Notre Dame.
Dave: Beating a top program on national television...I'd say this team has officially arrived. The only problem is there are a lot of games left to play and you don't want to peak too soon.
Barry: Today it's fellow independent Army. Last year the Black Knights held off an early Furman rush to win big. This year, a lot has changed.
Dave: The programs are going in opposite directions. Army lost their star running back to graduation, while Furman's running game has never been stronger. Here at home, it's time to make a statement.
Barry: Army comes in winless, while Furman is looking to improve to 5-1. With their running attack and some help from freshman quarterback Andrew Johnson I think they can do it.
Dave: I agree. As long as they avoid mistakes and play a solid game overall this should be another for the win column.
Barry: It's time to get the game underway, so let's head to the field.
Game Summary
The Paladins came out strong on their opening drive, quickly scoring to take the lead. Army's offense looked overwhelmed, failing to move the ball on their first two drives. Meanwhile, everything was clicking for the Paladins, who led 14-0 after the first quarter.
The Black Knights still could not solve the riddle of Furman's 4-4 and 4-3 sets in the second. They did manage one decent drive, but it ended with a missed field goal. I'd like to note at this point that Army has the saddest mascot in NCAA football. It just looks SORRY, like something from the island of misfit toy. Oh, Furman scored again. 21-0 at the half, and the game is pretty much in hand.
The third saw Army finally get to the end zone to pull within two scores, but the Paladins had the answer on their next drive, moving the ball at will and burning time off the clock. The third ends with our second team coming in to get some garbage time with a 28-7 lead.
Our back-ups actually out-perform Army's starters, demonstrating just how far this team has fallen in one year. Morse can't complete a pass to save his life, but Coleman continues to impress as our second HB. He also became an impact player while I wasn't looking, so the future at this position is now very secure. The Paladins complete the sweet, sweet revenge beat down with a 10-7 fourth.

Barry: Paladin Stadium is the site for today's rivalry game against the Wofford Terriers.
Dave: Furman is playing three of its former SOCON rivals this year. They've already defeated The Citadel and I'd be surprised if this one ended any differently.
Barry: On paper Furman is going to win this one big, but games aren't played on paper.
Dave: Very true. This team did get a scare against Penn this season, but Coach Lamb told me he's really impressed with how this team is growing and coming together.
Barry: I don't think they'll underestimate Wofford, especially with the rivalry that has existed.
Dave: I expect Furman to play one their best games of the season today. They come in with all the momentum in the world and as you know nothing succeeds like success.
Barry: I have to agree. We're ready to kick it off.
Game Summary
I must have been in a bad mood or something when I played this game, because it was nothing but a merciless hammering of a hopelessly outmatched opponent. Normally I do a quarter-by-quarter recap in this section, but I won't for this game because it was just a series of easy scores and defensive stops all the way through and I'd get sick of writing that over and over. Instead here are some highlights.
M. Coleman continues to impress as the future HB starter. He had his first 100 yard rushing game and also returned another punt for a TD.
Furman's defense was simply awesome. 10 sacks, 3 interceptions, and a safety (the first one I've ever had in any NCAA game!). It was a long day for the Wofford QB.
Passing is improving, but all those freshmen are still a major weakness that will probably haunt Furman against more credible opposition.
Overall, it was a total rub-out.

Barry: We are coming to you live from Cincinnati Ohio where the Paladins will be playing the Bearcats.
Dave: Cincinnati has been struggling this year, coming into today's game with a 2-4 record and very little national respect. On the other hand Furman is starting to get some serious attention for the season they are having.
Barry: The Paladins are 6-1 and they looked pretty much unstoppable last week against Wofford. Of course, today's opponent has a little more firepower than the Terriers.
Dave: Yup, this Bearcat team should not be taken lightly. They've got the home field advantage and a well balanced offensive attack.
Barry: Speaking of balance, do you think the Paladins are going to favor the run again today or attempt to get the passing game going?
Dave: Coach Lamb told me he wants to establish the passing threat early. I'd expect Furman to test the weak Cincinnati secondary.
Barry: It's still all about the run, though.
Dave: True, true. HB #22 is looking to set some records if he stays on his current pace. I expect to see some big highlights from him, as well as freshman superstar Malcom Coleman.
Barry: It should be fun, today's game is up next.
Game Summary
After going crazy against Wofford the Furman offense came out looking lethargic, failing to accomplish anything of note in their first two possessions. Luckily, the 4-3 blitzing defense was ready to play, shutting down the Bearcats early. No score after one.
Things began to click for the Paladins in the second, as a mixture of passing and rushing overpowered the weak Cincinnati defense to the tune of two touchdowns. The Bearcats were still unable to solve the Furman defense, but did manage to return a punt all the way to keep it close. 14-7 at the half.
The offensive woes continued for the home team in the third as they put up another goose egg. Meanwhile, the Paladins drove the length of the field for the only score of the third. We're only up by 14, but the dominance is so total I'm not worried at all. Furman leads 21-7.
An early score in the fourth puts the game in the bag, allowing Furman to play some bench players, including our "speed" quarterback (SPD 80) C. Dean for the first time. Used to the pocket passing of Johnson Cincinnati makes our option attack look like a million dollars, resulting in another score. A cosmetic touchdown by the home team in the final minute closes things out as the Paladins make a statement on the road.

Barry: We're coming to you from a sold out Paladin stadium, where interest in this surprising Furman team has reached new heights.
Dave: It's been a wild few days. Today's game is going to be a regional broadcast and it's all because of the success of this Paladin team. After last week's win they narrowly missed a spot in the Top 25.
Barry: A few more votes would have been enough. As it stands, the nation is really taking notice of this young team and today could really be a coming out party for them.
Dave: Indiana comes in 2-5 and struggling in Big Ten competition. However, they have a quarterback who can make big plays happen.
Barry: This will be the first big test of a suspect Furman secondary against a very pass heavy offense. What do the Paladins need to do?
Dave: They need to contain the big plays and make their own big plays on defense. We need to put on the pressure.
Barry: I talked to Lee Corso earlier and he said he's picking Furman.
Dave: I have to agree with him, for once. Indiana can't stop our running game and I think the Paladin defense will continue to play above expectations.
Barry: All eyes are on Paladin Stadium for this game. We'll see how Furman handles the pressure of success in a few short minutes.
Game Summary
Both offenses came in ready to play and the first quarter was a shoot out with no defense to speak of. It was all about the big passing play for both teams, although Furman also had success on the ground. After a wild first quarter it was tied at 14.
Disaster struck in the second as QB Andrew Johnson sustained an injury, sending my heart leaping into my throat with memories of last year's disaster. Luckily, it was only a two quarter long injury. Unluckily, Robert Morse quickly proved ineffective as a replacement, throwing up two interceptions. The only good news was that the Paladins held the Hoosiers to field goals on those two turnovers, before trading touchdowns to end the half. Indiana leads 27-21.
The offense continued to stall like a '72 Cadillac in the third. Putting in C. Dean did little to reverse the momentum, especially when I made the mistake of letting the running QB throw it. The interception led to another Indiana touchdown, giving the visitors a 34-21 lead after three.
Johnson returned early in the fourth, and the offense immediately sprung back to life. Unfortunately the defense had no answers for Indiana's deep passing game. The result was a lot of scoring but Furman could not close the gap, falling short. The winning streak ends at home in disappointing fashion.

Barry: Hello again Paladin fans! We're coming to you from Paladin Stadium for today's game against the Duke Blue Devils.
Dave: Duke is of course known more for their basketball program and it's easy to see why. This Blue Devil team comes in close to the bottom of Division 1 with a record of 2-7.
Barry: Furman can't be too confident, though, after last week's disappointing loss to Indiana.
Dave: Coach Lamb has really been working this team hard this week to get back to where they need to be. He told me that Furman can't afford to look past any opponents, no matter who it is.
Barry: This Duke team has struggled on both sides of the ball. Meanwhile, Furman has had success mainly with the running game, but also with a surprising defense.
Dave: It's really amazing how well this defense has played this season. Of course they didn't resemble that remark last week, but I think this is the perfect team to bounce back against.
Barry: It's Furman vs. Duke when we return.
Game Summary
The Paladins came out fired up on offense and eager to get back in the win column. A punishing drive put Furman up by a touchdown. Duke responded with what would prove their only sustained drive of the game, moving down to the Furman 10 before an interception in the end zone turned the tables. Furman led 7-0 after the first.
The second quarter was all Furman, as the offense scored another touchdown and a late field goal. The Blue Devils are completely stalled on offense and fail to make it past midfield on their possessions. At the half Furman leads 17-0.
The third quarter featured Furman slowly the pace of the game down with a long touchdown drive. Duke's defense is powerless to stop the explosive Paladin running game and the occasional big pass play is keeping them honest. Defensively Furman can do no wrong. 24-0 after three.
The second team is in for the fourth, including running QB C. Dean. The dominance continues as Dean has an impressive quarter, both running the ball and throwing for a touchdown. Coleman also gets some good playing time, running for a touchdown of his own. Duke has pretty much given up and accomplishes very little on offense, resulting in a shut out for the Paladin defense.

Barry: We're in Annapolis for today's game between Navy and Furman. Last year Furman upset Navy in Greenville. For this year's rematch the Paladins are on the road.
Dave: Home field might not be enough for the Midshipmen. This team is much weaker than the one Furman defeated last season, while the Paladins are much stronger.
Barry: This Navy team has struggled to move the ball, coming in with a 2-7 record.
Dave: The Midshipmen rely on a power running attack, but the loss of talent in their backfield has really taken a lot of the effectiveness out of their offense. If Furman can contain the run, they will win today.
Barry: I think the improved defense line of the Paladins will be a huge advantage.
Dave: I agree, our front four is going to have a chance for a huge game. I also expect some big plays out of our linebackers.
Barry: What does Furman need to do offensively?
Dave: Just play Paladin football. Run the ball, wear 'em down and then hit the big pass play when they creep up. Keep it simple, keep the ball moving.
Barry: The kickoff and the rematch when we return.
