Coach Jack Shappa could only look at the ground and shake his head as his QB threw his 5th pick of the ballgame. Just last week things were different. His BYU squad showed poise and determination in their first conference game against a tough TCU team and pulled off the improbable win. But today... well, today was different. On the road for the first time this year his Cougar squad had fallen apart to the tune of 7 turnovers, and 44 points given up.
This was just his fourth game as a college coach. And now his second defeat. He knew the Utah media was going to dissect him and his game plan like a frog in a high school science class. He could only hope to redeem himself next week...
And so next week arrived... And another road game. This one against the highest ranked conference opponent yet for the Cougars, and the team favored to win the Mountain West conference... The New Mexico Lobos...
As young Coach Shappa's boys entered that stadium, the roar of the crowd was deafening... And they all wanted one thing... Victory for their Lobos. Coach Shappa wiped a bead of sweat from his furled brow, and stepped out onto the field, determined not to let that happen...
The New Mexico game is now playing on the web site... And the post-game breakdown of the San Diego State debacle is also posted, along with the other slew of usual dynasty web site updates...

Wow! I must say that I am very impressed. That website is awesome. I didn't take the time to watch all of the New Mexico game (only up until Moore scored the 70-yard touchdown run), but I am interested to see how others call games, seeing as how I haven't played a game of NCAA against a human since 2003. I highly commend your efforts, and by the small sampling you've provided, it appears that you have the potential for some entertaining writing as well. I'll be paying attention.

Coach Shappa took one last look up at the scoreboard and pumped his fist. Not a big "in your face" pump, but just his own private one close to his chest. His BYU Cougars had just pulled off an unlikely win on the road against heavily favored New Mexico, 31-21. The wolves at the door would be kept at bay for at least another week...
Only two weeks ago the media was singing his praises after his win over TCU. But that was followed up by a 7-turnover disaster in San Diego. Then people began questioning the importance of the TCU win. TCU had dropped to 1-4 and suddenly that win didn't seem so impressive. BYU would really be exposed by New Mexico, they said...
And so early on it seemd to be true. BYU gave up two long touchdowns, while the offense fumbled on their first possesion. New Mexico 14, BYU 0. But then a subtle change occured. BYU began to slowly but steadily dominate at the line of scrimmage. What started out as a laugher became a 21-21 half-time tie. In the second half BYU would stop New Mexico's offense completely, while adding 10 points of their own. surging ahead for good, and making believers out of many critics...
Next up was a return home to face Colorado State. The Cougars would come in as the favorite, and rightfully so. An opportunity to sieze momentum, or to fall back to .500 and repeat the pattern of underachieving started 3 years ago...
The BYU vs Colorado State game is now playing on the web site...

NOTE : Before this game I made some tweaks to the A.I. I turned my run blocking down from 35 to 30, and turned the CPU awareness and break block both up from 70 to 75. Things have been challenging but I felt my run game needed to be reeled in a tad (especially considering my team is only going to get better over time).

It was as if the entire stadium let out one collective sigh of relief. The final moments ran off the clock and the Cougars had won a hard fought battle against a pesky Colorado State team, 34-24. They remained above .500, and in contention for the conference title...
Jack Shappa led his troops off the field victorious, and quickly went to work preparing for Notre Dame. It would be a road game that had become known as "The Holy War", and one BYU had won 3 of 5 times. Notre Dame was struggling this year at 2-4, but a win on the road against them would be huge for the program, and for new coach Shappa's job security...

"I hate these games..."
The Coaching Career of Jack Shappa. Season 1, Week 10...
The dissapointment of the Notre Dame loss was beginning to sting less, but now Coach Shappa faced a new problem. It seems his guys were looking forward to the UNLV game. Everyone on the local talk radio programs were talking about it. Two teams battling for the conference title. Problem was the next game was Air Force, not UNLV. Coach Shappa was at wits end. What did he have to do to get through to these guys? Air Force came into the game in last place in the Mountain West, ranked as one of the worst teams in division 1a, with a 1-7 record, but the coach knew all too well they would put out 100% effort wether they were 1-7 or 7-1. His guys either couldn't, or wouldn't grasp this simple concept, and he feared they'd come out flat for the game...
Turns out his fears were justified...

"...Paper Cougars..."
BYU had escaped. Plain and simple. Destroying Air Force on their home turf would be a mere formality on their way to a huge Mountain West conference showdown with UNLV the following week. But as coach Shappa had feared, his team came out flat against the underdog Falcons, and found themselves down 28-7 late in the first half. The season looked to be slipping away before their eyes. The fans had seen this for three seasons before Coach Shappa arrived. The Cougars blowing opportunities and imploding when it mattered most.
The Cougars finally woke up and managed to claw their way back into it though, tying the game up at 28 in the third quarter, but fleet-footed Falcons Quarterback Shaun Carney was still proving troublesome. When Carney went down with an elbow injury late in the third quarter, on the same play in which he scored to put Air Force up 35-28, the Falcons were done for the day. A huge 4th quarter delighted the fans and sealed the 52-35 victory for the Cougars, but talk radio was abuzz over what they were calling, the "Paper Cougars..."
Bill Riley (Radio Host) : "...Let's talk a little Cougar football... This week's game against UNLV is huge. Both teams come in with identical four and one conference records, tied with Utah and San Diego State for the top spot. BYU had that monster come-back against Air force last week. How do you guys think they'll handle UNLV? We go to Tyler from Bounitful... Tyler, you're on hot ticket 700..."
Tyler (Caller) : "Hey Riles... I like your show... As for the Cougars, I'm really worried about them going down to UNLV this weekend..."
Bill Riley (Radio Host) : "How so?"
Tyler (Caller) : "Well they have identical records, but if you look at how they got there, it's worrisome. The Cougars haven't even beaten one team with a winning record. They got killed by San Diego State, and we struggled against Air Force and Colorado State, both at home. UNLV beat Utah, they played San Diego State down to the wire. I think this could be a disaster for us down there. I mean I like what Coach Shappa is doing, but our winning record was built with smoke and mirrors... I think this last part of our schedule we're playing some pretty good teams and I think we could lose them all..."
Bill Riley (Radio Host) : "I think a lot of fans feel as you do, Tyler. But you know, we did beat New Mexico on the road, and we beat TCU. Granted those teams are struggling a bit this year but they are quality programs. You're right though, we've got UNLV on the road, then Wyoming on the road, then we finish at home against Utah. We're really going to see what kind of team BYU has this year over these next three weeks... Thanks for the call..."

The Coaching Career of Jack Shappa : Season 1, Week 12
"...Air it out, son... Air it out..."
With those words from his coach, BYU quarterback Jason Beck knew he had carte blanche to let it fly. And why not? In a crucial conference game his team found themselves down 44-14 in the second half. One half of football later he'd brought them to within 13, and his favorite wide receiver Todd Watkins had set the BYU school record for reception yards in a game...
Still, a loss was a loss... 51-38 UNLV... The next day the Utah media tore into Coach Shappa for his lackluster defensive playcalling, and an offense that didn't get going until too late. And once they did, it became a one-dimensional show of Beck to Watkins. There was discontent in Provo...
Now he had to find a way to motivate his troops for their final road game of the year. This one against struggling Wyoming. Wyoming had a terrible run defense, and BYU found themselves among college football's elite running programs, so the pundits were picking BYU to bounce back. But his team had entered a funk. If the huge blown opportunity against UNLV could not be purged from their minds in time, BYU would find itself a .500 team.
* BYU 5-4 (4-2) @ Wyoming 3-6 (3-3) *

NOTES : Defensive aggressiveness for all teams has been reset back to default levels (previously it was max conservative). This returns more individual "flavor" to different schools' defenses, and makes things a tad more difficult. Human run blocking raised from 25 to 30.

Heh, spoken like a true Ute fan! I'm in Ogden, so the last couple years I used Weber state (imported into the Sun Belt one year, then the WAC the next).
This year I wanted to use a "real" 1a Utah team. I ruled out Utah only because I wanted a challenge, and they were too good. So Utah State would have been a good choice, but I didn't want to play in the WAC this time (just did that with Weber in last year's game). So that left BYU.
And you're right, they stink, which makes it that much more interesting :)
Wait till you see the BYU/Utah finally to the season. "Holy" crap, it was a war to the last possession.

The Coaching Career of Jack Shappa : Season 1, Week 13
"...It All Comes Down To This..."
It looked like it was all over for the Cougars. 2 weeks ago they were manhandled by Mountain West conference co-leader UNLV, leaving them a full game behind three other teams with only two weeks of conference play left. Last week they found themselves down on the road to conference foe Wyoming 21-7 at halftime. Then fate smiled on Coach Shappa and his team...
BYU pulled themselves up by the bootstraps in the second half and won a gutsy 35-28 decision over the Cowboys. This kept them within a game of the conference leaders, and secured their first winning season in 4 years, also making them bowl eligible.
Then the improbable. All three teams ahead of them in the conference race lost. San Diego State and UNLV would finish conference play with 6-2 records, while Utah dropped to 5-2. BYU, with their 5-2 conference record and Utah the last game on the schedule, had the opportunity they were looking for...
And so the stage is set. BYU takes on Utah. What is already an intense rivalry just got even bigger. The winner wins a share of the Mountain West conference title, and will be going to a bowl game. The loser will drop all the way to 4th in the conference and may or may not see post-season action...
* BYU 6-4 (5-2) vs Utah 7-3 (5-2) *

The Coaching Career of Jack Shappa : Season 1, Week 13 Part II
"... The Drop ..."
The stadium fell silent... Just a few moments before, Lavell Edwards stadium was deafening as BYU's football fans tried to will their team to victory. But now, it was over. And they knew it.
Hollywood couldn't have written a better script up to this point. The Cougars, having achieved their first winning season in 4 years, and under a new young coach, were taking on their hated rivals, the Utah Utes. As fate had it, the winner would win a share of the conference title. The loser would finish 4th. BYU, battling their heavily favored foes back and forth all game long, found themselves trailing by 4, with just 4:30 to play. The crowd was going absolutely ballistic. Time for one, last, heroic drive to victory...
And for three minutes it looked like that would be the case. But then, with 1:30 to play, facing 4th and 8 at the Utah 32, the time for a hero to step up had arrived. Todd Watson, the spectacular receiver who set the single game and single season records for receiving at BYU, was open, slanting across the middle. Under heavy pressure, QB Jason Beck threw him a perfect strike. Right into his hands... and... dropped...
Not the ending Hollywood would have written. And not the legacy Todd Watson wanted for himself. Despite being considered one of the finest receivers to attend the school, and despite the afformentioned records, Todd would now be remembered as the guy who dropped the pass. The pass that cost BYU the conference title, and, as fate would have it, also cost BYU a bowl bid.
What a way to end an outstanding college career. The final play of his college career. And unfortunately the one he'll replay in his mind for the rest of his life...

The Coaching Career of Jack Shappa : Season 1, Off-Season Part 1
Web Page Updates/Upgrades for 10/22/05
It's been over a week since my last dynasty update. I used my first season experience to upgrade/tweak many areas of the web site to make improvements. There is a bunch of off-season content too...
*** Complete Post Season 1 Breakdown ***
http://www.rangersguild.com/ncaa2006
The post season breakdown includes a list of accomplishments and problem areas, team stats, key player stats, conference final results, complete bowl results, the top 25, and all the award winners.
The week-by-week game information has been changed to incorporate pre-game screen shots which include more data than before. Now you can see not just the team ratings and record, but their key players, injuries, and the team statistical rankings before the game.
The preseason analysis now includes my team's complete roster, not just the key players. This should make it more fun to see exactly how the team improves and should make it evident why my cornerbacks are picking their noses while the opposing wide receiver is dancing in the end zone. These web site changes are retro-active so the info is there for the first season.
I've broken out off-season recruiting into its own full-fledged section, rather than just a list of recruits. You can follow the recruiting week-by-week and see exactly how it went, who had the top class, etc. The framework is up but the actual data is being input right now.
One thing I worked on was making sure the site looked right for Firefox users. I had only concentrated on IE before, but 16% of those following the dynasty use Firefox and so I made a few fixes. If you can't see the videos with Firefox consult the FAQ on my site and you should be reasdy to go.
Thanks for everyone who has contributed to and/or followed the dynasty through the first season. There are hundreds of unique visitors watching the games. The biggest single day was October 10th when 112 people watched the Utah game come down to the last minute for the conference title... And of course watched my star WR drop the pass... Whoops.

The Coaching Career of Jack Shappa : Season 1, Offseason, Part 2...
"... So Long, Kid..."
Coach Shappa leaned back in his chair and looked up at the same damn water stain in the ceiling he'd stared at a thousand times before. He was nervously devouring his pencil when the door to his office cracked open... It was his offensive coordinator.
OC : "Uh, coach? You got a minute?"
Coach Shappa : "This better be good news..."
The OC looked at the ground sheepishly as he came through the door. Coach Shappa knew what that meant.
Coach Shappa : "He's going pro, isn't he?"
OC : "Yeah coach... Yeah he is... You know, I thought..."
Coach Shappa : "I know what you thought. Same thing everybody thought. Just say the word and this kid will stay. But I wasn't going to go that route. How could I ask this kid to throw away a once in a lifetime chance? I laid it out for him best I could, but I let him know I'd support any decision he made. If the boosters want to fire me for that, then let 'em."
Still, there were even more pressing concerns than the loss of BYU's top offensive lineman to the pro draft. Despite a massive effort at both in-season and off-season recruiting, not a single halfback was coming to BYU. That left last year's 4th - 6th stringers...
In what the Utah media would call "a collosal blunder", Coach Shappa has neglected to redshirt his second string halfback, and he ended up only carrying the ball a couple of times in one game. Now he was gone, and no replacement was recruited.
Coach Shappa : "Where's Meikle?"
OC : "Where he always is, the weightroom"
Coach Shappa : "I gotta hand it to that kid, he's busted his ass these last few months. He's earned a shot at this. No point in beating around the bush any longer. He's our guy, for better or for worse, he's the starter."
OC : "You want me to go tell him?"
Coach Shappa : "No, no. Let me. I need to deliver some good news for a change..."

The Coaching Career of Jack Shappa, Season 2 : Preseason
"... Let's see what these kids can do ..."
Full preseason data is up at the web site for BYU's 2006 season. I've moved the "off-season" section so it's the first thing in the menu for the current year, instead of the last thing on the previous year's menu. Seems to make more sense that way, considering the off-season moves have the most effect on the current season...
Complete pre-season info includes (besides recruiting), the team/conference analysis, complete 2006 roster, in-season recruiting targets, the pre-season top 25, and BYU's key players.
Also the schedule area is finished so you can see the complete 2006 schedule with opponent ratings, and a pre-game analysis of BYU's first opponent, Wake Forest. The game has been played and the video is being processed with the full game to be up and streaming on the web site shortly.
One kinda cool thing added are navigation arrows next to the year in the data area, allowing you to quickly move between the years of a current data type. In other words you can quickly compare last year's roster to this years, or last year's stats to this year's etc etc by putting the data screen on the area you want to compare and clicking the year navigation arrows. It will be more useful as more seasons are compiled obviously...
A few misc. fixes here and there for aesthetic/functionality purposes as well...

Coach Shappa : "I know, I know... It's just not easy to tell a kid that the starting job he's been looking forward to for 3 years isn't his... He's worked hard, been patient..."
OC : "But Kemp is the future of this team. The kid was recruited all over the place and chose to come here... Damn it, coach, we need all the weapons we can get on offense! I'm down to last year's 4th string halfback, wide receivers who are slower than I am, and now you're gonna tell me I've got an Elite 11 quarterback on our team but you're not gonna let me use him!? Christ coach you want to win this game or not?"
Coach Shappa looked up from his desk. His initial reaction was to yell back, but he knew his offensive coordinator was right. He didn't like throwing a true freshman immedietly into action, but he had no choice...

The Coaching Career of Jack Shappa
Season 2 (2006), Week 4, Game 2
"... 2006 Mountain West Conference Opener ..."
It's not easy erasing a 55-10 drubbing from the minds of your young impressionable players. An extra week off certainly helps, though. After last year's opening day blowout loss, there was a little therapy game the following week against division 1aa Eastern Illinois. No such luck this time. After the bye week, a conference road game against undefeated TCU is next.
Coach Shappa remained confident in his choice for starting quarterback. Chris Kemp will again get the nod, with John Beck as backup. Local Utah state recruit Anthony Mason, considered an insurance policy and "project", is redshirting. Those are the only 3 QBs on the squad.
QBs are not the only position thin depth-wise. BYU's 2006 team has 51 players on the roster, 3 of which are redshirting, leaving only 48 active players. No doubt this year's team has some real talent, but it lacks depth. Injuries could turn the year into a complete disaster...

The Coaching Career of Jack Shappa
Season 2 (2006), Week 5, Game 3
". . . Meet the O.C. : Mr. Eldiess Church . . ."
When the head coaching job at BYU opened up last year, offensive coordinator Eldiess Church was considered a front-runner for the job. California junior college coach Jack Shappa was of course given the job, and so you'd think things would have been rough from the start, especially considering the new coach was not a member of the church of Jesus Christ & Latter Day Saints.
O.C. Church : "Actually I half-expected to be out of a job. Jack was the new "hotshot" and I didn't think he'd want anything to do with an old coot like me, a relic from the Lavell days... But he really surprised me..."
Coach Shappa : "It's important to recognize talent where you can. Eldiess was a great offensive coordinator, his playbook brought BYU into national prominence for many years. I think we just needed to make some adjustments for today's changing style of play, but no need to throw the baby out with the bath water."
O.C. Church : "I was excited. It was like a new lease on life after these last few years. Jack and I have become good friends..."
Coach Shappa : "Eldiess could be an outstanding head coach anywhere. I felt lucky to have him. I kept his playbook intact, but decided to move the emphasis from pass first, to run first. That meant a lot of running out of the shotgun like you see nowadays, like over at Utah under coach Meyer last year. I just needed to start recruiting some different kinds of personnel than they're used to bringing in. And we have..."
